[Q] Strange green screen camera bug/crash? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've made this thread to mainly know if this could be a simple random software crash issue... What worries me most is if it could be the start of an hardware failure.
I have an S3 I9300 since October and there were 2 times where my back-facing camera seemed to crash into a green screen, both in apps.
1st crash happened in MixBooth last month, the camera preview screen was fully green. Exiting the program and opening the official camera app seemed to fix it.
2nd crash, today, happened in Barcode Scanner. The camera preview screen turned green, with some flickering lighter-green lines. It also completely froze the device and I had to force shutdown by holding the power button.
Has yet to happen in the camera app itself, but I'm worried if it's for certain an hardware issue related to internal connections or otherwise.
Unless these happen with software glitches/crashes as well? I found a person showcasing a similar green-screen issue on the S3 (can't post link so Google for "Android Camera Preview is incorrect on Samsung Galaxy S3"). It's not quite the same green pattern, though it seems a problem encountered while developing an app that uses the camera.
Many thanks for any answer, even if it's just an opinion or conjecture.

No, didn't install ExynosAbuse or anything that gains access to root.

Green Screen in camera
I have had the same issue happen to me a few minutes ago.
I was using the stock camera app and it just suddenly froze onto a green screen.
I have owned my galaxy s3 for less that 24 hours so I am hoping this isn't a recurring problem.
Have you figured out if it was just a software bug?

Not completely sure, but it has yet to happen again... I'd guess if it was hardware its frequency would increase...
Though I did find a thread from 2010 over at the androidforums in regards to a green camera crash on the Samsung Transform that would fix itself with a reboot (see "Support Camera problems?"), so I guess in that case it could be a software crash similar to the ones we just had.

Intresting. I suppose it is just software..
We will be getting a 4.1.2 update pretty soon and that should will iron out any small bugs such as the camera issue we are having.

got to solve it ... for while
Dear all,
I believe that got to fix this issue - had downloaded Ad Detector software from Google Play, and had noticed that there were 29 apps with AdMob plugin on it - had deleted some of the infected software and the camera is now working?
If you have free software installed in your mobile, try to delete it and check it if your mobile camera is working again ...

[Q] How to fix camera problem?

Since I updated OTA to 2.3.6 build 4.5.141, I have been experiencing a problem with the camera as it shows a black screen (both still and video) and crashes after that.
I am willing to root the phone and install flash a ROM if that could be helpful. I tried a factory reset, SD format/unmount, battery pull, reboot, and everything possible with an unrooted device.
Warranty period is over so I can't ask for a replacement.
Any help is appreciated.
Camera
I had similar problems with upgrading to ICS Roms.
I fixed the problems with installation of Videocam Illusion and ProCapture or FastBurst Camera. I don't know if it is suitable for your Rom.
The only problem I see now with these apps is that I can't open, let say, ProCapture or FastBurst and after any camera or camcorder apps. The only to get these apps to work is to reboot.
Not working
Thanks for your feedback.
But I tried installing all those apps but they all give the same problem (black screen, which later freezes). I tried changing the resolution of the camera and then the camera app did not open at all saying: camera unable to initialize.
Occasionally, it shows a large camera icon in front of the screen and then it just closes down saying 'Activity Camera (in application Camera) not responding.
I do still think it is a software (not a hardware) problem because the phone has not been exposed to any physical damage whatsoever and everything else works smoothly on it.
I am already considering getting a replacement camera but thought I'd exhaust all other options before doing so as it does take a while to get a replacement. Luckily, it is under warranty.
Thanks again.
Id you're looking for a good stock based rom id try nottachrix. I've been on it roughly 2 months no issues

[Q] Galaxy S3 'Camera stopped working' after Jellybean Update

Hi
Can anyone else run the stock Camera app after the Jellybean update?
There's a yellow box around the shutter and when I go to take a photo the application crashes.
Other camera apps work fine!

