[Q] 7+ inch tablet which can be used as a phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my big disappointments with the Nexus 7 is that it can't be used as a phone (meaning GSM, not data/wifi-based).
As of now, it seems to me the best tablet which can be used as a phone is still the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 (assuming the Note 10.1 is too big to carry around, personal preference, that). Of course, that one looks like it's never getting JB or any other updates from Samsung (so much for the 1 and a half year pledge...).
Any other recommendations? Seen rumours of a 7 or 7.7-inch note, that would fit the bill assuming I can afford it.

well i think that any you find with celluar service is going to be data only, which would suck for calls. i think right now the note is still the best bet.

Really, only Samsung makes tablets with gsm? Note and note 2 is just a bit too small to be a hybrid device for me, would still need my galaxy tab 10.1 for music sheets etc that way...

Considered that but resolution of the display seems quite pitiful, really a budget device. Would prefer the 7.7. No non-Samsung possibilities?

SGS II or SGS III?

I am in the market for a new phone. I like the SGS II alot. Also its cheaper but older tech. SGS III seemed nice and better screen and new tech. I could go either way but I am not sure.
What you guys think I should buy?

Do you think you can hold that rubbish design of S III, regardless of it's specs? If yes then go on. Otherwise none of them seem the right option now, but One X.
Will suggest you s3 if you want to be futureproof and development
S3 is the ultimate phone and will be one of the best Sellers for 2012. You can't go wrong with it. Perfect design. Analyst say curvy is the new
Trend.

I got the SGS2 at the moment and i am going to upgrade to the SGS3 provided the phone companies here will stock the 64 Gig version. Otherwise I am not really interested.

In the Uk, the 32gb version from Vodafone cost £90 more in deposit. I'd rather buy a 64gb xdhc card for about £60 from Ebay.that's better than buying 16gb more for £90

I got the 16 gig in my SGS2 and a 32 gig card in it already. So I know 16 gig on the phone is not going to cut it. My plan is to go for at 64 gig phone and then a 64 gig SD card on top of that just becaues I am storageaholic.
That way I can carry most of my things with me to work, where I will need them. My SGS2 is my computer away from home, so extra storage means I can reduce the amount of USB drives and what not I have to carry.

I like the S3, but i have the S2 for 2 months and i love it. I don't really like the shape and the design of the S3 but the phone itself is amazing. Samsung kicked Apple with the S3, but most people will buy the iPhone 4S because it's fancy.

I see you're using a nexus one so you're looking for a new phone. Obviously the choice between the 2 will be the Galaxy S3 unless you want to spend less. At this point, why would someone get the s2 when they can get the s3? S2 is a fine phone but s3 has everything and does everything better that's a fact. For example I would definitely recommend someone to get the galaxy nexus over the nexus s even though the nexus s is a great device.

Its a successor to the sgs2 of course it will be BETTER,NEWER,FASTER,SEXIER,SMARTER,...etc device...!!!
So go for the BETTER,NEWER,FASTER,SEXIER,SMARTER,...etc device... and buy the sgs3..... because its BETTER,NEWER,FASTER,SEXIER,SMARTER,...etc device...!!!
well honestly i laughed holding my stomach (in fact i am now)at this question when i first read it.
Well I'm in the same situation as you
I'm in LOVE with the GSII as it has a stylish design, a good performance and acceptable price
but in exchange GSIII has better graphics, better performance, better interface and higher tech but much higher price
Some times I say that I can achieve most of the advantages of GSIII by installing the new developed ICS and I'll have a good result too in GSII
I'm really confused and didn't make my decision yet

Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus?

Hello, I just recently got offered an almost brand new Galaxy Note for my Galaxy Nexus. How do you guys feel about the phone? I really am intrigued about the fact that the display is so large and how high the ppi is. Do you have an regrets about it or wish you bought another phone? Would you trade your Note for the Galaxy Nexus? Please leave a comment below!

