replace tablet - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I was thinking about getting this, but not ready for an upgrade and its pricey to buy even a used one. I was thinking though of replacing my phone and tablet with it as its kinda an in between. Anyone done this or would recommend or not recommend?

Ymmv but I sold my galaxy nexus and nexus 7 and bought the note 2. I like it much better. No data to sync between the 2. I get nearly as much battery as the tablet and it fits in my pocket. My nexus 7 was wifi only so now I have data all the time as well.
I decided to keep the nexus 7 for a few days after to make sure bud I sold it like 3 days after I got my phone.
Its all personal preference though

If I flew a lot I'd rather have a Nexus 7 on hand, but otherwise I like having the Note 2 in my pocket wherever I go. This is something where you'll have to figure out how often you use it and how annoying you think it is to carry it around etc.

Yeah, same here. Exchanged the DNA, and gave my Nexus 7 to my son soon after buying the Note 2. I still have it available, but haven't picked it up for any other reason except to charge it.

and what about the phone portion? I mean all the reviews say its weird and awkward but do you feel like a wackjob using it as a phone?

I guess it depends on what size tablet your thinking of eliminating.
I love my note 2 but it is definitely not going to replace my 10" tablet anytime soon.

The people who say it looks funny holding it are jealous I havent even touched my Asus tf300 since I got this phone. It is my sons now.

This.
I came from a One X and find my self reaching for my Note 10.1 less but the extra screen real estate between 5" and 10" makes a huge difference for consumption and creation. But I also feel a 7" tablet's too small so it's all a YMMV.

Ya im coming from a xperia tablet

I admit it looks a bit silly holding it to your head to talk (at least now. in a few years phones around this size will probably be common). I don't care at all, but it might bother some. In this case, get a cheap bluetooth headset. I had something like this a while back and it's light, comfortable, and when you get calls, you flip it open and it automatically answers them for you to start talking.

Yup, mine was one of the originals of this design too. Paid $100 for it, within a week when I took my keys out of my pocket, it fell out without me noticing and I ran over it with my car. Good times.

This phone is definitely big, but not suitable to replace a tablet. I much prefer my Tab 2 10.1 as touchwiz on a tablet is more friendly. But maybe its the s pen integration on this phone that complecates things.

I have a galaxy tab 7.7.... When I got my verizon note I was able to get the wall street journal app (for tablets) running on and I pulled the sdcard from the galaxy 7.7 and I forgot to plug it into the wall while I played with my note and the battery died The irony is when I went to check my tablet to turn it off is was already off, opps. I plugged the tablet back into the wall but I have yet to turn it back on. I've only had the phone for 4 days and I'm trying to figure out to keep or let go of my tablet.. Everything I did with my tablet videos/books the note handles with ease. It depends on the user really and what you use the tablet for. In retrospect, the galaxy 7.7 only has a 5100mah battery. When mugen announced the 6400mah extended battery and I was sold.

will I ever get used to the size?

I came over from a galaxy s3 which I actually thought was about the perfect size for a phone. I thought I would try the note 2 out just to see if you know I would be able to use some of the extra features such as the pan and maybe some other things. I'm having trouble with the size. I'm not sure I am going to be able to work with this. The Galaxy s3 I could work 1 handed but I am struggling using the note 2 1 handed.
I am just curious if it is just that I am NOT used to the phone, and I will eventually figure out how to use it 1 handed. Thanks in advance for your kind response is.
Unless your name is Shaq I doubt you will ever be able to one hand this phone.
But even without being able to do full one hand operation, I am betting you will get used to the size. All things take time. Hell there was a time when I was so used to texting on my old Samsung flip phone back in 2005, that the thought of getting a touch screen keyboard based phone was just blasphemy. And of course when I did get my device, a Droid X, I was really turned off from the keyboard. I hated texting on it and it drove me nuts.
Now today, I can't imagine having a flip phone with those ugly T9 keys, or even a slider phone that has so much wasted thickness for a redundant keyboard.
You'll get used to it, sooner or later. But it grows on you.
You have to hold it differently. If your fingers are long enough, their tips can still wrap around the phone while it mostly resting on them, not your palm. This gives your thumb much more mobility. It feels weird at first but isn't uncomfortable. I cannot reach both the status bar and buttons without shifting my grip awkwardly, but I still can do that one handed.
It's been three days and I've already gotten used to it, I can't believe how small my former Razr MAXX feels in comparison. I'm 6'2 and have pretty big hands and I am able to 1 hand it in most cases, but it's more comfortable with 2.
Unless you have really small hands. you will definitely get used to it.
Im going to give it a week....right now I'm missing my sg3
I could drive the crap out of that phone.