I've been using it, and it works fine with me. Do you have any apps that may affect the camera? And was it working fine with ICS?
No extra apps, yes it did work in ICS.
I'm hoping someone with a working camera in JB can dump the firmware for me

I updated Insert Coin Rom to 3.0 and my camera hasnt worked since. updated tuesday, and only went to use my camera yesterday and discovered it freezes on opening. flashlight toggle in my notifications bar also causes system UI to crash.
switched to Anonorom this morning, factory reset, restored apps + data from Titanium Pro, same thing. camera and flashlight both crash my system UI.
which sucks cause previous IC rom was great.
any help would be awesome. otherwise i guess i'm either flashing rom's or doing a full factory reset and restoring manually i guess..

Followed by flash stock firmware .

Also started having this issue last week, more than a month since I got my 4.1.2 OTA from T-mobile.
From what I experienced, both incidents when I was out, were in low light, and after I enabled low light mode within the camera controls.
There would be a freeze, then app crash returning to the homescreen.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on this, and I'd really like to know what is causing it.
I have a feeling it is a setting in the touchwiz camera... because other camera apps (vignette, eyeem) launch the camera fine and without issue.

I started getting the freeze issue a few weeks back. I removed the SD card and tried the phone without it and it was fine again. Wiped the SD card and put it back in and all is working again. Hope this helps some of you.

[Q] camera sometimes freeze

Hi folks,
I have a haipad i9300 mtk 6577 4 days ago the camera start to make trouble. Sometime just show black screen and after ask for a force close.
I tried to delete the old camera apk and installa brand new...I give to JB 4.2 camera a try to see if it works...nothing still the same. Black screen and after several touch ask for a force close. I guess is not an hardware problem because sometimes it works...what can I do?
I notice if I press several time and I force close then the camera app cannot connect to camera. This happen 4 or 5 times...then if I am very lucky the camera rebirth and start working again...It seems there is a kind of problem between the app camera and the camera hardware...because every camera app have the same issue, so maybe the problema is after...maybe some libs or something like that...any idea?
Odd update...I have a torchlight app with its widget. I notice the torchlight has the same issues of the camera. In fact it freezes and often I need to force close. The strange thing is if you turn on or turn off after few timers you can heard a kind of "click"...the same click you heard when you activate the camera...after that if you turn on the camera it is working. So I guess the torchlight and the camera are linked in some way. Of course I try to unistall the torchlight app...nothing the camera still not working.
Any ideas?
I'm not expect ,but
if something using start using camera (for example torch widget app) then other program cannot access to camera,so if program was not design for that case it will crash. (I know this as When I writing my app i spotted the same problem as You. ).
So i guess something using camera and that cause your problems.Try to find how many programs/services use camera and close all of them and then check/
That's my thought...in fact I'm pretty sure something is bothering the camera app...but...I did an hard reset, so a clean system, but the camera still freeze so I assume is not an application I installed. How can I check which application is accessing the camera?

[BUGS] - Nexus 10 - KRT160 (4.4)

* - Let's seperate out the bugs.
* - Stock only please. If you're running a custom ROM - DO NOT POST HERE.
* - This isn't a help thread about installing updates...
* - If you think you found a bug it is VITALLY important you list steps to reproduce the bug.. If others can't reproduce it.. It's not a bug.
* - Also do not report anything if you have GEL installed. GEL is not "stock" for the N10 and any problems are not KRT160 problems.
Bugs
-----------------------
Please star and confirm it there if you can to get this item noticed:
1. Nexus 10 - KRT160 - Homescreen not redrawing Google Search if you flick items off instead of dragging to remove
2. Settings force close if you have evernote installed and click on its icon in settings and clicking the Evernote account
I always wanted to reserve..
Bug #1 has also been confirmed on the Nexus 7 Original.

