[Dev] USB OTG Tests - Nexus 4 Original Android Development

Recently google said OTG isnt supported on the nexus 4 device
So curiosity has got the better of me and I've requested for people to test a few things, this is a development thread created for USB OTG and getting it to work.
What we know:
The snapdragon s4 soc support otg (running all the time reads mdm as usb device)
Slimport support OTG
kernel supports OTG
Unsure about ROM
This is created from my mobile device, when i receive net access ill update this more
Kernel i built 2 weeks ago or so, supports OTG
If anyone with an OTG Cable can test and provide both logcat and dmesg when plugging in a device, to make it easier would prefer ps3 controller connecting. Ontop of that do 2 tests 1 without supplying power and 1 with supplying power.
Newer kernel http://d-h.st/o0O
Installation ZIP, http://d-h.st/o0O
Works on any ROM
Remember to modify build.prop and add ro.usb_host=1

Think ive just figured it out new kernel will be uploaded & mod lets hope it works need testers

Ill test the kernel to make sure its good and boots fine then ill drop the kernel, but i can only test to a certain extent i dont own an OTG Cable, also youll need to modify @ ROM level

Thanks man really appreciate the offer but that would take days, maybe even weeks to get here, Im in the UK, I was hoping to get the tests done and see if its possible or not pretty quickly
I've already sliced 2 usb cables, on my last one
Link to new kernel for Testing USB OTG, http://d-h.st/l5Y
also put into build.prop ro.usb_host=1
Give it a test, and please provide logs, thank you
EDIT: FOR STOCK ROM ONLY
(Thanks to endursa for reminding me)

Here you go
Flashable on any ROM
http://d-h.st/o0O
Just remember to put into build.prop
ro.usb_host=1

I don't have a PS3 controller, so this was tested using a standard USB thumbdrive, i also don't have a splitter to make it powered, so i'm afraid i can't test this either, this was the thumb-drive plugged directly into the phone:
dmesg:
http://pastebin.com/rsvsLGQr
logcat:
http://pastebin.com/p8SfDuEX
Both will expire in a day, in case i missed any personal information.

You would need to dirty flash the cm nightly again, then this kernel. I assume you were on Franco's kernel when flashing this one

I've tried it and flashed on stock rom. Boots fine but OTG doesn't work. The otg cable + thumb drive are working fine on Galaxy S2.
EDIT: I also added ro.usb_host=1 to build.prop

Do i need some app to see if USB thumbdrive working?
I flashed the kernel, added ro.usb_host=1, where do i see if USB thumbdrive mounted?

I have:
- an OTG cable
- a power USB Y cable
- a powered USB Hub
* USB keyboard/mouse
* USB pen drive

is it a known issue that N4 doesn't have USB +5V power supply?
So what's the purpose of this test? even if you manage to make it work, it won't be useful

Pay attention. He asked for testers to supply their own power as well. If a setup with external power is useful for even one person and he gets it working, then this has served a purpose.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.

Yes, OTG was disabled by Google during developement because they found out it couldn't supply 5V

I believe in the general complaint thread about no OTG someone spoke of a phone that wasn't able to supply 5V either, but it was infact doable after some modifications(software ones), so it may very well be that similar modifications here could work

Somethings funny
Cause if google advertised the device as USBOTG supported, then theyve setup the kernel for usbotg enabled, theyre saying the issue is no 5v, wouldnt supplying power bring USBOTG back? It isnt, so obviously it was taken away on purpose. If we can get around this and get USBOTG working is theee question.

hahah, not as bad as some others....
anyway, can we get a mod to change the maker of my first post to rigy?
Try looking at the Archos gen8 kernel sources. They use OMAP36XX and a similar PMIC if not the same one. I don't think the NC has a charge pump and don't think you can rely on ID to detect an otg cable.
Good luck!

Great Idea... I had questioned whether we just picked up this functionality in CM7 build of our drivers at least... so I plugged my Lexar flash drive formated FAT32 into a USB to micro USB adapter and plugged it into the Nook and rebooted to see if the the nook flashed the pwr to the drive as usually happens during init on other devices but unfortunately no luck... it doesn't pwr the conn during init...
But I've got plenty of devices I can test with if you get to a point that would help...

Evergreen has done a good bit of work on this already. He will be back next week.
I've also been actively working on this.
I have gotten the musb into a_idle in the past and also just echoing host into mode seems to start some of the transition. I'd pin seems to be a lost cause and I gave up on. It already.

