[Q] Fast and constant reboot - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My pocket felt hot, so I pulled out my phone and saw that it kept rebooting itself. It just shows the initial Samsung splash for maybe a second or two, then loops again. I can get into Recovery and Download modes fine. I tried wiping the cache, factory reset, restoring a cwm backup. No luck so far. I've been using the CM9 rom for months. I haven't flashed or changed anything in months, I haven't even installed new apps in a while. Before this happened, it said I had no signal, so I had to restore my EFS(which I've had to do several times since I got the phone, mostly when I was switching back and forth from CM9 and stock to see which I prefer). After going into and out of airplane mode to reset the antenna, the signal and all worked fine. I let the phone cool down to make sure it wasn't just rebooting due to heat, but that didn't change anything. I've been searching here and google for anyone else with an identical issue, but I've failed so far. Everyone else seems to get to the home screen or just having random reboots during use.
Just to clarify, my question is: How can I fix my phone? Is there any other information I can give that would help?
I have the international i9300. I also tried removing the SD card and SIM card, since one thread concerning a different kind of rebooting issue reported success with that. Nope.

Try to reflash a stock rom on Odin

Is that different from restoring the original rom with CWM? I did that already. I don't have or know how to use Odin, but I'll download it and figure it out if that's the next step.

Solution?
Ok, I never didn't have to figure out Odin. I fixed it by wiping dalvik, factory resetting, restoring the stock rom, wiping it all again, rebooting into stock(it worked), then restoring back to the backup I made after the crash. Some of these steps might not be crucial, but at worst you waste a few minutes to make sure it works right again. Hopefully it'll help others with similar problems.

Resetting on restart

Lately (since yesterday) I have been having a weird problem. Every time I restart my phone, it resets. By resetting I mean my it looks like a fresh install. All my apps are still there but launcherpro has the fresh install look and GAPPS is asking me to install stuff. I have also been getting a lot of FC's with these restarts. I have tried going back to a earlier NANDROID and it seems to do the same thing...going ever further back now to see if it still does it. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

You flash anything or change anything with a2sd etc, before this started happening?
It's not doing it on an older NANDROID (from 4/22).
I flashed Drowning 7-6 ad then noticed it. But since my last restart before that, I've installed a lot of stuff. I will try it for a while on this NANDROID and see if it does it again after updating my apps, too many changes to rebuild from here...
Basically what happened was I flashed the Kernel (7-6) and restarted, things were fine...but then (per Drownings advice) I restarted again, and then all hell broke loose. I recovered my last NANDROID but experienced the same thing with just a restart, so now I am on an earlier NANDROID and tried a restart and all went well..Like I said I will try to update my apps when I get home (damn ATT data caps) and see what happens then...
OK...several restarts after installing updates, and everything seems normal it's definitely got something to do with either drowning 7-5 or 7-6, or n75 and/or n76.
Right now with the NANDROID I am running n42 with drowning 7 with aufs enabled (as was with the newer ROMS)
I also run DT A2SD with apps and dalvic on SD.
I will try to upgrade to n76 and drowning 7-7 in a few and see how that works out...
n76 and Drowning 7-7 has been good so far...I think the problem is solved...there was definitely something wrong with my setup that was common to the later NANDROID...thank god I saved some NANDROIDS
Wasn't there some kind of known issue with 7.6? I don't remember the details, but I seem to recall that there was some reason why I didn't flash it at the time (aside from general laziness).
Did a fresh install of n76 with S2E and Drowning 7-7, all is running smooth again and I have restarted a dozen times with no issue. After flashing over top of ROM's for the last few months there was probably some trash getting in the way, so I decided to clean house.

[Q]Wifi issue still present factory reset fixed.