Confirmed..
Hey developers.. Would you consider this an Android problem or a developers app not compatible with 4.4 problem?
I would report this to the app developer. He will be able to file a more detailed bug report if not fix it himself
I cannot drag and drop app icon from App drawer to the Home screen. Every time I try this I just load the app. It doesn't matter for how long I'm holding the app icon. Maybe this is due to the low battery, which is doubtful. Reboot doesn't help. Please kindly let me know if I'm not the only one with such weirdness.
This is definitely some malfunction since per Android 4.4 User Guide (http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/android/android_ug_42/Android-Quick-Start-Guide.pdf):
To add an app icon to a Home screen:
1. Go to the Home screen where you want to place the app.
2. Touch theAll Apps icon.
3. Swipe from right to left, if necessary, to find the app you want.
4. Touch & hold the app until the Home screen appears, slide it into place, and lift your finger
Edit:
Found out that this only happens when the device is plugged with USB cable. Maybe this is a feature not a bug...

styckx,
Just a small suggestion for the bug list. Rather than have a raw URL link please make the subject title the URL link. For example the first bug:
Nexus 10 - KRT160 - Homescreen not redrawing Google Search if you flick items off instead of dragging to remove
In this way your list will be is easier to scan. Thanks for creating this thread.

Has anyone noticed that since the upgrade to 4.4 that your device is staying awake? Seems to be caused by Android system. It doesn't sleep anymore and it's draining my battery because of this. Anyone found out what the problem is? I read on another forum that it's being caused by the Google Keyboard that is shipped with 4.4, if I change the keyboard with the 1,2,3 layout, will this solve the battery drain issue? This is weird man......
Thanks for the replies!

Haven't had a look at battery stats or anything but I got over 6 hours screen on time yesterday, so I can't say i've got a problem with battery life
Here's a screenshot I made. To verify it, I disabled the keyboard for a moment, and indeed, the device went to sleep. I then re-enabled the keyboard and again the device won't sleep! Without use I lost 5% of my battery in just 30 minutes. Anyone knows how I can update the keyboard with the newest version?
I think I solved the problem. I turned off Hotword detection under Google Now settings, and then Voice. Seems to have done the trick! Now when the screen is switched off the device goes to sleep. This is weird though, it should switch off when the screen is off but it doesn't! So, I think this is a legitimate bug that needs fixing! Can someone give this a try and report back if this solution helped?

Camera bug after android 10 update?

Hi, i wanted to ask if anyone is having a similar bug like mine after getting the android 10 update (i am on europe rom).
What the problem is, every time i try to take a picture of something using the flashlight, and focusing on something, the picture comes out so dark. If i use the "torch" mode the pic comes out normal. I'll attach two pictures down below, one with the flashlight on (firing just when taking the pic) and one with the torch which is so much brighter and you can tell the difference.
It seems a timing error. Whether the flashlight flashes light before the picture is captured or after the picture is captured. Try using a different camera app or reset the phone.

Yeah i noticed that too, it only happens on the stock cam app. The flash seems to fire a bit early but i dunno if there's a fix for that or if i can replace my cam app with an older or newer cam so that bug can be fixed
I updated to the last available version with android 10 (europe), the stock app with automatic flash works as expected.
But I use usually the open source camera -> open camera.
Maybe reset the camera app or try open camera ?
I've been having camera issues lately after the update too mine are a little worse though. The quality has reduced severely and it seems worse with hdr on.

So apparently it's not just me, have you tried doing a factory reset after the update? I plan to do that but I'm so lazy and i dunno if it's even gonna work ? so for now our chance is just wait for miui 12 maybe the new cam app will get it all fixed

I have not updated yet. Reason:
I installed orangefox recovery and removed some system apps. And now when I receive update, the update file downloads but does not install. I may flash fastboot rom, but I am still considering to continue using unbloated MIUI 11.
Anyway, if it is a common problem it will be fixed very soon. Because when it is common a large group of device is affected. So a fix update will/may release fast. I remember xperia p had same problem. It was fixed by an update.
Oh i really hope so, this is really annoying anyways

Other than the camera bug, I'm pleased with the new update. My phone does seem to perform a little better than before.
