I'm due for an upgrade now, and browsing through the phones on the Verizon store (I can't upgrade through any third party due to the fact I'm on a business account) the only decent 4g phone is the rezound.
I'm currently on a 2 year old Xperia Play, 3g, and it's only redeeming factor is the cool slide out gamepad I use to this day. However, it's seen better days and I gotta retire it. So my question is, is the Rezound worth the free price tag? I hear that rooting it is on the easier side, and that I can squeeze battery life/power out of it through this method, but I'm pretty new to phone hardware/software.
It's either that or pay 50-150 bucks for a new phone. I'd honestly rather not pay anything, but knowing that this phone is a full year old at this point might influence that decision.

If you're willing to spend the money, I strongly recommend the GSIII. I got mine for $99 right before Christmas.

The rezound was ahead of its time so font let the one year mark scare you. However, if your gonna have to keep this phone for two more years you'd be better off with a newer peice of hardware, like the sgs3 or the DROID dna. Also the DROID razr m doesn't look to bad but idk about the modding process for moto phones

I've had my Rezound for a while now and I'm always looking at which phones are new. So far, because I don't like huge screens and I like my micro SD card I don't see many new phones for me. I also prefer HTC phones because of the superior cameras. So at this point the Rezound is still a good phone, but it doesn't seem to have 2 years worth of life left.

The DNA feedback has been surprisingly good. Battery life is amazing, and it runs like a beast straight out of the box unrooted.
However it's been out a while and like always, there's something better on the Horizon. The GS3 is a nice phone but I wouldn't burn an upgrade for it if you plan to keep your next phone longer than a year or so.
I can't say much about the rezound that's negative. Most of the comments people made who were unhappy was back before we had official ICS firmware and ice cream sandwich source code.
Since you're considering spending a little money on a newer phone anyway, have you considered buying a cheap rezound from a third party (as in a nice used one off contract) and saving your upgrade for the next batch of new phones?
The other advantage there is the readily available development, and HTC dev unlock and s off, all of which exist already.
A friend of mine had an older phone that was decent, but wanted a new toy. He held his upgrade but bought a mint nexus 7 off of somebody local for an extremely cheap deal. Just throwing out ideas, I know it's not likely that's something you're wanting to do.

I'm probably not the person to ask. I don't buy on contract anymore (not losing my unlimited), and there's really not another phone out that interests me right now anyway. The DNA is the only one that piques my interest at all, but I'm waiting for an AOSP RIL. Samsung is the only other manufacturer that has anything resembling an attractive package to me right now, but I don't like Samsung phone hardware (their screens completely kill the deal for me). All things considered, the Rezound is still the right phone for me right now, but I'd be hard pressed to recommend one on contract.

I can agree with that. I love the brightness and vibrance of my GSIII screen, but it is nowhere near as sharp as my rezound. The battery life is pretty sick though.

The battery life on the Rezound is, in my opinion, very poor. The only way my Rezound is useful to me is with the extended battery, which renders the phone a brick. Also, I'm tired of "plasticky" feeling phones. I haven't held a Droid DNA in my hands, but from what I've read about it, it feels more solid. That being said, I wouldn't get a Droid DNA until there's a strong dev community around it.

That's becoming the industry standard on high end smartphones. Completely sealed except for the SIM slot. No expandable memory, no replaceable battery. I can see good and bad in it. I could easily get by with 8GB if I had to with everything I do being so cloud connected, but having more is nice and I don't like losing the option. The battery being internal is definitely doubled edged. It lets them optimize the battery to better utilize the internal space, which lets them squeeze the most out of the battery they can, but there are days I just need to pop a new one in.

Unfortunately the downfall to non expandable memory and cloud solutions is the tiered data plans that people are being forced into. Streaming any kind of music from say... Google music's cloud storage will burn through your data like you wouldn't believe(I have almost 10 GB of music on my phone). I just... don't like it. That's one reason I opted for my GSIII. The ability to have a 64GB SD is worth being behind slightly in software or hardware.

