GSM-Modul eating battery - Nokia Lumia 920

My lumia 920 worked for about 48 hours dropping battery to 70% then i went to work where the signal for my provider is very weak and it dropped the hole 70% to Zero in about hours. has anyone experienced that or just better has anyone a solution for this?

Have you checked what apps are running in the background? It's likely not the radio causing your drain.

for me it seems to be the radio what's eating the battery
I nearly uninstalled everything and put the phone to batterysavingmode. So it was unplugged from power Saturday in the morning and till monday noon it used nothin more than 26% of battery while listening to music surfing, checking mails and making some calls. Then i went to work and i did nearly nothing with it. at 9 o'clock the battery was dead.
No whatsapp or anything else on the phone

Also I encountered this problem with my NL920 but it's not all the time encounterwed; very strange...

Yeah, definite link between poor reception and poor battery life on my device, too. Hopefully we'll see a fix in the meantime, use WiFi where you can though, it helps me a lot.

This is normal. Every phone is like this. When the signal is poor, the phone must consume more electricity in order to maintain the connection. I think Nokia designs their phones to stay connected at all cost though because they're famous for having good reception haha

Great battery life until yesterday

I've been very happy with my 3vo battery getting all day usage with no problems up to 15 hours.
Then yesterday left the house with a full charge and a couple of hours later noticed my phone was warm but I was in and out of a friends house, very hot outside so didn't think anything about it. 5 hours later noticed my battery was very low and got the low battery warning at 6 hours.
I'm thinking something got stuck running, guess I'll find out today

There have been numerous reports of this. I did not take the OTA, for the record. What resolved this was a reboot but I can confirm that my phone wasn't sleeping yesterday until I rebooted it.
I had the same problem (i.e. it getting warmer than usual and then crappy battery life) I also noticed it dropped from full signal at my house to half. One hard reset later and it seems to be working like the awesome candy bar sized technical technical soul bot that it is (translation its great).
This could all be due to having a bad signal in the location you were. My battery life is great at home where I have 3-4 bars of service. When I go to work where Im lucky if I have 1 bar, my battery drains much quicker.

That would cause battery drain, but wouldn't explain the phone staying awake. The sleeping issue happened to me in the exact same location.
Take the OTA, it completely fixes the awake issue.
HTC sync gets "stuck" on and kills yoUr battery.

Yeah this has happened to me twice so far. I don't think its low signal as much as a app doing it. I basically work faraday cage and it never gets hot.

[Q] Horrible Battery Life

I've read and read, searched and searched this forum and have not come across my exact problem yet...
I know there have been overheating issues, and I know there have been boot looping problems... all causing terrible battery life, mine has neither. Let me rephrase, my overheating issue is not due to me actually using the phone... On idle (with the screen off), my Rezound only lasts about 2 hours on a full battery. Granted, I live in an area where there isn't full service, but there is some service. I can watch as data is being exchanged with no apps running. What the hell is using data? I have a feeling this is what is killing my battery, the phone is not at all sleeping. I have deselected "always on data" and I turned off fast boot and auto sync.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, my phone is a bone stock refurb.
Try a factory reset maybe?
I can do that, but it doesn't really solve the problem. It just started doing this yesterday. I've had it over 2 months and haven't downloaded anything different. I would really rather just figure out what is causing it, so I don't have to do a factory reset every time something like this happens. You know? Thanks for your suggestion, I'm afraid that is going to be my last resort right before exchanging it...
Try exchanging the battery first. Start small. Work your way up to the big stuff(exchanging the phone). Why give up the customizations you've done if you just have a bad battery?
I was thinking it may be a bad battery, but it concerns me that I can watch the data stay running even though I'm not using anything that requires it. My brother has a Rezound and I placed mine next to his and literally watched the battery life deplete 10% in 5 minutes while his lost no percentage at all, both were idle with the same screen settings. Is it common for a battery to fail that drastically out of nowhere?

