help stuck - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so my gtab will only show the three birds, i took the cover of the back and held down the reset button and it turned off then back on to the same screen. I even tried to nv flash it and it says that it currently update. Im not even able to get into recovery mode. Am i screwed or did i miss something, im sorta new to this stuff....thanks

1. What rom were you using?
2. Which version of CWM are you using?
3. What were you doing to the tablet when it froze like that?
There's a lot of things that can go wrong and which NVflash you use (250m partition or 350m partition) is going to be determined by which rom you wish to run.
The Gtablet for dummies site really helped me out while I was starting off, but it appears its no longer online.
Going to need some more info and I'll try to help as best and as fast as possible, but real life keeps me pretty busy most of the time.

i had ics, not sure what version, clock i think was 5. something. i know that this dont help much. i was able to get it working,
what i was trying to do was get it back to the way it came new so i could start all over with a new rom. Now i found what i thought was the stock rom but all it will do is sit on the screen where it says gtablet, i even let it sit over night, while i was at work and still the same screen.

Nobe (has some kick ass roms) has already done the legwork in another thread, try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070655
first download, should but you back at stock with a 1.2 branch ready to go.
I know it sucks, I've NVflashed dozens of times to work off of stock, I still get a little jittery every time I load another rom.

So my father in law installed the 350 zip and jellybean 5.3 on his with no issues. i followed the same video he did and it said that everything installed good until i went to reboot, there it got stuck on the bird screen but im still able to do nvflash, apx and power down....Am i screwed ??

We'll have to see.
See this thread, run the commands there and post the output.

You may also try the detailed instructions by Raywaldo (Google Raywaldo for his site) on installing new ROMs on GTablet. In my opinion Smoother Bean v 1.5 (by nobe1976) is the best/fast ROM for this device.

I received my new GTablet day before yesterday from Amazon. I read through a lot of forums before deciding to buy it. Out of the box, I charged it and connected it to the wireless network. Do you have clockwork mod on it? If you DO put it on there, you CAN get it back off and return the unit to stock, so don't worry too much about that. You have to perform an nvflash though (which is not necessarily harder than installing clockwork mod or a custom rom, but can be problematic at times.)
The thread on that is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
If it were me, I would give installing clockwork mod a try and update to the newest viewsonic rom or try one of the custom roms such as Vegan, TnT Lite or TwoTapsX.
Hopefully it works out for you - I'm confident it will. These things are almost impossible to brick.
Thanks a lot for a quick reply. So the way I understood....
1: I need to install Clockmod and that will bring the Gtablet back to Stock
2: After that I need to do the nvflash
3: and then I can install tnt2.4
Does that make sense.... Do I need to do the nvflash.. Just from the look of it, it seems kind of complex.
Again I really appreciate your quick reply on this.

1. No. ClockworkMod does not bring the tablet back to stock. It makes it easier to flash custom ROM's and backup your tablet.
2. No. You do not have to nvflash after installing Clockwork. That would remove it.
3. Sort of. You can go right to installing a custom ROM as soon as you have ClockworkMod installed. DO NOT use TwoTapsX if you have installed ClockworkMod. It will not work and will result in you having to do an nvflash. TnT_Lite will work just fine.
coolrazas,
I think you should be cautious!! VS has told you to exchange it. That might not be a
bad idea.
BUT, it all depends on how serious the original error was. And I haven't heard an
authoritative answer on that yet.
IF you can handle all the stuff that's been suggested -- you might make it good as
new. But you also could have more problems.
I know you are anxious to have the tab and be up and running -- but I'd make darn
sure I had a good one first even if that means sending it back.
Rev
I agree. I think I can handle the techie stuff (new to android but seasoned on Windows platform) but you are right. If the hardware is faulty then I will be facing the same problem again. When I called Viewsonic Customer support, they said that they are aware of this issue so just send it back. She was pretty straight on the phone.
And again, I have to ask this question. Why in the world isn't viewsonic spending more resources on software? With better software, the gtab would be in direct competition with both the xoom and ipad 2.
I completely agree. If the issues are known and after reading tons of information on xda forum, its insane not to listen to this large customer base and really bring this tablet to the next level and capture a larger chunk of the market. Pretty amazing.

