[Q] Droid X2 on 4.0+? For Wifi only media device - Motorola Droid X2

Can I install a version of 4.0 or better to my rooted X2 that will never see service again? It's laying here I thought I would use it to stream video and do some gaming on my garage TV where I'd rather not put better devices. I've seen that I can run MIUI or possibly a cyanogenmod to get 4, but if I could just install a starndard build Android 4.0 and connect over wifi I'd be pretty happy with that. Thoughts? Ideas?

You'd probably be better off just using a stock rom. You'd get much better video playback, especially with Netflix and DLNA. I use mine to stream videos from my PC alot. Gaming results may vary. There are a few newer games that only work in 4.0+ but for the most part, all the good games work fine.

One app I want to use requires 4.0+ and that is Time Warner Cable. Of Course, I could always actually run cable out there, but what fun is that, lol. If need be the latest stock update + root will suffice for Netflix, hulu +, youtube, pandora, Google Music, my usual Android games and some emulators.

Stick with stock or even CM7. A lot of apps wont work if you go to 4.x and theres nothing we can do about that.

Splashtop HD does not work

Hello everyone,
Just thought I'd let you know that splashtop remote hd(the tablet version) does not work on the galaxy tab 10.1. the regular version does work though, which is really kind of sad. I don't know how you can make a tablet specific version of an app and have it be worse on tablets than your original version. Hopefully there will be an update soon...

What is the difference?
I hope there's support for higher resolutions. My desktop is 1440 x 900 I hate how splashtop changes the resolution when connected to android.
Market now says Galaxy Tab 10.1 is supported for Splashtop HD
and there's currently a 50% discount ...w00t!

Does this mean I can watch netflix through this app? Do you have to be on the same wifi nework or something, can you use this miles away from your home?

I have yet to try over another wifi network but I can almost watch hulu vids when tethering over my Vibrant on 3g.
So my guess is it will work fine over a real wifi connection.
At home I was watching both netflix and hulu flawlessly + playing Civ V... for me this is an amazing app and well worth the money.
Do you know if someone can use the desktop while I'm using this on the tablet? But for $5, I'll just get it in either case.
Works pretty dang good on my tab now. Worth the bucks, and fun to play tricks on my GF from the other room when my computer opens up a word doc and starts typing to her... lol.

Well the point of remote desktop is to use your actual system will at a different location. So the other person will be able to use the computer, they will just be messing with whatever you're trying to do . I "tried" it the other night with my laptop and it seemed alright. Tried playing minecraft but that requires a keyboard+mouse to be playable but it was fairly smooth. I'm sure netflix and hulu would work fine.
You should be able to remote desktop to a computer on another network as long as you set up the router for that computer to do so (port forwarding, I believe??) I think there are instructions on the splashtop website for doing just that.
Sale over ?
It's still on sale, I just bought. Using it now and it works amazingly well (over wifi), far better than the other RDP clients I've tried so far. Next stop will be testing it's performance over the wifi hot spot on my captivate.
Five bucks already well spent.
Edit: works over 3G, but not super well. I suspect my mediocre upload speed is to blame. Afraid there's not a lot I can do about that right now. I'm moving soon, so hopefully my new place will have some better options for internet.
just thought i'd add i'm using this right now.. posting this reply.. from manhattan.. remotely connected to my pc in eugene oregon. i am tethering from my 4g tmobile and its almost as good as my wifi from home. Speedtest shows a 50ms ping and a 6- 8mbps connection.. I can stream netflix or stream movies from my pc and they are pretty darn smooth.. 5000 miles away!! Splashtop rocks!! I am using it on my ipad though.. been waiting for the hd version to be released before i buy a tab 10.1 since remote desktop is just about all i use... looks like its time to buy one.
gonna try it and see

[Q] MHL and Emulators

Okay so I've seen plenty of videos on YouTube of the SGS2 playing N64 flawlessly on their bigscreen TVs with PhoneJoy and an MHL adapter, so I figured our EVO 3Ds should be able to handle it too... but so far that hasn't been the case for me.
Has anyone come up with a working configuration to get emulation to work without like 10frameskips?! I've tried multiple ROMs, kernels, overclocking, all sorts of different emulators... I can't even get simple SNES games to work well enough to be standable let alone N64. Tried all of yongzhs emulators but those are too outdated and don't work smoothly. Best experience I've had was with SuperGNES because its not a port it is android native, still have to give it about 4frameskips though which is much too choppy. Looking to get about 1-2 max. Any thoughts and ideas are most appreciated!
If u don't mind could u tell me what kind of games u want to emulate like n64 or perhaps gameboy games
But Well u can try gameboid for that games. it works pretty fine for me O(∩_∩)O

I dont know if it a Sense related problem or something, but any 1080p video lthat I play using MHL on a big screen is to much choppy and fps are too low....while the same videos works fine without MHL.
I really hope all this is resolved when ICS and sense 3.6 or 4.0 OTAs are released...

thats because most mhl adapters can only push 24hz making it look choppy. cannot say if the oem htc or samsung adapters are any better however i have heard that both image, sound and framerate are better.

