4g keeps dropping out while tethering - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is anyone having an issue with their data keep droping out while tethering. I am rooted on jelly beans build 1 - beanstown 106 rom. I wanna say that this happened once I rooted. Before installing a rom I tried foxfi and it conected for awhile then the 4g and data would drop out causing me to reset. Once I turn tethering off then on it works again for awhile. I thought it might have been foxfi so I installed the custom rom beans and am currently able to use the phones wifi tethering app but the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

Unroot and b return to Vzw. You got a bad phone. My Galaxy nexi(had 5 of them or so) did this until I got a good phone.

So urs would actually tether for a bit then just drop out?
Theres got to be more to it then just bad hardware cause the 4g and wifi never drops untill I tether for awhile. Then sometimes it wont do it for hours...

I think it is the stock app. Mine does this sometimes, and so did my Stock Galaxy Nexus, but the Galaxy Nexus never did it when I was using ROMs... I haven't tried any ROMs other than stock or any non stock tethering apps on the Note II yet, but I don't think it is the phone.

Well thats a relief. Thanks. So should I flash another custom rom?

Same issue. Stays tethered but 4g drops on and off after 3 minutes of activity

Same problem here. Must be the app.

Sure enough the native hotspot app is a POS and causes LTE to intermittently drop. Now have to resort to rooting and installing wireless tether.

You don't need to root to solve this. You can download Portable wifi Hotspot from the Market for free. It works great.

Root was a piece of cake with Chainfire's Exynos root exploit apk. And, as others have mentioned TrevE wireless tether is working much better than the native Verizon hotspot which was experiencing intermittent LTE disconnects, slow data throughput and connectivity issues with one of my older devices. Ran overnight without any LTE disconnects so far.

I've tried barnacle and wifi tether both do the same...will try some others. Went to beans' build 3 not doing it so far. Maybe something got fixed in the update. Am using phones native tether setting/app fyi.
Thinking of going to the clean rom 4.1.2.
Has anyone had tether problems with this rom? Specifically with 4g dropping out?

I didn't read this whole thread but if your 4g is dropping out its because your using the stock tethering and its not been hacked this is normal for it to drop out constantly and very annoying like. My s3 does it to. Use WiFi tether treve mod and again I didn't read this whole thread so if it has already been said just ignore my comment. Good luck. If you don't know what treve mod is I can't remember if its built into aroma with duild 3 or not but if its not and can't figure it out. Step over to the Verizon s3 section find treve mod and set up your note 2 the same way they say to set up the s3 and you'll be good to go. Again if this had been said ignore me. I'm bored. Hope it helps someone.

I pay for the unlimited hotspot feature from Verizon, and I often have the same issue on my stock, unrooted Note 2. It doesn't happen all of the time, but there periods where it constantly cuts in and out, especially when connected to a PC. It was also a problem on my Galaxy S3, RAZR MAXX, and Galaxy Nexus.
If you search around online, you'll see that people using the stock mobile hotspot app have been having the same issue for years.

Stock hotspot app AND Trev-E wireless tether does this to me constantly so it's got to be something else.... Its strange because some times it won't do it and then there's times where i'm dead in the water without the ability to tether. Yes I pay for tethering (plan).
My previous Galaxy S3 did the same crap to me as well... Thinking its a Samsung thing.. modem bug/kernel bug probably.
Anybody find any fixes/solutions?

Mine has done it periodically since I got the phone. Both stock and various versions of beans and clean rom. I just restart the phone and device connecting and it takes care of it. Happens maybe 1 out of 100 times.
A contact at Verizon says he sees people complaining about it sometimes and another one at sprint says the same thing.

Tether your Touchpad

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

It works through the ROM without any extra Apps. Just turn it on through the Wifi menu, or use the toggle from the pull down menu.
You'll get the red Verizon wifi icon in your task bar, but as long as you don't get a message to sign up for the wifi plan, you're good to go.
and if you get the subscription notification, just download portable wifi hotspot from playstore and that app will bypass it.
Gnome is correct. No apps needed with Beans ROMs.