Did you let it actually restore the factory default? My Gtab did the same thing (I just got it last week) and I had to reset it. It's odd that the factory reset is different than what it ships with. But, either way, you have to wait for the message on the screen that it's reloading the image BEFORE you let go of the volume+ button.
Can Be Finicky....
coolrazas,
It also can be said that even in the best of times, the G-Tablet can be a
little finicky. One of my tablets the other day was a normal as could be.
I shut it down and the next day turned it back on. Continual "android.process.acore" errors. Had to fix it.
I say be conservative, be consistent in what you do, use only the "approved"
stuff, don't take advice you can't verify is good, and read, read, read, read!
Good luck to you. BTW, what I did was buy a second G-Tablet so I always have one up for use while working with the other!!!
Right now one is on OTA 3991 with plans to go back to 3588 when the new OTA comes out (if it does!). The other is
TwoTapX .9.0.2 and will stay there until VS lets us know the directions they are going -- and the roebeet will move ahead.
Hope this helps you. Enjoy!

I have decided to return this one and hope that the newone will not have an issue so I can move on with Clockmod and TNTlite. I will mail it today and hope I will get the new Gtablet from Amazon sometimes this week... Ah... Few more days. Thanks for everyone's input here. I will be getting back on this forum a lot more as I have to learn LOT more......
Is somebody get the same problems because of which it were necessary to return g-tablet?
Or having patience and endurance it is possible to solve any problem?
Getting my new Gtablet today
So finallly I am going to get my new replaced G-Tablet today . Just checked the UPS tracker and it says that it will be delivered this evening. Here are my plans now.... And please correct me if I am planning to do something wrong here.
After unpacking it,
1: Upgrade to the new Viewsonic firmware.... I believe it does it by default once you are connected to the wireless network.
2: Install Clockwork mod
3: Install TnT 2.4
Hopefully this will work this time. Any suggestions.....
use most recent
"3: Install TnT 2.4"
I would suggest using the most recent version of TnT. ie 4.4.0.
For this one you don't have to use use clockworkmod, but it will work ok with
clockworkmod.
If you're still unsure, you may want to try these steps:
www blendblog net/Default.aspx?tabid=36&EntryID=67

It helps that everything is layed out step by step.
Seems like the link that you provided talks about installing VEGAn. there is another embedded link in the post that talks about TnT4.4 installation as well. Considering the two platforms, which one would you guys prefer? By teh way, got my new Gtablet and ready to roll this evening with this process.
Hint: Look at the sticky force closing thread in this forum. Pay close attention to the original post.
I'm still puzzled why people aren't pointing new people to that thread.

You are correct. The link does provide steps to install vegan. I meant it as an alternative to tnt.
For me and my tab, vegan with pershoots kernel is much more responsive than tnt alone.
If you google vegan tab you'll find gojim's website. There hasn't been any updates in a few days but it sounds like one will be forthcoming. Im waiting and watching for that one as well as waiting for an update on calkulins rom. It also sounds pretty snappy.

NEW GTAB!

Hello everyone,
i just recently purchased a gtab and tried to install clockwork recovery on it. that didnt seem to work so i tried to do a factory reset. my guess is it tried to boot to CWM but the files were messed so now its stuck at "booting recovery kernel image". can someone assist me? my plan was to put cwm on it, and then put Vegan on it, but that foiled.
Thanks!

