[Q] everything gone wrong at once - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Thunderbolt has just decided to completely crash at once and I was wondering if anyone here knew of any possible solution.
The charging port on my phone has broken so I cannot charge it or connect it to my computer. I took it in to Verizon to get it replaced and was told to put the factory rom back before they would replace it.
I didn't think that would be a problem until about 20 minutes later when my phone stopped reading my memory card. I have tried several different memory cards so I am sure it is my phone broken, not the card.
While at the Verizon store, the CS rep gave me another Thunderbolt to use to charge my battery with until I could get a replacement (I found this very strange) so I am able to at least charge my phone for now.
any ideas here?

Yea don't ever take a phone into a Verizon store and expect to get any real help. You're better off calling it in over the phone and letting them figure it out later than dealing with the retards at the stores. They know nothing most of the time and are a huge hassle.

He was actually very helpful. I just went in today to talk to the same guy and found out he doesn't work at that store anymore. He is the regional manager now

Honestly, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is stick the memory card in a computer by putting it in an adapter or SD slot if your computer has one and then reformat it to FAT32. If your computer reads it, save your pics and videos first to the computer so that you'll have them. I had this problem before and it just happened in my back pocket. I'll never know what happened. Anyways... since you're rooted and everything is already installed to your phone, it won't hurt your phone at all by reformating the SD entirely via computer. Remember, if the computer will read it, its not a memory card issue... normally its a format issue and the phone reading it.
Once your SD is newly formatted, put it back in and immediately backup your ROM just in case.
You shouldn't have any further issues with it.
Proceed with the unrooting process. All those files that existed would pretty much needed to have been deleted anyways.

Roflmao. Still though. It is easier to deal with customer service when you return a rooted device because they don't get to see until after you get the new device so you have a chance to unroot before they know you're rooted.

[Q] Sending Back Under Warranty - Best way to Stock and Wipe

I was using the latest DOW 14, ended up with the dreaded internal sd card not mounting. stl10 error!
Anyway, sending it back, but I don't have anyway of wiping the internal sd card. Is there something I can do to mount it to my pc like a USB drive.

Try downloading Odin, and the stock image Do you know how to get into download mode on your phone? do a search for the "no brick" odin image, then go into download mode, load odin, flash it, then flash the stock odin image, and you should be good to go. The great thing about this phone is its almost impossible to brick. You can email me if you have any [email protected]

What I did was I went to settings, sd and phone storage, then formated phone storage. That worked for me

Thanks for the reply. I've odined back to stock, no good. The only thing that gets my phone remotely working is Eugene's Froyo no Brick.
I can't mouth the phone's storage. There must be a work around thru the pc, BUT MY PHONE WON"T MOUNT TO PC EITHER. AND YES I HAVE THE RIGHT DRIVERS.
May be there's a voodoo rom that can be applied through odin. I know that voodoo recovery has some mount options.

If my previos reply does not work, try connecting your vib to your pc, select usb connect and then you should get 2 options of drives, 1 for the external, and 1 for the internal sd

I am sending my phone back and I am sure I am having the same problem as you are. Got my phone today thank god! So if it wont boot up T-Mobile cant see what you have done with it. They don't go and look what you have done they just use what parts they can and ditch the rest. I rooted and flashed CyanogenMod on my Mytouch 3g and the screen went out. I got a replacement under warranty then sent the phone back as is. Not one problem from T-Mobile. So just send it back and don't worry about what is on it.

I would not bank on that, I am sure that when they receive the phone, they will check it to determin and verify that the phone is still under warranty. And if they discover it is rooted, then your warranty is voided and you will be charged for the exchange

I've heard stories like this, where you get a nasty bill a few months later. Though I think it really depends on where you are and who they have working on these things. I wouldn't be surprised to hear things like these swept under the rug, but I also wouldn't be surprised hear of people getting caught. I really don't know what they do with the bricked phones people claim "just stopped workin" maybe they send them to a company that specializes in smartphone autopsies...or the manufacturer even.
Well I got my replacement phone today... hell yes I paid the $20 for rush delivery (took 2 days). I did flash the JFD even though it wont boot up. If I do get charged for it I will let you all know.

You will only get charged if its rooted, if you flashed back to stock you should be fine. Just never send in phone rooted cause thats the killer.

Well, if its truly bricked and they cant get it to boot, then they just send back to manufacturer. But if they get it to boot, then they will try to determine why it bricked in the first place. So if unsure whether or not flash to stock removed root, then best bet is to file a claim with insurance to get it replaced. Because paying 130 deductible is better than paying full price. At least IMO

BTW, If you have insurance on the phone the replacement cost is $150. Due to the fact that I have used the insurance to replace my phone more than 2 times in 1 year my insurance was canceled. When I did the warranty replacement now they tell me the cost billed to me is $238 if they find phone damage is not under warranty. Much less than buying the phone at full market price.

