Gaming on my TV - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

What apps/equipment etc do I need to play games on my Note on my TV and use the PS3 controller as the controller?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

You need an MHL Adapter and an HDMI cable to view your device on your TV. The MHL Adapter needs to be compatible with your device. You can get one cheap on Ebay but add the name of your device in the search kind of like this MHL ADAPTER GALAXY NOTE. To use the PS3 controller you will need a real Sixaxis controller not a knockoff and you will need an app called Sixaxis Controller from the market. Install the app and follow the directions or you can do a google search to get the directions on how to setup the PS3 controller cause u have to hook the PS3 controller to your PC and change the bluetooth mac address before it will work.

Since it looks like you have BOTH the PS3 and the TV, why not play with the PS3 instead?

Just a heads up. I've only had luck getting this to work on ICS ROMS(or gingerbread). I haven't been able to get the MHL adapters to work with Jellybean ROMs. I might be the only one here.
Now if they could only get Vice City to work for us......

He might not have a PS3 and/or isn't trying to play PS3 games on the Note (I don't even think that's possible).
I say that b/c I am guilty of both myself. I bought a PS3 controller just to play games on my phone. The adapter is laggy for games though, only good for movies IMO.

[Q] Bluetooth controller (for games)?

Hey guys,
This isn't really specific to the Transformer itself, but kinda specific to HC. I figured with all the awesome emulators available for Android and how awesome they run on Tegra 2 (N64oid works great!), I'd try to find a nice bluetooth controller that works with Android.
Specifically I'd like one with analog sticks. Not sure if a good driver has been written yet for this, but if so, I figured someone on here would know.
The best setup I've found so far from my research would be to use a WiiMote with a Classic controller pro plugged into it. That setup might be a bit expensive though (~$40). I own Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers already, so I was hoping there would be a solution for one of those two (but not looking likely from my research).
Here is my ideal setup: Transformer + emulators (n64oid, snesoid, etc.) + HDMI cable + bluetooth controller = a bunch of old school consoles that can run on a portable machine that can be connected to a TV and also that has a wireless controller
Try this one http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/Wii-Wireless-Retro-Controller___EF000622.aspx
I use "wiimote controller" app. available on market for free, with classic controller plugged into wiimote. You can then use snesoid etc. to setup the buttons.
Played mario kart and zelda on snesoid using the dpad and the usual buttons but not sure if analog controllers work as have not tried them yet. Don't see why they shouldn't though.
Have a look at this..http://www.roms4droid.com/wii.php
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHFRbQKnrfg
^^^ That seems to me like the best setup. You can get an older edition of the wiimote for ~$20 and Amazon sells the Classic Controller Pro for I think ~$15 right now.
The controller I posted above is just like the classic pro but without the need to tether it to the wiimote.

Have you ordered one from codejunkies? I placed an order through Amazon, but it's going to take a month to deliver. Wondering if codejunkies is any faster or if they are just a front end to the same manufacturer/wholeseller.
Edit - oh, I see that is actually a slightly different product. I thought it was the Datel controller. I wonder if it is as compatible as the Datel seems to be.
The one on amazon is the datel I just ordered it.

Good news, when we get the 3.1 update, it will support a "ridiculous" amount of usb devices, including the Xbox360 controller.

Do you think these devices would work via the proprietary charge cable with a female to female usb adapter? That would rock.
I hope there will be some sort of support for the 360 wireless adapter. I dont want to buy a wired controller when i already have the adapter and two wireless controllers!
3.1 Platform Hightlights:
Support for joysticks and gamepads
To make the platform even better for gaming, Android 3.1 adds support for most PC joysticks and gamepads that are connected over USB or Bluetooth HID.
For example, users can connect Sony Playstation™ 3 and XBox 360™ game controllers over USB (but not Bluetooth), Logitech Dual Action™ gamepads and flight sticks, or a car racing controller. Game controllers that use proprietary networking or pairing are not supported by default, but in general, the platform supports most PC-connectible joysticks and gamepads.

Adding console controllers?