So, before I start this, Yes I was a noob. I didnt make a nandroid backup from when I first rooted my phone and everything worked 100%. I didnt read, and I guess its now biting me in the ass.
The past few months Ive been having issues with Wifi, it continuously says "Unable to scan for networks". I did a factory reset about a week and a half ago and for the first time my wifi was able to connect, however it was dropping out every couple minutes. Wouldnt even stay connected to install any market updates.
I figured that it was something with my dying router(Which Ive since replaced) so I flashed in BAMF to see if I could keep my wifi connection with another rom. Ive been using VirusROM(Love it even though its out od date). I wiped and flashed in BAMF, and restarted. When I restarted, I had no wifi again. Since then, Ive been trying out different ROMS and kernels in hopes that I would find something that would fix it. Nothing did.
After this I figured that I would just do another factory reset and go from there, however with all of the times Ive done the factory resets it never actually gets reset. Does it wipe my info? Yes, but it boots back up with all of the portions of whatever ROM I had installed last. Not reset. So now Ive ended up with two problems.
1. I still have no wifi
2. I cant factory reset so that I can figure out what is going on with my wifi.
Ive wiped Cache/Batt Stats/Davlick and done a factory reset literally six times in a row to hopefully clean EVERYTHING OUT to no avail. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I hope Im just missing something small because Im still new to android.
Edit: I DO NOT use kernel manager and I dont use ROM manager to flash it in, I flash everything in through recovery.

I'm sure there's an RUU out there that will take your phone back to stock but I honestly doubt that's the issue here. What radio version are you using? Have you tried flashing different radios to see if that would fix it. You can find a list here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045081. Also what ROM are you currently on?
When you install a ROM, it modifies the /system directory which is responsible for everything, how the rom looks, included apps, drivers etc.
When you do a factory reset, I'm guessing through recovery, it is only clearing the /data and /cache partitions.
You will have to flash a stock RUU to get it to truly go back to the day you got it.
Here are instructions on how to return to stock:

The ROM Ive been on hasnt mattered. Ive jumped through BAMF, the new Cubed Rom, the Deodexed stock debloat and Virus' Airborne(which is my daily driver). Ive done the different radios. I was on the v2 leaked for a while, then I switched to the new 3g and old 4g to see if its worked but it hasnt. I may have to try out the original one and see if that works, but I havent had wifi since before I flashed in the leaked radio when it came out.

Gotcha. Trying this now. I will make sure to make a nandroid this time if it works. lol.
@isdnmatt: Thanks, that got rid of my recovery problem
Still having wifi issue though. 100% out of the box stock and I get the "Unable to scan for networks
**** me, I should have read that before I did it. Now I have to reroot. Goddamnit.
Have had the same problem with WiFi before and after ADB root. It will sometimes forget both my home and work networks. I've found the problem usually occurs when I'm connected then move put of range. A reboot fixes the problem sometimes. Other times I have to re-enter my settings. I'm still on the stock Rom, nothing custom.

Thats a separate issue than what Im having. Im not having issues with it forgetting my networks. I cant scan for networks.
I am thinking of downgrading the radio.
EDIT: after LOTS of research here, I upgraded to MR2 and Gingervitis. All of my WiFi issues are gone.

[Q] Eris rooted FC issues

Hey guys,
little frustrated here as i am having some issues. I have the ERIS running Gin tazz CM7, and when the phone is on, it runs flawlessly, but as soon as i reboot or turn the phone off, and turn it back on, i get a force close error message stating "com.android.phone" has stopped working, and pretty much makes the phone useless. I then have to wipe and re-flash the ROM and everything is fine again, until I reboot/turn phone off and boot back up.
I experimented a little last night, and put the phone in airplane mode and shut the phone off, rebooted, and turned it off of airplane mode when it was done booting, and i did not get that message. I thought i had found the cure. Rebooted again and got the same error message! I'm pulling my hair out, not sure what else to do. Has anyone heard of this issue, and if so is there a quick fix? FYI i used another ROM and it did the same thing, so i do not think it is the software. It is almost as if on the reboot it can't load the necessary "codes" to get the radios up and running again. Any feedback appreciated!
p.s i attached a screenshot to let you guys see what the error message looked like!
do you do full wipes of data and dalvik for every flash? The same issue hit me one time when I had not done wipes of both. I went back and wiped both, dalvik I just went ahead and wiped three times. Idk that three times matters but I wanted to make sure I was good to go and I know I had seen workshed post before about 3x wipe of dalvik. When I went back and wiped everything like that and re-flashed everything went back to normal for me.
The wipe of Data & Dalvik is a critical step. Like the poster above me, I've heard the "3 times" suggestion and I'm not sure why 1 versus 3 would make a difference. However, just to be safe, I have started wiping Data & Dalvik 5x each, each time I flash. It's most likely just overkill & paranoia, but hey, I've had no issues.
Some roms, depending on what are are upgrading from, may also require you to delete a folder from your sd card. For example, as Workshed states in his GSB v3.7 thread,
"If you're coming from a cm6 or 2.1 ROM, make sure you delete .android_secure folder on your sdcard before flashing."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11178912&postcount=1
Hope this helps!
Having similar problems. Only wiped once, I'll try it a few times and see how that goes.