What version of CWM did you try to install? Do you know what bootloader you're on? I'd imagine that you tried flashing the 1.1 BL CWM and ended up in a softbrick because you have a 1.2 BL G-Tablet...
G-Tablet for Dummies is your friend...google it, read every page, then decide what you want to do. At the start here page, you're on a code red, I believe.
If you happened to install a wrong CWM bootloader version, you are in BIG trouble. The "stuck bird sign" is not a good sign
Last time it happened, I used code DETOX to set it straight in viewsonic gtablet for dummies.
THis thing is unbrickable (virtually unbrickable), so no worries~
I have to agree. I got my gtablet about a month ago. Nothing I did seemed to work, until I found the gtablet for dummies site. Within about two hours, I was up and running with a real android operating system with full market.
That site ROCKS!
Thank you all so much for the reply. I just got it today and knew I didnt want TnT but i guess i rushed with the process and did the wrong bootloader. Im gonna look in to that when i get home to my own PC and see what happens. Thank you!
ok. i read over the Gtablet for dummies website, and that reminded me that there must be something wrong with the install of CWM. all it does is say ANDROID in orange on the left of the screen and then a grey triangle shows up. im going to attempt to be the Triple Code Red tonight and hope that works.
Humblemuffin,
Don't give up! I totally messed up the g tablet shortly after taking it out of the box. After much research and trying various steps/techniques, I eventually was able to bring it back.
I posted the exact steps I used here on xda and on slatedroid.
They can also be found on the Viewsonic Gtablet For Dummies site under "How-To". Follow the steps exactly and I am confident you will get your g tab restored.

thaks for the advice. im quite grateful that theres people able to help me here. ive been reading gtablet for dummies, but i seem to be at even more of a standstill. i think my CWM is corrupt or something. after it says "Recovery Key Press Detected", it shows ANDROID in yellow/orange letters on the left of the screen for about a second, then a grey triangle with an exclamation mark pops up. i think using the wrong bootloader kind of screwd me over. i always try and rush with my technology like this. thank you!
Here is another potential solution for you to consider. It does not require the use of ADB which makes it a little easier than my steps. If it you think this one will work for you, then I would recommend doing it before mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13474033&postcount=114
Thanks for the reccomendation! I sent you a message about it and maybe we could get it up and running. My main concern now is that my CWM still doesn't work. That's kind of worrysome to me because all the potential fixes I see envolve using it at one point or another.
Blank Screen, background light
I went to GTablet for Dummies as well, to install CWM and then a new OS. Unfortunately, my GTab would not accept the installation of CWM. I have a 1.1, and tried installing the version 1.1....following the directions exactly They then suggested I install nvflash, which I tried with no success. Now, my GTab just shut down...blank screen with background light. Prior to the shut down, it had over 40% battery life left. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well, when I first got a gtab, i messed up the bootloader (installing the wrong version of bootloader), CWM doesn't work. Etc...etc...luckily apx mode still work. This is what I do. I think it is sorta the ultimate wipe.
Edit: I wasn't allowed to put link outside since I was a new user. But you can just go to viewsonic gtablet for dummies website
USE THE CODE DETOX. The code detox invovles you nvflashing your rom with this format.zip file. It might look similar to other nvflash at first glance except when you use the format zip nvflash, you will see "magic-value -mismatch" in red color.
After you nvflashed your tab with format.zip. Do another Nvflash, but this time, Nvflash your tab with "NVFlash to Stock with CWM pre-installed" . Get the right bootloader, and follow the steps described later in viewsonic gtab for dummies, and you have a smoking gtab soon enough
Um... guys, just download my nvflash with cwm pre-installed and use that. No need to put cwm on separately.
To goodintentions, TJEvans, fury7, tidbit, djab76, SM Daly, ahandlen003, and goodintentions again.
Thank you so much. i know the task is yet to be complete, but i finally was able to get past the bootloop and in to TnT to do the OTA update. im going to be much more careful with any more modding. for the record, the NVflash with CWM pre installed for BL 1.2 was the ticket. CWM looks so beautiful after being in the pits for a few days.
if all goes to hell again, ill let you all know.
Thanks again!

Before I bought my gtab, i spents hours reading up on roebeets and others @ xda, blogspot and slate. took tons of notes. had everything laid out step by step. even had nvflash files set up. Had minimal prblems.

I have a question I think I jump the gun on this one. I tried to install ClockWorkMod for my G tab 1.2 I got the file from GTablet for dummies but everytime I tried to install it it will just sit on the "Recovery key detected" and then it says "Booting recovery kernel image" and with the 3 birds and it just sits there! I can't get into recovery mod. either but I can turn it off and it boots fine to the homepage. What can i do? The person I bought it from had it rooted but he said he returned it back to stock rom. Thanks for the help.
Can someone help me, please.

