[Q] Replacing S Voice with Google Now!? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys,
i been lately thinking about getting a Bluetooth receiver in my car,
finally i found this good idea, bought it 2 weeks ago, and got it delivered today
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160918297575?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
so far I like it, and it charges with the same my phone charger cable, so no need for an extra cable in my car, it works great with my aux cable, the only issue i am facing is when i hold the function button to launch the voice search app, it brings up S Voice not Google now,
is there any way to substitute?

If you go into S-voice settings there should be a box to uncheck....?

You can turn off S Voice being linked to the home button, then search around on the Play Store until you find a third party app that lets you map buttons to launch apps. Set it to launch Google Now from the home button via a long press/double tap/whatever you'd like, and you should be all set.

Thanks for ur help,
i use Home 2 Shortcut app to launch Google Now with double home button press, but i need to launch Google Now from my Bluetooth function button without taking my phone out of my pocket

I personally prefer SVoice. One thing you can do on SVoice and NOT google....
"create a reminder for tomorrow at 11am.....call Rob about switching to Google Now"
SVoice will ask, "shall I create this appointment"....to which you simply say, "yes please"
Google will say, "I can't do that".....to which you simply say...."wish I had listened to that guy on xda forums".

I'm in the same boat as you. 95% of the voice commands I use are for dialing via bluetooth. My fiance is Asian and SVoice falls on it's face with her name whereas Google Voice never had an issue on my GNexus.

Just downloaded jelly bean hoping google now vpice is better then s voice

[Q] Google Voice Search issues

Hello All,
I searched for any related posts and could not locate any reference to my problem. I would greatly appreciate any input.
One of my favorite features on my old EVO 4G was the voice search for navigation. I could give it very limited information and it found places, products, etc like nobody's business.
I upgraded to the EVO 4G LTE today and it came with Google Voice Search installed. First I could not even locate the app. When searching at Google Play for the app I am made aware that it is already installed. There does not appear to be an update option at this point.
Firstly I would like to find a better way to locate, paste to the home page or launch the app (once I get it to work that is). Secondly and most important when I launch the app through what is discovered on Google Play the microphone page appears but then the app locks up.
I have also tried just the Navigation app and when I speak directions it seems to take the input fine, but the results are seriously random and for the most part quite irrelevant.
I have played with the settings and the maps apps seems to have my location pegged pretty good.
Any thoughts on getting better results or instructions on removing the factory install of Google voice search or updating it?
If it makes a difference all testing has been done on WiFi from my home network.
Thanks for any input you might have.
I havent tested mine at length but my google maps speak destination function works just as well as it did on my Evo. The voice function of the search app works also, but it does take a second to be ready for voice input. As for removing the factory installs of both of those apps, you would need at least root to be able to delete them, and there is a mod for rooted users to flash to the stock rom or ViperROM that will get rid of the bottom menu bar and map the recent apps to home long press and menu to the recent apps softkey, OR it can do the same without getting rid of the menu bar. I think there is also a variant of the mod that also maps voice search to recent apps long press, but don't quote me on that. Either way, for right now it seems the only way to try and solve the problems you have is to either root it, wait it out, or return the phone and see if a new one works better.

[Q] Launching Apps Without Voice

This may be a dumb question, but is there a way to launch Wear apps without using voice? For example, Evernote Wear seems to require that I use voice or pull out my phone and open the Evernote app. That seems to defeat the purpose of having a screen on my wrist that responds to touch...
Is it there if you go into the voice search menu and then scroll down? That's where the settings and things are so I'd expect apps to be listed there.

Yeah, it appears you have to go to the voice menu, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap "Start..." to see the list of apps. Seems like kind of a kludgy way to do it, but I'm just glad there's an option.
I think the watch is mainly made to be navigated by voice.

This. It works just fine with voice, but it gets awkward in public when you have to say "ok google open notes". Hopefully they will add a feature to launch apps directly from the homescreen as the scrolling down in the voice menu takes way longer than opening the app on the phone anyway.

I'm convinced the Gear S was an excellent purchase for me

After 2 days I can say with conviction that the Gear S is a worthy investment for the money.
A little research and I've got it all set up to my needs.
- Getting Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, & text messages, all with the ability to reply
- Getting my Google Now alerts (traffic, weather, etc)
- Streaming Milk Music as standalone
- Opera Mini browser enables me to check/reply/send Gmail, browse/interact with Facebook, Google Search, etc
- Enabled continuous swipe input in the stock keyboard in settings
- Changed my voice-wake to "OK Google"
- Battery easily lasts me almost 2 days entire day with moderate use
I can't think of a single thing that I am disappointed about. And that's saying a lot as I had high expectations.
If you're on the edge of buying this, I say go all in. Speaking of which, I'm on the Edge as well. T-Mobile
I just got mine today and so far I'm loving it. I only wish you had a manual to show me how to set mine up like that especially replying to Facebook messages.

