Hey can you explain how please. I'm a noob and i know I backed up the root but now it is telling me its gone and I'm figuring this is why. I apparently did not read well enough and now my root is gone and I am stuck on jellybean and can't get to titanium backup or my stuff and I am beyond frustrated at this point I want to throw the phone out the window. Thanks in advance.

I too need help. Same thing happened but my su-backup is on my SD card and I can't move it to /system without root

Way to fix "half-rooted" RAZR
I am afraid I lost my root as well, forgot to update the superuser after restoring root. So, after trying to run FoxFi, phone rebooted...and root lost.
This is what I did and it worked.
- First, download Matt's root fixer, link on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065995
- Extract it to a folder on your c: drive on your computer ( I used c:/tmp)
- Open a cmd prompt (in Windows 8, just type "cmd" in Search and it pops right up.)
- enter "cd c:/tmp"
- to verify contents of tmp folder enter "dir", you should see a list of the extracted folder contents
- If you need the Motorola drivers, you should have them if you downloaded Matt's Utility 1.82. Load those before connecting your phone.
- connect your phone to your computer via USB, ensure USB Debugging enabled. Your phone should connect as "Mass Storage" by default.
- enter "fixroot.bat" the FixRoot program should start
- The program will run, and reboot once. During the reboot, the cmd prompt window will display the program progress and the status after reboot. If it states "uid=0(root) gid=0(root)", then you have successfully rerooted your phone.
- NOW, GO AND UPDATE YOUR SUPERUSER APP!
All should be right with the world after that.
Cheers!

Story. I had a regular razr that was rooted I traded for an iphone 4s. Then I traded the 4s for a razr maxx. I forgot I never rooted my maxx and did the ota i downloaded here.

First you need a file explorer that looks everywhere. I use root explorer. Find the file su-backup. Mine was in the /system/bin/. Once find where it is, edit the batch file (I used notebook) to chance the directory where su-backup was actually found. The close the file and run the batch file.
The batch file is in Matt's RestoreRoot utilty.
If I left something out, blame my ADD and ask again.

No, this only restores root if it was there before the upgrade.

Dang. I had a feeling that was the case that's why I didn't try it yet.
Matt's was what I used on my regular razr.
Guess I'll wait for an exploit.

su-backup not found
How is it possible?
It tells me that su-backup is not found!
There's no way I would have deleted it myself.
I doubt there is a way its located somewhere else.
I have all the drivers installed and the process is being followed correctly.
What kind of sorcery is this?

I had lost root randomly at one point but was able to restore it with Voodoo OTA Root Keeper. That app is a life saver. IDK where it saves the backup but has bailed me out on many occassions. If someone is rooted and doesn't have that you should get it immediately.

su-backup not found
I did not backup my root anytime before the update.
Does that mean I am stuck on no root forever?

Follow this guide exactly, and you can root OTA Gingerbread on your Droid X2 That means no more SBF'ing Froyo just so you can root. I have put all the commands into a few simple scripts. Instead of doing everything manually, you can just follow this simple guide. This post assumes you have ADB installed and know how to use it, and that you have the Motorola USB drivers installed.
--
Step 1:
METHOD A: Download the attached zip file with the root files, and extract the files somewhere memorable. Plug your phone into AC charger or computer. FOLLOW STEP 2.

OR
METHOD B: Download the attached zip file with the root files, plug your phone into your computer, and put the phone in USB Mass Storage mode. Then extract the files to the internal storage device a.k.a. MOT. If you choose this method then you can SKIP STEP 2 AND GO TO STEP 3.

