[Q] Galaxy S 2 Boot Error - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone! just a rookie here in need of a bit of advice.
I'm a Galaxy S II I9100 owner and have my phone rooted and all setup with custom roms and been comfortable with flashing for some time now. My ROM of choice recently was Vanilla Rootbox and have to say the ROM has been fantastic with very few bugs to report. Last night i recieved the OTA update via Goo Manager for Vanilla Rootbox 3.4. I downloaded the full update over wifi and flashed with all wipes no worries. Next step was to flash the latest GAPPS and i figured there would be nothing wrong with flashing the GAPPS zip i had on my sd card that i had downloaded the last time i was notified of a GAPPS update via Goo manager as well. After flashing, wiping everything and rebooting again. My phone then booted up to a series of dialog boxes indicating that many google processes had stopped functioning. apps.google.com etc etc. A similar error has been reported in the Vanilla Rootbox thread by another user but i wasnt able to report this bug their either because my post count is too low to post in a development forum. So after seeing this error i rebooted into recovery to flash my last backup but CWM recovery came back with an error messaging stating it couldnt mount either ext or int sdcard. i did a factory reset which made no difference to the problem whatsoever. I then downloaded ODIN and the latest stock ICS Rom and flashed it via ODIN with no reported errors. My phone now boots through the optus boot animation and is stuck at the Galaxy S 2 screen with the flashing red and yellow animation over the S. If i turn off the phone with the power button, the phone turns off and immediately starts again and gets stuck at the flashing s screen. I've taken the battery sim and ext sd card out and put it all back in only for the problem to persist.
If anyone could help me there's a donation and my thanks in it!
Much appreciated
Nick

tried to re flash another stock ROM?
If so, tried factory reset the phone after the flash?
As long as you can get to DL mode, you are good to keep on flashing till you are up & running.
And then you got this
Remember to update your kies and make sure you close it all up before flashing with odin. If you are in 4.0.4 beware of the brick bug.

Kies has never been installed on this computer but i did use the usb drivers mentioned in the soft brick recovery guide you linked. I used some information from the guide to flash this stock rom but i couldnt flash or wipe the partition because im unsure where to get the .PIT file required? i cant get past the boot animation so no factory reset possible and yes i can still get into download mode!

wow wow, leave pit files alone for now, they are nasty.
What stock ROM did you flash? 4.0.4 or 4.0.3?
You can factory reset via recovery mode.
Try installing kies anyway, it can't never hurt. Just make sure all applications are closed before you re-flash.
here's jb leak, might help:

Right so i flashed I9100XWLP8 stock rom (4.0.3). Just then i flashed Siyah Kernel and attempted to use the factory reset function in recovery there, i get a message down the bottom mentioning that it can't mount my internal SD.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 bricked?