You aren't alone, fella. There's a lot of us in the same boat right now after using DOW. (And yes, we've all tried to flash back to stock with Odin - any stock.)
To the poster who said reformatting the internal storage worked for him -- congrats, you got lucky if you really had the same issue. I tried that. Didn't help at all on my phone. I wish it had!
Good luck, xdarooted. Let us know how it goes.

[Q] Bricked Thunderbolt? :(

This time I have really f***ed up guys. I really think this time I have actually bricked my Thunderbolt. I was on Bamf Remix 1.63 I believe and everything was running great. I was obviously rooted also. I was bored and decided to flash Protekks Battery Sipper Kernel. Right after I flashed it, the phone would not boot. I pulled the battery and booted up again and it got stuck in a boot loop. So after a few tries I finally got it to boot into the bootloader. I got into recovery and tried to flash a backup and it rebooted in the middle of restoring it. I tried that a few more times. I then let the battery die. Then I charged it up a lot and tried to power it on and got nothing. The screen will not even turn on. When plugged into my computer it sometimes vibrates and my computer detects it and then my computer makes the sound like it was disconnected. I think it is still stuck in the boot loop with the screen off though. BTW the charging light does light up when plugged in. I tried the stock and extended battery to make sure it was not a battery problem. I finally called up Verizon and after I told them it would not turn on he said he is shipping me a free replacement. I told them that after a OTA update the phone would not boot. He warned me that if there is any evidence that the phone was rooted or hacked, I would be charged the retail price for the phone. That is really the only thing I am scared of. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Sorry for the long post, I wanted to get in all the details that I could.
Thanks
Adam

Wtf? This isn't Samsung. OP do you bootloop in bootloader? I recommend you go to the irc and give them any info you can.. you will probably end up flashing a stock ruu through the bootloader but first go to irc.

OK thanks for the replies. Do you think the Verizon warranty center people will actually go to the trouble of getting it to work and then charge me full retail for a new one if they see it is rooted. I already have the stock zip on the SD card so when it does boot up, it will return everything to stock. I have read online that some people have been charged retail because there phones have been rooted but most of them have gotten away with with it..

thanks for the response man. etf= early termination fee? I might not have said in my original post but they are sending me a free replacement device. The rep on the phone specifically said that if they find my phone to be rooted or hacked, that I will be charged around 629$ for the refurb replacement. I really cannot afford that (
Call back and tell em you accidentally dropped it out of moving vehicle and that it was run over 5 times...and that it was raining outside. Then pay your deductible.

I got out of a bootloop on my friend's Insipre 4G (which is very similar to the TB) by mounting the microSD on my computer, and then putting a stock ROM on it. I had to rename the stock ROM PG98IMG (PG05IMG on Thunderbolt), and flash it through the bootloader, but it did work.
Thanks for the post man but the Thunderbolt does not show any signs of life at all besides the flashing orange LED at the top blinking and the computer detecting it on and off every 5 minutes. The stock zip is already on the SD card so when it finally boots up it will flash and hopefully Verizon won't charge me out the @ss for a replacement.

how long have you had your phone and what hardware revision was it? did you try to run the RUU yet?
i think some people just got a batch of faulty phones because this doesn't seem to affect many.
I highly doubt verizon is going to receive your broken phone and boot it up and it will magically work. The only way it will auto-update is if they boot it into HBOOT. If they somehow just power it on it won't automatically apply anything. Keep that in mind. But I really wouldn't worry too much about it. If they charge you call them and tell them wtf I wasn't rooted. I don't even know what that means lol.
I have had the phone since the very first days it was released. Another slight annoying thing I have had happening prior is the glue on the screen has not been holding it down very well and and I can easily get a nail under it. And it wont let me do anything. I have a Droid X as a backup for now but I miss my beast

that's what im starting to think as htc has since released a revision 2 thunderbolt. i know as i just bought mine a few weeks ago. im wondering if the faulty phones were version 1 phones and have since been fixed. i also do not experience the high battery drain most of you guys do either.

SD Card Unexpectedly Removed

Getting this message for some reason, and can't find a resolution. Copying my important stuff off now, then will probably reformat with the phone.
It started when I put the card in the replacement 3VO I ordered, because my first one was acting funny. About half a day later it game me the SD message, (sent it right back). Ever since I put it back in my first one it's been giving me that message.
Anyone have any ideas? Is my SD actually just going bad? Is it a corrupt file? Something entirely different?
Thanks to anyone who can help me get this figured out. Been searching Google since, but haven't found anything really relevant to the Evo 3D.

