Problem when plugging my S3 with USB to PC - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When plugging my S3 with USB it only says its a portable mediaplayer and does not show whats on my SD-card, Please help!

the fact that it shows as a portable media player is normal: that's what it shows for me when it's either rooted or stock. you should be able to click on it and see 2 storage options your internal storage and the SD card.

do you have an SD card installed? maybe it's the drivers not working. try on another PC and see if it'll read.

Drivers Problem
This frequently happens to my computer so I know how you feel.
To solve this problem,
1. Go to devices and printers.
2. Click on your S3 device, it should be there.
3. Look at the bottom of the window
4. If it says that the device needs troubleshooting, right click the device and select troubleshoot.
5. Wait for troubleshooting to complete
6. Your SD Card and Phone memory should now pop up on your computer.
Unfortunately i have not been able to find a permanent workaround for this problem. So this solution has to be applied everytime you connect your phone to the pc.
Hit thanks if i helped you!

thanks guys! i got it working!

Did you use my solution to get it working?

I found when I use stock firmware that changing from connect to MTP to PTP and back again, my computer finds the phone, eventually but running an AOSP or Cyanogen the computer finds it without any problem

How do I remount the SD?

When I plug my Atrix into a device (computer, car, etc) via USB, the SD card auto-mounts. I would like to be able to adjust when it mounts but the auto-mount isn't a huge problem. My issue is that when I unplug the phone from a device the SD card doesn't automatically remount.
Is there a way to set up the SD card to automatically remount? Is there a manual way to remount besides restarting the phone?

Did u try mounting in Settings --> SD card and storage
Yes, when I go to that menu it says, "Insert an SD card to mount". I'm not able to click "mount" because it is grayed out with the above message on it.
Any other ideas?
When u plug your phone in, there should be a USB icon @ the top of the screen. Pull that down, and select 'Do Nothing' that should clear up your problem. Always make sure you do this before unplugging your phone if it mounts the SDCard to avoid corrupting the data. Let me know if this fixed your problem.
I have the same exact issue. Selecting "None" for usb mode does nothing for me either. I have to reboot my phone just to get the SD Card and Internal storage to re-mount.
I don't know if this is related but I am also running ADEO ROM.

I'm rooted but running stock otherwise.
Selecting "none" just affects the phone's internal storage, not the SD card. Also, whenever i plug my phone into any device it automounts the SD, I'm never given an option. It is really frustrating when I just want to charge via USB and not mount my SD card.
Any other ideas? Is there an app that would solve this?
EDIT: I'm also having an issue where my PC won't let me "eject" the internal storage of the phone or the storage on the SD (drives F and G) so I have no choice but to just unplug it.
I should add that with my case my phone unmounts internal storage AND the sd card. It's to the point to where I am using adbWireless in order to push or run any other commands needed for adb.

Yeah you and I are having the exact same problems. This is really aggravating. However, I might have found a solution. In the app switchpro, you can set one of the controls (icons) to be "media remount". I have had soem limited success with it. Try it out yourself and let me know if it fixes the problem.
Thanks
I'm having the same problem. I downloaded the SwitchPro app and used the toggle mount/unmout successfully, so i don't have to restart the phone. It's a shame I had to buy an app to fix a problem with a new phone. I believe the first day of owning the phone I may have unplugged from the cpu while in media link mode for the usb connection, but since then I have it set to "none".
I am not rooted, nor am I running adeo rom as mentioned above.

OK I'm glad we've found a fix of sorts at least.
That reload media widget works for my music player. Unfortunately, my widgets (dependent on teh SD card for skins) don't reload properly liek the rest of my media does. I'm still stuck powering on and powering off every time i unplug from a device.
SD Card problem
I think I have the opposite problem. I just rooted using aRoot. Now, when plugging the phone into my computer using a USB cable, the phone says the SD card is ready to be removed. And the Media Link can't read it either. Once I unplug the phone from the computer, the SD card is able to be used by the phone.
Any ideas?

My problems started after I used aRoot as well. Unfortunately, I never really found a solutions. I've just been restarting my phone whenever i plug it in. In your case, have you tried switching it into mass storage mode after plugging it in?

