[Q] Music file transfer issue with new sd card - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda peeps
I recently bought a new 32gb Kingston, class 4 sd card for my SII (ics)
I put the card into my phone, connected my phone to my desktop through the usb, and no matter how many different ways i try to transfer my music files onto the card, it fails. I have tried connecting through the USB mass storage utilities option, i have tried through MTP (although this wasn't available as an option until i downloaded and installed Kies), and i have also tried through Kies.
With each option, the files will transfer up to a certain point - around 15 albums or so, then after that, the files either don't copy across at all, or when i do manage copy them, they are totally corrupted, and they sound like they are skipping almost how a cd would skip if it is scratched or something. The actual files are fine (checked on my desktop) and i have copied files across in the past using the same computer (different sd card - 16gb Sandisk), same usb cable (although i have tried using a different one just in case), ao i am at a bit of a loss as to what is happening?!
I may still be in the dark ages somewhat with my desktop as i am running XP, but i didn't think this would be a problem really if i was simply connecting with USB mass storage or MTP and just dragging and dropping files.
Any ideas? The last thing i can really think of is that it is a dodgy sd, but does anybody here have any idea of any other issues which might be the problem?
Many thanks in advance!
Will

Sounds like the card to me. A way to check would be to find a PC (or buy a cheap one; I can pick one up for <$20 here) with a card reader & see what happens trying to transfer files that way & then putting card in the phone.
If that works OK, you could always try a full format of the card in Windows as well & then try transferring files again.

thanks for the reply, and yeah, i suspect it most likely is the card - the last thing to try really is what you suggest - trying to copy the files through a card reader in a laptop. I'll also try formatting in the pc as previously i've been formatting in my SII
One thing that was puzzling me a tad though and i did find a bit curious was that until i installed Kies onto my desktop, the option of MTP was not there. When the 'action' dialogue box popped up on screen, there was no option to open the folder to explore - it just gave me options to either transfer files using WMP or Photoshop. Similarly, when i opened up 'My computer', it was not showing as an external drive.
This was leading me to think that maybe there was some kind of conflict that i was unaware of using an old XP
Thanks again!

Installing Kies would have installed up to date drivers which probably activates MTP; Samsung may not have supplied M$ up to date drivers for XP directly/to include in Windoze Update maybe ?
No worries Hope you get it sorted, if it's still giving you dramas after trying those couple of things, post to this thread & I'm sure someone will have other ideas to try.
Edit - Had a lightbulb moment. If your phone is rooted/you're running a kernel with CWRecovery, you could try formatting the external SD card from there. One thing to be aware of if you try this, make sure you know the mount points for external/internal SD for the particular rom you're using; make sure internal is internal/external is external or whether they're swapped around like they used to be (might still be on some roms ?) on some roms. Last thing you want to do is accidentally format your internal SD

Cheers! And yeah i'm sure i'll be back later if things don't work!
Phone isn't rooted - just got stock 4.0.4 running, and all i've tried is formatting it through the phone so far - I'll try through a laptop later

Just an update on this.
Seems like it was a card issue. Put the card into a laptop, formatted, opened it up, tried to copy files over & the same thing happened. It told me all files copied successfully, but when i put it into my phone, the majority of the files were missing.
Thanks for the help!

Can't use 32GB Micro SDHC card

I am hoping someone could answer this question since nobody has never asked before. I bought a Kingston 32GB micro sdhc card. The model number is SD-C02G made in Taiwan. When I popped in the card into the tablet, it says the card is damaged, formatting is needed. I tried to click on the format button and nothing happened. But, when I test the card on other devices (cell phone & camera & computer), it had no problems at all. No formatting or anything was needed. Does anyone have the same problem or know how to get this fixed?
I am running vegan tab 5.1.1 by the way.
Thanks a lot!

