[Q] GS3 crashed, won't restart, hangs on the Samsung splash screen - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I really hope you can help me.
A few days ago my phone tells me my memory is running low. I took a look, and low and behold there's feck all memory left. Which is odd because I'm careful about what I install. So, to begin with I download App2SD to move some applications to the SD card. App2SD then tells me that I have no external memory card, or it's virtual memory - which is odd, because all my music is on the SD card and I've no problem playing any of it. So, a few days later the phone tells me the SD card is no longer working, and I should try reformat it, today being the first day I've had some time free I decided to see if I could rescue some photos before formatting it, so I plugged in to my computer to browse the phone and see if I could see the SD card and photos.
After further inspection I discovered that the camera hasn't been saving pictures to the SD card as I'd originally set it to, so there's over 4GB of photos on the main memory, causing my low memory problems. So I started moving photos from the phone memory to the computer, copying and pasting onto my laptop, then deleting from the phone.
While doing this the phone kept crashing and restarting. Eventually (after many reboots) I managed to free about 1.5GB of the phone memory.
The phone crashed again. This time however, I get a message saying something along the lines of "cannot encrypt device, please reboot the phone".
Since then when I power up the phone I get "Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I tried rebooting but nothing happens, the phone hangs at the start up screen (after the Samsung logo, where the model number is displayed).
I've tried re-installing the firmware with Kies, which didn't work. Then I tried the emergency recovery, which also didn't work.
Has anyone got any advice??
I'm running the official Samsung binary.
I use nova launcher.

[Q] HELP (Resolved)

The other night I was trying to finish rooting my Nook, and think that I may have done something that I shouldn't have in the midst of my sleep deprived night. My best guess is that I did a format on the Nook instead of my sd card. I woke up and turned it on, and it asked for a factory reset, which I did. Then when trying to setup the device a message would pop up that said restart required your NOOK encountered a problem hat requires a system restart. Then when I hit okay another message shows that states the device could not restart. I managed to get to the main screen, but the messages still come up when turning the device off and then back on.
When I connect it to my pc, it no longer shows that the device or sd card that's inside are connected. One other thing I noticed is that when going into settings, under other storage available it says 0.00B free of 0.00B. I am able to connect to the internet and use it as well as the other apps loaded, but when trying to save anything off the internet a message shows that reads, an SD card is needed, even though there is an sd card in and the notifications shows SD card inserted. The SD card also shows when viewing my memory.
Can anyone help me with this issue?
Any help or ideas of what I could could possibly do to get this back to full functionality would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Weirdest SD Card Problem - Refuses to mount until inserted into PC

Hi,
I have Galaxy S3 running CM10.1 Siyah Kernel (problem has occured over several months of various CM10.1 nightlies) and I just cannot figure out why the following is happening. Please read the thread carefully because I've ensured that every sentence contains details which should be important clues to the root of the problem.
Sometimes following reboot, the phone completely refuses to read my memory card. In this state, the phone does not give me the Unmount option, but when I remove the memory card directly then it does show the 'Removed SD card in the' notification. Now if I insert it again, it shows 'Preparing SD card' in the notification and this notification doesnt go away by itself (which it should if the mount is successful) and the card does not mount. This situation does not change no matter how many times I repeat the process. After several attempts, I get the ongoing 'Damaged SD Card' notification. Dozens of reboots dont help either.
After loads of trial-and-error's, I have concluded that almost everytime that this issue has occurred was when the memory card was in-use (playing songs etc. Accessing anything off the memory card basically), although on rare occasions it has also occurred when no apps were in use at all. This gets me to believe that the software is failing to properly release some kind of lock on the memory card before rebooting.
Now the only way to get the memory card working again on the cellphone is to put it in my laptop memory card reader, and it can instantly read the memory card. Now if I safely remove the memory card from my laptop and insert it in the S3, then it always mounts on the first go. Now it will work perfectly again, until some completely random time (usually at least 1 week away) when it will start its problem again.
Also note that whenever this problem occurs, Developer Options does not load and crashes.
I want to reiterate that this is not repeatable each time. Even if the conditions are exactly the same (well, as far as I can see as an end user anyway), the problem will very likely just occur in just 1 out of the 50 attempts.
I have already got the memorycard+sim card slot replaced from samsung under warranty. I have also paid extra to buy the SanDisk memory card from SanDisk themselves based in the Czech Republic - so it is extremely unlikely that it is hardware fault.
Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Feel free to ask for any clarifications, I have tried to put as much information as possible.
Thanks
Make a nandroid, flash a stock rom and test again. Format the card using sd formatting tool first.
If that cures it then ask your kernel or rom chef for help.