Just received my transformer prime, and currently updating it to ICS - so far everything's great ^_^ I'm really keen to try using my PS3/Xbox/Wii controller with the tablet, but can't find instructions on how to pair any of them anywhere - anyone got any ideas?
I wasted money on a PS3 controller to do just that. Then found out that its not compatible (via bluetooth) with the prime.
I have ICS and had to finally root it to be able to use my PS3 controller with bluetooth, using a third party app, but its a pain to setup each game for it.
Wiimotecontroller on the Market allows you to pair a Wiimote to the Prime via Wi-Fi. It's free but can be a pain to set up every time you want to use it. Also, as above there is an app called Sixaxiscontroller (Paid) which allows you to pair your PS3 controller to the Prime but it does require you to root. There are also some third part controllers out there such as Gamestop's own tablet controller.
Cheers but I thought it was meant to have out-the-box compatibility with these controllers?
I believe the compatibility was only wired (USB)... not wireless

You have to connect it via the USB in the dock for it to work out-the-box.
There are some wireless USB dongles that work with some controllers.
Needing root for wireless PS3 controller support is across all of Android. I don't have the technical explanation, I just know that you have to be rooted for the pairing applications to work.
Just get this. It's for the Trasnformer, but I would assume it would work on the Prime. Same connector.
I put the wrong link. But there is an adapter that provides a USB port. I just can't find it. lol
For example, what sort of game controller would you need to make this work. I'm guessing you can't use the PS3 one over USB? Does the cable just transmit power but still connects via bluetooth to the PS3?

Pretty sure the PS3 Controller works perfectly fine when you pair it with the Prime via USB, it's just via Bluetooth i.e no dock/adapter that you have to root it.

I'd suggest getting a few emulators on your Prime, FF7-9, Crash Bandicoot 1-3 and Resident Evil 3 all work near flawlessly on my Prime other than a few audio issues. I'm waiting for a fully tested root before I go ahead a root my Prime so no PS3 controller for me yet and a Wiimote to play PS1 games sucks

I have not tried the ASUS USB adapter, but it should work with the wired xbox360 controller.
I have tried using the wireless controller, with the charge-n-play kit plugged into the TF201-DOCK, which is supposed to make it equal to a wired controller, and that does not work. I do not have an actual 360 wired controller.
On the recommendation of others, I even bought the USB/BT JoyCenter app from the Market, and that did not work, though I suspect that I could use one of my Wiimotes now (I don't like that controller though).

Working controller?

I'm looking for a controller to use with my att
note. What are my options? I used to use the Wii mote with classic controller on my old iPad. It didn't work the same here. I see these female usb adapters do they work using a ps3 and or xbox controller? They all say Android 3.0 or higher. Or how bout the Gamestop wireless controller. I have all the consoles so i rather use a controller i already have if possible. Btw I'm looking to play gta3 and emulators snes nes gba.

I've seen it work, but that has always been on custom ROMs, not sure if the use of a wiimote is restricted to custom ROMs due to proper BT drivers being cooked into them or not. I never really had any desire to try it, but you're making me curious now as I have a Wii with all the toys and add ons that no one touches anymore.
Well there isn't many roms yet. I did try saurom with the wiimote and it wouldn't fully sync. The remote was found but kept blinking and just shut off. Is there a usb host on the g note? Does the female adapter work. Cause i have seen the gs2 with that working on stock ROM and this phone isn't far from that. It would be awesome to use the xbox wireless receiver.

I had wonderful luck with that, but then again I was running CM7. It becomes a keyboard input, and the android thinks you have a bluetooth keyboard.
Give that a shot.
I no longer have a wii to try it out on :/
Im using sixaxis to connect to a ps3 controller with bluetooth.
Running stock rooted.
Edit-to connect the ps3 controller you need the sixaxis app and you need to go to their website and get software for your windows pc(you will also need ps3 controller drivers), then connect the controller to your pc and use the software to edit the mac address to our phones bluetooth, the sixaxis app will show what your mac is.
They may have the same software for linux or macs, I do not remember.

Is it wireless? That'd be pretty funky to have to hook your ps3 controller into a pc in order to play on your phone.
I suggest a 6ft. Mini-USB cable attached to your laptop pc with a USB extension cable and placed on your favorite coffee table or flat surface. Add to that the HDMI cable for the note, and you have a pretty cool setup. Would it be practical? No. But would you earn major geek cred points?
You betcha.
Wait this is only to set it up at first right? After that i can use the ps3 controller at will? Without the pc.