I'm using Gear Notification Extender (Play Store, have to purchase but worth it) Plus install Android Wear but don't set it up. Open it then back out. Set everything up in Gear Notification Extender, and disable the regular S Gear notifications from the Gear Manager app unless you want duplicate notifications. If you need help let me know

My question is...IF the app shows in Gear manager and in Extender, why is extender needed if GM says it will notify?

After testing today I answered my last question. You, sir, just kept me from returning the watch. With this app I no longer need to touch my phone. I can do everything directly from the watch, by way of responding. I have had my phone on silent all day and managing all things via watch.

Glad I could help. That's what we're all on XDA for!
I think the GS is the most amazing piece of personal tech I have ever come across (IT technician by profession).
I used to carry two phones, one personal and one work, which was a pain. Now I carry a Note 4 as my personal and the GS as my work phone. I run the GS in remote connect mode during the week so it acts as a stand alone number, then on weekends I run it in Bluetooth mode as a companion to my Note (I don't take work calls on the w/e). My exchange account syncs mail, contacts, appointments, etc across all my devices. Emailing, appointments, adding contacts, etc I do on my Note which syncs with the GS. Business calls/msgs I take on the GS and private calls/msgs on the Note.
This solves all my problems and works fantastically.
The GS is incredibly versatile and that may be it's biggest fault - too complex for the average user. Just read many of the posts on here and it is clear that people have no idea about it's features and functionality.
I feel same as you guys. I enjoy my phone everyday. Makes life easier for me. Only issue I am having is that if I get a text message and I go to reply the keyboard won't pop up. I have to go and close all apps thrn go back into messaging app then it works. Any ideas?

I'm having some issue getting what looks like a duplicate for email alerts.
GNE Notifications in Gear Manager = ON
Email Notifications in GNE = ON
Email Notifications in Gear Manager = OFF
I get the email alert 1x with the reply arrows, then again with an "open on Android" at the bottom. Not sure where I'm failing the process. Very excited to get this sussed, this may keep the Gear S in my hands, was getting pretty discouraged!
Thanks for the help.

Congrats to the Gear S and the S6 Edge. May your battery last a long time!
I found Opera in the Samsung app store, that I accessed through Gear Manager. From within Gear Mgr, once connected to your Gear S, you can install all the gear apps you want (not that there are that many). Hope this helps.

Is it possible they took it out of the store in the last couple days?

I just checked and you are right: Samsung seem to have removed the app, and I can't even find the other browser I saw in there.
It used to be one of the very first apps popping up in the store.
I'm sure we can share the Opera file with you, I just have no clue how it's done.
Damn--looks like I missed it by a matter of DAYS...
Well, at least I know I'm not crazy now. Thanks guys!
Does anyone know a way of manual installing the app into the watch?

Does Google assistant work for anyone on this phone? When I long press the on screen home button nothing happens and OK Google no longer works. The OK Google works partially in the Google app but that is on an old version

Not sure if this will help, but depending on the ROM you have installed (ie Lineage, I couldn't get google voice to listen and follow instructions from any screen. On Eragon however (which I have on my phone) you have the option to use "OK Google" from any screen (and Voice lock can be used as well) & the Google voice menu is different in Eragon compared to Lineage. In Eragon - its under settings >> Google >> Voice
From what I saw in Lineage its kinda under Settings >> Google >> Search (and I saw a voice menu but it doesn't allow voice commands from anywhere on the phone, just within Google Now from what I worked out).. it was pretty confusing to me, but i guess each ROM has different google gapps etc..
But Eragon (for me anyway) didn't do this by default, what I did was install the Google Now Lanucher and use it maybe once, then Installed my usual launcher Nova Launcher Prime and I can use Ok Google commands anywhere on the phone, even at lockscreen, as long as screen is on , so you can unlock the phone with your voice if that's your thing.
I know the Google assistant is the new kinda Google Voice and I ain't to sure of the changes between them both if I'm honest. From what I have heard you can get a "light taster" of Google assistant in the Google Allo app (although I have not tried this). But I can use Google Voice anywhere on my phone with Eragon using the OK Google command, (infact I use it ALL the time in my car - only time i use it as its handy for making calls / texts especially combined with Drivemode app) (& no pressing of speech button) providing you install Google Now and then use your preferred launcher. Obvioulsy as its always listening I guess it will use more battery, but as I only use in car with charger, its cool for me. Anyway, hope it helps you somewhat