[Q] WiFi suddenly stopped working

I've tried it all folks. New kernels, factory reset, different radios, different ROMs. Every-thing. The WiFi will turn on for a quick second and I will get an error message "Unable to scan for networks" and then the Wifi will just turn on and off on and off over and over again. I've even deleted the files in the data/dhcp and data/wifi folders. Rebooted, still same issue. I've deleted the files and flashed a kernel and rebooted, still same issue.
Of course I am still in contract and will have to purchase a new phone outright from Verizon if I can't get this issue resolved......
I don't know what else to do here.....
Did you try formatting data and system before installing a new rom from recovery? If that doesn't work i would say its a hardware issue. You're not restoring system data with any backup programs are you?

I've wiped pretty much everything known to man on the phone. The ROM installs are all "fresh" I haven't tried to install any APPS on the phone. Just wipe everything, factory reset / Dalvik Cache, all of it... install fresh ROM. Try to turn on Wifi, phone boot loops. No matter what ROM I install, still same issue with Wifi / boot looping.
Well guess we can close this out. I went out and paid full boat for a Samsung Nexus since I couldn't fix this issue.
I'd like to reopen this topic. I had been running Bamf Forever 1.10, but last night I decided to try another ROM because it's been running really slow for some reason.
Did a wipe (factory reset, Dalvik cache) and installed Thunderstick. Now WiFi is broken -- the exact same problem as described in the original post. I tried flashing a new kernel and new radios, and cannot get WiFi to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Will flashing back to stock ROM/unrooting help?
Thanks!
@ajoesq I had the same problem when i installed thunderstick thru boot manager. My wifi stopped and I could get it going on my phone rom. So i booted back into thunderstick and wifi was working. Booted back to hte phone rom then into recovery and then i flashed my phone rom again without wiping or anything (Thunbershed V1.2) and it worked fine. wifi started agian.

Run a logcat when you try to turn wifi on. Put the output on pastebin.com and post the link. This might tell us what the problem is.
I'd make sure that the radio(s) were at least at the minimum of what the ROM called for.

Keeps rebooting, even when idle

Hey, so about a month or so back, my Vibrant has started to restart seemingly randomly. I do nothing to trigger it, I will just have it sitting on my desk and then I see the boot animation. This has happened on various ROMs as I have tried fixing it by flashing different ones. Fishmanmod v4, Slim ICS, CM9 nightlies, all the same issues. Different kernels, same problem as well.
I have ODIN'd back to stock multiple times and reflashed all different ROMs to no avail. I always wipe cache, dalvik, format system, factory reset... all that stuff when I flash a new ROM. I have left things stock, not installing any apps, same issue.
So, does anyone know what could be the issue, how I can fix this? Any information anyone needs for me to post? I am not sure what to do, and it is a rather annoying problem.
Me and my sister have the same phone (Vibrant) and she had the same issue. Not exactly sure what caused it, but switching out the battery seemed to help. (It was probably something else, but it seemed to be working after we switched batteries. Worth a shot!)