Mirror: http://www.mediafire.com/?t31bnhaiwyulf81
--
Step 2 (if you chose METHOD A):
Open Windows command terminal.
Type these commands:
extracted-location = place where you extracted files to, if you are in the same location as the files, then you can omit extracted-location/.
Code:
adb push extracted-location/motoroot-step1.sh /sdcard/
adb push extracted-location/motoroot-step2.sh /sdcard/
adb push extracted-location/motoroot-step3.sh /sdcard/
adb push extracted-location/su /sdcard/
adb push extracted-location/Superuser.apk /sdcard/
--
Step 3:
Type these commands:
Code:
adb shell
sh /sdcard/motoroot-step1.sh
Hard reboot your phone.
--
Step 4:
Type these commands:
Code:
adb shell
sh /sdcard/motoroot-step2.sh
Hard reboot your phone.
--
Step 5:
Type these commands:
Code:
adb shell
sh /sdcard/motoroot-step3.sh
Your phone will reboot itself.
--
Step 6:
Type these commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
Accept the Superuser prompt on your phone and allow access. Now any time you want to adb shell, you can type su afterwards and obtain root.
--
Congratulations, you are now rooted.
worked great...thank you
Trying it now.
Edit: Script works great, rooted and everything, superuser works.
Worked for me as well !! Thanks +1 . Now if only I could get into my recovery

Can someone point me in a good direction to learn ADB. I am reading over and over that the one click method doesn't work for the X2. I have a X2 running pre-rooted GB right now from the old "sbf back then root" method, but it is getting replaced on Tue. Would love to just root it when it arrives rather than sbf and stuff.
unless there is a method to get the one click to work of course....then by all means educate me on that

Sure, no problem. Here are some guides found with a quick XDA Google search, I hope they help you (or anyone else) out with ADB. Keep in mind that while this will help you learn how to use ADB and get ADB working, some of the information may be outdated or may not apply.

Thank you for that. Added the Torpedo root method! =]
Thanks for putting all that info into one spot! Definitely helps out that much more as it is somewhat easier to refer to rather than bouncing from one post to another here in the forums! I would imagine it'll help out many people (including me!).
I'm still fairly new to some things and some times the added explanation of certain topics and/or issues is what's needed to get the job done!
Also, as far as the *photon-torpedo* root method goes... I used that method without an issue on Android 2.3.4. After updating to Android 2.3.5 the other day, I used that same method again without issue and it worked perfectly! Unfortunately (at least from what I've read), being that I updated to 2.3.5, I won't be able to unlock the bootloader as if right now. Not really something I'm too concerned about, being that I hadn't prior to the update anyway.

I hate to be that guy but this is certainly relevant to the discussion at hand. I used the Photon Torpedo method originally when it first came out. Since then I have kept it stock and performed the OTA updates as they come. After each update I just run the last two commands:
/data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh
/data/tmp/install-su.sh
Always worked in the past. I just got updated to the new "2.3.5" and I can't seem to get root back. The photon-torpedo script has multiple errors "libpcprofile.so cannot be loaded as audit interface" and "permission denied". Consequently the install-su script doesn't succeed. Can't mount /system as RW and everything is permission denied.
Worst part is that the SU binary still exists in /system/bin/su but I can't use it. I get permission denied on everything I try.
Am I borked? Is there something I have forgotten?
Jleeblanch, are you using the new update from Motorola from the soak test?
Grep,
To answer your question, yes. The new update unroots your device so you will have to re-root using the photon-torpedo method again.
I was rooted prior to the update with that method and after the update I was un-rooted! Trying to re-root using Terminal Emulator on device wouldn't work. Got "permissions denied" when running the tar command. But, using adb on the computer worked without a problem!
So basically, just redo the torpedo root method from step 1 and you'll successfully get root back guaranteed!!
Hope that helps!
Also, I had the SU binary in place as you did along with other root specific apps. Those apps are pretty much worthless until you gain root again.
It has been confirmed in the "soak" that 2.3.5 update will completely un-root your device...

try it now, post 6. Are you on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5? If you're on 2.3.4 then just use the root/unlock/relock pack (the link is at the top of post 6.
OK - I see it now and I've downloaded it - thank you very much. I am on 2.3.5 from the soak test.
Are these still the correct/only instructions? If so I may still be in trouble...my "favorite method....into /data/tmp"? I don't know any method, much less have a favorite.
Instructions:
Use your favorite method to get photon-torpedo.tar into /data/tmp
Install Superuser from the Market
Install Android Terminal Emulator from the Market
Run Android Terminal Emulator
Run cd /data/tmp
Run /bin/tar xf /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.tar
Run /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh
Run /data/tmp/install-su.sh
I'm actually on my way to bed. I will write a more detailed walkthrough tomorrow and post it in the Photon Compendium. Eventually I plan to script the entire process but am working on unified webtop stuff right now.