It looks like rigy73 has already uncovered most all of what i've been able to pull together as well as some extra testing information. So glad everyone who has been looking at / working on this is coming together to share.
Here is a link (if needed) to more documents regarding TPS65921:
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tps65921.html
It contains the datasheet, and under technical documents has register manual.
This. I mean with this no more worrying about bluetooth keyboards! And hopefully we could even get crazy things like ddr pads working ;p. Talk about the ultimate game system on the go.
Two kernel patches added.
Have you contacted anyone on our CM7 team to include it in the kernels (fattire, dalingrin, etc)?
I haven't tested it personally, nor do i have any proof that it is actually working, it can be included once we know that there are no problems in the code.
Really interested in seeing this happen =D.

And has anyone been able to get this working?
THANK YOU!
Sorry for the screaming, but this is amazing. I was just looking into this this morning because, RcketScientist is working on a camera raw patch. This is the last thing my Nook needs. I am not great at compiling, but I will help when things get a bit more stable. Is this going to be able to patch the stock kernel? Will it be flashable? or incorporated into a new build? Sorry if I am jumping the gun.

[Q] Still no HDMI output using the HTC MHL adapter

Hello everyone.
This has been driving me crazy all day long.
I tried connecting the HTC AC M500 MHL adapter with my rooted Jestream to a TV using all sorts of tutorials and how-tos online, but to no avail.
The charger I am using is the HTC 9V, 1.67A one that's used for the Flyer.
The only things I have not tried yet are restoring factory settings, and using the HDMI capble that came with the MHL adapter.
I have tried connecting it to a Samsung 42" TV (model unknown) using a PS3 cable up to now.
Will attempt on a Sony 46" TV using the HDMI cable that came with the adapter on Monday, but until then, I just have to know what I've been doing wrong all this time.
I've been looking through forums, articles and YouTube videos all day long. It's driving me crazy.
Anyone have any ideas?
UPDATE: tried it on a Sony TV using the HTC HDMI cable with the MHL adapter while charging. Rebooted twice. Still nothing.
2nd UPDATE: tried turning HDMI control off on the Samsung TV (HDMI CEC). Still nothing.
Can anyone guess if unrooting the device and restoring factory settings would fix this?
have you tried putting the stock kernel back on? might be an issue with the doom kernel if that is what you are using.

No, but it's last on my list on things to try (that, along with the factory reset).
I will try using Airplane Mode ON, Media Sync ON as the default connection mode and USB Debugging OFF (I don't know why that's on my list, but there you go), before I try replacing the kernel.
Also, as far as the kernel's concerned: I checked on the kernel version and it seems to be the same as the stock kernel number and all. Was there an update on the doom kernel, or did I mess up the process and not install it properly?
Kernel version:
2.6.35.10-g01487c4
[email protected] #1
Well, I tried the above and still nothing. Kernel replacement's up next (assuming I don't have the stock one on already. Anyone care to confirm?), and factory reset as the last resort.
Could anyone tell me if I have the stock kernel installed?
Kernel version:
2.6.35.10-g01487c4
[email protected] #1
I am really inexperienced at this, and even though I tried flashing the Doom kernel when rooting, I don't know if I did it properly.
I've noticed in other threads that the Doom kernel is listed differently in the system settings.
I'd like to know if I do have to flash the stock kernel (unless I already have it) to test out the MHL adapter, which I still haven't managed getting it to work.
Any help/info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

yes, i have the same kernel (stock jetstream), but instead g01487c4 i have g4612ecf
i can only advice you few things:
at-first, check mhl on other device to be sure it works
at-second, try to use 5v htc charger (i think it may cause problems with mhl)
at-last, try to buy cheap 5$ mhl on ebay or any chinese web-sites (i'm waiting for such thing now)

Thanks for replying! I had given up hope.
I'll see what I can try about checking the MHL on another device.
As for the second advice, I've tried both chargers. They seem to send power fine, but MHL doesn't work.
And as for the 3rd, yeah, I guess I could try that.
Q: can I use CWM to backup the system, change the kernel, and eventually change back using the CWM if the stock kernel doesn't work either? Or would I have to go through the process of changing the kernel again?
Thanks for all the advice!

try stock rom or just stock kernel, if you are using custom kernel it may brings big changes to OS
i have received my 5 usd mhl and it works perfectly with stock kernel and doomlord kernel as well
but only one thing that killed me is that output resolution is just 720p
so, i have a question: what resolution does oem htc ext microusb mhl have?

when you connect it to the tv the resolution must appear in the corner.

Ah, OK. I won't know till it actually connects, then. All I get now is "no signal".
Will know by the end of the week, hopefully.
Well, I changed back to the original kernel, and still there's no signal when connecting to the TV. A friend of mine has an HTC One X, so I'll test it on her phone when we next meet up.
If that doesn't work either, then I'll have to get another MHL adapter, but as you can tell from my really slow follow-up-ing on this, I kinda lost interest by now. :S
Could someone with working HDMI output through the MHL adapter paste the contents of their build.prop file here, please?