Hard to say, but you're doing the right thing coping everything off and then reformatting. My suggestion would be to also reformat it in the phone too. If this still happens, try another sdcard in the phone so you know for sure if it's the phone or the card.
Ok. Just went through with it. Seems like it's good so far. Didn't format it on the PC, just the phone, then reset the phone, then copied only my original stuff back on. So far so good. I'll add another reply in a couple days stating whether or not it holds up.

i've had the same issue with an aftermarket class 6 8GB sdcard I used in my EVO for a year. my experience has been once you start getting errors with an sdcard, they are on their last leg.
i would look into getting a replace or have a spare, just to be prepared, as its rough modifying your phone w/o an sdcard! too bad there isnt a tool which could give us more detail on the life/reliability of the sdcard!
hope it all works out!
i had the same problem....i do not think it is the sdcard
i believe the software is forgetting parts of the sdcard and sending the error.
it happened to me on my 16gb class 10
also happened on my wife's evo 3d with the stock card.
FIX: only fix i found is to get all info off with your pc then format the card and load everything back on through the phone or pc.
if anyone knows more i would like to know.
So far so good here. Took everything off my card, formatted it in the phone, put my stuff back on, and everything seems ok. Seems like if you just take your card out and toss it in another phone that'll happen. Didn't have that issue between my Hero and this one, so I'm not sure what the issue was.

[Q] Rezound Won't Turn On

I've looked through a few threads here and on other websites regarding the Rezound not turning on. I can't find one that matches my situation.
My wife's Rezound went completely dead last night. She remarked in bed that the battery was only 5% and that she didn't want to get up to plug it in. It of course would not turn on this morning. After being plugged in all day it still would not turn on. I pulled the battery for 5 minutes and replaced and still nothing. Holding Power+Volume Down for 30 seconds does nothing. This is where I started searching online.
Attempting adb reboot does nothing as it said device not found. I saw on another thread that the Rezound battery will fit in the Thunderbolt. I was thinking was I in luck since I have a Thunderbolt. I but the Rezound battery in, plugged it in and charged it to 60%. But when I put it back in the Rezound I can't get it to turn on.
When I plug in the Rezound the indicator lights do not come on at all, even for a brief second. I saw in one thread that the issue may be attributed to CWM recovery. But I have only put on Amon Ra since we got the Rezound a few months ago. The ROM is CleanROM Developer Edition.
At this point I am at a loss of what to do and will greatly appreciate any help.
try a diff battery same thing happen to mine
The battery appears fine as it charged OK and worked fine in the Thunderbolt. And I tried my Thunderbolt battery in the Rezound and it didn't work.
take to verizon and say it dont turn on
I will do that tomorrow. Will I have any problems though since the warranty is technically voided since I unlocked it? Say for example they can't get it to turn on with a new battery and want to swap it and they later determine it was unlocked. Will they come after me?
If your using CWR that is why its a problem with that recovery use amon ra. You need to put another battery in not the thunderbolt one try another charged Rezound battery and it should work then switch to amon ra and you'll be good.

Well technically you didn't void the warranty by unlocking, look at the HTC Dev notice that pops up before you unlock, but if you flashed something that made the phone not turn on then it is your fault and you have voided the warranty. Simply put, if you unlock and cause no harm to the device the warranty stays intact but if you unlock and break the device then you are held accountable for what you did.
If it won't power on at all, no matter what, they will give you a replacement, but if you can't get it to power on and you send it back to HTC and they get it back on and see it was your fault then you are going to be pinned with a fee.
i had no trouble returning mine when it did not turn on

I don't know the exact version but it was the latest version when I flashed it a couple months ago. Everything has worked perfectly till now.
Quick question, does the camera store pictures on the SD card or on internal memory? If Verizon gives me a replacement I'm sure my wife will want her pictures.