Me to, had to used one click Root (20 times)
Navigate to the Android Market and install the “Superuser” application from ChainsDD
Download and extract 22MB Root-Unlock-Relock.zip from the Imperium website
Go to the "rsd drivers" folder located in the Root-Unlock-Relock folder and install the drivers for your system (32bit or 64bit windows)
Download photon-torpedo.tar
Place photon-torpedo.tar in the "AIO Root" folder located in the Root-Unlock-Relock folder
On your phone, in menu/settings/applications/development make sure usb debugging is checked
Connect your phone to your computer and select "charging" mode from the connections options in notifcations
From the "AIO Root" folder, double click the "Command Prompt" shortcut
Type the following commands:
adb push photon-torpedo.tar /data/tmp
adb shell
cd /data/tmp
/bin/tar xf /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.tar
/data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh
/data/tmp/install-su.sh
Ignore the errors when running torpedo and let the process complete.
Once I get some free time I'll write a single script covering everything from rooting to SBFing back to stock. My goal is to get any given process down to ten keystrokes or less.
Hmph. Well....I think it worked. Root Checker says "congrats" - but wasn't it supposed to wipe all my stuff from the phone or something?
no root doesn't wipe data. (neither does unlock if done right)

[Q] Re-Rooting Photon after OTA update to 2.3.5

I was enjoying the beauty of having a rooted device, but now that I have received an update from Motorola (which I thought was ICS) I have lost root access.
I have a Photon 4g running 2.3.5, and I did my root using a OCR when I was on 2.3.4. I have tried that OCR again among others and torpedo photon and no luck. Every app I try says that it was denied superuser access (which is still installed). The only exception to this is Play Movies, which says that "This app currently does not support root access, and your device is rooted" I do not know where else to turn. I just want to be part of the cool kids again. Please someone help me.
I have had success with the photon torpedo method on 2.3.5. I recommend trying it again being extra careful to follow the steps exactly.

I got the OTA update to 2.3.5 yesterday, and photon-torpedo is NOT working for me. After running photon-torpedo.sh, I get the error message, but my prompt doesn't change to # or root. Trying to run install-su.sh doesn't work since I'm not root and gives me permissions errors. Has anybody gotten photon-torpedo to work after yesterday's OTA update?

For those who successfully rooted w/Photon Torpedo... is your 2.3.5 from the May Soak, was it re-soaked last week, or was it 2.3.5'ed for the first time this week?
God, I'm glad I told Moto to fsck off & swore I'd never install another Moto update (soak, push, or otherwise) again. Refusing last week's soak just might have enabled me to grudgingly endure my final 50 days with this miserable excuse for an Android phone.

You don't need to create /data/tmp in your phone's internal storage. That folder already exists inside the system partitions. Use ADB to push it in. Follow the instructions in the Photon Torpedo thread.

I didn't have my phone Rooted before the update to Android 2.3.5 but after trying several different methods I found one that worked with ADB and torpedo program/files with a step by step that actually says to have 2.3.5 I followed the instructions and it worked for me, only problem I had was I unzipped the photon-torpedo.tar file by mistake... it doesn't have to be unzipped into the folder just place the whole file in the folder.