That clip thing is called a fly grip I believe. Qbking77 has a YouTube video reviewing it and I think it looks pretty handy. I'm a 6 foot tall man with big hands and I'm afraid I'm going to drop the phone reaching for the notification bar while the phone is sliding in my hand. I've had a lot of different phones and this one is hands down my favorite but I do have the fear of it sliding out of my hand reaching for the notification bar to the home button (try doing that one handed... you'll see what I mean).

The moment I pulled the note 2 out of the box and put it into my hand for the first time the GS3 was dead to me. I doubt I will ever be able to use a smaller phone without a stylus. I use the stylus nonstop for work and find that I am typically using one hand to hold the phone and the other I have the stylus.
But, I am also 6' 5" and don't really have much issue holding it in one hand and using my thumb to operate it. I usually don't even have issue moving the phone slightly to be able to reach all 4 corners.
Personally when I use my wife's S3 or my old GN after having this phone they seem tiny and I can't even stand using them. People can say what they want but for me a guy with avg size hands I think this phone is perfect. The only Issue I do have is when using my left hand it is a PITA to hit the back button. Samsung should have had the whole area to the right of the home button as a contact area, so that isn't so much a size issue for me but a design issue. Either way I could never go back to a smaller phone now.
The only thing you'll have trouble getting used to are the stares. At the mall.....restaurants especially. I haven't had a quiet meal in the last week. Waitresses and patrons just walk up and say, "That is the biggest phone I have ever seen! What is it? Do you like it.....isn't it TOO big?"
I just tell them the micro radiation is off the charts....so stand back.

I'm in the process of switching carriers from Sprint to Verizon, and was worried about the size of the Note 2. I was glad to read all of your comments about getting used to it. Thanks! It has helped solidify my decision.

Just bought one and already had to exchange

Today I went to best buy to buy this because they price matched letstalk to 199$. The woman I delt with sighed and ughed the whole time. Really rude. I ended up adding a line. Burning a sim. And moving the phone to my main line to get the upgrade.
Now I noticed this when I got home but im disappointed in build quality. I dont know if it was me snapping the back cover back on. But the top of my screen was loose. And the bottom leaked light from the leds because well..the glue holding the screen clearly was not that good. I immediately called back and was upset and went to exchange and now im all fine.
But now im paranoid about snapping back in my back cover. How cheaply made is this thing? Anyone run into hardware issues yet? Best buy has a 30 day exchange policy. Thank god.

Sounds like a bad device. I haven't had any problems and since there aren't many threads about it, I'd say that other users aren't having problems either.

i just hope this isnt a common issue, i don't want it to happen to this one as well.
They wouldn't give me a price match to letstalk
I can assure you that this is NOT a normal issue with this phone... But, if you don't think something is right about it then you have every right to exchange! It's YOUR money and if your not happy then exchange away...
Only reason I got is because they price matched. I told them I know its not on your list. But other best buys have done.

Samsung's thin battery covers are reasonably robust regarding battery removal and handling. Even improperly installed, the plastic has given and snapped into place. I owned a Charge and Galaxy Nexus with similar battery covers and I have never broken a tab.
I have (3) batteries for my Note 2 and swap every other day without worry of breaking anything. Samsung knows removable covers...

Anyone want to take bets on what it looks like? No case no screen cover.
I did go through the bs of changing all my passwords last night as i have no lock on it also. That was annoying but probably was time to do that anyways.
While i had everything backed up one scary thought was if someone logged in they could have deleted my backups :/

Yeah me too. It will be nice when phones use built-in biometric security, and no more PINs or patterns. I check my phone no less than 50 times a day, and doing a PIN/pattern each time gets tedious.

Even since I got my phone stolen and people started posting some really nasty stuff all over Facebook and twitter i now use a lock screen. It might be tedious but it's worth it for a little bit of protection to ward off most people. In the end if someone wants to get in your phone they are going to but having a slight deterrent is nice.
I agree, pictures anyway!!

Yea this phone is pretty tough. I left mine in the lightbar of my patrol car and drove off the other day. Realized a half mile down the road and was like oh ****. Made the block and couldn't find it. Searched for like 30 minutes and chalked it up to a loss. Next day I drove the block three time at 5mph and found the phone up against the curb. UAG case was off, battery cover off, battery out and screen down. Was like Yes! But I bet the screen is busted (mainly just wanted pics off it) turned it over and not a scratch on the screen. Looked like it had tire print on it though. 2 minor dings along the side bezel was all the damage the phone took. Case had big black tire marks and was scratched to hell though.
Pen popped out and never did find it was the only bad thing.
It's a tough phone for sure.
I would call that some serious luck bro... as my Luck Stands.. I had to get my vision checked and I went to Target.. I set my previous phone (Thunderbolt) on the table and forgot I had done so and went in and had my vision looked at.. came out and it was gone.. :-\ good thing it was only a TBolt and not my Note or I would have raged on that store. LOL

It's so Big...

