[Q] Install Busybox not working - HTC Droid DNA

I'm trying to install BusyBox on my HTC Droid DNA. I rooted the phone using the Jcase method.
I'm choosing the "normal install" method for Busybox and it keeps saying unsuccessful.
Question: Is it safe to try the "smart install" method? Has anyone else installed Busybox successfully?
What I'm trying to do: Just be able to do Linux stuff like edit files, etc. I'm told I need this software.
Thanks.
Joe

Ok, I think it worked. I booted into recovery, then used a .zip file that also contains SuperUser SU from a forum posting on rooting the DNA. I am almost 100% sure this was the file (I forgot to remember the link, but this was in my history):

Did you get this officially fixed then?
Sent from my HTC DNA.

Technically, yes. It is installed.
wget isn't working, and I need to play with it, but yes, Busybox is on now.

Do you still have the zip that you downloaded?
That link is broken, says that the file was deleted.
I'm running into the same problem, with either crashing my phone or saying that it failed.

You need a kernel that allows write to system.

I dunno... I kinda like the stock kernel.
Do I really need to change kernels in order to install BusyBox through recovery mode?
I'm sure there are other kernels that are a lot better than stock, but I'm not super adventurous. Just rooting was a lot, but I really wanted to have more functionality in Tasker and Titanium Backup. Once I get BusyBox I think I'm done for a while.

There is stock with system write. You can do whatever you want in recovery, but installing it normally, or updating it, or updating su will not work.

no root after OTA....

alright, how bad did I screw up here? Got the OTA notification last night, read nothing but good things and most keeping root through the process. I missed an important detail of using the OTA rootkeeper. So I'm currently on the latest update and lost root. I've tried one click 1.1 to no avail so far. I am unlocked and was rooted prior, but never got around to installing a recovery (hadn't found a ROM I was quite happy with enough to lose all my data just yet)
So.. all that said, is there a root option for the latest OTA yet?

Yes, all you need to do is flash Amon Ra through fastboot and reboot to recovery .. under the developer menu option on Amon Ra you have the option to install SU and superuser . Just run that and reboot you would have to unlock of course to install Amon Ra
Looks like I'm installing AmonRa today. Thanks!!!! I'm from a moto world where CWM and SPR are all we had.. the feature to install SU binary from recovery is new to me haha

Odd, do you have the superuser app in your app drawer ? Otherwise , I heard to download it from the market and it will work .
I did it this way and I read about it from others that did it this was as well.
I need some help, please - I may have made a very bad assumption here...
I just got my Rezound today (upgrading from a Thunderbolt). I saw the stickied thread about how (relatively) easy it was to perm-root the phone after the bootloader was unlocked, and I assumed that this all still applied after getting the OTA update (not realizing that the OTA update was JUST released - my assumption was that it was older and already dealt with).
So I got the OTA first thing after activating the phone, THEN unlocked the bootloader, THEN tried to root via One Click - I tried both OneClickRoot_1.1 and Super OneClick 2.3.3.0, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I'm getting "Permission denied" errors on mounts and "read-only file system" errors for CHMods and file copies during the Zerg Rush process. It says "Congrats you are now perm rooted", but it doesn't seem to be true - I was able to install SuperUser from the market, but the BusyBox installer says it can't find the su binaries, so I'm not convinced SuperUser is actually working.
Considering that I never had root access to the phone prior to installing the OTA, is there anything I do besides waiting for one or more of the root tools to be updated to deal with the new OTA?

I would try the rooted stock rom, but just not sure why it didn't work for you . I did all the steps you did and I was rerooted afterwards. Are you getting the pop up for superuser when an app asks for permission ? Sorry, was trying to be helpful
got it.. had to attempt the SU install twice.. also reboot DIRECTLY from recovery, do NOT reboot back to bootloader. I think that's what killed it for me. And yes in the end I did have to install the superuser app from the market to get it working again.