If data is constantly being used, something HAS to be using your data. I'd get an app like better battery stats and CPU spy. CPU will show you if your phone is going into sleep mode at all and better battery stats can show you which apps may be causing it.
Do you have the 4G antenna on?
I have betterbatterystats, it shows android system at the top of processes. That program is a little difficult to understand since everything is abbreviated.
I appreciate all of your responses. I just got off the phone with Verizon, they're sending me another phone AND battery for good measure. During lunch today I watched the percentage of my battery deplete while it was plugged into the wall and not being used, used a different charger, nothing. It wasn't even hot. I turned the phone off to try to get it to charge. when I turned it back on, it got to the lockscreen and then restarted itself. Boot looping now. I'm not going to fool with it anymore. Maybe the third Rezound will be better.

I haven't changed anything from out of the box other than visual properties. I'm assuming the network has a little to do with it, but it started failing way too fast to be a radio problem IMO.
I received my 2nd Rezound last week. First one had the hiss/feedback/interference issue through the headphone jack that escalated to a level of to not being able to use the headphones at all without being painful. Anyway, the new one is running very hot (battery) and is draining the battery almost as fast as you're describing yours to do. I've used both the standard battery and extended. This morning while using it at home on wifi with most of my syncs either disabled or set at a min of 2 hrs it drained my extended battery by 20% in 20 mins. I wasn't even using the internet or streaming any music or video. I was working on setting up calender and task list widgets. Phone is stock, not rooted. I will be calling Verizon tonight to see about getting a 3rd one. Sucks as I really like this phone when it's working properly. If the 3rd one has issues to and HTC isn't rolling out any fixes for them I might have to look at something else. But I don't want to!
I feel like if I can get the hardware to cooperate with me, I can get the software to. I was planning on rooting after the ICS push, but the phone obviously had different plans.
Set your phone to CDMA only, especially if you don't live in an area with LTE coverage. You will see significant battery advantages from that alone.

I should have mentioned that I'd already done that (only 3G here anyway). I've done all the battery management tricks I've read about but this phone has an issue. I'm not even getting half the battery life out of it that I was on the 1st one. And the battery gets significantly hotter then the other phone.
tried wiping battery stats after 100% and drained/recharged a few times?

[Q] Need help figuring out battery drain

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to using android devices, i've played with some of the devices my friends own as well as a tablet my brother owns but this is my first personal device.
Anyways, I've had the phone for around 3 days now? It's going great but I feel like the battery is draining a bit fast and I'm not sure if I'm "normal" by standards or if my phone is slightly problematic.
I've attached the two screen shots below
Man things I do on my phone are Gmail, Push email for work, browsing, WhatsApp, Gchat and occasionally music and maybe 20-30 minutes of video.
As you can see from the graph there were two very short moments where I was charging the battery as well due to transferring some files. Finally, I've had a chance to completely drain the battery once but haven't had a chance to do one of those long charges people talk about but have through multiple charging occasions gotten it to 100, although right when I unplug it it goes to 99%.
Thanks!
EDIT: My phone wakes up quite a lot I think because I quite a few work emails a day, around 80-100 in addition to another 20 or so gmail emails a day. Thanks.
I have my own problems about the battery life too. Specially on standby mode all turned off (wifi, sync, gps, data, etc) 93% when I sleep then when I woke up battery goes down to 80%
are you too experiencing this as well?
haven't tried that yet, I attributed my battery drain to email, could be another problem then.
Start with Better Battery Stats from the market and look for wakelocks .

There are a few posts on battery issues.
I too had battery issues and in my case it was a couple of things.
I put the screen onto auto brightness and put wifi onto off when phone asleep.
These 2 things fixed my totally. I know lots of other people are having issues and its neither of these things but these are what helped me.
I also got an app to stop apps starting up. There are a suprising amount of apps that start when your phone starts up that you dont need to be running.
I think having wifi on constantly and getting 19 hours out of a charge is darn good for android.

I have experienced this after about a week of use. I left the phone when it was 95% and after an hour in stand by, it drops to the 80 something mark, b/w 84-86% any more people who experienced this?