I use samsungs MHL adapter for the 3D , it cannot play 1080p videos at optimal framerate.
This is exactly why they should have just stuck with a dedicated HDMI port... Not to mention USB host is pointless with a TV because the port is taken up for the video-out.

my kernel is pusing 1080p @ 120hz (so 3d works on the your hdmi big screen) - verified working by both gsm and cdma users.
*per my personal experience and that of users posted their feedback on my threads
issue: it only works for some, not others
not sure if its a cable issue or a phone/hardware limitation that only applies to some phones
i personally am using a samsung cable - its the only cable that works w/ my phone @ 120hz
I will try your Anthrax kernel to see if it makes a difference for me. I was on test06 last week but I decided I couldn't deal with my camera preview and landscape gallery not working. Do you have a newer kernel up now that i can go grab?
test is the latest - and hdmi/mhl on most 2.17 based roms is borked ... due to the gpu issues im working on (same issue that affects landscape video and camera preview - all related)

Android TV Boxes/Media Players

Hello,
In this thread, i want know something about all those "Chinese'' (or is there any original) Android TV Boxes and media players.
I saw on eBay some stuff. Looks well, too.
I want to buy one, becouse i'm big android fan, and i can't live without Android.
So, does anyone know some information which is better to use?
Just wait on the next version of Google TV.

I'm looking to Sony Google TV, it looks awesome, but price isn't very good, too. But is that good? Also, Logitech Google TV looks awesome, but which one? Or, maybe any chinese Google TV?
I have the Logictech Revue, its pretty cool. They say new boxes will be available this summer or fall.

I had both the Logitech Revue and a Geniatech ATV1000 (Android TV) and ended up selling the Revue because I liked the ATV 1000 better.
However the ATV 1000 does require a little bit of work to make it good but after updating to a newer firmware the box is awesome.
I mainly use it for streaming videos online and it supports a lot more video formats than the Revue did. I also had a lot of problems with Netflix on the Revue. I was constantly having to reset the box to make Netflix work again.

Thank you for information. Maybe i just have to buy apple TV? Don't know why i want it, but all reviews about Logitech Revue is bad. Or maybe any of those all Chinese Android TV's?

Hi, with the latest Ice Cream Sandwich update, did you manage to get YouTube working on the ATV1000? If so, how did you do it?
Thank you.

I actually prefer using it with Gingerbread (2.3.4) (firmware 20111102) I have the best luck with it and it is really stable.
Youtube works alright but sometimes when searching videos it times out and I have to hit the retry button. However my A500 and Nexus tablets occasionally have the same problem.
I mostly use the box for streaming online movies from Putlocker or Sockshare for this it works really well.
I hope this helps. Good luck

Best ROM for running XBMC only?

Hello!
I've stop using my Atrix since about 3 months ago, so I'm no longer in the game.
Any suggestions to what ROM should be used if one wanted to use XBMC only?
The phone will be constantly plugged in and will always have power. It would be great if the ROM supported video mirroring with hd playback and good decoding.
Any suggestions?
I've used it on both CM7 and CM10. Personally, I didn't notice a difference. I did not try playing anything as I've no media on my phone, but was able to load navi-x and stream stuff fine. It was slow, but I think that was due to it being in beta.
I'm not sure, but I don't remember seeing "Audio over HDMI" option in CM7... It's nice if you have a home theater and want sound coming from speaker system and not just the TV.
Edit: As a side note, it was a pain to work with the interface on such a small screen. Have you considered something like raspberry pi and selling/donating the Atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
well, I have considered selling it, but the digitizer has a dead stripe, so the phone doesn't really have any value. The raspberry pi is the next logical step if this doesn't work out!
When I retire my Atrix, I will most likely turn it into a pseudo laptop since I bought a lapdock. They're pretty cheap, have you considered that alternative?
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
I have a lapdock from the states, but I find it basically useless, since I haven't gotten swedish keyboard layout to work on it.

I have exactly the same scenario. I have an Atrix , unrooted, but the screen no longer works and its basically redundant. I have the smart dock and ideally would like too use it as a dedicated media player with xBMC and a remote, leaving it connected to my TV at all times.
Would appreciate it if you could share any success you have in setting this up.
Thanks!
any progress?
I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my atrix.
Have you had any success using yours as an xbmc machine or did you scrap it for a pi?
I would also like to make my atrix into a dedicated XBMC box. I have a HD dock and would like to use it with the remote. I attempted to install the newly released xbmc for android on a gingerbread rom (Neutrino). I got a message that xbmc is not compatible with my device. I assume that it can work with an ics or jb rom. It works on my galaxy nexus. Any suggestions on which one would have the best support for hdmi output and hd dock?
I have CM10 Epinter JB and xbmc works on my phone. I have to open my player first and then xbmc app.