I'm having a serious issue here - for unknown reasons (I have NOT installed any ROMS or ANY non-OTA updates whatsoever), my Rezound is no longer able to connect to Verizon's network, for data or voice (it just says "no service"; WiFi works fine). As I said in my previous post on the previous page, I just got the phone today, and was trying to use OneClick to root my phone, but it isn't working because of the OTA update, and at some point I think the radio got screwed up.
So my intended remedy was to download the rooted stock rom and install that, but, naturally, it doesn't pass signature verification on the stock recovery. So I tried to follow another set of instructions to get AmonRa recovery installed, but the bootloader keeps rejecting the PH98IMG.zip file, telling me (depending on which one I try to use) that there's "no image or wrong image" or "Main Version is older! Update Fail!". Furthermore, I tried to extract the PH98IMG.zip file from the rooted stock rom file that I downloaded from the link on this site, but that zip file is corrupted (it won't open on my PC, even after I re-downloaded the rom).
Can someone help me figure out how to get AmonRa installed? From there, I can hopefully get the rooted stock rom installed. OR, at the very least, help me run a radio update so the phone will at least work until an easier root method becomes available?
Thanks.

I got the rooted ota rom installed easily, and better yet, the root worked perfectly. The problem is, I still can't connect to any wireless networks (aside from wifi).
I used the tool linked in the previous response to flash a boot.img I got out of this thread (specifically, the stock 2.01.605.11 w/ 1/26 OTA), but still nothing.
Any thoughts?

back. After reboot, I installed superuser from market, then updated the binary.
Titanium Backup now works and I can confirm regaining root after the OTA update. To protect myself from this in the future, I have installed OTA RootKeeper. OTA RootKeeper has been confirmed to backup superuser and is a simple way of restoring superuser after an OTA.
I did not have to backup anything on the internal sdcard, as I did not lose any data through this process, but it never hurts to do it, just in case. I am running the stock Rom, and unlocked through HTC-dev.
Thanks to con247 and andybones for pointing me in the right direction.

flashable root/su package?

I'm dev-unlocked and have TWRP installed, no root yet.
what's the consensus on the better/stable/happier su package, supersu vs superuser?
ALSO and almost more importantly, where can i find a flashable zip for either. i know everyone says just flash a rooted ROM, but that's not what i want to do. just looking for a file i can flash in recovery or push via adb. been searching and can't find any options that don't redo everything at once (ie. dev unlock and install recovery)
already been through all of that, just want to add root. thoughts? links? non-sequiturs?

yeah, that's where i'm at. the tutorial/everything page has everything you could ever want if you were starting from zilch; but no "here's just the su binaries and app" zip that i can find. there's every variety of "one click" solution but it doesn't seem like anyone publicizes the step-by-step pieces.
i did dev-unlock and then flashed twrp via fastboot because i wanted a nandroid backup of my "virgin" setup. now if i could just push su to it i would have my setup/ROM with root and not have to wipe my phone and start with somebody else's. not that i'm knocking those efforts because at some point i'm going to start flashing ROMs on this thing, but i'm not ready to blow away all my data just to get root. of course there's always the remote possibility that i could flash the stock 2.13 rooted rom and restore my own data partition and it would work without being flaky, but i never had success doing that on my transform.
i guess i could always download one of the one-clicks and tear it apart and see if i can't figure something out on my own, but i have no experience doing that whatsoever

You can't flash root to a phone with a zip. You need to look up the specific instructions for your phone, and most likely will factory reset your device.

not yet. my wife was getting made at me for not being fully engaged in her prattling so i had to shut the laptop for the night.
i was looking at the update script and it does some goofy stuff with the maps.apk and youtube.apk that seems to (at least from other comments in the thread) cause some unwanted aggravation with those apps. i asked the question what/why and the answer i got was an assumption that they were being moved temporarily to make sure there was room in /system for the su binaries and then moved back.
i don't know if that's necessary or not, but i kind of doubt it. just like to know what's happening in the background and not monkey with things that don't need monkeyin'.
i've got a working zip for SuperSU v0.96 that i've stripped the stuff out of it that moves around the maps and youtube apks, doesn't seem to be necessary on our devices. sent a pm to chainfire about posting it but haven't heard back yet. or maybe i just can't send pms

[Q] DNA Keeps unrooting?

So I used the rooting guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996389 and found a different superuser/busybox package to use. (don't remember the link right now).
However, whenever I open SuperSU to try to update it, it says installation failed or just reboots. And if I try to use root things for AdFree, it can't find the partition or just restarts.
Is anyone else having this problem or is there a different SU package I should use? My bootloader IS unlocked.