I just got the rezound today for free coming from an s2 on Sprint. I must say I'm pretty impressed! It's a bit heavy and I'm not rooting until I my 14 day trial is up. The beats headphones is a win win. Keyboard sucks but I'm overall happy for my first day. I'm more concerned about this 2gb of data I'm sharing with my girl than the phone itself. The DNA looks good but the battery and no expandable memory killed it for me

Battery life is the only complaint I have on the rezound. Even a year old its as good or better than most other phones except a few high end phones. My wife got a razr m two months ago and its a very nice phone. Aside from the screen resolution its better than the rezound in almost everyway hardware wise. It's exactly the same hardware as the razr hd but a smaller screen. And it has jb. The ppi is crap on it is the only bad thing. And built in battery. But it does have an sd card. For an inexpensive phone it is extremely nice. But I still love my rezzie.

the GS4 is in production right now and the samsung mobile director said at CES that he needs to crank it out ASAP to stay competitive. Just be patient
I've had my rezound fit amidst a week and got 10 hours battery life today with light use and still have 30%

I am in the same boat as you. I renewed my contract before they stop grandfathering unlimited contracts and got the rezound. At this point I see no reason to upgrade. The phone has GSM, great screen, good camera, 4G(best part ), and it feels good. I would recommend this phone if you are in the market for a free one. If your desires are for something else make sure to research the community behind the phone. The GSIII has a CleanROM for it but unfortunately the developer jumps devices faster than most people can keep up. The rezound just got a relatively stable version of jelly bean that is only going to get better.

I wonder if eris was under promoted or under developed on purpose so that customers felt it necessary to move in to higher end devices. A marketing plan. It runs so sweet on froyo. Better than it ever did from the start. They had to know that it would. I thought for a long time that I bought the lesser phone much because of price. I looked forward and counted months so that I could upgrade. Now with a rooted eris running xda upgrades and other neat improvements there's nothing out there that is close to tempting me away. I'm sure a lot of people that had trouble with eris screwed it up themselves.
Vanilla Tazz, swype, latest market, great updated navigation, 3400 battery and more.
I even went to a verizon store and downloaded side by side to droid 2 and fascinate and eris was faster. I have no idea why but it did it time and time again.
Thanks XDA and all you eris fans.
Oh yea I'm keeping an eye on Kaos and his gingerbread progress and with ROM manager I'll be playing with that before long.

I seriously doubt it. The Eris is essentially the same hardware as the GSM Hero (and T-Mobile G2), which was released three months before the Eris, and is in fact only different from the G1 in the amount of internal RAM and storage. I don't think it's possible that HTC knew that an overclocked Eris could run Froyo acceptably (albeit without Flash, one of Froyo's selling points) at the time it was developed; Android 2.0 wasn't even out when the Hero first came out.
Comparing the speed of a rooted, overclocked Eris to a stock Fascinate and Droid 2 is a bit of an unfair comparison, IMHO.
I am sure that Verizon wanted a second phone to be available when the Droid was announced, priced lower, to help the ramp-up to Android sales. And, as far as I know, the Eris actually sold very well - not as well as the Droid, but it was still very successful.
I had the motor droid first, I guess the hype for to me.. soon found out that the keyboard sucked and I didn't like the bulky feel of the phone was still in my thirty days so I got the eris loved it since

they rebranded the hero for verizon, and just never bothered to do full testing on the trackball.
have you noticed that since the eris/nexus 1 htc hasnt put another trackball in any of their phones? yeah. htc sucks with trackballs, they found that out with the eris, and the nexus 1 was already too far into production to take it out before release some 7-8 months after the eris was released and they got word of the user complaints.
it was a half way there job, poor testing, and then HTC sense on top to slow everything down. just a corporate **** up to push a device out the door for a cheap buck (that and they were rushed on top of all that, verizon wanted to launch their droid line with or without HTC's little eris)
That question is sort of like asking "Is the Ford Fiesta purposely underdeveloped? The Ford Taurus is so much better!"
The Droid and the Eris were launched by Verizon on the same day, with different form factors and price points.
That's just modern marketeering - you segment your product offerings to appeal to people with different tastes or price preferences in order to maximize your return, rather than offering only a single product.
I have to believe that when Verizon had their first look at the Droid, the marketing folks probably said - "this thing is a brick, women are not going to buy it."
The other part of it has to do with Verizon's desire to control their supply chain: if they only had a single vendor for their first Android phone, they would have less leverage in price negotiations with Motorola. Remember that in the US market, the carriers are still trying to run the show.
So was it "purposely under developed"? Very doubtful. If you buy a Ford Fiesta and discover that it sucks, you probably are not going to say to yourself, "maybe I'll run out and buy a different Ford model" - you'll select a different maker first. Neither VZW nor HTC want people to think that their stuff stinks; brand perception is a huge deal in commodity products.

