After reading over lots and lots of threads, I finally got up the courage to root my phone.

I flashed the "Kernel + Modem + Cache + Rooted UCLE5 System Package" using Odin, downloaded Mobile Odin, and then flashed the safe Siyah 4.3.3 kernel w/o mic swap to avoid bricking due to the eMMc bug. Everything seems to be working fine. I have Superuser, Mobile Odin, and CWM Recovery.
My question is what are my ROM choices and how do I go about installing them?
I'f I'm reading the instructions correctly in the thread with the rooting instructions, I only have the three options for kernels in that thread and I MUST use a w/o mic swap version.
On the Siyah thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592228, the only ROMs listed that work with w/o mic swap Siyah are Criskelo and UCLD3. Are these my only choices for ROM?
Are these the proper files for Criskelo?

I can't seem to find the files for UCLD3.
To be clear, I was coming from a stock i777 with stock ICS and UCLE5. I'm now running 4.0.3, I777UCLE5, 3.1.0-rc8-Siyah-v4.3.3-nomswap ([email protected]).

You can use any rom you want. It will come with its own kernel and overwrite the one you have

So this from the the first thread isn't true?
"You must use an ICS kernel, and it must work with Samsung firmware, and be the no-mic-swap version. If you install a Gingerbread kernel the phone will not boot."
Sorry, it's all a bit confusing to me.

Just do as Pirate says and you will be fine. Dont worry about the kernel because the rom you want will have the appropriate kernel packaged in

it means that if you use an ALTERNATE kernel, which a lot of people like to do, then you must abide by those guidelines. all roms come packaged with a 'recommended' kernel....just flash one and you will see.

How do I do an EFS backup? I have searched this, but haven't found anything specific to this phone. Just want to make sure I am doing it correctly.

Use any EFS Backup App
The next step is to do a FULL BACKUP. I did a backup in CWM Recovery. Does that work?

Good choice for a first ROM. When you get bored with that Shostock3 is really nice but wait until 1.5 comes out. It has some fixes that will polish it up nicely.

Would going to SHOStock3 require a wipe? I understand that upgrading to new versions of an existing ROM usually does not, but since this is a different ROM it seems like it would require the full wipe.
What is the easiest way to retain as many of my settings, etc... as possible when doing full wipes? I have Titanium Backup already. Is there another program that will help me retain more?

Yes on the full wipe before flashing the new ROM.
What else are u trying to retain besides apps and their data? If that's all TiBu is fine

It would be nice if I didn't have setup e-mail everytime, but if I can keep my apps and their data with TiBu, that should be fine.

Once you get accustomed to it, flashing with a full wipe isn't too bad. Make a nandroid backup in case you decide to go back. And I would recommend you buy the full version of titanium back up to get the batch features, and support the developer. It is probably the most important app for those that flash regularly.
I can fully wipe and flash and have everything back up and running the exact same way it was in like 10 minutes. But I like the chance to start fresh

Ok. So here's the deal. I downloaded and installed a ROM that gave me an ICS look a like. I flashed the ROM and when i booted up, i was greeted with a message telling me my status bar wasnt functioning. I'm not looking to fix this, i'm looking to get my old stuff back. I have everything i had backed up in Titanium backup and on my external SD card. I went to restore and it just started loading my old stuff back onto the phone with the theme still there. I tried a factory reset, but it's still there... I want this corruptive theme gone. It's this one:

Personally I would flash ShoStock (if you want that theme and a better rom) OR try flashing UCCK6 on top of what you have.
Themes you find in that section are mostly meant for custom Roms, not official AT&T.

And as LilChris already said you need to do a lot more reading, take the time to understand what your doing before flashing things. The theme is not meant for stock.
As for the list of roms....you download the one you want, if the theme is your main concern then download ShoStock. If not, then pick one you like.

I would suggest installing ShoStock since its a decent ROM based on stock. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache before flashing. It can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353513
Nandroid, nandroid, NANDROID!!!
Next time you have a working phone, do a nandroid backup. Then if you screw things up but can still get to recovery, you can always go back to your happy place.

1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.