Ive been using ViperDNA which comes with what seems like a custom SuperUser type of all in it.
But when I origionally rooted my phone, i seem to remember having an issue with SuperSU, and the first time i rooted i said screw it and just installed Superuser without any problems. The second time i rooted, i Installed SuperSU, then had to download Superuser form the Android Market, to update the binary, which updated it for SuperSU, and that solved my problem.
When you try to open an app that needs to use root access, do you get the notification asking for permission?
perhaps the "other" superSU/busybox package that you used didn't properly do what it needed to do?
I see the link on that tutorial is broken, fortunately i have the file that i originally downloaded form that very same tutorial saved to my hard drive, and now uploaded to DropBox if you would like to download it and try flashing this zip while in recovery to see if it gives you a proper root.
I would recommend downloading the above file, and flashing that to see if it helps. I'll try to remember to check back here to see if you posted anything in reply, but let me know if it doesn't work. Ill try to help as much as I can

I installed your package, and get the same errors before in SuperSU. It wants to upgrade but then force restarts whilst trying.
I then tried the Superuser app by Chainsdd, and I make a little progress?
First, when I try to upgrade, it asks for root from SuperSU and Superuser. Since SuperSU came with the busybox package, I can't uninstall it.
When I first go to the updater, it shows me this: (See attachment 1, I can't do links :S)
After I upgrade it, I am left with this screen: (see attachment 2)
It looks like it reverts back to su v .98 from 1.02?
Either way, as soon as I hit lets do it again, the phone restarts. Did I screw up the unlock/root somehow? In the top left of my fastboot screen it shows ***TAMPERED*** and ***UNLOCKED***
I am using CWM 6.0.2.1

It's difficult for me to troubleshoot when i haven't had to fix this problem since december haha.
The tampered, and unlocked is standard that is what it shows for everyone who unlocked the boot-loader.
So let me get this straight,
Do me a favor, un-install Superuser, download RootChecker from the market by JoeyKrim, And run it, what does it say?
->When you run it, did it ask for permission from SuperSU?
With just the SuperSU installed, if you run a program that requires root permission (For example, RootChecker), Nothing shows up asking if you want to Allow/Deny?
->When you open SuperSU to update the binary, it fails to update and restarts the APP?
With the SuperSU/BusyBox package flashed, when you install Superuser from the android market and try to update the binary, it *appears* to revert back to an older version of the binary?
-> After updating the binary through Superuser (despite the appparent reversion), if you un-install Superuser, and try to run RootChecker, does it work?
Sorry, i know it is a lot and i'm not much help, i'm troubleshooting blindly and from a distance haha.

Now I have looked through the directory to see if I can find this apk and I have no luck...i get permission denied.
I also had my GS3 rooted before I got the GS4 and I am wondering if it has something to do with that. I deleted all my titanium backups off of my sd card. Do I try factory resetting my phone (which I really don't want to do!) and possibly removing the sd card while rooting?? I need some advice, or solution to this.
Thanks!
Have you tried a clean odin flash and then rooting?

What I did, I'm assuming you'll have to do.... Install the trial version of vmware fusion, install a copy of Win XP (700mb download). Install the Samsung drivers that you can find in all the how-tos listed in these forums. Then flash your exploit in Odin 3.xx. I had a issue with the Su updating it's binaries, so while I was in the pre-release kernel I deleted and installed chainfires Su. Then rebooted and flashed the MDK kernel. Hope this helps.

I have done this and still getting the failure.
I also don't want to run vmware on my mac, I had rooted my s3 on my mac with no issues whatsoever, so I want to do this the mac way, not windows.
I rooted running VM just fine. Im not sure there is a mac root out for it. Have you tried the all in one tool - root + Recovery

I haven't tried that, never heard of the all in one tool.
There is a root out for the mac, several youtube videos on it and I am following it correctly just failing.

I am just going to try it on my pc that I have with Odin, I wanted to originally do it with the mac but lets see how this works.
Make sure when u odin the stock image you boot back into stock recovery and do a factory reset. then you will be back to square one.

