Hope this is a good forum for this as I'm looking for Android advice, not really tied to any one phone. I'm looking for advice on AK Notepad and Catch Notes. I am brand new to Android (Nexus 4), coming from Windows Phone. I went to Windows Mobile/Phone years ago. At the time I was looking, simply to combine a PDA with a cell phone, so I would only have to carry one item instead of two. I liked/needed the Outlook - phone sync so that all my Outlook contacts, calendar, notes and to-do fully sync'd with my phone. Now, I've gone Android (although its only been a few days).
I originally was looking for something like what I had with Windows Phone, full sync'g with Outlook. But, I've read in post after post to embrace the Google philosophy and use Google Contacts and Calendar. I've done that and appreciate the ability to work from both the phone and any computer I want. This way I'm not actually tied to one computer. I stumbled upon GTD hooking up with Toodledo as a great way to handle tasks/to-do's. And, it's working well.
For notes, I started using Note Everything. It imports great from Outlook Notes. (After cleaning them up, I'm down to a little over 200 notes in about 15 categories. Hey, over 15 years of notes here.) I like the interface and the operation on the phone. But, backup is a little bit of problem. Especially with the N4, which does not have a SD card. And, while the source notes are in various forms on my computer, I'm not terribly worried if the phone crashes. I could always recreate where I'm at.
Only, I wish I could find a "simple" notes app which had cloud access. I could enter/edit from a full keyboard, and everything would be both stored on the cloud and easier to backup. Springpad might work; but it looks like you need IE9, and at work we're tied to IE8. Springpad appears to be out of the question. AK Notepad and/or Catch Notes looks like it might work. I am having trouble importing my notes into Catch, but I hope to work this out.
Any thoughts on these two? Pluses, minuses? I think, if I can do this, I'd start with AK because I only need text notes. If I get to where voice/photo notes might be needed, I think I can migrate to Catch Notes and my Catch cloud items move to Catch Notes. Is my thinking correct? If so, and assuming I can actually get my Outlook Notes into Catch, this might be a really good approach. (I do wish Catch's online documentation was a little more detailed. Right now,it looks like you have to read a boatload of FAQ's, one by one, to get an idea of how the system works; spaces instead of categories/folders, hashtags/labels as sort items, etc. And, Catch's email response seems weaker than other developers who view every user as a potential advocate for their software.)

Does anyone else encounter similar problems with Quick Office's new update which allow us to type documents?
After the update, I have been using the word document function to a good extent but the app seems to be really buggy! The application will crash out of nowhere quite frequently and sometimes when I try to save my file, it'll say that it is saving and hangs there, and it didn't save.
As much as this is a highly anticipated update, its ridiculously halfbaked and just plain annoying to use. Would like to know if I'm just an isolated case or is this a common problem,

I've found it to be buggy as well, and I've only written one document with it. When I saved it it removed all the formatting including line breaks. All of a sudden my nicely laid out page with headings turned into one oversized paragraph in plain text
Fortunately I had copied the whole thing to the clipboard because I wanted to test something. So I deleted all the text, pasted, hit save and it crashed.
I then closed that document and opened a new one. Pasted the text, hit save, and it removed all the formatting again!
I tried a few more times, but every time it either crashed or removed the formatting *sigh*
I uninstalled and reinstalled Quick Office after that, but haven't tested it again. If it glitches again I'm just going to consider it useless.
Hows the ubuntu word processor? Is it any better? Have anyone tried it? Think i'm going to run Chroot ubuntu just to try it out..
I've been looking for the best app to take notes during class. It feels crazy that there's no Auto-Save in quick office.
One bug I've found to make it crash, when using the HP Bluetooth slim keyboard (if relevant) is, if I highlight a word, and type over it, it crashes. I lost like half my notes doing this. Now I just hit save every minute or two... and wish there was a keyboard (control s?) shortcut to do that.
I've also been trying Typewriter Beta... I really just want a Notepad esque text editor.. don't care about formatting really.
Fwiw, tapnote is the current winner. Least buggy of the ones I've tried.