Internal Storage Full After Factory Reset

Hi,
I have a Huawei Ascend G6 (U10) and rooted my device with TowelRoot 3.0
When you get a new phone it's custom to first fully charge your device and then let it fully deplete before fully charging it again to make sure you use the full capability of your device's battery. (during this time I rooted my device) Now, while it was at only 3% of battery I was playing a silly game, called Can KnockDown 3. While playing this game, my device turned off due to no battery. After it fully charged again, I tried to run the game again but it got stuck on the initialisation screen.
No big deal, I thought. So, I went on and just un-installed it and tried to re-install it. Problem is, I got Google Play error 492 when I tried to download/install the game once more. So I restarted my device, tried to un-install the Play Store and tried a hard reboot. None of those worked.
After some reading I got to know that I had to install an app called "ROM manager", boot into Recovery Mode and delete the Dalvik Cache (Which was said to be located in "Settings". Now, I don't know much about phones, nor Android. So that proved quite difficult. I went into Recovery Mode but was unable to find the "Settings" tab. So, I wiped Cache and the other setting. Can't quite remember. When I rebooted it, the problem was STILL not solved.
Now, I never noticed the REAL problem because I had my external SD card mounted.
This morning, I wanted to change my profile picture on an app called What's App Messenger. It gave me the following error: "Failed to load image data, please try again later." That really bothered me and after a reboot the problem was still not solved. I quickly realised that all my pictures were on my external SD so I turned off my phone to take it out. Booted it without external SD. Tried to make a picture with my camera, but it said "Internal Sotrage full. Please insert an SD card." but when I went to my filemanager there was NOTING on my internal SD. No maps, nothing. However, in my settings it says that only 1.98 GB of the 4 GGB internal storage is used...
Could someone please help me with this?
try using DiskUsage app, it shows every folder in your phone and how much space they take, also if you have rooted your phone, it shows wich system folders take most of the space (logs and tmp folders, safe to erase)

I appreciate your reply, but I don't think that's the problem. I think my internal SD card is f***ed up now. I've tried wiping it all I want but to no avail. Probably something went wrong with rooting it, or installing ClockWorkMod or something. I don't know.
What I do know is that I need help!
Have you found a solution

Problems with USB file transfering.

Hey everyone.
I have been experiencing a huge problem for me, with my p760. I`m on latest PAC version, and about a week ago i had problems with UMS, while copying files from computer to my LG, suddenly the task froze, i couldn't turn off Mass Storage from phone either, so i just unplugged the device after aprox. 6 min of waiting. The result was in phone shutdown. I turnt back on, and tried once more, sadly the same happened, but this time i received a nice present of soft brick. I couldn't even turn my phone on in recovery (thanks to TWRP), i managed to flash CWM through fastboot, then made a factory reset, and phone booted up, but ever since the time, i am unable to copy files to SD card through UMS, and MTP doesn't work at all. So i'm stuck now. I want to reinstall phone, upgrade to new ROM, i know possibilities are just to download a new ROM through phone, but i like the PAC, so do you have any solution or tips to fixing this? Oh, also everytime i connect phone, it shows me that my SD card needs to be scanned for errors, i always skipped, 'til i tried, and no luck. 20min of waiting to tell me, it is all right with SD.
First use an external SD reader to scan for errors and eventually try substituting the SD to see if it's a phone or a SD problem. Second you can always flash a rom from internal SD!