So I HAVE to do a factory reset? That sucks, not sure if that is worth it to me. I may hold off till the mac root is proven to work

I think he's saying to flash a 100% stock OEM image before even attempting anything else, NOT a factory reset.
Probably won't hurt, since you are using a mac n stuff. Just because there are youtube videos..... yeah...
There are 2 distinct choppers out there too! The one linked in xda is NOT the original one posted, and there could be other variants out there... pinterestering.

What do you mean when you say "flash" a 100% oem image? How is that different than a factory reset? Thanks

What do you mean when you ask this and go against good advice as a precaution? You don't have to, but you are having uber weird issues already.
For all we know, it's related to "Caller Name ID" or "mac". Or it could be something uber simple. Hard to diag over the internet.
tl;dr/summary: you have root installed but not in your apps tray, causing issues on a mac.

Well I successfully rooted via Odin!!! It doesnt work on the mac yet because I was using the stock kernel MDK and I needed to flash the MD2 Kernel on Odin....I put the stock kernel back on. Thanks everyone for the help.
Any idea why I randomly get the custom lock image which has the samsung logo above it when I reboot sometimes?

[Q]Hydro Icon & Root

Has anyone made any kind of progress with the Kyocera Hydro Icon?
A few things id like to note.
1.I have rooted my icon via Bin4rys root with restore v35.
After rooting,my root apps seem to function to their fullest potential.
2.i was able to get into stock recovery via terminal,im unsure of the button combo if there is one.
"su reboot recovery" gives me that android recovery 3e.also there is am option,"apply update from sdcard".maybe thats a way custom recovery can be loaded?
Im not a pro at all this,i just know some basic info about bash.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT:i was able to dump stock recovery, but i have no idea how to build on windows.
heres a link to my dropbox with the "recovery.img" file & also the recovery.fstab file as well.
if someone can build thisinto TWRP/CWM that'd be amazing,

Still no root even with the google glass option. This phone baffles me, and is the only device i have yet to be able to get root on. Not outta ideas or patience yet though, so i will keep beating on it till it breaks or gives.

after reading thru the script, and several other tools that use this exploit, i have noticed that my phone doesn't have /system/app/Backup-restore.apk (best i can tell thats a xperia app) or /system/bin/ric. it seems the exploit works via some bug in these two files. could you look and see if your phone has these files? and if so, what version of the system software are you running?
System software version is 1.003BT,& i have a backuprestore apk & odex file in my /system/app directory.
The /system/bin/ric file is not present also.

Hi i read your help request in twrp thread and i can try to help you.is there any source about your device?
you will need to provide more than these 2 files for twrp to be compiled...
kernel would be needed but also device information...and some others file(s) like init.rc
can you provide kernel, stock boot.img(or working custom boot.img) ...might be needed some part of official recovery .
What is device resolution?
you can pm me if you want, i can try to compile Twrp for you...
i don't own the device so you will be on your own to push recovery in device and test it.
I can get you the stock boot img,im not sure about the kernel id have to be near a pc to split it to get the kernel.as far as i know there is no source.
EDIT:I found a guide to dump & split the boot image on my phonr, and succeeded.i will upload the boot.img, kernel & anything else you need t my dropbox folder ive shared.

Device resolution is 540x960.i sent you a few pms.and yes i dont mind pushing it to my recovery partition myself

Use Option 0 (Zero) make sure you get the pwn binary and place it in the right folder. Instructions for this on Bin4ry's download post. Enjoy!:good:

worked for me
Thanks a ton. I had tried every option in many different ways numerous times. After placing the correct file in the correct directory my phone was rooted. Did not give me verification...only errors. I had to download root browser and attempt to change system files as well as use titanium backup for verification. Although root checker would have worked as well. Lost root numerous times trying different things aka rom toolkit and safestrap just trying out a few things but was able to recover root very easily again. In it.d support working for me as well as a few scripts. Thanks for the help. Let me know if I can help.

How did you root the Hydro Icon? I have it on the Latest OTA cuz the Boost Guy did it when I told him NOT TO Specifically!
But trying to see if it'll still work. I've discovered Roms Before and I'm curious for this Lil guy. Thanks! And I hope an Official Tool to get this Device rooted come Out (More better the one we can root with in the Device!!!)