Never used any of the Note devices before and only glanced at them in the store. I just knew it had the features I wanted in a phone, so I pre-ordered. Yet when it arrived yesterday I don't think my mind was prepared for just how big of a device this is. I came from a Gnex so it's quite the change. The speed on this device is incredible though, love that. Don't love that it looks like I'm holding a brick to my face when talking.
I find I'm having trouble finding places to keep on my person without it looking too obtrusive in pockets. Any thoughts fellow Note users? I'm seriously considering returning it for a smaller device, like a LG G2...
P.S. Hell no to a holster / belt clip

I went from Gnex to Note II to the 3. I know what you're feeling. Honestly give it a day or two. You'll be used to the size before you even realize it. You'll pick up your Gnex and wonder how you ever used a phone so small.
As nice as the G2 is, this her Note 3 is one beast of a phone. Give it some time. I swore I'd never get rid of my Note 2, and only did so to get the 3. This is honestly the best phone I've ever used and could never see myself using anything but the Note line.

Trust me just give it time and it will seem normal size to you. I went from a note 2 to an HTC one and although the phone was nice I hated how small it was. At least in my opinion everything else is too small after having the note. I usually keep it in my back pocket.

I am coming from S3 and the Note is much larger, it will be a more of a challenge to keep it in a pants pocket but hopefully it won't be too much of an adjustment, and I plan to get a very thin case to go with it. But the positives of having the larger screen far outweigh this minor inconvenience.
Coming from an S3 I have to say the size doesn't bother me at all. I don't have big hands, but it just seems to feel right.

Yeah, I got a spigen Neo-Hybrid case but it feels too slim and doesn't make me feel like the device will be safe if I drop it from ANY height.
As for the pros of a larger screen, I have a Nexus 7 (which now feels pointless). So that serves to feed my need for a large screen. I just can't help but feel for my go - to service, it should be more...compact.

My Some-what Funny S 4 Story

Well, this is general, why not tell the story of how I acquired the Galaxy S 4 (more or less my android story in general).
I don't have the best of luck with phones. That's for sure. Back in the summer of 2012 when my two year contract with the LG Envy Touch was just about over I broke it. Somehow along the lines of dropping it, leaving it in the rain once, etc... let's say I take much better care now. So, I went out on the hunt for a new phone. At the Verizon store I was debating between the Droid Maxx and the iPhone 4S, when one of the workers came up to me (thank goodness he did, I'm glad I'm not stuck with the iPhone). He asked what kind of phone I was interested in an I told him what I was looking at. Immediately he took me over to the Galaxy S 3, saying this is something worth the look. I fell in love. It was what I wanted, what I needed.
A year goes by with my lovely Galaxy S 3. Not a scratch on it's face, not a drop to it's name. I cherished the phone and used it for my everyday needs. Then comes the day when I went on a run without my armband. Normally I put my S 3 in an armband, bag, pocket, or anything but for some reason I didn't that day. I was holding my phone in my hand, as I had done before, and was running through the neighborhood. Then, I started to get a little tired and without thinking went to stretch my arm when my phone flew from my grip. ****. Cracked screen.
Not wanting to risk breaking my phone even more I took it to Verizon. They gave me the number and told me to make an Asurion Insurance claim. Since I had the $100 deductible that's what I did. Once on the website I was informed that they no longer had my Blue 32 GB Galaxy S 3 in stock. I was pretty bummed and had to look at the other two options. The first was a White 32 GB Galaxy S 3. OK, I compared the details and something about it wasn't right. The battery life much less and some other odd things. Fine, I looked at my other option. A Black 32 GB Galaxy S 3. Wait, that's not right, there is no Black S 3 for Verizon or any carrier I thought. I took a closer look, Black 32 GB Galaxy S 4. Well, well, well. Now what would be the smart decision, a seemingly worse S 3 or the new and improved S 4. I think you know what choice I made.
Fast forward two days when my S 4 is supposed to arrive. It gladly does and I am so very happy to activated it. I turned off my S 3 after the final goodbyes and what not, put the battery in the S 4 and turned it on. Something isn't right. The loading process went OK, but there is something wrong with the screen. It had this ugly, thick, brown looking film on my screen. Not like the plastic that comes on the screen, but actually inside of the phone that's only noticeable when you turn it on. I go through the whole installation process and it doesn't go away, I change the brightness, anything desperate to fix it, nothing. I do some research and it states how it is a hardware connection issue, but there was no report of brown screens, only green ones. I guess it was the same issue.
Slightly-enraged that my good luck had gone bad I called up Asurion. They told me everything I should do to try and fix it, but nothing worked. So, they offered to send me a new-new S 4 free of charge. I happily agreed. Another two days go buy and my new-new phone has arrived. Finally, everything was working fine and here I am, happy with my fully functional S 4. I guess in the end my luck really did shine through.
Hope you guys didn't mind the story, and I think it would be cool if you guys shared how you got from your start with android to the Galaxy S 4.
