[Q] strange wifi behaviour [cm10.1] - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi!
first of all i dont know if this is a s2, cm10.1 oder generell jb issue, got this problem on cm10 and cm9 as well.
following setup:
vdsl50, fritzbox 7390 running latest fw, wpa2 encryption, located in basement.
s2, running cm10.1 12.12.2012, baseband/modem I9100XXLQ6,no custom kernel(cm kernel)
(as refference) zte blade,running cm7, android 2.3.7
ground floor, when i enable wifi on s2 everything is fine, it connects with 65mbit/s and says good/excellent signal strength (wifi analyzer ~ -56dbm), after about 1-2 minutes it drops down to 5mbit/s ,however no connection drops.
i tryed same with my old zte blade, just for testing purpose and it connects fine with 54mbit/s and stays there, no drops at all.wifi analyzer shows same signal strength as on the s2.
i already tryed wep/no encryption on wifi ap, changed channel, switching 2,4ghz vs 5ghz.even when i'm just 1m away from the ap, no wall between it has excellent signal strength but still drops to 5mbit/s after 1 minute.
i also tryed several modems ( KH3, LQ6, LQ5, LS6) and matching RILs using GetRIL, nothing worked
i cant believe blade is performing that good in comparison to the s2...
anyone got a similar problem?i think its software related bei i don't know how it can be fixed
thx guys for your help

Your expecting stable WiFi connection on a pre alpha rom, on a device whose manufactures refuse to release the source code for the phone???

no i'm aware cm10.1 is in early alpha stage but got this issue on cm10, cm9, stock 4.0.4 und leaked jb stock as well so i guess its not caused by cm10.1

wifi shareing not working on GS2

got my gs2 1 month ago, tried wifi sharing last night, not working. thought it were rom bug, flashed another rom, Exynos Extreme 5.0 with KH3, still not working. I connected my laptop and galaxy tab 10.1 to GS2 phone, wifi tethering is on, but I cannot open any webpage at all. is this a hardware problem? is there any way to fix it?

ICS | JB: WiFi reception

Hello guys.
How is you WiFi reception using ICS or JB (stock | custom)?
I ve noticed that with ICS stock my WiFi reception above 30m (dist x) is very poor or none (AP is behind house wall, no obstacles).
With HC3.2 on 30-35m (dist X+) i had valid and working WiFi reception (AP on same place, same conditions more less).
On same spot (dist X+) my laptop receives healthy WiFi signal.
So i ve come to conclusion that ICS rom does not handle WiFi capabilities of our GTab as good as HC did.
Your meaningful comments and suggestions are very welcome.
Cheers,
melodystyle2003
*bump*
So i only have this issue or not?
Problem solved after formatting/wipe data, system and dalvik and flashing JellyBeanRom ICS v6 via CWM 5.8.3.1.
At same dist X+ spot i have now ~25% signal strength!

[Q] CM10 wifi drop offs consistently

Hi,
I am running NT 16gb CM10 with 0.06 build from chrmhoffman. I am consistently having my wifi dropped in couple routers, but my home router (older) seems to stay connected all the time. The signal was strong before connection in all cases, but in the dropped wifi cases, the signal drops to less then a bar after connected, and it would only connect for couple minutes at a time and drop off. Any suggestions? I have installed wifi fixer, but no help.
From his post:
0.06 (starts to incorporate Android 4.1.2 changes)
Changelog:
- wifi (potential compatibility fixes as described here: https://github.com/loosethisskin/and...b6ff1ceb6eca8b. Thx to meghd00t.)
- upstream sync with cyanogenmod (4.1.2 as of 10-10-2012)
Is the above potential compatibility fixes apply here? If so, which file should i amend?
Thanks so much!

you should try upgrading to the newer builds of cm10 first and see if that fixes your problem.

I had trouble with the wifi, too.
When you upgrade to the later images, be sure to format /storage first. That fixed my problem.
CM10 wifi drop offs consistently
I have the same problem with every CM10 ROM I've tried, even the newest SGT7+CM10+Cherry Picks,By meghd00t released 11/24. (only drops about every 5 min or so, which is better than any other cm10 ROM I've tried) I've managed to trace the problem back to the router, for some reason CM10 causes it to randomly reboot. I'm assuming this is either because of the European region code that can't be changed or a driver issue causing a loop-back fault in the older routers. I'm using a NT8gb with a D-Link DIR-655 rev.A router.
Only suggestion I can offer is to buy a new router that plays nice with CM10.
P.S. I've read in other forums that a lot of people are having the same issue with android devices running JB

Instead of buying a new router you could try loading DD-WRT or Tomato firmwares. That is if your router supports it.
Sent from my CM 10 SD nook tablet. Thanks devs.
I read somewhere about a user setting to keep Wi-Fi alive somewhere in advanced options. Might be worth looking into.