I definitely would, but my conract doesn't end for another year :crying: What do you think about your Note? Would you give it up for a Galaxy Nexus, or keep it? Also, how good is the development for this phone. I know it won't be as good as the Nexus.
Depends on what you value more. Screen is amazing on the note, and we have some great development going on. Now that I own both phones, its really a tossup between which phone I would pick if I had to choose one. I would probably pick my note purely for the screen.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
If you're anything like most Note users, the screen size alone will pull you towards the Note.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
[Lady]: "How do you carry that huge phone in your pocket?"
[Note User]: "I'm used to having huge stuff in my pants"
I had the galaxy nexus once ....I liked it alot..but the note is faster and bigger, and development is taking off now....so we have good developers now...good communityas well...I would trade it in second...
It really depends on what you value. If you want to run stock, get a nexus. If you want to play around with roms and don't mind running into a few bugs, the hardware on the international note blows the nexus away. The nexus is a smartphone, the more note is a super phone. I've owned both, fyi, and I wouldn't trade my note for the world, but I did like how every single rom on the gnex was flawless. Screen did feel a little small, though.
I think it comes down to if you want a 1 handed device or if you don't mind using 2 hands.
Apple innovates and Samsung copies, huh? Tell that to my galaxy note

The screen size won't be a problem. I'm 6'2 and still growing so my hands are abnormally large lol. Thank you all for your input! I'm going to meet the guy tomorrow and test it. If I buy it, I'll let you guys know! I can't wait for paranoid android on this phone! I love it on my Nexus, but it seems a little cramped on the screen. I'm sure the Note will take care of that

Note! Note! Note! Note! Note! Note!
So in the past 6 months I've had the Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, and the Note. I bought the HOX when my Nexus went in for service, then traded it straight up for the Note as it has always interested me (I'm a former Dell Streak user). Here are my thoughts on all three...
Hardware
- Overall build quality goes to the HOX, no questions asked. I think the Nexus and Note are very similar since they're both made by Samsung. I love the screen on the Note the best, followed by the HOX and then the Nexus. As far as real-world performance goes, I think they're all very similar. The Note and Nexus both have removable batteries, which I have found to be VERY useful, especially for the Note given it's screen size and therefore power consumption.
Software
- As someone who always runs some sort of custom rom I have to give this one to the Nexus. The Note and HOX tie for second. There is certainly plenty of stuff out there, but there is usually some sort of trade-off i.e. the stock samsung app for the s-pen won't work on custom roms AFAIK.
Overall it comes down to... the screen! I personally miss my Nexus and am selling my Note this week. If you primarily only have a phone on you and do a lot of reading (email, web browsing, etc) the Note can't be beat. I often have my laptop or Nexus tablet so I use either of those when needed. Keep in mind that they're both 1 year old devices and the Nexus will age much better than the Note IMO. I would consider waiting until after the Note 2 is out and prices drop a bit more, but you can't go wrong with either device.
I own both. I use my nexus more. Nexus=better software
Note=bigger screen.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Don't get me wrong, the software on the Note is great, but the nexus is flawless. I wish it was possible to combine the software side of my nexus with my Notes screen. That being said, I'm still in the honeymoon phase of owning my nexus, and JB on the note will soon be every bit as good as the nexus...and that's without us even having JB source. Our note devs are awesome.

Consolidating Devices: From a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7 to a Galaxy Note II

