NewsSpot for Google Reader -[R]- 2013-02-01 -[U]- 2012-02-01 -[V]- 3.0 - Windows Phone 8 Apps and Games

NewsSpot for Google Reader was just released for Windows Phone 8.
This is the Windows Phone 8 update of my app NewsSpot, which is already quite some time available for WP7 (see this thread). Besides the features listed in the other post, NewsSpot for Windows Phone 8 adds the following:
Full lock screen integration with quick and detailed status as well as background image. All updating in the background.
Pin sharp live tiles including the new wide tile style
Fast app resume
New splash screen
All graphics now in high resolution
The usual bug fixes
You can download it here:

I'm looking forward to your feedback!
There is an add-supported version which is restricted to sync max. 200 unread and 50 starred articles, whereas the full version supports up to 1000 unread or starred articles. Additionaly the lock screen background is only available in the full version.

Issue with a live tile.
First of all great app!!! It's FAST and I found the ui is very user friendly. My only gripe right now is the live tile not updating correctly. I setup one group and it is currently saying I have 1000+ unread articles. And putting the live tile into "medium size" actually cuts off the logo. Other than that the app is awesome and is definitely my daily driver for news! Thanks!

Thanks! I'm glad you to hear like NewsSpot.
Yeah, the 1000+ is actually a limitation by the Google Reader API, since it reports the unread counts only up to this limit. There are ways to get around this limitation, but implementing it is awkward (you have to do one web request for every tile instead of getting all unread counts at once).
The cutoff is intended, as I think knowing the number is more important than seeing the logo Otherwise I would have to move the number or make the font smaller, which somehow breaks the default styling of the tiles.
Regards

is there any way for a google reader app to pre-download/fetch the full article so i can read it when i do not have a connection?
Thanks

I get this request indeed more often recently. Technically it should not be that difficult, since all the code is already in place for caching the article previews and their images. I will see what I can do

Any update?

Well, I'm currently involved in two other projects, so the next updates of NewsSpot might need some time to be released. However, I'm sure it will come this year.
Regards

As you will have already noticed, Google is shutting down its Reader service by the 1st of July. However, this does in no way mean NewsSpot will be retired, too. Please read our Statement to see what's next for NewsSpot.

It's been already a while that we released an update, so here are the news:
(WP8 only) Raised limit of number of synced articles to 2.000 for each starred and reading list
(WP8 only) Added share via QR-code
YouTube videos are started without using an external app
Improved sharing via phone services
Long hold an item in the article list to share it
Accelerated switching between articles
(WP8 only) Fixed bug: autosync on start works again
Happy reading!

[APP] Lolcats viewer - UPDATE 15/08/09

Just a little application I've been working on to get back into programming, using xml (it uses the rss feed from icanhascheezburger.com), some image processing (scaling mainly) and threading (to make the interface able respond and update while downloading).
This is the first functional release of this program, I think without any (major) bugs. The next releases will focus on cleaning up the code to the point where I can release the source for all to tinker with.
It's built for devices with the .NET Compact Framework 3.5, so if it doesn't work, make sure you have the right version of the compact framework installed.
Features:
- resolution independant, will work on all possible resolutions (even unconventional ones) because the interface is scaled (though there is not much of an interface).
- works on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices: swipe left/right to switch images and tap the image to open it with the native viewer (to zoom and/or save it to disk), or do the same with the hardware dpad left/right/enter.
Ofcourse, if you find any bugs, feel free to drop a message inhere.
UPDATES:
Version 1.0.1 now available for download!
Changes:
- New right softkey menu allows for updating the RSS feed and exiting
- Left softkey brings a random lolcat for you to laugh at
Great stuff now I can haz lolz on ma fone
hahaha great app
edit: a randomization would be nice ...
Definitely gonna grab this.
But what I have been wanting is an app that lets you create your own. Take a picture, caption it (with different font syles, and placements) and save it, or send it... or even reopen it and re-edit it.
I see way too many funny things in my daily travels, and wanna share it.
Screens would be nice.
nice tiny 14k app
the other day i came across a 250k app that just turns wifi on/off. kudos mate
rofl i always wondered where to get these picz, now i has da link
nice app, hilarious indeed
Great app!
I was going to point out a bug where the latest post wasnt showing in the app, but I checked and it seems that it's not in the rss feed so it's all good.
I'd love to see the source code, I'm working on an app which would really benefit from being able to swipe left and right between forms, and I'm interested in how the images are scaled. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to have a peek at it
Excellent idea!
Im am sorry in advance, but I just HAD to... ^Yº

Actually, I think I just had a brainwave - I'm going to play about with MouseUp and MouseDown and recording MousePositon to detect a gesture.
It worked, thanks for the inspiration
WOW Great idea I always wanted a wall mounted screen dedicated to lolcats, until that happens pocket size will do
Thanks all for the replies. I doubted if I should post this as I only made it as a test for myself, but now I'm glad I did. In the next few days I'll be cleaning up the code, and per request I'll add a random lolcat-function.
Oh, and StarMonkee: that's exactly what I did, when MouseDown is triggered I record the position, and when MouseUp is triggered I check the difference and if the difference is bigger than 20 (or something like that) I go to the next, if it's smaller than -20 I go to the previous. If it's in between those two the movement is not big enough and it's recognized as a tap. I'm not sure on if the values were 20 and -20, but it's something like that I think
Tank Yuz berry mush

thanks for this app, i effin LOVE lolcats....