I've tried every setting with no luck. All I wanted to do is add some music to my SD card. So I ended up taking the card out of the phone and inserting it directly into my computer in order to add the music. Not the best solution to the problem.
No definitely not. At least the files get transferred faster that way

[Q] Help - USB question under Cyanogen 7

I am a complete noob when it comes to Android, having first got my G-Tab yesterday. I'll give some background before I get to my question.
Yesterday, I sideloaded a couple of apps by essentially copyng them over to the root directory on the G Tab. But, like most others, I found the stock OS very slow and unresponsive. So I installed CyanogenMod 7 as per some simplified directions that I found. Everything went fine. That's not the problem.
My problem is that I cannot sideload anymore. When I plug in my G-Tab through the USB, I hear the Windows two thumps, and nothing happens. I look to see if my tablet is showing up in the Winders Explorer, and it just shows a bunch of memory sticks that when I click on them, I can't access. Also, nothing is showing up on the tablet either (no dialog boxes like under the stock OS, nothing). This is a big problem for me since I don't have access to WIFI at the moment.
Does anyone know how I can make my computer and tablet see each other? If you tell me to do something, please tell me where to find it. For example, on another thread, someone advised someone else to turn on USB debugging for something, but I can't find any option for USB debugging in Cyanogenmod 7 under settings. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Additional info:
Computer: Laptop running Windows Vista
Did you try swiping on the notification area and enabling USB transfer on the tablet?
If you don't do this, your computer will see the USB device but not as mass storage.

Thanks. I did swipe in the notification area, and the only notification there was that USB debugging was activated. But still the G Tablet and computer cannot see each other.
Double check in your device manager (PC) to make sure there are no issues with the drivers.
Thanks. I found it and also found out that it is turned on by default. So I guess that doesn't help.

Does Cyanogenmod 7 require special drivers? The drivers worked fine on the stock build, and nothing changed since then. Everything looks ok.
I plugged my Gtablet (CM7.02 with Pershoots 4/30/11 kernel) in to my computer just now to test. I haven't used it on this computer since installing CM7. I did just work on my boss's Gtablet the other day running both stock TapnTap and VEGAn 5.1.1 and it worked fine on his.
I plugged in the tablet, Windows 7 (32bit) said it was installing drivers, driver install completed successfully.
On my tablet I then swiped up the notification bar and tapped on the selection that said "tap here to mount USB to share files with your computer" (or something like that). The Android mascot screen popped up and I tapped "Turn on USB".
New drive opened up on my computer that was the gtablets /sdcard.
So it works and used the same driver as before.
No special drivers for CM7.
One nice thing about CM7 (or maybe Ginger) is that now when plugging in you get access to both the internal and external SD cards from PC.

My computer Vista (32 bit) at no point said it was installing drivers after I upgraded to Cyanogenmod 7.
When I swipe the notification area (and I assume that the notification area is the area at the top of the tablet's screen), I get a menu that tells me that USB debugging is activated and that's all. No option to mount USB. And no screens popped up to ask to turn on USB. None of this.
And when I plug in the USB, as I mentioned, I get the two tones from Windows, and 3 new removable disk drives appear. But when I click on each, I get am asked to insert a new disk.
That's all the info I have at the moment.
At this point, I'm so sick of it. I think that probably somewhere a switch is not flipped or a box is not checked, but I have no idea where that could be. I'm seriously considering using ClockWork mod to restore the system. But I'm loathed to do this since I spent 2 hrs. downloading Cyanogen Mod last night (I have a slow internet connection).
I would suggest that you turn off "USB debugging". That setting exists to activate adbd on the tablet, and normal users, usually, never need it. Enable "USB debugging" only if you need to use adb.
After disabling USB debugging, reboot the tablet, and then connect the USB cable to the mini-USB slot on the gTablet. As soon as you do that, on CM7, a USB Mass Storage screen with a green Android will pop-up with a message saying "USB connected" and button to "Turn on USB Storage".
Click the button and a warning that "If you turn on USB storage, some application you are using will stop and may be unavailable until you turn off USB storage.", will appear. Select OK. The green Android will now turn orange and the screen will say "USB storage in use".
Use the "Turn off USB storage" when you're ready to wrap up.
Ok. I think I might have solved the problem, but some intervening events makes me not sure. Basically, I restored to factory and then put in a different ROM, VEGan7. However, while doing this, I think I might have found the solution to my original problem.
It turns out that it does seem to be a problem with Windows, or at least with Vista. I had the same problem with VEGan7. But this time, I right-clicked on the "removeable disk" that appeared under "Computer" (where you see all your drives) when I hooked up the G TAB via USB. After I right-clicked, I selected properties and then clicked on the "Hardware" tab. You will see a list of all possible storage devices to associate with that icon. I chose the one containing the string "Tegra2" and I was off to the races. I was then able to perform the actions mentioned above about activating the USB on the G Tab.
I suspect I could have used this technique with Cyanogen 7. The only thing that I question is that I saw 3 removeable disk drives appear and not just one. I hope this helps someone else who might run into the same problem.