I couldn't get google assistant on Lineage at all I'm afraid (see my post above) , under Settings >> Google >> Search >> Voice on Eragon I get full functionality - unfortunately in Lineage it only has minimum Google Voice options (like you cant use voice from anywhere on handset - incl lock-screen)
There maybe a work around, (maybe ask in Lineage thread) but couldn't get it to work, I guess you can try and install Google Now Launcher (then just continue using your usual launcher) and see if it adds any further functionality - not an ideal solution as you have an extra launcher using resources in background, but worth a go
btw, there is another thread on the Elephone Forum which may help others regarding this: http://bbs.elephone.hk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=13230&fromuid=90419#.WMqlQTuLSUk

Finally figured out why saying "OK Google" wasn't launching Google assistant on Note8

Finally figured out why saying "OK Google" wasn't launching Google assistant on Note8
This has been extremely frustrating, but I figured it out. On ALL my other phones (N4, N7 S7E, S8+) saying "Ok Google" opened up google assistant as it should. But not on the Note 8. I had it working for a little while yesterday, but did not know HOW I got it working. Today it stopped working again. I have spent a couple hours today fiddling with every setting, disabling/re-enabling Bixby with BK, etc, etc to get "Ok Google" to work. Well, I figured out why it wasn't working. On the Note 8, if you have your phone on any of the battery saver modes (I had my S8+ and my N8 on the "mid" saver mode), OK Google does not work. Turn off battery saver mode and it works.
So for whatever reason, Samsung changed the battery saver mode on the N8 from what the S8+ had. I always had mid mode turned on with my S8+ - it gives you about an hour more battery life. But on the S8+ OK Google voice still opened up the assistant. Not on the Note 8. Just a tip for anyone else who couldn't figure out why they couldn't open up google assistant with voice command.
This is pretty standard, since battery saver restricts most background services. Thanks for the confirmation!
It wasn't standard on the Note 7, S7E or S8+ - I have all of those and mid battery saver does not deactivate the "Ok Google" voice activation. Samsung must have changed that on the N8.
BTW, I am getting a software update downloading from VZ as I speak... maybe they will address this in the new update? I'm always nervous accepting pushed factory updates. It is installing now, so I will know soon!
so n00b q for you then since your well above me (coming from a note 3)...

Yes, the intent of Bixby is to replace the Google Assistant. But, many people (including myself) have found Bixby to be rather lacking in the assistant realm. It may get better with updates over time (depending on how much money Samsung want to throw at it) but for now, I prefer ok google.

Samsung wants to force you to use Bixby instead of google assistant. I am not fond of Bixby and much prefer google assistant. Below are the steps to get rid of Bixby and make Google Assistant your default assistant app.
BK disabler app is what you need. DL it from the play store. Once you do that you can disable all bixby functions - just search for Bixby with BK Disabler and disable all of the bixby apps. Doing this will also disable the Bixby button from doing anything. Now you can set your google app to open up when you say "Ok google". Also, you can remap the Bixby button to open up the google assistant with BK disabler's advanced settings menu which is up in the top right corner of the BK disabler app.

I use both though. I disabled wake up for Bixby voice but google assistant and Bixby work fine side by side. I just feel like from reading your post people might assume google assistant doesn't work like normal with Bixby still running.
Bixby has some neat tricks up its sleeves, but Google is still the king of internet search. Bixby is better at controlling your phone hands free.

I dunno. Maybe I need to retrain it because I have to call it three times to get it rolling but while I'm watching tv it sets itself off repeatedly with the sensitivity down.
Also I have to speak slower to get it to recognize what the hell I am saying when I use it to voice text. I turn around and say something in a noisy room to google quickly and it catches every word and adjusts words based on the context of the entire sentence.

If Samsung doesn't improve it like it just left S-Voice as a mess, I won't use it either. It can become something great if Sammy just supports it.

Can you elaborate on this? I would really like ok Google to work with the screen off, but I don't have that option.
I can do Ok Google when screen is ON. But when off, it will detect my voice but will not respond.
I can see Ok Google Edge light up when being called.

Hello
I use both - I love that I can give multiple commands in one Quick Command, and Bixby will perform them without a hitch. But I also know that for websearch etc, I use OK Google. I think this is the best of both worlds.
thanks