To get the best results I have used the TrevE mod wifi tether app which can also be installed via beans rom... I find that I get FULL download and upload bandwidth from Verizon versus the stock app where I only get about 5-10mbps down and about 5mbps upload... You do have to have the correct settings though. The settings can be found in Bean's rom thread and it has been working great for me with no disconnects and about double the speed of the stock app! :good:

seriously lets not split hairs...you know what i meant. im saying unlimited data users can not just open the stock hotspot app and tether. a toggle or 2nd party app is required.
I am thinking about bucking up and buying one of these full price because I don't want to loose unlimited data. WiFi tether is my biggest need for free of course. On my droid x I use WiFi tether beta works like a top is this possible on rooted stock or is via custom ROM needed? Considering the 750$ I want to get the best bang for my buck any input is appreciated thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with that app. But like you, I use WiFi tether all the time, with an unlimited plan. "Portable WiFi Hotspot" works great, with stock and rooted as well. Available from the Market, and free to boot.
Thank you yeah I have been digging around and from what I read if you get a subsidized phone that the take your grandfathering that's why I think I will have to buy it outright at full price it sucks but I can burn through 5 gigs a week between hulu and Netflix tethering 2 other devices so a tiered data plan would kill me.
Don't waste your time with native Verizon hotspot app.

[Q] Connecting to another phone's BT internet share

This isn't a How do I connect my pc to my Thunderbolt question.
I recently acquired a used Thunderbolt from my Sister. I only plan to use the phone for music and such, but want internet access on it. My current phone is the Galaxy Note from ATT running CM 10.1. I have already paired the two phones and enabled internet sharing to the Thunderbolt from my Note. On the Thunderbolt, I am using the Official ICS Debloated ROM, and the phone is rooted etc.
My question is, how do I get the Thunderbolt to use bluetooth as it's internet connection? When I click on the settings icon next to my paired Note from the Thunderbolt BT menu, I don't get the "Use for Internet access" option.
I know it's a weird case, but if anyone has any tips or even another rom I can flash that would let me do this I am all for it.
I don't think the bolt can do it that way. Why dont you simply tether from your note to the bolt? It's a faster connection that way.

You can share it from your note to the bolt using an app called wireless tether.... That is if your note is rooted. Like I said before. I don't think the bolt can accept internet from another device over Bluetooth.

It doesn't require root BUT Verizon has been known to charge around 8 dollars a month to activate the functionality.

Wifi Tether works great for me and lets me see how much data I'm actually burning through. I'm using the one w/ the Synergy ROM, TrevE Mod.
The built in tethering only works if you are on a share data plan. If you are on an unlimited, you can't use it without paying extra. However FoxFi works WITHOUT root on the S4. I have yet to root because my wifi passwords all back up to google now, and I could care less about my angry birds data as I don't play it anymore. Tethering was really my only reason for rooting this and since foxfi works with no charge and no root, I haven't rooted. I don't use windows so until I NEED to root, I'm not going to try to get one.

either "one click tether" or "power toggles" or just any wireless tether widget works.
I am still on unlimited so the FCC ruled free tether does not apply, so when it prompts to go to Verizon or cancel just hit the home button and wireless tether stays on. :good: While its on you can still go into the settings and set up WEP security passwords.

[Q] Rooted Free Wifi Hotspot problems

I guess I can always flash back and update. I was just waiting for stock KitKat before I began looking for a rom simply for the S pen support. I use it all the time. This beast is my Daily driver and run my business from it and love the S pen.
So yea still no luck with my wifi tether router app. Guess I'm off to find a rom. Any suggestions? I'm a compatibility seeker. Heimdall FTW.

I have Easy Tether (paid) from a few years ago side-loaded on the N3. It's there "just in case" but I haven't needed it since flashing the Hot Spot mod. It works flawlessly and has been 100% consistent. Give it a try.
On a side note, I flashed the Hot Spot Mod while I was "Rooted Stock," had to do a factory reset (full wipe) followed by re-rooting and found that the Hot Spot mod was still intact and working flawlessly. No need to re-flash. Unfortunately, I did not check to see if the Hot Spot remained unlocked prior to re-rooting the device.