Yup, I had WiFi on pretty much on at home and at work and it certain does chew through your battery! Started at 7am at 100%, back home by 8.30pm and at 20-30%. By 10-11pm, it's on charge again.
Usage is fairly average, x2 30 mins of music to and from work, emails on push, send and receive texts, a couple of calls here and there.
I didn't save snapshots of some tests I carried out, but I'll try to recreate the situations again and upload them.
It seems if you have your WiFi settings, Keep on during sleep to Always, it's constantly draining your battery, even if your handset is on standby. I've left mine to Never, but have found only a small improvement to battery life.
Attached is my current usage WITHOUT WiFi as much as possible, there are a few power spikes where I've had to use WiFi and to connect to PC to transfer some documents, download some Apps. Also I'm NOT at work for the last two days, so usage has drastically dropped. Loooking good at 2D 1H 50M, battery at 45%
You can see for most of the first day where I haven't used WiFi there is a slow, but steady drop, the first major drop was when I was playing a game on the way home, then it's steady again. The biggest drop was when I used WiFi to download the odd app or two, then I turned it off again.
Hope this helps the OP in answering some questions about finding out what is draining the battery.

[Q] Battery Life?

So how about the battery in the Lumia 920.
After the Lumia 800 failed in this area it would be great to know if the 2000mA battery is big enough for this whole Thing

I've been using it for half a week now and battery is phenomenal even in LTE all the time. Will last you a full day off not a day and a half with moderate use. Full day heavy use probably.
You have nothing to worry about this time. Nokia got it right.
More details here: http://forums.wpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=200158
Mine sucks right now. I'm just using it for normal email updates and a few downloads from the app store and it'll be on 40% by 4-5pm. I've turned off a lot of the background updates on the live tiles too, but it's not making a difference.
Screen on time is disappointing.
Mine has excellent battery life. 2 days on a row on my last charge.
Ppl with battery life problems, I would suggest to visit the Nokia support forum.
Important
If you disable NFC (tap+send in settings) you have a HUGE improvement in battery life.
As mentioned above, disabling NFC and background apps will greatly improve battery life. I am more than satisfied.
I leave my data connection on 2G most of the day and it seems make the phone last all day, with heavy use. If I really need the faster connection I switch it to 3G. This seems to work for me
Full day, 3G use (using on a 3G only carrier, no LTE unfortunately). Moderate-to-heavy usage, not a problem getting back home, chilling on the sofa, doing what not, and having enough battery to last until bed time. FYI my day starts around 8-9 and I head to bed around 11ish+.
I hear battery life isn't as good when NFC is on. Don't know though, I never have NFC on anyways (really don't see how useful it is atm).
Battery saving Tips
This battery saving tip has been overlooked since WP7 first generation devices. The reason why some ppl will be having huge battery drain is due to apps running in the background. So, you need to think about the apps that you actually need to run in the background. Make sure all your email accounts are on the highest interval time to be checked and/or "as the item arrives". When you select as the item arrives I believe true push is being used which if you don't receive tons of emails will save battery in the end. The other apps settings are located here start screen>settings>swipe over to applications>background tasks>and block all apps that you can that don't need to be running background tasks. I for instance only have accuWeather app running background tasks. Another thing is you need to be aware of apps power usage...i noticed that accuWeather is far better at using less power consumption than the Weather channel app. Other tips are common knowledge. Disable NFC, use WIFI when available, turn off high sensitivity if you're not needing it, use low time-out for shutting off display and use low brightness. Be efficient!!
Good
Lasts me about 1hr for each 10% increment. About the same i was getting with the S3. While playing music its battery life seems to last longer than leaving it on standby :S Find standby kills battery some reason, just recently turned of nokia drive background app, hopefully that makes it last longer
Battery life has been excellent for me. Mine was fully charged on Wednesday morning @ 8 AM and was at 48% when I put it on the charger Thursday @ 2 PM with moderate uses. Unexpectedly, the battery life is much better while on the LTE network than when I'm using my SIM card not registered for LTE usage. Standby drain is very very good.

That's because WiFi stays connected when you're streaming music, whereas WiFi disconnects when on standby. Known windows issue that should be addressed by ms soon.