UPDATE: neverming! You hyperlinked...
Pretty nice
I couldn't use it because a lot of tiles I have are not in the database. It is a really nice concept an I can only see it getting better.
Sorry, but this would be a nightmare for developers.
Even though I like it from a user point of view.

Hmm. Can you elaborate why is it a nightmare?
Live tiles are already a nightmare as MS brings more accent colors to the mix. You need to find colors that would look nice on all 20 (you are left with either white or black). If you make tiles shift colors like that, then they lose a lot of their usability, because info displayed on them will not be readable anymore under all circumstances, and developers can;t do squat about it.
This is why most apps don't use a live tile or if they do, they do not use dynamic backgrounds, which kinda nullify your theme as colors will be hard coded.
If your app has a live tile with a transparent background, meaning you are using the theme colour, you will be using white colour for your live tile info. I think this is pretty standard and every app is doing this. I dont think app developer skip the live tile due to trying to cater to theme colours, but rather they have no meaningful info to show. As long as you are using the standard white colour, you have nothing to worry about readability. The users will ensure the custom theme they use will allow them to read the live tile.
Just an update.
New Skinery update has been released
- Added Viber, Wikipedia, Social Scout, Facebook JDB, Alarms, Basic Calculator, Accounts, Location and Lockscreen apps.
More apps are coming online every week so do not get left out! Contact us to get your app integrated: [email protected]
They can always using a flip tile to chow info even with hard coded stuff.
The fact is, live tiles are a bit of a challenge for developers and many (trust me i am a developer myself) choose to skip this because it is way too tiresome for them. Take for instance CNN: it doesn't have a live tile when it has quite a lot of meaningful info to show.
I love the idea cause in IMO the start screen really sucks as far as looks go. It need a settings menu though for more options like deleting and whatnot. Not that in a Dev or anything. Nice app though.
Amazing app!

Skinery Tiles Pro, the highly popular custom theme app featured by Nokia, has been updated to version 3.04 with brand new features, apps and skins. In this release, you can now create, skin and pin shortcuts to your favourite websites or simply create blank tiles to add some text like a smiley face. Also included is the new and powerful skin editor which lets you choose different colours or images for each of your tiles. Experiment and have fun coming up with unique design for your start screen. Once you are done, tap on the share button to show off your creation to the Windows Phone community!
As with every update, Skinery adds new apps and skins. Can you spot the new apps in the screenshots? If not, check out the store link to find out the new apps!

[APP] Playlist Tiler

This simple but very handy app will allow you to create colorful tiles for the music playlists, using the albums art or your own graphics.
The app also supports NFC tags so you may automate some actions (like all tracks playback) in your car. Unfortunately, currently Microsoft has a limitation (damn stupid limitation but it's MS!) - NFC tags can't be processed with locked screen or screen off. Hope, MS will remove this in the WP 8.1 release!

Please review and rate the app. Don't leave negative feedbacks - tell me here what's wrong and I'll try to fix it as soon as I can!
App received update (I've fixed some bugs).
P.S. Hey guys, do you have app reviews/requests? Actually, I'm kinda disappointed because of silence here; looks like nobody (except me) uses a playlists to listen music...
it's not your fault, but the music app for wp is awful, thousands of topics all over the web about wp playlist's problems...
if ms decently update music app I'm sure people will start using your app...
have you done some "marketing" on wpcentral?

This app can work for WP7 too - I'm using good old XNA API to work with playlists. And - since WP7 launch - playlists has a lack of pictured tiles, they are always looks the same, very hard to handle...
I don't care about playlist tiles before upgrading to WP8.1: after BT connection to my Nissan Altima, system player starts playing all songs in random order. But MS changed the behavior, now it's silent. What's why I wrote this app.
BTW, people already started using my app - store has no analogues at all.