Did you by any chance have an external micro SD card on the tablet?
If so, I'm thinking that you saw the 2 SD cards + the APX debug mode device.
flash this zip (in post #3) to mount the internal storage as an SDcard instead of EMMC. If you run that then you should be able to mount the storage when running CM7
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20913-cyanogen-7-viewsonic-g-tab-usb-connection/
also your other option is to boot into Clockwork recovery then go to mounts/storage and mount usb
you should then be able to transfer files back and forth

Thanks, I'll give it a try. What are the ramifications of mounting the internal storage as an SD card instead of EMMC? Do I lose performance? I mean, there must be a reason that the default is EMMC.
I wouldn't want to boot into Clockwork every time I want to transfer something, apps or even music and videos. That would be a real pain. Actually, I was surprised at how long this tablet takes to boot up after a complete shut down.

From what I have read that's the way that Gingerbread does it. Some programs actually have problems with that configuration, that's why people do this.

Do you think you might post the file here. When I go to that link I'm not allowed to download it. The irony is that that link says it came from here but I've used the search and I can't find it here. Maybe it is just day after Cinco de Mayo problems I'm having?

sd card is being used as mass storage - sd card empty now!

guys, big issue here
On my wife's phone, she tried to take a picture and all of the sudden she got an error "sd card is being used as mass storage". now she cannot locate any of her files on the internal storage. as a matter of fact she doesn't have sd card. I checked under settings > storage and all I see is usb storage avaiable & used is at 11.50 gb.
also all backups are gone
can anyone help?
That happens when the phone is connected to your PC, if the PC is using it then you can't see it on your phone.
1. Make sure you aren't connected to your PC via USB.
2. Reboot the phone.
3. If still no joy then try a factory reset (there are probably other ways to fix this, but this is the simplest and noob friendliest way)

Not showing backup files

Backed up my tp for the nightly update. However when I connect my TP to laptop, it show nothing in there where it used to be. It does show the backups when I use files viewing app on the TP itself. Is anyone having the same problem? Or what I can do to fix it?

When you connect to the laptop, you can't see your backups, or you can't see anything?
To see the files in your TP, go to storage > 3 dots on upper and side > click on them and select usb computer connection, then click on the MTP box. You should be able to see your files now.

And if that doesn't work reboot into clockwork and select storage followed by mount USB . Don't forget to eject on your PC before disconnecting.

[Q] I cannot mount my internal storage via USB to PC

Hello guys,
This is my first post and this place is still new to me so bare with me.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus. Rooted. Android 4.2.2
I am looking to recover some deleted files in the internal storage however whenever I plug in the USB to the PC, programs like "Paragon Backup and Recovery" and "Remo Recover for Android" cannot detect the device.
USB Debugging is checked.
I have been searching but no luck. Maybe someone here can help.
Thanks!
try kies and wandojia to update the lastest driver, it would help

sometimes change to another port would help
and also, you could switch mode (MTP, Camera, Mass Storage) and sometimes with debugging.
Eventually your PC would recognize and thus you could access to the internal data!

You could use the Chinese synchronizing software "Wandojia". It could auto-detect and install the driver for you!
Or sometimes the option is hid under the category of more settings- wireless and networks- USB utilities
Or in storage, but you have to press menu to select the option
Just keep trying, good luck !