Ok so the ps3 controller works flawlessly.wiimote won't work with touch wiz devices on stock ROM. Bluez ime don't work as far as i know unless i just don't have a supported controller. I couldn't get it to sync anything but for the ps3 remote just download sixaxis from the play store and the sixaxis pair tool from dancing pixels website on pc and connect the controller through usb cable, change the Bluetooth mac address on the controller and it will sync right up. This works for all games and emulators with on screen touch pads. I can now play all n64 snes nes games with a ps3 controller and gta3 sonic cd reckless racing all work amazing. Its the most useful controller app I've seen yet. Best part combine this with mhl hdmi out and you have a portable console in your pocket. Still haven't figured out multi player though.

The reason why I want the USB based one is to save on cost and be able to use the same controller on my bluetooth-less laptop for the PS2 emulations.
to clarify, I do NOT have any usb controller right now so I am looking for two things,
Do usb controller works with lapdock?
if so, which controller comes recommended?
Bonus point if the controller is tiny and have all of the controls that a playstation controller have.
P.S.
If this is just impossible, I'll just go with the bluetooth Nyko Playpad,

Wow, this is kind of eerie, and lucky for you at the same time. I just recently decided to buy a PS3 controller for me to use for FPSE on my Atrix using Sixaxis Controller app. It works perfectly, and it's connected using bluetooth. I use the PS3 controller even when my Atrix is mounted on my Lapdock, still using Sixaxis Controller. So, to answer your question, Get a PS3 controller, 'cause it'll work on your Atrix while using Lapdock. As a bonus, you can charge the PS3 controller via USB on the lapdock (which is what I do.) The best part is, it also works perfectly on a Windows PC using the DS3 tool. I use the same PS3 controller to play PS2 games on my PC. I can even help you out in setting it up if you go through with it. Hope this helps. And sorry if what I said is a little confusing. I just got excited 'cause I was wondering the same thing as you, just a few weeks back.

The PS3 controller connects to your phone via bluetooth. It's more convenient in my opinion, compared to hooking it up to your lapdock's USB port. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but i think it's a better solution. Your thoughts?

For the PS3 controller, it has to be a Genuine Sony Dualshock 3 or Sixaxis. Otherwise, you'll have a problem connecting it to Sixaxis controller, the app used to pair the controller to your phone. I haven't tried using a Wii controller, or any other controller for that matter. I decided to try the PS3 controller, and it works excellently for me.
I know the wiimote works just fine, i even have the gamepad connected with it, and use it for my snes games and whatnot. look up Wii Controller IME by Ryan Frawley in the store. =]

that was my concern all along, not being compatible with sixaxis. ill just wait until i really want one. not very much of a cellphone gamer. i have dslite and 3ds.
@Deafcyclist
it is possible ics has even more drivers, so i might test it later. as i recall to pair ps3 controller with sixaxis a PC is required, its through usb. i suppose it can be used like you want it.
edit: testing new jellybean alpha and my logitech gamepad works, both joystick and dpad. i have not tested any game yet but its good news native usb gamepad support.

[Q] PS3 or Xbox controller with Galaxy S3

Hey guys, I'm new here!
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience using their ps3 or xbox 360 controller with their device to play games? I've been looking into it but I haven't tried it yet. I think it would be great to be able to use them for things like emulators because for example SNES emulators are a bit dodgy to play with touch controls.
I know there's a sixaxis controller app to connect your ps3 controller and I heard that you can use a micro USB to female usb 2.0 to use your wired xbox 360 controller. I also believe you can connect a wireless xbox 360 controller if you have a wireless adapter.
Any thoughts on this?
Hi mate.
I have for the USB adapter for the S3 where you directly plug your controller into your device.it works great and is instantly rcognised! I use the ps3 controller since its more portable.only issue is that the wire and movements may cause the phone to fall when your playing games so you will have to have a good stand. Also for most games, I've used GBA, nes, psx, n64 emulators and GTA Vice city you have to configure the controller which is a pain at first.
I also have used the sixth axis Bluetooth feature which is great as well.just have to get the controller IDs off the PC and configure them to the phones Bluetooth.if you connect the controllers to another device like their consoles or Bluetooth to a PC, the connection to the phone has to be done again on the PC which can be annoying. But If you have the USB phone adapter you can configure it straight away and use it wirelessly.
Only problem I have with this is that gaming can make the phone heat up so its beat to keep the case ventilated and in a cool area to avoid over heating.
But it works very well!