The setup is a simple "Plug n Play" solution using the HTC AC M500 12pin MHL HDMI Adaptor, with a standard Type-A HDMI cable. No power source was required.
Make sure the TV (I used a RCA 42"HDTV) is properly configured (i.e. Source > HDMI) to receive the signal.
In terms of the reception, the output was measured at HD 1080p with awesome HD Sound.

USB OTG Cables

I just ordered my USB OTG Cable today. For those that don't know what it means, it stands for USB On-The-Go. Basically, it allows you to read files from a portable flash drive straight from your phone. This will only work with a compatable kernel and since we have an ICS Source the developers said it was already enabled within the kernel.
This will be my first time to have ever used one and I was just wondering the pros and cons of having something like this.
I need some feed back~~
well from my POV these are my pros and cons...
PROS:
Extra space (whatever you can get that hooks up to usb, 2tb!!)
CONS:
Lugging around the extra crap
You have a good con list ziggy46..lol
I was concerned about that as well. But I have a 500gb portable external hard drive and it has tons of crap that I can probably watch or listen to on my phone. I can't shove everything on my 32gb sdcard. My 1T sits on my desk for my wife's photography thing she does.
My friend has an OTG cable and he uses his usb mouse to control his phone.
It's pretty cool but really gimmicky.
Hmmm...interesting. Thanks for the tip
if your otg cable works out good for you let us know. i might buy one and get a 2tb usb hdd.
btw, if things are fomatted in NTFS you might need to make a script for them to mount to the phone...
HTC doesn't support USB OTG in general. It will require a kernel hack. It didn't work in GB. I am not sure about ICS.
From what kozmick mentioned in his kernel thread it was enabled in the kernel. Im hoping it works if not then I hope it works on the N7 or my wife's SGS2.

Normally USB otg won't work on an HTC device. According to faux its something about the USB stack.
Ok. So I FINALLY got my USB-OTG Cable and even with the enabeled kernel it does not work. Kinda bummed but the part was cheap so its not a major loss. It works on ky wife's SGS2 and I read that it will work on the Idolian tablet I just ordered so I'm cool with that. I'll try and sell the other 3 that I won't need.

It was able to power it just fine. I was just using a 2GB flash drive to test and you can see the led light come on. Not sure how well it could keep the charge up tho.

MHL not working - any ideas?

Hi guys, I got an oem MHL to hdmi cable from eBay, one specifically for the galaxy s3.
I received it today and while the phone seems to detect it's attached to a screen (audio set to hdmi out, landscape mode), the two devices I can connect it to both register nothing connected.
Is there something missing? The first device is a monitor using a hdmi to dvi adapter, the second is a 720p tv with hdmi in. The tv allows me to select the hdmi it's plugged into but says there's no signal.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you powering the device from another USB port.
All MHL adapters and cables for the Galaxy S2/3 need to be powered by an external USB port.

Ok it looks like it might be an issue with the ROM, using an AOKP build of JB 4.1.2
Apparently it doesn't support the TV out - shame, I thought I'd finally found the ROM I was going to stick with

If you get the cheap ones there's a huge chance of it not working just from looking through feedback on the Internet. Just spend a bit extra and get a samsung one.
Ive tried mine on many different roms and kernels and it always works.
P.s has anyone managed to get netflix in 16.9 widescreen using the mhl adaptor on jelly bean?:crying:
It's the samsungs 1, that i bought from my carrier. And adapter is fine since my friend got it work with note 2 :/

[Q] USB OTG for moto e

Suppose you have to download a big file using torrent or something else and you have a slow speed internet ( generally most of Indians, including me, have this situation :fingers-crossed: ). You want to download the file but don't want to keep you PC or laptop ON for whole night and for several days
I have an idea but need help of people to confirm this thing.
IDEA :::
Our phone has no OTG support, I agree. But can we somehow tweak the kernel and make it working just for powered Y OTG cable ??? POWERED USB cable can help us to connect pendrive or some other storage to our phone using a charger (any old usb charger)
power usb will connect to the charger for supply and otg will connect to the phone..... I am pretty sure about it. NOW THE SITUATION IS YOU HAVE A LOW POWERED TORRENTING MACHINE !!!! external drive absorb only 500mA*5volts = 2.5 watt . This means after 400 Hrs you get an electricity bill of 3-4 RS which is quite efficient.
Are u using this cable and is it working?

OTG on Moto E
I have found this thread which says OTG on MOTO E is possible, however the apk file is removed from the thread and I can't find the application name. Even if it is paid, I'd like to purchase it, so if you know which app is that, which would make OTG work on Moto E, please give me the name and I'll try to purchase it.
@naveenultimategamer What's the point in change the kernel for get through your example? You can just let your device in charge and after remove the SD card to transfer the file, or use a USB cable... Make things simple man...