did you try to format using ur PC in Fat32?
nvm...problem is fixed now. i found out that the memory card was loose probably. Didnt come into full contact with all the pins. Thank you for your reply anyway.
I had the same issue with my new 16 gig card, I let the gtab format it, then rebooted with the card installed, have had no issues for 2 weeks now, card is full of movies and everything works like a champ!
Ok got my sandisk 32GB card from Amazon. I put it in the Gtab but couldn't format the card. Put it on my mac and saw it wasn't formatted at all so I formatted it. No go on the Gtab again... said I need to reformat but the Gtab wouldn't do it. I tried windows to format Fat32 with fast off but kept crashing during format (only showed 27Gb BTW). Searched around and came across windows based program from Panasonic/official micro sd standards site (sdformatter V3). Ran this program selecting all wipe options. The program took 5 days! Successfully finished this morning with correct fat32 so I thought all was well connected to both mac and windows I cant get files to transfer onto the card. I set up a couple media folders but once I start the file transfer it will give me error: improper disk ejection and still show folders. On windows I can get a few files to the card before I get ether "file is corrupt" or I can see that the transfer has stopped and I can see its lost connection between windows and SD card. Did I get a bad card or is there anything I can try here? BTW after that long and painful format Gtab could recognize the SD and I could see the folders I was able to make on the card.
Update:
Now a pop up window for fixing the card has come up on windows once I connected the card reader. I checked the 2 options "Auto fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" has been running for 10min and progress bar is half way. hope it fix my problem!
kraftweksfit,
The 32 gig cards have worked back to the beginning as far as I have ever heard.
My opinion, but if it were my card I would return it and ask for one that is not defective.
When you get a good one, make sure it is formatted (on your PC) to FAT32. I also
have found the USB port and card slot are not plug and play like Windows. I
always change them while the G-Tablet is off to all it to search and find them on startup.

Thanks for that info. I had to shut everything down as my workday was over so now after those 2 windows fixes ran I'm just getting everything back up now at home. So Ive got multiple 2GB movie files to transfer. I still get the random "explorer is not responding" freeze issue on file transfers though. Should I just keep reformatting the card to see if it will fix the issue? Or give up on it and wipe and send it back?
trojan, I've got a question. have you tried putting more than 2 gb on the card? I can't seem to find a 32 gb version of the SD-C02G. Also have you done any speed tests on it?

That Panasonic tool is a favorite over in headfi-org - I've been using the older version for years and it actually works on a Windows VM. We used to use it on our Cowon D2 to ensure that our SDHC cards were being read properly.
For v2, if you do a quick format it should not take that long.

So you think the card just needs to be reformatted again? If so I'll try the quick option. When that program took so long I thought for sure something was wrong. BTW all references to windows are on VM on my mac as well.
Should I be worried that my Gtab can't format the card? I'm on Vegan 5.1
thanks
UPDATE:So I ran the quick option of SDformat V3 with no problems, was able to transfer one 2GB movie no problem. I went to try to move more files and instantly the progress bar for transfer does not move, "more details" tab shows est. time calculating... so my guess is windows explorer lost connection with the card. also every time I eject the card/reader windows want to fix errors which I've already run so I think this card is dead!
Bad SanDisk is on it way back, after browsing amazon I came across a Kingston 32GB micro sd with adapter class 4 for 39.99 + shipping. I went for the store front offering for 41.99 + 9.98 shipping. Best price I can find for a quality card if anyone is looking for one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QQKI0G

[Q] Dell Streak radomly deletes files after USB connection

I recently upgraded my memory card on my Streak to a 32gb class 10.
When trying to put files (pictures and videos) on the card via the USB cable the files appear to have been copied okay, but when trying to access the files on the Streak they are either missing or corrupted.
I reformatted the card in the Streak and tried again. This had the same effect.
I transferred some files via skydrive and they worked fine. But the next time a accessed the card via USB, the files disappeared again, even though I didn't access the folder in question.
This is the second card I have tried, so I assume that the card is not the problem.
I'm running stock 2.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What OS are you using?
Even though the file copy may appear complete it may not be. Make sure you use whatever steps are appropriate for your OS to eject or unmount the SD card after copying.
Using Win 7 x64...
I'll have another go and let you know.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I've tried again making sure that I've selected Turn off USB storage from the handset and safely eject from the PC. It still happens.
The strange thing is that it even affects folders that I didn't access whilst connected to the PC (it either empties or deletes the folders).
Totally stumped on this. Could it be a problem with the card? If so, has anyone used a 32gb card that works that they can recommend?
You have tried at least 2 cards, but have you tried a different PC. Is it possible you may have "something" running on the PC causing this.