It's a router issue not a device issue. Setting WiFi to "keep alive" won't fix the router cycling.
Sent from my CM 10 SD nook tablet. Thanks devs.
Workaround
After a few days of research I've found a few workarounds. Apparently my router was made with insufficient RAM and the chipset doesn't support DD-WRT.
Option 1:
Partition the wifi in advanced wireless settings. Router still cycles but it only cycles the partition that the nook is on.
Option 2:
Enable the guest zone and have the nook connect using the guest wifi. Same effect as partitioning the wifi, but only reduces internet speeds by 50%.
Option 3 (Best option):
Downgrade to the lowest possible firmware you can get your hands on. (in my case 1.11) Wifi still drops on nook, but not as frequently and it doesn't seem to cycle every connection on the router every time the nook drops. (You'll want to use a firmware with Draft N protocols instead of N protocols)
This works on DIR-655 rev. A routers, not sure if it'll help anyone else who's router doesn't support wireless N 5Ghz.
Got my hands on firmware 1.02 shortly after I wrote the above, network stability is a million times better now.
I hoped this issue was resolved but its not. Its a device issue not a router problem for me at least. Anyone have any ideas

Found an answer in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952141&page=25
Wireless N 2.4GHz has issues with the current CM10 builds, switch to 5GHz if your router supports it or turn off wireless N
Upgraded my router back to latest firmware to test this out, disabled wireless N (switched to G only mode), worked like a charm
I have the same problem, it seems to be a CM10 issue. I've chaged several times of rom and even changed my router but didn't help. Maybe rojasc is right, I will try that!

[Q] Wi-Fi Singal very low

Hello all!
I have been getting very low wi-fi signal on my nook since I upgraded from stock to CM10. I know its not the router , as it was doing fine with every other device on my network.
I'm on CM10, have tried the three major roms out there for CM10 ( PURE, sgt7+cherry picks, codefireX) just to see if it was rom side.
I'm just wondering what are my options here ? I can't walk outside my room without dropping the already weak signal .
I not having the same problem from crossfireX or earlier builds of PURE, sgt7+cherry picks. Make sure you wipe dalvik and factory reset wipe before you flash a rom. Try a router firmware update then start test by setting up g band only then setup n band on router if successful.

I have wiped dalvik and factory reset with all the roms I have flashed, and nothing is changing. Also, I have the default Verizon FIOS router(checked, firmware is up-to-date) and its on b/g mixed mode. I don't believe it can do wireless-N.
Let make sure it not the rom in question for you. Can you connect to like a friends, neighbor or a nearby hot spot which could simulate the same problem? If you connect with high bar within proximity to the router, then you know its not the rom. Do a speedtest.net or use the app on your device to test if your getting at least 12 Mbps. If you are getting higher rate then I would just ignore the bar.
Well looky that, I'm a Senior Member today, I guess I can get my discount at Ihop now.
Other ways of using a Intel laptop as a router is to have Intel My Wifi Utility to enable a hotspot function or ad hoc network test for your nt. Just a thought.

I have a spare linksys router I tested. Almost identical results were found. Should I re-flash stock and start from the beginning ? I mean, I can't take more then ten steps to my bathroom without dropping the signal.
I also did a speed-test.net , and got 12m/bs down and 4m/bs up. but that doesnt mean anything unless I'm inside my room.
Sounds like a good idea. Try this before the reflash. On the nook, how many access point do you see with 5 bars, if there is more than one then it's causing interference. Try setting a WPS pin in your router and in CM 10 describe in the "WPS Pin Entry" on your nook in wifi>touch the 3 dot in vertical alignment.

Bump....I'm having this problem with my NT too. OP did you ever solve this issue?
It was working fine for the passed 2 months, now it can't pickup any signals unless it sits a foot or so from the router. This sucks. Its basically rendering the tablet useless.
And so far what I have done:
Updated rom, wiped & reflashed, flashed new rom, nandroid back to updated rom. Only thing I haven't done is try a new kernel ( didn't think it would make a difference)
Fully checked router, all other devices on WiFi(5) are working fine in other rooms with 2+ bars.
Is there a way to check the input/output signal strength of the NT? Modifying this? It's starting to seem like a Hardware issue.
In the Google Play Store there's an app called "WiFi Analyzer" by FARPROC. Use that to check your signal strength on the router.
Bump, still having this issue, I was hoping by now there would be a solution. I'm just coming back to the tablet after many frustrating nights... To try and get it to work again.
Please this has got to be more common.. It used to work grrreat! My router is fine, my GNex has full bars, the Nook has 1 or 0 bars.
I just reflashed a new rom, updated kernal, same results. Is there a modem I need to flash or something?
What happens if you go back to stock using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910? Do you still get a weak signal then?

[help[ CM 10.1 pathetic wifi range

Hi!
I have been using CM 10.1 (latest nightly available at the time of posting this thread). I have noticed that my phone gets 4 out of 5 bars when I am within 2 meters of the router and after moving about 3 to 4 meters away, range drops to 1 out of 5 bars and even disconnects sometimes. To be honest, I was on supernexus v5 before cm10.1 and on liquidsmooth v2.7 before supernexus v5. I have had the same problem on all three roms. I have tried resetting my connection settings through an app which requires root and that didnot solve the problem. I was on a stock rom before these AOSP roms and the range was significantly better. If you have a solution, please respond. Any replies/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there friend,
If the problem is only the amount of signal bars then it's not a problem because the signal strength may vary between roms. If you're saying the problem occurs with other roms - have you tried to reset your router or with a different wifi network ?