well said, bftb0. not so much underdeveloped, but rather sold as a lower cost alternative to appeal to those that didn't want to spend an extra $100+ for the moto droid.
I think the eris hardware is a great value. So I'm not expecting to turn a cheap device into something it's not capable of. That's the interesting question. As it stands it's extremely capable. With just a few software enhancements it meets or exceeds what I would expect out of so called higher end models. I guess that's the beauty of Android--even when the manufacturers put an end of life status on a unit that doesn't really end it at all thanks to folks at XDA and fellow enthusiasts that are satisfied and amazed at what they are able to do and wonder just how far this development can go. And it's actually more fun than opening something new out of the box.

I think they stop coming out with software improvements as soon as the next hardware cycle comes out. The ones you do see after that (like when 2.0 came out for the eris) were probably still in the works when the phone was being sold. They want to use froyo (and gingerbread) as selling points on new phones, implying they wont be available on the older models. Of course, the eris has great froyo roms and even some preliminary gingerbread roms, so i guess the good people here at xda rendered that point moot.

I was kind of thinking the same thing when final DNA specs came out. Maybe the next big thing will have a micro sd and removable battery when I'm eligible next year. If this becomes a trend I may have to get a tablet to go along with my phone down the line. Makes me appreciate my Rezound even more. Just my $.02.

With the iPhone being the gold standard in phone design and Google's Nexus phones moving towards no external storage and non-replaceable batteries, I think the other OEMs are taking suit and following. It is a shame since I utilize two batteries (both standard) to keep me afloat when I don't have downtime to charge my Rezound around 12-2pm every day. Android/Android+UI skins and the hardware are not optimized enough to offer what the iPhone can - a 1440mAH battery and all day or longer battery life.
To OP:
I disagree with HTC picking "a side". They release phones on multiple carriers, unlike Apple's original stance with AT&T-only. A problem is the fact they are having an identity crisis at the moment. They're phones are labeled under carrier-owned franchises (DROID, EVO, etc) rather than their own (e.g.: one), although it seems like they're working on that...slowly. They're definitely the last one to the game out of the big 3, with Motorola reviving the 'RAZR' platform and Samsung running with their 'Galaxy' series. It's fragmented in a way for non-carrier branded phones, like the Thunderbolt to the Rezound to now Droid DNA. No consumer who doesn't have an interest in phones like we do will ever realize the successors and predecessors because these are all new phone names...not just a new generation (like iPhone 5 or the GS3 or even RAZR HD). They need to stick with the 'one' branding and work on only a couple of phones at a time and spread it across all carriers possible to grant the most access to consumers. Motorola tried the whole 'let's throw a bunch of phones against a wall and see which ones stick'...it didn't get them too far and then they were overwhelmed with phone updates (sound ... familiar?). Although exclusivity is excellent for the carrier, it's negative for the manufacturer...and with no manufacturer, no phone. In the US, the manufacturer needs carrier support more than the carriers need an individual manufacturer.
In reality, I think HTC realizes this mistake due to the falling bottom line and is hopefully getting plans to turn this sinking ship around. After enjoying AOSP on the OG Droid to despising MotoBlur on the DX (and going with CM7) to actually enjoying the aesthetics Sense 3.5 and now Sense 4 (seriously, the Rezound should have had an OEM upgrade to Sense 4), my phone has been rock solid since launch day, exactly one year ago today (oh shiz, my warranty expires today!). I enjoy HTC's build quality and having an OEM-supported unlockable bootloader and a community-supported S-OFF initiative and wish them the best in turning themselves around. Never have I ever been so content with a phone until I got the Rezound...and a year later, I still love this device. It does everything I want and then some.
TL;DR - HTC needs to stick with the 'one' series and man the fudge up to the carriers.

@OP the thing is 99% of consumers could give a **** if the phone has a removable battery/SD card. Only the techies do. HTC phones are aimed at consumers, not techies.

There is only a very small percentage of people that actually care about more than 16 gigs if storage. You are one of them.

The weird thing is I saw a 32 gig sd card on ebay for the DNA. Which is weird considering no sd slot unless it's an internal sd slot like the early wp7 devices.