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have searched this forum but could not find a similar situation to what I ended up in...
I tried to install a custom ROM on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 using the CWM/Odin.
This seemed succesful but was not, it did not start but was stuck in the Samsung logo.
So I tried entering the CWM and download and install an original Samsung ROM. I can get it into CWM, but CWM cannot enter the download mode only the other mode.
In this mode all options are available:
- reboot
- apply update from SD card
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
All options have been tried without any luck. In the update from SD card it only shows ...
or Error opening /data/media: no such file or directory
Any ideas how I could get this directory back or put a ROM on the Samsung in this situation.
Odin does see the Galaxy but as I cannot get it into Download mode I am unable to download anything to it.
All or any suggestions are very welcome!
1. CWM (Clockworkmod) =! Odin.
In the beginning, you don't have CWM installed. You install CWM, by flashing CWM on your Phone with odin.
Odin is the Windows Programm, that is used to flash Recoveries/ROM's/Kernels onto your device.
2. it seems, that you still have the default Samsung recovery installed, that meand CWM is not yet flashed on your device.
If the flashing process was succesful (I suppose it was done with odin), but you can't get past the Samsung logo, that means, you probably flashed a rom, that isn't made for your device(ex. a GTab 10.1v Rom).
If you DID flash a wrong rom, then you probably ****ed up the partition table and removed the Download Mode(Odin Mode). Strange thing is, that you still have the Stock recovery.
Could you please redirect us to the rom you downloaded?
Also, did you flash with a repartition on and/or a .pit file?
hi Kaukassus,
thanks for the reply.
OK I checked the files and what I did.
I think I totaly screwed this up. It was a theme I tried to install the AOSP_HC_v1.3_3G+KI1.
I rooted the Tab. So first when the Tab was still functioning installed it on the TAB via USB.
Than tried to install this via update from SD card.
This appeared to work initially. But hung at the start.
After that I tried (via Power Volume Up) wipe data/factory reset.
No luck.
After that I tried wipe cache partition followed by wipe data/factory reset.
And this is what I got now..
Bad news is the Tab was/is a X-mas present and I managed to screw it up even before I officially got it !-(
The valuable lesson you're learning is that you need to be aware exactly what things you're flashing and their compatibility with your device and the software it's running.
You haven't mentioned what specific device you're using or the specific things you've tried to flash (as kaukassus pointed out, direct links to threads where you got the files you tried to flash are best). Not sure if you're aware but not all GT 10.1's are equal; there are several models out there and each and every ROM is specific to a particular device. Verizon LTE GT 10.1's like mine can't take ROMs from any other device for example, it's likely that the new T-Mobile 4G one's wont be able to trade ROMs with Verizon ones . . you get the point.
When you say you installed via USB what exactly did you mean? If you simply copied a zip file via USB to the tab to flash in recovery mode that's not installing; the flashing from recovery may be but the file copy operation is not. If on the other hand you pushed things via ADB or you flash using Odin software then that's a different story.
Best thing to do at this point is to properly identify your device, look for a stock recovery image for Odin and flash that via Odin to your device. At that point you can start from scratch again to build what you want.
Thanks Muzzy996.
You are right. I was in a rush and should have taken more time.
However I am getting somewhere. Managed to get in download mode twice today, don't ask me how. This Tab just will not go into download mode!
However I did not have the stock ROM ready to be installed.
Will keep you updated.
i have the same problem. i just rooted my device was going to overclock. decided to save my rom with rom manager. saved it device went to reboot now the samsung galaxy 10.1 shows up screen goes dim then shuts off, and will cont. do this. i can get into download mode but recovery will not work. is there anyway to download my stock rom. im using verizion 4g 10.1 any help would be great, btw sorry to thread jack
Problem solved.
Managed to get it in download mode again and install stock rom via Odin.
Appeared to work fine. But kep switching off, even after full night of charging.
This morning Tab was dead after recharging whole night..
Got it back on by holding volume down and power button down.
i found a stock rom and im trying to upload it via odin, however odin does not find my tab? any ideas. btw congrats on getting ur tab back
I crashed both my I9000 (galaxy s) flashing custom roms and my tab 10.1 (editing some system files) both ended up just looping but managed to get both back. I purchased a small connector of ebay £1.59 that has just a resistor accross pins 4&5 331k I think anyway plugging this into most samsung devices boots them into download mode. Even before getting my resistor I managed to get things working I think that you'd have to be properly unlucky to really brick a samsung I've flashed both my devices with all sorts of crap with my little resistor I just reset them with ease.

please help! BOOTLOOP Problem with CyanogenMod

Hey Folks,
Yesterday i tried installing CM9 Nightly on my SGS2 (no root). I followed the "Full Update Guide at the CyanogenMod-Forum but ended up with the bootloop problem even though i precisly followed the steps here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide
Now my s2 wont boot and is showing the yellow triangle. I can get into Recovery Mode which shows "CWMR Touch v.5.5.0.4.".
i downloaded the latest nightly build but when i tried flashing CM9 as described i got an error message "verification failed".
any help is appreciated!
hi
try putting the phone in odin mode and install another rom
Factory reset first when you have bootloop.
no need to worry.
get the nightly again dont use the torrent. it should be 118 mb.
using cwm format system, data, preboot, cache.
now flash again. you should have the file on ur ext sdcard already.
If worst comes to worst then download a offical samsung firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 or from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928 if carrier branded phone then open odin and flash the files within download mode. If you don't know how to use odin then follow the guide within the first link
How come there will be a boot loop if everything is followed precisely?
You can try flashing the same again

Bro just remember that you must never flash a rom from within CWM or Rom Manager with our sgs2. I also did that and had same issue. Now, you can get into recovery mode and that is awesome. First things first, wipe everything, full system wipe, full wipe cache, full wipe sd card(format), next, attach your sgs2 to your pc and mount usb storage, transfer your chosen rom to sd card(I use Hydrogenics which is awesome). Next, unmount sd card, now flash hydrogenics. Now reboot system once hydrogen is finished flashing. You should never have issues like this again, especially with Hydrogenics. Also, do not forget to put gapps ics on sd card and flash it after you have flashed Hydrogenics. You can also use yellow triangle away app to remove the stupid leftover triangle from your previous rom flashing attempts, if you got LPB. Anyways bro, have fun and do not stress too much because the sgs2 is really hard to brick. Also, remember to check the md5 sum when downloading a rom, this lets you know it has not been tampered with and the entire rom is there.