I found it to be generally useless as well. I just decided to use google docs (through the browser) for all of my notes. May try the office 2010 web suite as well.
Edit: Gdocs is working fantastically BTW, the only reason that I am considering using office is curiosity. Additionally, I have an app on my phone called camscanner so that if there are any handwritten notes, I can scan them with my phone (works surprisingly well), and share to Gdocs, and tie them to the typed notes I have taken.
I had the same issue. I tried to use it last week to take notes at a conference and it would lock up quite frequently saving to local storage. It happened often enough that I switched over to the built-in notepad app. I think I'm going to stick with that or perhaps even the email client for now with the hope/anticipation that when Android is on this puppy, I'll have significantly more options.

My main interest in this tablet was to see if finally I can retire my paper notebook. There have been lots of good discussions about which handwriting/stylus app is best for various purposes, but (AFAIK) nothing about a secure note organization system. I want to have control over the repository/backup of my notes.
I use GDocs and Evernote all the time; most of my notes are ideally available everywhere, but there are some things I don't want synced to GDocs, Evernote, etc.
What I want is a way to easily organize handwritten notes that has this feature set:
1. Solid handwriting experience, mostly English words, an occasional graph or figure.
2. Text recognition system so I can search for keywords either from the tablet or from my computer.
3. Back-up system so that I don't loose everything if I loose my tablet, it breaks, etc.
4. Back-up system must be under my direct control. I am happy to store my notes on my personal computer(s), but don't want them out on the cloud.
5. USB sync to my computer is fine. Also syncing over the Internet is OK as long as it is SSL or comparable. I just don't want my notes easily exposed on a publicly available server which could be recovered with a cracked password.
Several years ago, when I was looking for something like this (not with a tablet, everything was PC), and I ended up using MS Onenote for my confidential notes, and Evernote for everything else. I have heard that Onenote is now out for Android, but it gets pretty poor reviews. That said, I haven't given it a fair try, so that is on my list.

So catch is being discontinued.. I need a legit solid comparable application, keep sometimes doesn't save photos.
Any personal experiences with evernote or spring pad?
I mainly use it to save photos I find on fb or Internet.

I am in a similar dilemma.
I don't like evernote, mainly because they are way too expensive (about 5$ a month is unreasonable in my opinion).
Evernote does not have a true offline option in the free version!
Here are the features that a good note app/service should have (catch notes had all these options):
Web interface and backup/synch (dropbox and web storage services do not count)
Offline editing and full access
Search everything (preferably as you type)
Categories/tags
Password options (preferred)
Reasonable export options is a must so you are not locked in to the app.
No monthly fees for above service (onetime fee only, or atleast a more reasonable month fee than 5$/month)
I looked briefly at the following apps/services and those are the issues I found which do not match my needs:
ColorNote: no web interface
MobisleNotes: web interface without search, no import/export option
Inkpad/notepad: no import/export option on web interface
Note Everything: no sync or export function
I figured I use catch regardless, and just use it for its internal storage options just sucks there aren't any real comparable services.

i have 3000+ notes and im looking at simplenote as a host, syncing with NValt on desktop, and there are a few android clients.
evernote is very reliable but too heavy. also i dont like that everything must have a title, and i you have to pay to store everything local. most of my notes are short and plaintext anyway.
however im having a lot of trouble importing them to simplenote. they have a tool but its super finicky and inconsistent. i think it will be easier to hack the notes into a client db, and then sync them up to simplenote. however this too is proving difficult because i want to keep the create and modify dates intact as well as the tags.
please let me know if anyone finds a soln.
in the meantime, id like to find the datafile on my phone. at the directory above i have hidden files turned on, but still see only media in ./media and one zero byte file in ./cache. where is the text data?

I can't see my notes in Global Search on Android

We have made a decision to not allow for a Global Search based on security reasons. With the option to set a passcode on your notes, we feel that Global Search would navigate around this and violate the notes security.
For example: If you have a passcode set on your notes, yet we allowed for Global Search, any term you search for may return a result, thereby indicating that the searched for text is part of a note's content.