Make sure that you do those in the correct order. Safely remove from PC first, then turn off USB storage on the phone.
If you can read the card with no problems make a backup and then format the card in the phone. I have seen a lot of cases (and not just with Streaks) where issues were caused by using a card that had not been formatted while in the phone.
Where did you buy the card from? I ask because this sounds a lot like the symptoms you see with faked cards that are really much smaller than the 32GB they claim.

Hmm. I got it from Ebay. It does show as 31.2gb in windows.
This is the second card I've had from this supplier (I sent the first back because of the problems with the streak as listed above). As I had the same probs with the 2nd card I assumed the device must be at fault.
Are you sure the card is legit? you should hook it up to a card reader and loading +20gb of data and seeing if it's good
I tried transferring a load of files to the card and it stopped after about 3gb. Some of the folders were empty.
I tried reformatting in windows and noticed it was FAT32. The card will not format as NTFS.
I guess this means that the card is duff?
it definitely sounds like you got a fake, those are classic signs it's a fake

a couple of strange thing regarding my MicroSD card

Hi, I usually dont write, but I read a lot here.
about 2 weeks ago i bought my S3, and everything was great. about 2 days ago I bought a 32GB MicroSD card (Sandisk Ultra Mobile CL10)
and put it into the phone, when I try to connect it to the computer via the USB cable, the transfer rate is extremely slow!!!
It usually just freeze about the middle and just pop-out a message that "The File could not be copied", and its the same to every file I try (regardless the type/size etc).
the strange thing is that it does the same to the internal memory!
if I take out the the MicroSD and put it into a card-reader and into a the computer it works great and transfer rate is about 20Mb/s!
is there anything I can/should do?
I know that on my old Motorola I could plug it into the computer and the SD card was shown as a "Removable Disk" and I could just copy and paste, and the S3 is either shown by a Camera or a media device... is there a way to make it as a Removable Disk?
I'm with a stock rom is that's matter.
hope I could get your help.
Thanks.

Sound like a problem i had when i got my 32gb card. for me it turned out that i had to change the usb port as the one i was using decided to be a usb1.0 port, changed port, installed drivers for a different port and it fixed my issue, dunno if it will work for you but worth a try.
also try formatting your card.

I just tried on another computer, the problem didn't occur but the transfer rate is still VERY slow...
I format the card within the phone and when I looked on the properties of the MicroSD card, under File System is written "generic hierarchical" - is that normal? is there anyway i could format it to NTFS or even FAT32? the phone will still recogsize it if i do?

Thats what mine says too, not sure which format it uses by default.
I have heard that you can format to ntfs or fat32, but i havent tried it, too scared to damage it and loose 32gb from my phone accidently, lol (ive done this before. ) but search and see.

[Q] cm7 cannot save to internal sd

Hello. I.ve checked the first 40 pages of the forum and have seen this posted before but with no answers. I.m running cm7 on a 16gb NT, and for the most part, everything is good. However, I want to use my internal space to save things to, like pictures from the internet, etc. Whenever I try now, a message says I Don.t have an external SD card installed, which I Don.t, but I have almost 8 gigs of internal space I.d like to use. Also the media player installed with cm7 says no SD card installed. Surely there must be a way to use the internal space and have the apps detect it as an SD card?
There is a way, I haven't tried myself, that involves swapping internal with external memory, by tweaking build.prop and vold.fstab files. This makes the internal memory external, though the label remains as the original.
And you don't have 8gb internal memory (unless you reparationed it) but 1gb only.
when i go to storage in settings, it says i have 5.5G of internal storage and 7.45G of additional storage under /mnt/media. i haven't repartitioned anything myself, but this was a pre-owned nook, so maybe the original owner did. also, i do have the "internal storage" box checked in cyanogen settings... Any ideas? Or do you have more info on the file editing?