Plug it in via USB and wait a few minutes. The charging light may or may not flash on for a moment but it will definitely not remain on.
After it's gotten a bit of charge into it, what should happen is that the phone boots into a non-interactive recovery session so that the battery charge daemon loads to control the charging process, as these are fairly sensitive batteries and it's not just a simple matter of "apply power, wait until full" any more.
At this point, leaving the phone plugged in via USB to your computer, attempt to discover the device via adb in the normal way you do ... Try adb devices, or just adb shell. If this doesn't work, you are hosed, go to Verizon, get a new battery, and don't drain your phone to 0% on a custom recovery.
If you DO get into adb shell check and see if your battery is getting any juice at all, by running:
Code:
dmesg | grep BATT
You should see something like ...
Code:

What you're looking for in one of those lines is the "level=#" where you can see mine is sucking along nicely at 9% (guess who else did this a couple nights ago? lol.)
At this point, you CAN issue a reboot directly from the shell, your phone will boot into your ROM and the battery charging will be handled by the main system and you're fine.
What happens when you plug it in, unplug it, power down, hold power down, and whatever else you were trying to do is that the phone gets "stuck" in that non-interactive recovery kernel (if it even started it) which then drains the battery back to zero again. Stock CWM doesn't come with the battery daemon so it won't charge and you're SOL at this point. Amon Ra should so you hopefully can get enough charge into the battery to boot the full system. However, it also should recognize the keycodes when you tried to reset it, as it comes with those daemons as well (also CWM does not.)
Leave it plugged in while you try all this, and good luck.

I don't know the exact version but it was the latest version when I flashed it a couple months ago. Everything has worked perfectly till now.
Quick question, does the camera store pictures on the SD card or on internal memory? If Verizon gives me a replacement I'm sure my wife will want her pictures.

Mine did the same thing if u can figure out how to charge the battery in another device i.e charging your battery in a thunderbolt enough to get it to boot you are good. I still called verizon and reported the problem, they are sending me one out over night. Dail *611 from a verizon device that will get u over to a rep. Easy peezy. Don't worry about unlocked bootloaders and what not as long as there is no excessive physical or water damage u are fine. I know for a fact that is what they check for. You have to remember this is verizon you are dealing with, not HTC

Update: I went to a Verizon store (actually just an authorized reseller) to have it checked out. They had no luck, even with a new battery. The guy said that since the light doesn't even flash it is probably toast. I told him I couldn't even get adb to recognize it. He advised that I go to a Verizon corporate store or call support.
Since the closest corporate store is over 100 miles away and I'm not headed that way any time soon I called Verizon support. I'm surprised at the lack of a fight they put up when I explained in detail everything I tried and requested a new device. It will be here Friday.
I just hope that when I ship the old phone back they don't figure out that it was unlocked and bill me for the new phone or something like that.
So Friday night I'll have the joy or unlocking a new Rezound all over again! It's a really nice device and I am jealous. My wife won't take my Thunderbolt though.
Thanks for the replies everyone!

They are really good about taking returns and I wouldn't worry about them charging you. Many people have returned relocked before

FWIW I exchanged mine early in March, been five weeks so far since they recieved my phone. Just checked and nothing unusual on my bill yet (other than a charge for 25 cents on my unlimited txt plan, but I digress )

If the charge is 25 cents for finding an unlocked phone, I don't think anyone will complain

Potential issue with spare battery w\charging dock

Hey all.
I'm trying to figure out if anyone else has had any issues with their phone not booting after swapping batteries? Both my girlfriend and I had a similar issue within the last 24 hours where our phones would not immediately boot after we swapped out our batteries with ones we got from the 200GB promo.
Removing the SD Card or SIM card actually did get it to boot once (for each of us) but after a reboot to put the missing card back in it would just get stuck at the initial screen. However, once we replaced the original battery then there was no issue and the phone booted like normal.
Both phones are rooted and have TWRP 2.8.7.1 on them. Any help or extra information would be appreciated!
I swap mine all the time and haven't had that issue yet.

No problems here either. Might have something to do with rooting.
Not rooted here and no issues here either

Do you happen to have your sdCard encryption enabled?

No root, no encryption, no problems with the batteries or booting. I did have to give the memory card a name. I used a PC. Right click on the memory card & Rename or Properties & name.

Sorry for the delay. And no, I do not have it encrypted. I have noticed that this issue also exists on the G3 and G4 so I have a few good ideas as to why it might happen. But no real way to to prove it. I honestly think it is a problem that stems back from the G2 before they gave the phone a removable battery.
Rooted and no problems here. Just received my battery and 200GB promo today.

Well here's the odd thing about it tho; it didn't start happening right away. It was about 2-3 days after I had gotten the 200GB SD Card and battery that it started doing it.
And this morning I looked at my phone and the charger wasn't plugged all the way in so it was completely dead. After letting it charge for 15-20 minutes I tried powering it on and it wouldn't boot as I had feared would happen. But!! After I removed the SD Card it booted right away like normal. So confused and frustrated.

Just received my card as well and it booted right up after inserting it. I'll let it go through the weekend to see if anything happens.
I've had mine for a few weeks now, and never had this issue. The free battery is actually the one in my phone and I am very rooted. The 200GB is in my Tab S 10.5, though, and my 128GB is in my V10.