[Question] Atrix as Mediastation with Media-Dock?

Hi Guys,
as I'm thinking of getting a new phone sooner or later, I was thinking how to use my Atrix and my Multimedia-Dock later on.
I never used the Lapdock mode or HDMI mirroring, but I bought the multimedia dock because it was really cheap and I can use my Atrix as a digital clock also.
So please forgive me if I'm asking questions that only work with the lapdock mode
My idea is:
I want to use the Atrix as a media-station for music (on storage and streaming).
As the multimedia dock as a 3,5mm line-out, I thought this might work. I'm on MIUI V5 with JB right now and just plugging in something in the 3,5mm line-out won't let me listen to any music, as I guess this line-out only works in lapdock-mode, because it will get the audio signal from HDMI (?).
I want to know if this might work with any rom that supports lapdock, because for the functions I want, I don't need the newest Android with the latest features.
Another function that would be awesome is to pair the Atrix via Bluetooth with other devices so the Atrix can play music via BT from other devices. Is this possible, too?
Like: Music on new phone --> BT --> Atrix connected to speakers plays music.
If there are any threats like this already, I'm really sorry, but a quick search didn't give me any results
Thanks!
P.s.: Can I put USB-storage on the multimedia dock when the Atrix is in lapdock mdoe?
Indeed, you need to go back to gb or atrics to fully use the hd dock.
You can connect any pendrive to those usb, phone will mount them.
Not sure about bt. Guess is possible

I recently received back an Atrix that I purchased on behalf of a friend sometime ago. I also figured it could perhaps be of use at the mother-in-laws when my son is there. I have another account with xda though it has been so long since I used the forum to post that I could not remember my username! So I just clicked to log in via G+. Its been great seeing that such an old (at least in terms of android developement) device has still got some very good support and excellent contributers. Before my Nexus4 I had a Galaxy S and that got flashed regular from the great work that goes on here.
It didn't take much reading to work out that Atrics looked as if it would suit my needs best for some simple internet use and perhaps media viewing on the Bravia the phone will be hooked to. I am hoping I may also find an XBMC build that will be stable enough to enhance the system! So today I found the time to get the basic Atrics 2.0 up and running, One or two little bugs too work out but am sure they will have been covered already. Installed FlashFox browser to make sure flash works without any hassles and just completed a rom backup and upgrade of the kernel to 14-02-05. The difference is noticeable straight away Krystian, good work.
I'll try to keep up with my project and how it goes. How is your project working out muhski?
Thanks again to just about everyone within this forum who has posted, I narrowed initial problems down quickly due to the very useful guides and information
setup restrictions
So I set up everything up nicely using the atrics ROM. Due to the TV and setup at the mother in laws, using the stereo out on the dock was not viable. This forced me to roll back to Nottatrix4g for a quick fix of using the HDMI to pass sound as well as audio. As a result I have a nice portable setup which will reside at the mother in laws for my son to use and perhaps his grandad too. I kept the ROM install as slim as possible without removing any functionality that may be required if we take the system on holiday for example. I installed several addons in xbmc and went through each to check the ones that wouldn't work easily for example asking for an external player, (the ones that did work easily all diverted to mxplayer). I added both Firefox and dolphin for flash based browsing, a couple of the games he plays on my Nexus 4 and an emulator to play the games I still have from the NES. The emulator is tied into wiimote for an easier experience for him although I would have preferred a more manageable pad but since that's as good as free.
So the the real test will start tomorrow, my main concern would be the system recovering from any crashes but up to now with the exception of xbmc occasionally closing, I have only had one issue with Bluetooth and the mouse showing paired but not. I deleted the db and that resolved the issue which I was unable to replicate.
So my experience would be to tell you if a similar project was looked at, check your hardware and see how the audio can connect best. If you can only do audio with HDMI stay on 2.x.x ROM, if you can stereo from the dock into the TV by RCA's or an amplifier you can use atrics ROM or a 2.x.x based ROM. Other than this you shouldn't need to spend too long finding a good use to a redundant Atrix.
The xbmc version came from xbmcandroid as the official xbmc does no longer support tegra² chips. If your reading this regarding a newer phone then the official version may suit you better.
Thanks to everyone who has made this possible I will try and name everyone and their apps in a review of the system in the hands of the young and the old in a week or two!

Did you ever get around to making the list of applications used in your media center build?
Also, does the remote control work with it?