[Q] my phone's internal memory has been set to "read-only"

This is happening to me. Any help on how to set interneal memory to read and write. i cannot save any file to my phone from any apps.
I'll apreciate your help.
"Let me first apologize for the length of this but hopefully someone will be able to help. I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 running 4.4.2. I recently attempted to use CMInstaller to load Cyanogenmod (I use otter1 on my Kindle and love Cyanogenmod and I really dislike Samsung's OS and bloatware) but it failed. It would get to the point of "Loading OS" and then the android picture on my phone was laying flat with a red triangle over its chest (I'm guessing that means error). CMInstaller then completed and said everything was successful. My S3 then gave me two yes/no questions but no matter what I answered, it eventually just returned to the stock Samsung OS with no root or superuser. From what I have been reading, this is due to Knox and I need to root my phone and remove Knox. I've found several helpful forums on xda-developers on rooting my phone and deleting Knox.
My issue though is that apparently somehow my phone's internal memory has been set to "read-only" or affected in some other way. The phone still works as a phone and it has allowed me to install apps and I can transfer files to and from both the internal memory and the SD card using my computer. But I've noticed that some apps are acting very strangely.
Amazon Kindle: will not download any books or register that I transferred ebooks to the Kindle folder (and yes, they are in the right folder and the right formats). When I attempt to download a book, the pull down menu for the phone gives me an error of "N/A - Download unsuccessful. Tap to try again." When I tap on that, it goes to a download screen that just sits there and does nothing. If I click on the book in the Kindle app it gives me an error of "Unable to Download. A network connection is required to download your Kindle title. Please connect to a network and try again." During these errors I have network connection (I am able to get online using the Dolphin browser) and have tried multiple different wifi networks and Sprint's network in many different geographical locations. I have tried using my wife's Amazon account on my phone with the exact same result.
Dolphin browser: Will not download anything to the internal memory (immediately results in a "Download unsuccessful") and fails to recognize my external SD card (when attempting to choose it as a download location it displays the message "Can't find file or directory. Please make sure your SD card is ready, and USB Mass Storage is turned off.") My phone is not connected to my computer during this.
Google Drive: Immediately fails to download any file.
doubleTwist: When attempting to set the music location to internal memory, doubleTwist says "It appears that your device has been set to read-only." Can access the SD card and play music found there.
All of the stock Samsung applications can access both internal memory and the SD card with no problem. The camera can save pictures to the internal memory and the SD card, the stock browser can save files with no problems, the voice recorder can record and save without issue and My Files can move, copy and delete files on both the SD card and the internal memory. It could argued that I just use Samsung's apps but I hate Samsung's apps and most of the time there are all hidden/disabled.
All of this started after CMInstaller failed. Is there any way to fix this? More importantly will this stop me from (or mess up) rooting my phone, obliterating Knox and loading Cyanogenmod? Part of me just wants to leave the phone as is since it still works (for the most part) but another, bigger part of me wants to remove Samsung's hold on my phone even more than before."
Hi,
I will have your thread moved to your device section so those that own your device can help.
Good luck!
Problably your problems are caused by CM-installer. Espec., because it tries to change recovery, too. Very comfortable, very fragile. I suggest to rebuild everything. You loose all your settings and data except those on extSdCard. Btw: there is no Knox on S3.
Save your data, as much as possible.
DownloadMode. Flash the newest firmware with Odin.
RecoveryMode. FactoryReset.
You should have a working system now. If yes:
DownloadMode. Root with cfAutoRoot and Odin.
Flash TWRP2.8.1.0 with Odin.
FullWipe. Flash any custom-rom, you want. FactoryReset.