How do you switch the 920 to 2g mode? I only have 3g and 4g in the options on max speed? my old lg wp let me set either 2g or 3g, huge difference in battery life on that devic.
to be honest tho so far i'm impressed easily outlasts my old phone, just tried turning off the high sensitivity on the touch to see if it makes a difference.
also run down the phone till it turned itself off last night, tried turning it on got the warning icon of low battery, did it again then it started, data connectino wouldn't work battery said 0% remaining and it lasted just under half hour with me playing mirrors edge, makes me wonder how accurate the battery % is
Battery capacity seems to have been cut in half!
When I first got the 920, at 100% the estimated battery life would say 1 day and X hours. Now (2 weeks later) when my battery is at 100%, it now says 13-14 hours of estimated life. My battery also drains much faster now than it did in the first week of owning the 920. My use of the phone has not changed over the last two weeks. I'm always in an LTE area, WiFi on and I use bluetooth from time to time. Is this an issue that other people are experiencing?
I'm trying to figure out if I need to exchange my 920. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks!
i found it was using 2% battery every hour whilst connected to a data connection - but not syncing anything, all backround tasks turned off. This seems a bit mental.
So it seems that battery isn't so good :/ Too bad because i was wondering to buy this phone.

After deep cycling the battery, I am back to the correct reading. I am now losing a little less than 1% of battery life per hour on standby!

Not just another "battery issues" thread

I have been meaning to post in here about how great my battery life has been, especially after seeing all of the threads complaining about it. I have been going home after a 9 hour day with 70-80% and even with extreme use, I have had no issues.
That being said, today my battery drained inexplicably fast for no reason. I checked my background apps and closed a few, but the battery drain persisted, so I rebooted.
Anyone else having this issue or know what causes it? This is the first incident I have had in almost a week. The last app I launched before this happened was Inrix traffic. Battery life has been beautiful, otherwise.

That's the fix I use. I now call my 920's battery life non-deterministic. It's great, except when it's not. When it's not, even if it looks like it should be because nothing is running, a reboot fixes it. Until the next time.
I would be shocked if there weren't an OS update to fix whatever process is going rouge and running away with the battery. Because it's something in the OS. Or at least its something the user cannot remedy, short of taking off and nuking the site from space.
I've noticed this a lot too. I killed a whole load of background apps and the battery life got a lot better. Then it got much worse again.
I believe my main problem is that I live in a low signal area. So I drain the whole thing in about 10-11 hours, even when out working the majority of the day.
One thing I have found is that the radios in the handset are very badly shielded compared to my previous handsets. This does mean that I can hear when the phone is sending out signals/utilising the radios. It does this a lot, even when it does have signal. It must consume a massive amount of power.
I get roughly 5-6 hours or so. Charger I bought on Amazon no longer does the trick (it's one that plugs into the cigerette lighter in your car and two USB outs). I have to bring with me the power cord and an inverter to keep it charged up so it makes it through the day.
I've got NFC and Bluetooth turned off, Wi-Fi on and the phone set to 3G mode. I get pretty solid battery life out of it.
When I feel the back of the phone getting warm, I reboot and it's good for awhile. I too would be surprised if there isn't an OS update to fix this issue.

I am heaving same issue with battery. Phone worked fine first 10 days and it started to be warm on the top back. Life of the battery can not last a day and i am a heavy user.
As somebody mentioned in comment to turn off this and that- i don't think so. I did not buy phone to keep everything off on it.

Excellent. I'll just keep my phone in Airplane mode all the time! What was I thinking, leaving the cell radio on?
I've just had 2 great days life out of mine. Off charge at 6am and currently sat at 58% at 4pm. I've been streaming a podcast from the internet via bluetooth for 90 minutes and I've been tethering too, as well as all the usual stuff, so it's not like it's been sat idle all day. I've even been using Nokia Drive to get to work this morning (I teach at many different schools) whilst streaming media off the web and bluetoothing it to the stereo and it's not hit it bad. Seems very power conservative where internet streaming and GPS is concerned.
I have battery level for WP8 installed and it has a graph so you can see when the battery level is dropping off. I've noticed solid battery drain from running the Audible app which continues after the app is closed. Rebooting solves this. I have been working in an area with excellent signal recently though, that may have made a big difference. I get 9-10mbps on HSPA at the moment. I do, of course, have NFC turned off.
Hopefully Portico will be here soon and solve some of these power problems.