The MoPho I rooted is fairly unique, so I can't promise anything, but this is what worked for me. All credit goes to edgan. I didn't develop anything.
Photon Root Instructions
1. Create a folder in the C:/ drive on your Windows 7 machine called Photon root. (You can call it anything you want, but that’s what I called mine and will use for the purpose of this post).
2. Download and install the adb package from here and install them into C:/Photon root.
3. Download photon-torpedo.tar from here and copy it to C:/Photon root in your windows machine. Do not unzip it.
4. On your phone, go to Settings > Applications > Development and select USB Debugging.
5. Plug your phone to your computer and on your phone, set it to USB Mass Storage.
6. Copy photon-torpedo.tar from C:/Photon Root to your phone’s internal storage using Windows 7. Don’t put it in any folder, and leave it zipped.
7. Install Superuser from the Market. (This is absolutely necessary to do before you get started or it won’t work)
8. Open the command prompt (Start >> run “cmd” >> enter)
9. Type the following commands – don’t worry about the errors, it will be all right
• cd C:/photon root
• adb push photon-torpedo.tar /data/tmp
• adb shell
• cd /data/tmp
• /bin/tar xf /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.tar
• /data/tmp/photon-torpedo.sh
• /data/tmp/install-su.sh
10. That's it. Reboot and enjoy.
Hey Mopho's - I'm currently running a rooted (via shabby's AIO) stock sprint v 2.3.4 .... System Version : (45.3.6.MB855.Sprint.en.US) / Build number : 4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_6
I've tried downloading the OTA 2.3.5 via wifi, and installation was going ... but upon reboot - it says update failed. Tried this 2x - I didn't see many commenting on going back to an original stock rom before, getting the OTA update, and that rather - rooted devices would be unrooted after 2.3.5 OTA. I've never installed any other ROM besides what came with the phone...
Was there something I needed to do to "unroot" or revert without wiping/losing my current settings / apps ? Basically, what can I do to get this done
rooted apps installed : AdAway / Superuser free / Root Basic Check free / LBE Privacy Guard / Wifitether
Thanks in advance for the info. I realize Shabby's AIO will not re-root my phone, so will need to see the ADB/Torpedo methods posted here after. I just need to get the OTA update working first.
I would think twice before taking that ota update. Currently, under 2.34, your bootloader should be unlockable. The main effect of the 2.35 update is to lock the bootloader.

Worked for me

John was right, just ignore the errors. This method by edgan worked for me.

I agree with bitbang, I've had enough of this bullsh*t from Motorola. It's time for me to shop around. Unfortunately for me, I have a little more than a year on my contract! I've heard that Sprint had some kind of buy back or release program where they let you trade in your phone for something new (for a "small" fee, of course). It just might be worth it to get away from Moto. This smartphone technology changes way too fast for 2 year contracts anyway.
It's a shame. When I can get this phone to work properly, it is awesome, I'm sure bitbang even agrees with that but it is definately time to move on. The Samsung Galaxy 3 looks pretty cool!

When the update fails and you see the Android guy with the "!", press and hold both volume up and down. This will show you on the screen why it failed. Common causes for failure are mods to the build.prop file or removal of core apps.

[Q] How to Re-root JB After Having to Factory Reset

I lost root when I had to factory reset my phone after the OTA upgrade. I was getting Motorola Services Stopped Errors randomly and I couldn't identify the app(s) causing it so I just reset.
Is there a root yet for the JB? I am going to assume not since it is so new.

Nope no way to root yet. Most likely you had a problem because the proper procedure wasn't followed that's on droidrzr.com (not sure if its here yet)

You can try to use Matt's root fixer found here Root Fixer near the bottom of page 19.
Download file above - Extract
Enable USB Debugging in Settings/Development (if it's grayed out you need to enable development tools at the top slider)
Enable "Unknown Sources" in Settings/Privacy
Connect Phone
go to Settings/Storage menu softkey "USB Computer Connection"
Select MTP
Run .bat tool
Should see 0 and all is well

There is no way back and no way to root, yet.
I tried rooting a JB Razr Maxx for two days with a combination of methods.
They have closed all the exploits The one that looked promising, and came close requires being able to generate a debug log.
I couldn't get the JB Razr to do that.
So as of now, no root...

Ok Re-Root method fails for me as well.

I opened the bat file and ran each command manually in a dos window to see which area was causing issues. I compared the files the bat file was looking or with what I could find with Astro file viewer. Some of the paths were incorrect. Once I corrected the paths and continued to execute each line manually it finally worked.
Thanks Matt!