If it were my Gtab, I would nvflash it back to stock myself just in case. Just pay attention to the requirements of the custom ROM you want to flash: some are for 1.1 and some for 1.2 -- nvflash accordingly. Anyway, learning and setting up nvflash is a good thing if you plan to flash custom ROMS with any regularity.

[Q] Glitches w CM10ROM, tried to reinstall, now stuck in boot loop....help?

I was running CM10 experimental (supposedly stable) build and was having way too many issues: reboots 5+ times a day, random freezes requiring hard reboot, etc etc. I tried uninstalling latest apps...nope. Tried fixing permissions...nope. Finally decided to reinstall the ROM. Used CWM wiped all 3 times, went to istall from zip, couldn't find the ROM anywhere. I installed an older ICS ROM I found in there and it did it's thing until it was time to boot up...now it's stuck in boot loop. I tried removing battery, turning off with both buttons, connecting to usb...not recognized. It just keeps going thru the booting process until it says "Have a nice day!" and then starts over. How do I get in to fix this? I'm screwed....and of course use my phone all day for business......sheesh. Are there ANY JB ROMs out there that are actually stable...like in real life?
Love this site, love all of you helpful folks....pulling my hair out at this point...;-(
You're kinda asking a lot since jb has to be ported over at the moment which naturally leads to glitches such as the restarts. This is the price you pay to run jb months and months before the note is officially updated. at which time the source code will be come available and we will have rock solid jellybean builds. Until then we take what we get. Run the latest release candidate of cm9 until then if you want something super stable.
Also don't you have a backup you can restore? I'm not allowed to feel sorry for you if you never backed up your device.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Thanks for the reply JR, your statement " jb has to be ported over at the moment which naturally leads to glitches such as the restarts" is Greek to me. Are you saying that since it is not an official JB update, there will always be glitches? um...ok.
Yes, I have a few backups in there...but as I said, it is stuck in opening boot loop and I don't know how to get in there to restore or flash another ROM. I may be missing a simple fix here but until I know what it is, I don't know what it is. I have used search under boot loop, for an hour and have not found one thread explaining how to get out of it.
Hopefully someone will excuse my ignorance and point me to a thread or explanation of how to get past the boot loop.
Cheers
do you know how to boot into recovery?
if you can, then do that, and restore one of your backups..
if you dont know how to boot into recovery, you shouldn't be flashing roms until you do
AFAIK that means pressing volume up, home, and power until recovery lights up. Done that many times and all I get is the intermittent vibe, no flash, no screen at all.
I've poured over threads and google all day...no love. Just people telling me to restore my backups...gee thanks.
I CAN get it into Odin....can I flash a ROM from there? I followed one tutorial but when selecting a ROM, it wanted a tar file and I either had the ROM zip or unzipped, a bunch of folders with no tar file in any of them.
I'm not a moron, just screwed myself somehow and am looking for some help fixing it. I thought that's what these forums were for.
hold volume up and down and power at the same time; after the first "samsung" on the screen, release the power button, and keep holding the volume up and down, until recovery appears...
XDA is a development forum, not a newbie forum, and there is an assumption that people who flash stuff to their phones will have the basic knowledge to know how to recover from some of the problems that arise when you do something to your phone that requires the knowledge on how to fix things
The fact that you dont know how to get into recovery properly tells me you didnt bother to read and study enough on how to recover from a problem if you have one, sort of like trying to replace your water pump without actually practicing on a car..
search the forums if you need to find .tar files to restore your phone via Odin back to stock; there are several posts and threads that will show you how, but, try to recover your back up first
This ^^^^^. You have jumped into the deep end without knowing how to swim. Watch videos, read how-to's and look up words if you don't understand them. A basic knowledge of computer hardware and how a computer works pre-boot will also go a long way

It means there is no official jelly bean for the note at this time. Our devs have to take jelly bean code and modify it to work on the note which generally means a few hickups here and there.

Well thank you all for the help you have given. I was not releasing the power button after the first Samsung flash and thus not finding recovery. I have a functioning phone now, at least. I do, dig deep trying to find answers, and only post when I am truly stuck.