Rooted i9100 ics rom fail, please help

Hi I have rooted my UK i9100 with odin and successfully installed resurrection remix previously. When trying to flash an updated version I stupidly forgot to factory wipe and now my phone wont boot, it gets stuck on the rom boot screen and i cant get into cwm.
I can get into download mode and from there have tried flashing another rom via odin (litening rom) to see if that would boot to get me into cwm but that freezes on the boot screen also. I tried to use Galaxys2recovery as shown on zedomax youtube channel but then realised that is done from gingerbread only. I tried reflashing "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LP6-v5.2-CWM5" via odin and then the litening rom again but that still hangs when trying to boot.
Is there something obvious I should be doing? ..I am (unsuprisingly) a noob
Thank you
you could have asked at the first time itself, before various yourown attempts ?
if you are able to get CWM now, try to install the ROM after data factory reset and all the wipes + system format from Mounts & storage.
if it didnt help again go to CWM do all the wipes and format system, and switch off and get into the download mod and flash a GB stock rom from ODIN

that's the thing, i cant get into cwm, or at least i don't know how to. Is there a file I can install from odin that will put me straight into cwm without having a working rom?
why do you wait to boot the phone to get into the CWM,
didnt you try Vol-up+Home+Power while phone is off

MTP USB drivers won't install using ODIN

I tried to do a search for this problem but search isn't working on XDA right now... So my problem is that I was trying to update my Hellybean ROM and when I wiped I must have wiped something I shouldn't have. The newest ROM was saved to my internal SD and after wiping it wouldn't reboot into TWRP so I tried CWM, which it did boot into but wouldn't load the old version of Hellybean on my ext sd. I tried to load a .tar file through ODIN to get the phone going again but it keeps failing when trying to load the MTP USB drives, so I am stuck! Anyone know what the problem might be?
I should add, when loading a tar file through ODIN, the phone reboots through the initial Samsung logo then goes to another and gets stuck there. I am thinking that it is not loading all of the files because of the USB drive not being installed?
You might try grabbing the modified CWM file from BlownFuze's AOKP thread and flashing it from your ext sd card. It will flash the newest roms. If all else fails you could try the emergency firmware recovery in Kies.

Through CWM it will see a couple of rom's on the ext sd but I get an error when it starts to flash. I tried Kies but when I plug in the USB it doesn't see the phone. I don't think it's bricked as I can get into download mode and cwm??
After getting some sleep I thought about what I did yesterday when flashing the rom. I had a longggg day at work and was tired and after wiping the phone I think I rebooted it before flashing the rom, I am almost positive I did that. It will be the last time I flash after a long, tiring day! Anyone ever reboot the phone after a wipe without flashing a rom first?
I don't know what tar file you were flashing thru odin but I do know when you flash back to stock it always hangs up on the first boot. Then you have to go into recovery and do a factory reset and boot up again. BlownFuze posted a handy guide on flashing the stock rom back in June. You might have a look at that and see if it's any help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42806745&postcount=360
I got it figured out and fixed... the version of CWM was an old one, uploaded the newest one and got everything reloaded!!
Glad to hear that. Seems like the 4.3 roms are a bit more finicky about the recovery version you're on.

I pulled a LOT of hairs out yesterday trying to figure it out, and it was such a simple fix! Thanks for your help!!!!
I'm glad I could give a little help. Happy flashing!

Every time I flash stock rom with Odin the phone gets stuck at boot

So I've got this issue I never had before.
It started happening after I screwed something up with the EFS I think.
I was flashing some custom roms after the 4.3 official update and then tried to go back to 4.1 official.
Had the no network problem, but fixed it flashing the vodafone stock 4.3 official again.
Reading all the stuff about EFS confused me, and I deleted the EFS folder and copied an old backup (or so I think, because I'm not sure. I had a EFS backup on my sdcard and extsd I think).
I no longer have the no network issue, but everytime I flash a stock rom through Odin the phone gets stuck at the samsung logo, so I have to root the phone and install TWRP using Odin and then wipe. I know this way fixes this, but what I'm looking for is to fixed the problem completely so I don't have to install a custom recovery or root after using Odin to go back to official samsung rom.
Any ideas?
What should I do?
Maybe the phone gets stuck at the samsung logo because all of this EFS thing, but, like I said, I no longer have the no network issue.
All I want is for the phone to boot normally into the setup after flashing a samsung rom using Odin.
It just gets stuck every single time since I had this problem with the EFS, when before this never happened.
try to install the rom in recovery mode

I had this problem before (flash 4.1.2 in current 4.2.2 by odin), here's my solution.
Maybe you can install your ROM in recovery mode. (CWM based)
Remember to wipe completely before installing

I can flash custom roms through TWRP, but what I'm looking for is to be able to do so again through Odin without ending up stuck at boot always and having to wipe through TWRP to be able to boot properly.
Any ideas?
I'm sure there must be a fix so I don't get stuck at the boot screen after flashing a samsung rom with Odin.
I know the trick wipe factory reset but what I really want is to simply avoid getting stuck at the boot screen after flashing a samsung rom with Odin.

Factory reset is also available in default recovery as well, then what is the issue? Flash then boot to recovery do factory reset.

Thanks.
I'm just trying to find out why my SGS3 now gets stuck at boot when before it never happened.
I'm hoping there's a way to fix it and go back to before, when it never got stuck at boot. There should be a way I guess.