Im currently looking for a way around this as im trying to use dropbox (storage) and dropsync (to sync particular folders)
If this fails it appears ill have to learn how to create apps and create my own with the Catch API
Failing that decompiling and rebuilding it to my specs is prob the final method
lets hope it doesent come to that
As you can see I haven't been converted to the dark side of other apps yet

Did anyone actually get an email regarding this shutdown? I had a bunch of notes stored in AK notepad which are basically lost forever, and I don't have any emails from catch.com notifying me of the termination - I'm just finding out today.
Maybe they ended up in my spam :/
Does anyone know of a good flash cards app? I used to use Flashcards++ on my iPod/iPad when I had them, and I was wondering what flash card apps you all were using/preferred?
I've tried a couple of them on my phone, but I didn't really care for them. What I liked about Flashcards++, was that I could import my flash cards via an Excel spreadsheet, which could be hosted on my Dropbox. Also, it permitted the use of photos.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Have you tried Anki? It has web sync and photos. You can even draw on a whiteboard to answer questions.

I'm a huge fan on Anki. I like how I can not only keep the same decks across all of my devices, but my PROGRESS in the stacks across all of them as well! I usually set everything up in the desktop program and just sync it from there.

Sorry to bog you with questions, but it seems like you've used this app quite a bit. Anyway, is there a way to randomize or shuffle the deck when you study the cards? I looked on Anki's webpage, and it looks like you can randomize the order when you import it, but it doesn't seem like it randomizes it anymore than that. (i.e., like the 'randomized' order will remain consistent through out the entire deck)
Also, is there a way to create decks (or sections) within decks? This would be especially handy because typically I make a 'mega deck' for my midterms, which can be broken down into individual topics. Or, do I just have to create a deck for each topic? (Either way, its not a big deal, but the app would be 'cleaner' if you could have decks within decks.)
Lastly, how do you sync between devices? It would be awesome to have it automatically sync between my Note 10.1 and Note 2.

In order:
In the settings you can choose to ensure that cards are not in-order when reviewed. Granted, this is a bit more relevant to things that actually HAVE an order (such as my primary purpose, language learning involving alphabets), but it seems to randomize. Maybe not the MOST random, but random.
I'm not sure about creating, but when you are importing, you can "nest" a deck inside of another. As I stated, I use Anki for language learning, and the source I use utilized Anki decks. When imported, they SHOULD import directly into the larger deck, but it does not for me. By dragging it into the larger deck, it will nest into it so you can review ALL of it, or just the smaller one. This is the mobile app, mind. It does sync that way on the desktop, too. Playing with it on here, you can also drag and drop on the desktop app as well.
You simply create an AnkiWeb account. You get the option when you install. By signing in, you can set the interval or triggers for syncing. I have mine set to sync when I close the app. On all of my machines. You can even set it to download the multimedia portions of the cards, or not. I know it works because all of the decks I sync use audio files with the cards.
You can even review online using Ankiweb (but you can't work with multimedia, just text cards), if you don't have access to any of your devices using Anki.
Hi all,
So I've had this tablet for a bit of time now and I've had trouble setting it up for productivity.
I'm a high school student and this tablet is my main productivity device (the HP desktop I use has the computational power of a lemon).
So I want opinions on apps and setups that will help a high-school student like me get some serious work done over the course of this year.
Currently I use:
Google Drive, because cloud syncing documents and work is glorious and has saved my life on multiple occasions
Timetable - cause I'm still settling in to my new routine
Stock calendar/S-Planner - this syncs events with my S3
A Bluetooth keyboard that gets the job done. (seperate from the case)
USB OTG adaptors for USBs and SD cards, and a 16GB USB.
Google Drive, while allowing cloud syncing, is lacking in quite a few basic features which would actually be really helpful to me, eg. Calibri font, picture inserting/editing etc, and my exams that need written material usually have to be handed in via Word document.
Polaris office and some other suits I've tried also seem to have trouble with word formatting (on a computer, words at the end of a line are chopped off and put on the next line).
A few other things I want to add:
I do a lot of my schoolwork at home using the tablet, especially for written assignments. (not sure how this would help in any way but just in case)
I would use LectureNotes, but with a finger it is REALLY inefficient. The crappy stylus I have doesn't help either.
Some of the subjects I have chosen for this year require a LOT of writing, so apps that can handle that well are preferable as well.
I don't print too much, and when I do I use the school music department (cause its free for me ahaha)
Something that syncs with Drive would be preferable as well, as I often access files from the S3 on the go.
I want to stay on stock for the most part - however if there's a really good app that needs 4.1+ for example I can consider it...
If anyone has any ideas on how I could set my productivity suite up, please let me know of apps that could help or any links thanks!