Just picked up my Note II yesterday after a long debate between it and the DNA. Decided to go with the Note II cause I already feel like my Nexus 7 16GB was a mistake. Bought the Nexus 7 in August, but I could barely fit anything on it and ended up using my Galaxy Nexus more still for the past months. Used my Nexus 7 at school often for eBooks, but never really felt like taking it anywhere else.
The Nexus 7 was smaller than my iPad 2 that I sold earlier this year, but still felt like a pain to carry and the storage limit and lack of data connectivity was more of a pain than I thought. I really wanted a 1080P screen in my next phone, but depending on the viewing distance it wouldn't matter anyway... also don't really care for Sense or non removable batteries or SD cards, so decided to pass on the DNA and get the Note II.
Had the Galaxy Nexus 32GB since this time last year, and said I didn't need a new phone this year, but figured I'd give the Note II a try after hearing rave reviews since I could return it if I didn't like it. So far everything has been good. Got a 32GB SD card to put in it, and I copied everything from the Nexus to the card so I could have all my stuff.
On the Galaxy Nexus, no matter what I did, the screen used most of the battery life. I could barely get 2 hours screen on time out of the Nexus with exteneded battery and with my apps installed. Installed mostly the same apps on stock Galaxy Note, and so far I have 2 hours screen on time with 64% left while tethering and playing music on the phone's speaker... just getting insane battery life compared to the Nexus to the point where I'm shocked at how good it is.
The phone definitely feels faster than the Galaxy Nexus even with all the bloatware still installed, so I think I'm gonna keep it especially since the bootloader will be easily unlocked soon. I can't wait to see some TouchWIZ ROM's or more AOSP-like stuff like Paranoid Android to take advantage of the huge screen by modifying the DPI.
My hands are small, so using it one-handed is harder then the Galaxy Nexus, but it's not completely impossible... just taking some time getting used to. The phone's build quality is amazing even though it is plastic also. The plastic looks nice in grey, and it doesn't feel as slippery as the Galaxy Nexus even though it looks like it would be. Makes it easier to hold the phone than I thought it would... Some people say the plastic seems cheap, but to me it reminds me of Oakley sunglass plastic... feels very light and durable... definitely not the same as cheap $10 sunglasses. I haven't even had the phone for 24 hours, but I'm falling in love already.
I will probably keep it and keep my Galaxy Nexus as a backup since I'm new to Verizon and have no spare phone. I will probably sell my Nexus 7 tho since the Note II's resolution, battery life, and screen size are comparable with the bonus of 4G LTE and phone calls. The screen looks more crisp than the Nexus 7, the colors are better, and it fits in my pocket so it will never get left at home.
Anyone else coming from the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, or both, and in awe of the note?
How is the signal strength on the Note II? I have a GNexus right now and swore I would never buy another Samsung due to the poor data connections I have experienced with the GNexus.
The Note II does look like a great device. Just need to make sure I can get mobile data when I am away from WiFi.

signal strength is very good with the note 2.. I have 4 out of 5 bars in my room(hardest place for me to get a connection)... With my Tbolt and rezound they averaged 2 bars.
I came from a galaxy nexus. I'm not looking back. This phone will be a lot of fun now that we are unlocked.

I'm coming from much the same situation and am trying to decide if I should keep my 7. I love getting updates on time so I will probably sell my gnex and keep the 7. But I do find myself on the couch picking up my note and not the 7. Hmmm...

I'm keeping my 7. Once the newness wears off I'm sure I'll want that slightly larger screen for reading and such at home. I won't be lugging the 7 around while out anymore though. No need because the Note 2 is the perfect hybrid.
I sold my Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Nexus. I don't miss either one. I might be in the market for a Galaxy tab 10.1 though. 7 inch screens seem pointless to me now. I should also note, that I used my Nexus 7 primarily for movies and games, which I find that the note 2 is better at doing both.

I played with one at the verizon store and it and my rezound were sitting @ -90dbm. Adrenalyne states that signal is better than the galaxy nexus.
I really wanted a tablet for school but I have no money. My dad gave me his old acer a500. It works ok for my meads but not as well as I had hoped so I actually ended out using my s3 more often. Now with the note I get double the functionality. Much better in my case.

This is nearly me too. Selling the 7 paid a contract fee for the Note and I just like it a lot more. The 7 is a great device, but if I'm not using my Note I want more real estate. For me that's an iPad 3 as larger android tablets have never blown me away. The nexus 10 would probably make a decent sidekick.
Same here still have the other two though (nexus7 galaxy nexus). Keeping them as backups but haven't used them since I got my Note 2.