Is there a relation between which ROM will work with which Kernel, I may be wrong but I got the impression, depending on which ROM you are putting, you should have a kernel that supports it.
Also it seems like, ShoStock has its own variation of entropy, named cherry picker.

Agree with matts post just like to add that you can get the free mobile odin here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 to flash the kernel so you dont spend any money. download file, extract, move apk to sdcard, use root or file explorer locate and run the apk. follow instructions on flashing a kernel

Sometimes there is, but it seems like most of the ICS kernels are interchangeable. Just try out each kernel for a few days...once you have CWM, switching kernels is no big deal. When switching kernels, though, it's always wise to flash jivy's Kernel Cleaning Script just before flashing a new kernel.
Can you use CWM to flash kernels as well ? I thought they always have to be done using ODIN.
May be I underestimated CWM, I thought it was for ROMs and zips only.

u can use mobile odin or cwm but its just a matter of preference you just had to use mobile odin at first to acquire a cwm enabled kernel but pretty much you can flash everything in cwm as long as its specified to be cwm flashable zip kernels roms and modems and such
edit: the free mobile odin only lets you flash kernels btw its the premium version that lets you do everything without going to recovery

You don't seem to have a firm grasp on all this. Maybe you should do some more reading before going further...
Anyway, here's a brief explanation:
A kernel is the underlying core of the operating system; it is how the OS interacts with the hardware.
A rom (the proper term is actually firmware, but nobody uses it) is basically the whole user interface; it's the part of the OS you see. When you flash a rom, you're flashing everything, including a kernel.
Like I said before, you never want to flash a custom kernel using Odin. Doing so will trip the phone's flash counter, and this will show up if you ever have to take the phone in for warranty stuff.
The reason it's ok to use Odin to flash the stock with root package is that it comes with the stock kernel, not a custom one. Basically, once you're rooted, you shouldn't touch Odin again unless its to recover from a brick. Basically everything else can be done in CWM.

Yeah no problem. I would suggest that you wait a while before doing this. Read through all the stickies and guides to can find, and get more familiar with everything. Then after a couple days, go for it.

So I just need to go threw the root process, make a back up, and when I flash the ics ROM I choose, my wifi will be back?? You don't need any more of a guide than that. Don't worry about breaking wifi, that isn't a problem on any of the popular roms.
If you want a Samsung based ICS rom that works really well, I suggest ShoStock2. If you want an AOSP based rom, most people suggest AOKP. I haven't tried it personally.

You're wifi won't go away in the first place.
I just successfully rooted my phone using the DooMLoRD method. I wan't to use a Jellybean custom rom(probably aokp). What kernel do I need? I have a Galaxy S2 with version 2.3.4 and gingerbread.uckh7.
You need one with cwm baked in. It's that simple. The rom you select will flash the recommended kernel

These are really basic and common questions that you are asking and can be easily found by searching. I'm just giving you a fair warning, because you will be flamed by others for not searching.
Creating backups via CWM is not a requirement to flash anything. It is highly recommended that you do create backups though (especially if you're new to this), in case something goes wrong while flashing stuff.

Sorry if the Answer was staring me in my face but I'm not sure about upgrading to the CyanogenMod because of the superbricking I might get..
If any help can be given as to whether I am safe to do it, it will be much appreciated, My android version is 4.0.4, Build number imm76D.XWLPT.
I have just rooted it with XWLPW-ROOT-CWM6, and It seems to have rooted fine.
Will be much appreciated if I can get any help as to whether I can Flash it with CyanogenMod and everything will be fine..

EDIT: Yeah I just realized about having the Superbrick bug, I must have a kernel that is not liable to bricking, I rooted it with PhilZ touch 3 and when I go into recovery mode it says CWM Base version: 6.0.1.8 at the bottom, Am I safe from the bug?
You're safe as long as you don't perform a wipe from stock recovery in 4.0.4 (and not all phones have an insane chip). So yes, you can flash CM.