^^ link above is the method but for cm10 where storage is mounted as storage 0 and 1, in cm7 its emmc and SD card (or something like that)
So does anyone have the exact commands to use for cm7 in the fstab? Also, will I be adding these lines or replacing ones already there?
Does anyone have an answer for this? Its hard to believe all the NT owners out there are contented letting all that space go to waste...
Well, I'm not letting any space go to waste!. I put lots of stuff in my internal storage. Either I put it there when transferring from PC, or I transfer files between sd-card and internal.
But that's beside the point.
Check over in the Nook Color section and maybe you can find useful info there. I know it was discussed and solved for CM7 on the Color. Shouldn't be too different for the Tablet. One would think... and possibly be terribly wrong...
( I don't think there is a huge interest in CM7 for the NT any more.)
Has this issue been addressed in cm10? Does the nook recognize the extra internal space as a place to save stuff to from the internet and read files from like with media players? Sorry for being meticulous about this, but I bricked my other NT messing around trying to access this space (I unmounted and formatted it and believe I wiped my internal partitions) and don't want to mess up this one as well. Thanks for any help...
There doesn't seem to be an easy fix for this in CM10. However much I would appreciate having it done I don't think it's worth taking risks messing with things I don't understand, so I pop in an sd-card to keep the apps that want it happy. (Those of you that have more of a clue might think differently though.)
Things I want to stay on the Nook I put internally like I said in my previous post. Pictures, some books, soma PDF magazines, a couple of film clips... All in my internal "MyFiles" folder.
And how do you open those files, with a file explorer or with actual programs? Because like I said right now, even if I did have music stored in that internal space, the media player is telling me there is no sd card inserted and therefore won't even search for any music files.
I open from a file explorer and it asks me what I want to use and if to set to default the first time.
Edit: And also (I had to go check this to be sure I wasn't remembering wrong), once opened with Gallery the app seems to "remember" that there are albums in eMMc as well and they show up wvwn with sd removed. This is in CM10, mind you, if it acts differently in CM7 I wouldn't know.
More edit: I now checked on the kids' Nook Color running CM7, and both QuickPic and MX Player allow you through settings to decide where it looks for media. I still prefer going through a file explorer though.
and now we come to another issue... i cannot for the life of me get my computer to recognize my nook properly. i was going to add the files from my computer and then locate them with a file explorer, but when i connect it, either through the regular cm7 interface or through CWM, the computer cannot access the internal drives. it sees the nook, because 2 more drives open up, but i don't think i have the correct drivers, because it doesn't show up in ADB either. when i do adb devices, it comes up blank. the driver now lists the nook as Android ADB interface, don't know if thats correct or not, but doesn anyone have the proper windows 7, 64 bit drivers for this? nothing i've tried can gain access to those drives, or having the nook come up in adb...
Is this the first time you try to transfer files from PC to Nook? Has it been working before? Just to know if something has suddenly gone wrong .
You should get a prompt at the Nook telling you to enable USB storage or something like that. You probably need to go to settings and enable USB debugging or somethig similar as well.
Edit: I have never ever used ADB, so I have no clue how to fix things there!! I just use regular Windows File Explorer.