I had the nexus which is what my wife is using now. But I never had data issues on it. Debating between a tab or note 10.1....or an Asus transformer
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
At my horrible signal apartment (we really need a new tower out here), the galaxy nexus hangs around -120 dbm while the Note 2 is about 104 dbm. Also I can actually walk away from windows on the phone without dropping calls again, which would happen with the nexus. We're going to call that a great improvement!
I never noticed abnormally bad signal on my Nexus, but that is probably because I was coming for a carrier that has less reception where I live. It seems like the Note II does get better reception tho, and that could definitely play into the the better battery life I am experiencing.
I'm pretty sure at this point I'm going to sell the Nexus 7 and just use the note as my primary. They both have almost the same resolution (1280x720 vs 800), but the Note II has better colors, faster processor, more ram, and more memory. Note II also has better cameras, more features, and can fit in my pocket.
I used to only like stock Android... didn't like TouchWIZ on my original Galaxy S which drove me to learn how to install ROMs, but now I feel like TouchWIZ is way better and actually brings a lot to the table. My previous two phones were the Nexus S and Galaxy S, so I will miss AOSP a little bit, but not much since there are a lot of useful features for power users that don't slow down the phone now.
Sony vaio duo 11 is a nice hybrid... I love my note2 but it can't replace a computer or tablet with clients. I haven't done much with it since it's mainly for work but it has great performance so far for a decent price
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I don't have a Nexus 7 but I have a TF700T. I have not pulled out my tablet since I got my Note II. Not sure if that is a bad or good thing. I can't sell it because it was a Father's Day gift and the wife would be upset.
Just sold my 7 and nexus phone. Love the note 2. Best phone i have ever had.

[Q] Nexus 7 AND Nexus 10 OR Note 10.1

Hello Android forums,
I am looking for a tablet to replace my aging Prestigio tablet, and there are 2 options that I have narrowed it down to; they are the Nexus 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
I start Sixth Form in September and so the Note 10.1 would be useful for me to jot down quick notes and ideas, but is it worth paying £499 when the only benefit is the S-Pen. The price difference between the Note 10.1 and Nexus 10 is approximately £180 which means that I would buy a 16GB Nexus 7 with the money and take that to school with me. So is it worth paying £180 more for tainted Android but the S Pen or should I get a Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 with approximately £20 left over to purchase student stuff?
Many Thanks
AdvancedNothing
If you're willing to spend that much money go for the Note, it's note-taking abilities are undefeated. It's so satisying to use.
Do not buy two devices, you'll regret it because it's overkill. I would suggest a Nexus 7 if you're going to take it with you to college. It's ultra portable and stock Android is faster and more fluid. There is quite the selection of note-taking apps, so check the Play Store for one that fits your needs and go for the Nexus 7. If not, go for the Note. They're both a good choice.

Hi Robin2,
Thanks for the reply!
That was my initial instinct, that note taking would be easier with the note because after using my friends Note 2 and S Pen, I loved it and loved how easy it is to use. My brother has a N7 and as far as I know, he loves it, but are you saying that there is no reason to get a Nexus 10? Because if I were to get an N10, I would not get a new laptop and just use a tablet for my web browsing needs and take the N7 to college with me.
Thanks

My brother has a N7 and as far as I know, he loves it, but are you saying that there is no reason to get a Nexus 10? Because if I were to get an N10, I would not get a new laptop and just use a tablet for my web browsing needs and take the N7 to college with me.
Thanks

It's a great device really, but IMO it's just not worth getting both a Nexus 7 & 10. You will end up using one of them most of the time. The N7 is comfortable to use for a really long time, whereas the N10 gets quite heavy after using it for a while. So I can imagine you would want to pick up the N7 more often, because it's just so portable. But really, the screen and performance are great on the N10.. better than the N7. So if you're OK with having both, but not using one of them that often - go and get yourself a N7 and N10.

Ah, I thought there was some major technical oversight with the N10 that rendered it useless (apart from the screen that has such a high pixel density that it's almost impossible to hit a small button) I think that I would prefer Nexus devices because my last altercation with Android was ruined by 2 things - the lack of updates and the bloatware - not an issue with a nexus!
Yes software is often more important than hardware. I believe Android 5.0 is confirmed for the Note, but it could take a while for Samsung to actually release it.