I highly recommend you read the discussion thread for the version of CM you're wanting to try in General section. So you can get a handle on other people's experiences with it, bugs/flaws/annoyances/features/etc. I never flash a rom without reading the first 10 pages of those threads & the last two weeks or so worth of posts so I know what I'm in for.
I agree. And you always have to perform a full wipe if you change firmware.

yes thank you I will, but do I wipe my phone before I install CM? or..? during it..? I'm scared of this superbricking ^-^, I have flashed my GS1 before with no problems, but problems arose and I've been out of the game for a while, and have forgotten phones and roms etc for quite a bit ^-^

I assume you've read guides about how to flash a rom? Copy the zip-file to your phone, back up, wipe and flash.
You don't have to be scared of this superbrick bug because you're already running a custom kernel.

I assume you've read guides about how to flash a rom? Copy the zip-file to your phone, back up, wipe and flash.
You don't have to be scared of this superbrick bug because you're already running a custom kernel.

Well, I was trying to root my phone so I don't think so, now that I think of it no, its only root and clockwork recovery mode thingymajig because file size only 7mb so if it was only root, my build number and everything is as same as before ^-^,
That's what I am so confuzzled about, I need to downgrade to a custom rom that must come with a custom kernel right to be able to upgrade to cyanogen right...? otherwise ill brick it?
No. Make sure you flash a custom kernel (for example Siyah) with Odin. Then there's no need to flash other firmware first before upgrading. Just wipe your device in CWM (after the back up), and flash the rom you want.

Thanks, thing is a lot of things are outdated like the guides, do you know if I can use the latest odin which is out that apparently is for the S3? I've spent two days trying to do research on this and im failing quite badly :'(

Make sure you have kies installed or at least the drivers.
Reboot into download mode
Run ODIN 1.85
Flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via PDA section
Boot into recovery run backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash CM zip file.

Btw, if you have any apps/appdata you need to restore after wipe you can restore them from your nandroid backup using appextractor.

I'd recommend that you pick your custom firmware from the xda developers SGH-I777 Android Development or Ported Development forums. Look for one that is currently supported by the developer, if possible. This phone is getting a little older and some of the developers have moved on to other phones.
You can use Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin pro to install a custom kernel. You should choose a custom kernel that matches your version of stock. What's on the phone now?

I can easily second this. I average about 13 hrs with less than half of that in screen on time. With medium usage my battery lasts almost 24 hrs.

With this official stock, you should use AJK v4.9 NoSwap to get CWM recovery so you can flash the firmware of your choice.
I've only been using SHOstock3 since forever, so I can't make any comment about the other firmware you mentioned. As I said before, it's best to choose a firmware that is still supported by the developer. SHOstock3 is, and several others are as well. Look in the development forum for threads that are active, then read the threads to see what's going on with them, and how users like them, etc.

You said the phone is already rooted. The answer is in post #2...
Install Mobile Odin Lite from here, or Mobile Odin Pro from the play store, on your phone. Download the zip file from the AJK thread, open it and extract the boot.img. Transfer the boot.img to your phone via usb or whatever file transfer you use. Then use Mobile Odin to install the kernel. Now you have CWM recovery so you can flash the firmware of your choice. Flashing the kernel this way does not flash the key layout, so see this post if you intend to keep stock for a while.

I've never flashed anything (kernal/rom/modem/etc), but I know that I need to start by getting a modified kernal that has CWM recovery to do pretty much any system mods to my i777.
My 1st question has been, which kernal? AJK, Jeboo, others? Again thanks for a recommendation CnC.
Does flashing a new kernal delete any system/user/app data? That is my second question. If so, what method should be utilized to back up, other than storing data on another storage device.

You can flash the AJK kernel with Mobile Odin without needing to wipe data. Your system and installed applications will not be affected.
However, when you decide to flash a custom firmware, you will need to perform a wipe data/factory reset. You should always do this when changing base. You can use Titanium Backup to retain installed applications and their data, but never install any system data with TiBu. Titanium Backup is something people who customize their phones use almost universally. If you plan to flash firmware frequently, you should pay for the Pro version so that you can have batch restore, and some other nice features.

Hmm, just curious, but I don't see an option in TiBu to backup apps and their data (not system data).

Then you're not looking in the right place: Under batch operations (little square icon at the top right with a check mark), Backup, backup user apps.
It's there in both the paid and free version.

That only backs up the app, not the data and the app, IIRC.
Best thing to do is to try all until you find one you like. If you're like me you'll love all of them.