Never mind I got it. Thanks Matt and tieman.
To all who are interested, if you find where the file su-backup is on your phone all you need to do is correct the file path in the batch file using text editor wherever su-backup is mentioned.

I am having the same issue. However, I do have a couple of backups, is there anyway to retrieve the needed files from therm?

I've updated my RestoreRoot.zip for each to use 3 different possibles:
/system/usr/we-need-root/su-backup
#Lastest Update of Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
/system/su-backup
#Older version of Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
su
#Generic call for su binary in either /system/bin/ or /system/xbin/
If you don't have root there.. you don't have root lol
Mine was in system bin

Correction. It was in the system folder, not system / bin. My root was restored using your tool.

Hey Matt, I see that I have system/su-backup and also su binary in system/xbin. Yet still, your script is not restoring root. I had root after 4.1.2 upgrade and using your restore root tool, but had to do a factory reset. Now it won't work the second time.

Hi badjedi
I use 50 posts per page so a link to a page 19 fails to get to the right page. A link to the post will work every time though.

I found a link to a site with a JB root method for the Razr M. Has anyone tried it? I cant because I am on my phone.

If neither of them work then it isn't gonna happen.
Try yourself calling them in adb shell.

[Q] can't get token id on htc desire x

hi guys, i'm new in this forum, and i'm new to android too, i just bought a htc desire x and want it to be root, but i have problem when trying to get token id in hasoon2000 HTC Desire X All-In-One Toolkit V2.0 [1-1-2013], it says C:\ Document is not recognized as an internal or external command openable program or batch file.
usb debugging is already connected, please any one kindly fixing my problem, thx
sorry for my bad english. btw i'm from indonesia
Did you follow these steps?
How To Use. THIS IS FOR THE PC ONLY. No plans ever for Mac or Linux. Sorry.
1. Download the toolkit DO NOT RENAME THE FOLDER
2. Download Winrar from here. Install it after you download it
3. Extract the folder anywhere.
4. Run the program.
thx for replying so quick, after i downloaded then i extract to desktop and just run the program by clicking the symbol written as desire, am i doing it right?
Try to unpack it somewhere else on a root of some partition of your PC, try to unpack it to non system partition.
ok thx, i'll try it tomorrow, i'm sorry i've to go home coz it's 11.41pm already in my town, and i'm still on friend's house.
thx anyway for your reply, i'll let you know the progress
hi nlooooo, i did what u told me to do and it worked, i unpacked to (Cdrive, but another problem came on my device when i clicked get token id.
here is the picture shows the problem
@nlooooo.....i just tried your way on rooting this device, and same problem came up on step 8 when getting token id, still it says C:\ Document is not recognized as an internal or external command openable program or batch file, i've found out my device still locked, is it because of the device still lock? here's the image shown
problem solved
hi nlooooo......i've rooted my device, just try to put all the downloaded file to C:drive, and followed your tutorial on your thread, and i succeeded, at least i saw superuser on my device, thx alot for your tutorial.
No problem, that's why we're here. If you see it then it should be it. Try to install some app that requires root privileges (Titanium Backup for ex) and see if it can get SU rights.
hi.....any recommendation of apps or what to do after this rooting? cos i really a noob in android and root things. thx

Go and open Superuser app, swipe to first screen and see if the binary is installed. Then go and clear data for Titanium and open it again.
If you still have the problem use some root explorer to check folder system/bin if there is a file named su.

I've got the same screen too, nothing is happening. What did you do to make it work?
i am getting stuck at last step i am always getting this message sending 'unlocktoken' (0kb) .
i have not installed htc sync app but just directly installed the drivers for unlocking purpose.
the boot loader is recognizing the usb connection as Fastboot usb.
using windows 7 32 bit operating system.
tried putting the unlock_code in c drive and desktop but it doesnt work.
the file is just a 1kb file.
the default view is shown as a vlc player file.
any help will much appreciated. this is my 1st htc mobile and am not used to this kind of rooting. previously owned a samsung so was using odin a lot.