I've created the app announcement at the "developer spotlight" forum, exactly like here And the app is free (at least for now) so it's not a "pure marketing".

sorry I didn't mean that none is using your app, I think is a useful and good app but only two weeks ago creating/modifing a playlist on wp was a pain in the a** so not many users used playlist, but I repeat is a very good app :good:
What do you mean by "creating a playlist was a pain"? Have you ever tried to create a playlist(s) on PC, via standard Windows explorer? It's an easy as a pie - select folder(s), rightclick, choose "Create playlist", rename it - thats all. I was really surprised how easy it is!..
Currently, MS don't provide any API to access playlists created by new music hub And playlist format (probably) changed; now playlists are stored to internal database, not an external files (like an old way). I don't understand one thing - why we need these "improvements"?
Playlist Tiler got an update. Some bugs are fixed, speed and playlist shuffle improved. Unfortunately I don't have enough time to implement good wide tiles, will try to bring 'em in the next update.
App will remain free; I've only added purchase option for NFC tag writing. However if you wanna support my development, buy this option (just $0.99) like a donation

[APP] The most accurate fitness tracking app for Android Wear!

We are Ken and Houtan, two developers building a personal trainer AI for wearables. Over the past year we've built out tech that can automatically recognize a user's exercises, like bench presses and squats, if they are wearing an Android Wear smart watch. We are launching the beta program for our app, YouMove, and are inviting members of the XDA community to join. We would love your comments and feedback on what we've done and would be thrilled to hear your suggestions on what we should do next!
Apply for the Beta!
We recently added the ability for the app to learn new user exercises, which we are really excited about!
Other features we are currently testing:
- Automatic, passive recognition of weight training, calisthenics and cardio exercises
- Tracking of exercises, reps, sets, resting times, calorie counts, and intensity
- Detailed display of a user's workout in a timeline on watch and phone
We know the XDA community can provide some great feedback on what we've made so far. Thanks everyone!

This looks really cool! I've been tracking my workouts using Google Sheets for a while now, but if this works, I could totally see it replacing that. I'll let you know more of my thoughts after I sign up for the beta and try it out a bit, but I was just wondering if there is a way to see your progress by exercise type in some place on the app. I've always roughly guessed how I've improved over time at, say, bench press, and I know that I can do it now if I really wanted to, but it'd be really cool to have it readily available on the app.
Looks interesting, may take it for a spin!
Where is the link for download? Also:
1. Will you be having only dark color for the app?
2. Does it support Android Wear independently without the need of the phone?
2.1. Does it support the internal GPS of Sony Smartwatch, for instance?

Current it is a closed beta, so once you apply we will send an email with a link.
1. We are switching to a lighter color UI on the phone. Sticking to a dark color on watch to conserve battery life.
2. Yes, it works on the watch independently of the phone.
3. At this point it doesn't support GPS. Right now we are primarily focused on weight training and calisthenics. But when we do hit cardio, we'll make sure to use GPS on the watch.
I'm interested in trying this out. How's progress on the app?
Link not working
I would love to participate but the link is not working
I would like to apply for the beta but the link is not working.
I mostly go sporting/gym 3 times a week.
Can i get a beta because i was searching for this kinda app ?
Thanks !

My Top 3 ColorOS 12 Customization Features

As I mentioned here before, I was lucky enough to be on the first wave of updates for my FInd X3 Pro, and as promised I'll share more insights with you!
Ok just to clarify, its my personal view based on my own usage. Always happy to see other's opinion aw.
+++++++
When I’ve updated my Find X3 Pro to ColorOS12 Beta Version, I couldn’t wait any longer to get hands-on new customization features. This time there is much more to experience compared to ColorOS 11 launch, so without further ado, I’m going through my personal TOP 3 Customization features on ColorOS 12:
Top 1: Omoji
The feature uses a face capture algorithm to scan around 75 detail points of your face moves to create a sleek personalized emoji. I find that personalized emojis itself are nothing new, we know it from other apps already, but it’s definitely a highlight to send your face mimic in funny ways instead of boring messages. Next to this I tried Omoji as profile pic, on my AOD, and sent it via messenger & nearby share.
Honestly, it's a lot of fun to try out different styles, and save several characters for different types of usage.

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Top 2: Wallpaper Based Theme Settings
One of my favorite “customization spots”, the personalization tab, also got an upgrade.
As a key highlight of Android 12 (Material You), ColorOS made its own version of it. Wallpaper color picking allows you to create a color matched theme by picking the colors based on your wallpaper, the system will adopt the whole theme based on your selection.
Spoiler: It’s amazing if you’re into customization and gives you endless options!
Top 3: AOD 2.0
Personally, I still find it pretty satisfying to create kaleidoscope patterns for AOD, and luckily this feature is included in the new AOD 2.0 interface along with a bunch of new custom options. AOD 2.0 allows you to pick your selfie and transform it into a portrait silhouette, or add your personal Omoji to be displayed, both definitely brings that sketchy and unique look to your AOD.
I tried both, and will probably stick with my Omoji option.
These are my personal Top 3 Customization favorites on ColorOS 12.
As you know, there are plenty of more customizations to mention, such as Edge lighting, Fingerprint animation, darkmode setups and so on For those who are on ColorOS 12, what are your top 3?
I think you posted in the wrong forum buddy haha. We don't have coloros 12 on our find x2 pro yet, but when it comes out I'll come back to say my thoughts.
