[Q] Please help with question can not figure this out for the life of me! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Please help i have beanstown build 5 installed with the ad blocker the host file. It has blocked a few of my websites i need for work such as
clickbooth.com
w4.com when you go to login
and maxbounty.com
i am sure this is just a few. I have found host file but i have no idea how to edit this or correct the probelm without just deleting the file which would leave me vulnerable correct?
Can someone help and walk me thru how to correct this issue as i have never dealt with this type of thing before
Thank you very much and it will be appreciated.

I believe you can just delete it. Here is what I did
1. did not install the host file (or you can just delete it)
2. download and install adblock PLUS from adblock developer
3. activate it when I visit a page with lots of ads and turn it off when you need to use those redirect pages

I can not do that because i use dolphin for Last pass accessibility. That ad block plus only works for firefox.
Any other ideas?

[Q] Browser: Download without streaming?

Is there a way to download things via the browser without it trying to stream it instead?
EDIT:
Found it at precentral from a guy names d-tester 2
http://forums.precentral.net/webos-...touchpad-browser-download-instead-stream.html
I believe there is a patch for that. Preware is your friend.

I downloaded the download link patch and I click touch and hold and hit download and nothing
Same problem and quite surprised more people haven't mentioned it since it's a huge issue. Patch installed ok, and the option appears but doesn't do anything. Anyone managed to sort this problem out??
do you know the name of the patch?
EDIT:
Available packages > Patch > Browser > Add Download Link option
wasn't rocket science
Yes thats the patch that im talking about...doesnt do anything..i clicked it and stared at it and nothing...give me a few and let me find the patch that does work...you can install it straight from you TP..no need to go to comp and webos quick install it.

Shakes_aqua put the following lines in your build.prop file and see if that helps.
net.dns1=8.8.8.8
net.dns2=8.8.4.4
Reboot after adding these.

I've had a similar issue, and in my case this resolved it...through some googling i found out that the browsers are automatically being proxied to an unknown host and that caused this problem..What you could do is Install this App...APL DEMO from Google Play..
Run the App..Enter a URL like : "google" please put it in a URL format
You would see an option "Test : Get URL" choose that
you would see that some traffic is generated and you will be able to send a request to google.
After you do that..choose the Edit option
and leave the Host name blank
and also the Port blank and Save the settings.
After this is done Choose the option Test : Open URL in new window
Try putting in a URL and now your Browsers should work just fine.

Can you access the same sites via wifi? Have you installed any kind of ad blocker programs or modified the hosts file?
I have addfree installed by a friend at work (old workplace...) I could not find the hhosts file on my service though (it is rooted) is there a way to reset it?

There should be an option in the ad free app to restore the hosts files. If not, then use a root explorer and browse to /system/etc and delete the hosts file and reboot. Should be back up after that.

Host file edit not blocking reddit properly

Hi thanks so much in advance for your help.
My phone is a Moto z2 play
So I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone with the intention of blocking sites that make me unproductive; all as part of a new year's resolution. I used Magisk too root and am able to use ES file explorer to edit the host file and I've put in different lines '127.0.0.1 "website name"' in order to block all the sites that make me unproductive. This however doesn't work well for reddit.
What I'm seeing is that if I enter reddit.com in my url I'll be blocked. But if I am linked to reddit via google then it'll circumvent the block and I'll have access. From here on I can change the url to any subreddit and access it and the block doesn't work.
I've tried blocking with the prefixes www, m., https:// etc. it still doesn't block google links. Do any of you know what I can do to fix this?
Thanks again!

you need Downloader Browser-Plugin 1.0
Have the same problem with my new "Vodafone TV" box and couldn't find any solution in the internet. Tried loading the browser plugin suggested above but same error message! The downloader app just simply won't connect to the net, period!!!
So, anyone has a solution, or as the op said, can anyone suggest an alternative?
Pitching in, as I'm a new Shield user with the same issue. Here's the page from AFTnews explaining the issue and the work-around; includes an installation video.
aftvnews.com/browser-plugin-now-available-for-downloader-app-on-android-tv
In short, browser capability had to be removed from the Google Play version so the app could remain in the store. The dev provides an APK at browser.aftvnews.com to add the capability back in. Should be the same APK as rainman74 linked to above (Downloader-Browser-Plugin-v1.0.apk).
However, the AFTnews' recommended action of pointing the Download app's browser to browser.aftvnews.com did not work for me; I received the same web access error message from Downloader.
To get around this, I loaded another web browser (Puffin for Android TV), entered the browser.aftvnews.com URL, and Puffin downloaded the APK. I needed to relaunch Puffin, then select the APK from Puffin's download list to install. Once installed, Downloader was able to access the web.
Hope this helps.

So what do you actually enter at the Downloader http:|| screen?
Good question. I may not have been clear, but I was not able to download the patch APK through the Download application.
Instead, I installed another web browser application (Puffin TV, available in the Android TV's play store) and put the browser.aftvnews.com URL in there. When the Puffin TV web browser loaded the URL, it automatically downloaded the APK from the site.
Once the APK was downloaded, I returned to Puffin TV's main menu and selected the file from the download list. When I selected the APK, it installed the APK to patch Downloader. After that, the Downloader app was able to again access the Internet through its browser.
Note: if you are installing Puffin TV to install the APK, you will need to tell your device to allow Puffin TV to install APK's. By default, Android doesn't grant permission for applications to install APK's. That's OK; you can do so under settings and my guess is your device will tell you how to do so.