But saying that, Jelly Bean 4.1 was confirmed for my Ace Plus, and we are still waiting. It was the lengthy wait and wondering if we were going to get updates teamed with the fact that we never did and also all of the bloatware that made me purchase a Nokia Lumia 800 because I knew I would prefer WP7.5 to Gingerbread instantly
I think I will go for the N7 and 10, and I am certain that when my contract expires in May, I will get whatever nexus phone is available, just to give droid another try and also to complete my nexus set
Thanks for your help, Robin2

Personnally I would not get 2 devices, one would just be lying around somewhere, collecting dust.

Not with me, I would have my N7 in my bag and use that while I was at college and then have my N10 for when I am at home, that way, both devices get used!

MEGA & Samsung Competitor Evaluation

First about me: I have been using a GT-P6200L Galaxy Tab 7+ GSM, HSPA+ as my primary device. Yes, I carry a 7" tablet with a built-in phone and have been doing it for over a year. People have looked at me like I have 2 heads. But I was clearly ahead of my time with large Phablets are concerned.
I just spent a while in my local AT&T store evaluating a few Samsung products. I was interested in the MEGA as it is still big but more manageable than my Tab.
Certainly the MEGA is a great size but it DOES lag. Even my P6200 upgraded to Jelly Bean, does not lag. It is not the quickest machine on the planet but it is smooth and quick.
I then examined both the Note II and III. The 3 is certainly nice, especially the screen. The Note II seems like the value proposition. But it is simply NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH. Sure, it is high resolution and Amoled but it is DIM vs. other machines. And after using a 7" Tab and contemplating the MEGA, the Note is simply too small.
AT&T has a very nice 7" Tab 3 but you cannot have a phone in it. I can buy an international version with a phone, but NO LTE.
I like the LG Optimus Pro, but I already bought one for my wife and it is also too small.
I guess I'll stick with my 7" Tab+ until they make a 6"+ LTE phablet. Hurry up already!

I also have been carrying a 7" phone around for nearly 2 years - original GTab P1000. I decided it was time to get something "up to date" - since I was never going to get a working Android 4.x on the GTab. After experiencing Samsung abandoning the P1000, & didn't want to get an "end of life" device, which counted the GTab 2 out for me. Going to a smaller screen concerned me - that eventually counted the Note 2 out. I decided to go for the Mega 6.3 ...
... I have absolutely no regrets. I have no lag on the device, its quick & smooth, & pretty much a perfect size. Screen is large enough to be usable, but the device is small enough to comfortably fit in a pocket, or on a belt clip. One of the best purchases I have made
Did you check to see if they offer the 7" Tab 3 in Australia? ?? If so... theres your LTE...But..does the Tab 3 have a flash for the camera??? I dont think it does.. I like my large screen phablets with flash....
I still rock the crap out of my GT p6800..
Non LTE.. but H+ speeds with ATT -US...gets 7-8 d/l mps on slow traffic...

Coming from an S2/Note 1/4g but no voice 7.0+ combo on T-Mobile, I wanted one device but kind of ran into similar problems. Neither the international voice Tab 3, Note 2, nor Mega gave me everything I really wanted- decent camera (out with the Tab), LTE (out with the Tab again!), decent price (no new Note 2 or Mega), a bigger screen than my Note 1 (still think the 2 feels smaller), and pentaband hspa (no Tab, Mega), and enough accessories (out with all but the Note 2). I considered a 6200 for easy sim swapping with my S2 (to keep a compact alternative) but didn't want to deal with the proprietary charger any more. Also, those tablets still cost a LOT!!!
I ended up compromising more than I wanted with a really clean, $325 T-Mobile Note 2. I like the phone, it seems to have fantastic battery life so far, and it's more pocketable than my original Note but I still want something bigger. I'll probably keep my 7.0+ as a home device or getting a voice enabled Tab 3 7" or 8" down the road to go with the new Note. Hell, I'm not even carrying THAT yet because I messed up putting my first screen protector ever on it.
The MEGA would be just fine with a faster processor, 1080p screen and Gorilla Glass. Is that too much to ask? I'll be sticking with my smooth as silk, nicely screened Tab 7+. But I'm looking for the next device...