Stuck with a Transformer that I can't change the ROM to

So a complicated story:
I bought a transformer prime some time ago then rooted it and installed WOOKIE rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827) then it's sat unloved for a few months.
However I've tried to resurrect it for the festive period and am in trouble. (I've been a keen user of the roms on here for many years, with a smart phone for over 10 years, so I'm not completely thick!)
I'm trying to get paranoid android on it;
However, as soon as I go to CWM and try to install the ROM I get a terrible error message, (Will update once I can get it on my screen but it's on 0% charge currently) but can roll back to install a backup, so that's not the end of the world.
So my issue is how do I get from what I have to where I want to go to?
I think the solution is as follows:
a) I need to get Clockwork ROM working well first. Any ideas?
b) I need to downgrade the ROM to something, But I'm unsure what
c) If a and b are in place, I think I can do the rest.
Please help me! All this talk of downgrading roms has confused me.
1. Let go of CWM. No one uses it anymore. Download TWRP here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 It will probably fix your errors and it has a lot more features than CWM, is more polished etc.
2. Without NVFlash you can't downgrade. Here is guide how to do it: https://www.androidroot.mobi/pages/guides/tegra3-guide-nvflash-jellybean/ If you don't want to downgrade I recommend you to install CMB rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2501812 It's Android 4.3.1, everything works and is probably fastest ROM that we can get on our primes.
Thank a bunch zdenko1.
I'm on the case, however I left my laptop entirely flat overnight, so it's upto 0% and 3% charged. And it's Christmas eve!
It's really good to have someone help me out with a bit of detail - so thanks for this.
If I don't post, assume it works, and here's to a peaceful Christmas break to you all
Now I think I have cooked my goose!
I was unable to get anywhere with this,
So with an air of confidence I ran a program (again the name escapes me) which lets you return your computer back to stock, from which one is able to get it working and you're back to square 1.
Great I thought and as ususal I throw my self both feet in.
It formats fine etc until it asks me to get the original update ROM/blob I think -
which I didn't have, so hen tried to download it and couldn't find it.
So now I think it really is screwed
Nothing formatted, I can't enter recovery mode and things are looking bad.
Does ODIN work/provide an answer? If so please help!
Of course I realise that ODIN is Samsung own!
So I think I need a ROM/BLOB that restores me to a working copy via bootloader?
Is that on the right line?
Just seeing if I have to give this up as lost and sell as broken or can it be resurrected?

DO NOT INSTALL ANY OTHER RECOVERY WHILE USING THE NEW 4.2.1 BOOTLOADER, THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE AT THE MOMENT, THE ONE BUILT IN IS MODDED. USE THE DOWNGRADE ZIP TO TAKE YOU BACK TO 4.1.1 BOOTLOADER AND RECOVERY IF YOU NEED IT.

Using the link you provided in the OP, scroll down until you see the downgrade hairybean 4.1.1 bootloader and recovery. That should get you to a point of being able to flash a new rom.

[Q] New to posting, not new to the forum

Hi everyone,
I have been frequenting XDA for quite a while. Hugely into android and custom roms and things of the sort, but have never had a real reason to post. I have either been lucky enough to be able to find what I need by searching, or figured it out myself. This time however, I am pretty stumped.
I did a fair amount of research before starting this, and am now seeing that I did not do quite enough. If I am in the wrong place please direct me to a better one.
Here is my issue:
I have an LG g2 that I recently picked up used. Phone has never been rooted or worked on...until now. Decided I would spend my weekend working on it. Successfully rooted, and installed TWRP. Decided to flash a rom, downloaded my rom as I have always done, put it on the sdcard, made a couple of nandroids, and flashed it. Everything seemed ok, booted back up, got the correct boot animation, but it bootlooped. No big deal Im thinking, go back into recovery and wipe a couple times. Still wont boot. Go back in and restore my nandroids, and they wont boot either.
So now I am worried. Try it a coulple more times, and somehow get it to reboot to the setup screen. Wont go past there. Do the trick to avoid it and cant get it to activate. Double check everything, power off, wipe, power back on and now it wont even load to there. I tried sideloading a different rom as well as what seems to be the stock software and nothing. Im lost, I need help. Any advice?

Sounds like you need to restock and start over. I'd give you links but how to do so varies by which version or carrier the phone is from.