Hey, thank you for the information I have ordered a USB adapter to test out the xbox 360 controller which seems like the easiest option. I might get some sort of stand as well then because I can imagine it becoming annoying.. which leads me to think that although the ps3 controller seems to need a bit more messing around with, I like the idea of a wireless controller.
I was wondering about the over heating possibility although I've only really noticed the handset getting pretty hot whilst playing vice city.
Cannot wait to test this out!
Yep, as mentioned a USB On The Go cable works great with the S3. PS3 controller works just fine.. I think I remember having trouble with the 360 controller. And the sixaxis app does works great too

Oh great, thank you that's good to know my PS3 is at university so I'll try that when I get back there in a couple weeks. As for the USB cable for the xbox controller, I didn't realise I needed an OTG cable (a normal one didn't work today haha) luckily they're cheap, it should arrive tomorrow
I use the sixaxis control app and my second ps3 controller.
You can wireless control your whole phone with your ps3 controller, like changing music and videos, scrolling trough the homescreen.
If you already have a second ps3 controller its pointless to buy a usb adapter since you can buy the app for one buck and have much more comfort.

Very true. Does it respond to vibrations as well? That would be cool. I ordered an adapter because I want to try out the 360 control as well to make a conclusion as to what my favourite is
Wrong section, post in QA
Uhhh it seems fine in this section, don't think there was any need for you to comment to be honest!
i tried playing with a 360 controller and it wouldn't register the controller so, while it's a bit of a hassle to set up, you the PS3 controller is doable.

No, questions don't belong in the general section, that's what the QA section is for. Read the rules

Well it's more of a discussion if you read the rest of the thread.
Sorry if it's in the wrong section, I did state I was new here at the beginning of the thread. I watched the noob video too. It was meant for a general discussion anyway it just happens to be a question also There hasn't been a problem until you brought it up.

Did you use a OTG cable with your 360 controller? I used a normal micro usb - female 2.0 and that didn't register either but I heard the OTG cables work fine. I will try out both controls and post back what I think

That's because people don't care about the rules.
To use a ps3 controller via the cable it will work natively, to use the Xbox controller there is an app called USB BT joycenter which is available on the market.
There is also an app called sixaxis controller which will enable bluetooth for your phone and ps3 controller.
To play the games on your phone there is something called a Gameklip which is available in the accessories section of XDA in the sgs3 part.
I've bought one myself and it's really well made and works a charm.
If you are thinking of using two bluetooth pads and using the MHL cable to send the signal to a TV that is also possible but MHL on the S3 isn't great, the vast majority of people have an issue with the screen being set at a low refresh rate, or being stuck on 720p.
I myself have two LED 3D tvs, one LG which shows the picture in 1080p but at 30hz
And a panasonic viera which shows it in 1080i @ 60hz, the viera is much quicker and the input delay isn't as noticeable.
If you go down the bluetooth ps3 controller route then you will want to check out the themes and apps section to get profiles for the most popular games for the six axis app.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does.
As for the xbox controller, it is a bit too chunky to play games on your phone, not very portable and you also have to worry about that big cable dangling around all the time.
Also there is a kernel (perseus) which apparently has support for the xbox controller too.

Thank you this information is very helpful.
I did not realise that android 4.2 makes it difficult to use Bluetooth devices. (I'm on cyanagenmod 10.1). Currently I am having trouble getting the Xbox 360 controller to work with emulators and any game for that matter using the USB BT joy center app. I'm following all the instructions and recommendations to a tee! Is this because I'm on 4.2? I know the OTG cable works because it recognises the controller in the app plus I can use a USB mouse with my device.
Also I never before considered using the Wii remote. I tried to pair mine but the problem was down to the fact I have 4.2 installed. Is there any way round this? I haven't found a solution so far. In don't really want to have to downgrade

I can vouch for the Gameklip with a PS3 controller. Works very well, and is remarkably similar to Nvidia's new Project Shield.
I use a wired connection to the S3 because it's simpler and also because I found sometimes SixAxis would get pushed out of memory and closed if I was playing a heavy game. Annoying if your controller stops working mid-game.

Okay, so got time for a response.
It was in General section, which is against the rules. I reported the thread and a mod moved it in QA. Got it?
If you think that enforcing the rules is silly, you don't belong here.
What exactly do I have to read?