Are you running cm7 alpha? I think there was this problem in that but was fixed in beta
yes this is my first time trying to transfer files from the PC to the Nook, I installed cm7 as soon as I got it (which was this xmas). I don't have my computer on right now, but I'm 99% sure when I unzipped the release it said beta. Team-B version. nothing ever pops up on the Nook or the computer screen when I plug it in, I can only see the drives that get added to my computer, but can't access them.
After plugging to PC via USB you should get prompt on tablets notification bar. Did you get that?
Sent from my ST21a
This is from the Nook Color section, but it shouldn't be too different for the Tablet. Post 2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760487
ok i see the notification on the bar and it says usb debugging connected. when i click on it, it brings me to the settings mentioned in that other thread that asawi linked, but the android debugging mode is already checked. i followed that other thread and it turns out that guys cable was bad, so i tried the other cable i had that came with my other NT and still no luck. i doubt both cables i got could be bad... any other ideas?
Edit: ok queer. i restarted the nook while the cable was plugged in, and then i did get the usb storage connection option. however, after i hit connect, i don't see the drives in my computer. so i updated the driver automatically, and it went from android phone back to usb composite device. then i the drives popped up in my computer, but i still can't connect to them. i tried adb throughout all these options and i didn't get the NT to show up in the devices list at all.
You don't get the " turn on USB Storage"? There's usually 2 notifications when connecting. The setting you mention and the "turn on USB storage"

[Q] HTC evo3d problems help

Hi everyone,
after 1 year expericing with evo 3d everything is ok,
but in the last month some problems are killing me.
1- when i put the usb connection to download image, after i get sd error and cant see any images from gallery. (files are visible with android assistan, visible after rebooting, tried different cables, different sd, the system doesnt sees anymore images of applications, maybe some refresh problem?)
2- when i turn off the screen and connected to wifi or datamobile, both turn off till i turn on the screen, its a very annoying problem...
3- also the music application cant find my mp3 folder with music.
4- when i open gmail at first it says "no data connection", even if i'm connected, and clicking refresh works. (but i have to click everytime!!!,,,,
5- today i got also a strange grey icon of the battery with an ? on it, first time ever seen it.
other miscellanea information:
the phone is all original, i'm using apex launcher instead of sense, there is a lot of free space on sd, the phone never fell on the floor, nor in the water. camera is working great and all other function, no lag in applications,,
i hope some of you great xda master can help me finding a solution,
thanks to all.

ps. does exist an application that cancel all unused application files in the sdcard? thanks again.
1 and 3 sound like a bad sd card or card reader in the phone. The rest sound like an OS bug, which a factory reset should hopefully clear up.

thanks for the answer,
i guess is the sd card, il try a factory reset. the new sd card that caused problem is a samsung 16 gb cas 6, i thoght it was good.
i mean wipe the garbage, like all those files left behind from applications uninstalled and no longer used.
thanks again.

Well, normally when you connect the USB cable and choose to connect the USB storage then the SD card becomes unavailable to the phone but the computer can then access it. Both the computer and the phone cannot access the SD card at the same time... I will spare you the technical reasons but you should know that this is normal. After you are done copying files with the computer then you must turn off this USB storage mode so the phone can access the SD card again and then it will see all your music and pictures again (all these are stored on your card by default).
This should all be fixed OK by a reboot of the phone though in any case. Are you sure you rebooted the phone completely? maybe you should try to remove the battery once?
If you've done all that then you can try to repair the SD card by taking it out of the phone and using micro sd to SDHC adapter and inserting it directly into a computer then using windows to run a chkdsk on it.
hi,
i've done all you said properly, you know the problem came out because there was a differente behavior than in the past.
i remove securely the phone from pc and then is not accessible,
i didn't tried to chdsk the sdcard i'll try, but it sounded strange to me because its brand new.
i also tried to contact htc , they said " try to reboot, or try to remove the battery and the sd and start the phone again, the problem wasnt gone.
thanks for the advice.

Well if it's just gotten corrupted then you can just reformat the sd card. You'll want to backup all your data first so if you can't do that from the USB connection to the PC then you'll need to insert it directly into a pc. Once you've formatted it you can put your backed up data back on the card and put it back in the phone and after a while it will find your mp3s again. If it's truly a bad sd card then the reformat won't help.
Do you have another sdcard? The one that came with the phone or any other? Try putting some mp3s and photos on it and then put that in your phone. If your phone recognizes the photos and mp3s then maybe your current sdcard is the problem. And can you tell the the format of your sdcard? Is it NTFS or exFAT or FAT32? If it is UHS-1 card there is a good chance that it is in exFAT. To make it work on Evo 3d, convert it to FAT32 .