Personally, at 11gb usable, I think this phone will have a hard time selling, especially when following the Note 2 (only reason I could see buying the DNA over the Note - price. That being said, people are picking up the Note 2, on AT&T, for $199. Yeah, the DNA has a better looking spec sheet...but, it is DEFINITELY not for me). I would buy a phablet so I would not have to carry a phone (to listen to my music) AND a 7" tablet to read/minor surfing. Still need a 10" Tablet... All that said...I love HTC products. Bought the Inspire, upgraded to the Vivid, downgraded to the Inspire again, bought the HTC Flyer tablet.
With all due respect, if so few people care about no "more than 16 gigs of storage", why did Google drop the Nexus 8 gig line? Why is their no 8 gig line? I think the people HAVE spoken by saying if you ARE going to take our storage cards away, at least give us the option to increase our storage space from the get go. My guess is, you will see other "options" available as time goes on. Also, though we are seeing more phones come available with no removable battery/no sd card, my guess is there will always be people wanting those features. As we become more and more mobile and phones become larger, we will change our viewing habits from TV at home to watching them via phone/tablet. There will be a need for larger and larger memory options. Add the clamp down on internet usage, throttling, etc., people are not going to WANT to use a cloud for their music/videos, especially as we are primarily an instant gratification society.
Today, there may only be a small percentage who care about more than 16 gigs (I would tend to disagree with that statement but anywho). Tomorrow, the numbers will grow...and grow...and grow. Apple is expecting to double the 7" tablet market every year for the next 2 years. The more I do away from my 10TB of HDD space at home, the more I am going to need when mobile.

Verizon took away our unlimited , even thought ATT let their old customers keep it with upgrading
The DNA takes away removable battery , so if you run out , well your not carrying a mobile any more

I don't know about you, but I can clearly see the pixels on the Rezound screen from over a foot away. Now it may or may not be practical to make higher-resolution screens - on the Rezound, for pixels to become a problem in reading text, the text would have to be way too small to read comfortably anyway. But a screen on which I cannot see pixels would look nicer. And I hear the DNA screen, like the One screen, also uses thinner panels or panels of a slightly different material, so colors should look better apart from the higher resolution.
About the processor, I hear it will greatly improve battery life by managing power consumption better. I don't know if any dual core processors manage battery as well as the S4, but even if the S4's full power will rarely be needed, anything that significantly improves battery life is welcome.
I would not get a device with less than 32 gb total storage, so I am hoping that when I do get another phone (probably in two or three more years, or when my Rezound dies and there is a better phone for under $100), there will be a good device with at least 32 gb.
My Rezound battery generally lasts me through the day, but when I will not have access to power for a full day or more, I carry an extra battery, so I'm fine with non-removable batteries as long as they last at least a little longer than the Rezound's.

About the processor, I hear it will greatly improve battery life by managing power consumption better. I don't know if any dual core processors manage battery as well as the S4, but even if the S4's full power will rarely be needed, anything that significantly improves battery life is welcome.
I would not get a device with less than 32 gb total storage, so I am hoping that when I do get another phone (probably in two or three more years, or when my Rezound dies and there is a better phone for under $100), there will be a good device with at least 32 gb.
My Rezound battery generally lasts me through the day, but when I will not have access to power for a full day or more, I carry an extra battery, so I'm fine with non-removable batteries as long as they last at least a little longer than the Rezound's.

Ha. I don't believe you for a minute. I can see them if I put my eyes right up on the screen, but other than that they are almost indistinguishable. And even then I can't see them good. Will the 1080 screen be nice, sure, worth buying another HTC device that will take 9 years to never see a update, not a snowballs chance in hell. HTC might could win me back as a customer if they actually start updating their devices and listen to their customers, but until then, no thanks. The rezound will be my last I believe. I damn sure am not buying a device that doesn't have a removable battery. And the only way I am giving up an SD card is if it comes with a 64 gb variant. Which it doesn't. Even apple realizes this, so this nonsense from google and HTC about not including SD slots is stupid if you won't at least give us ones with 32/64 gb internal memories.

I normally can't see them either, but if I look at some diagonal line between contrasting colors that is not smoothed by making some pixels along the line colored between the two colors (such as the edges of the numbers in the status bar clock), I can see a distinct staircase-shaped edge.
Furthermore, I suspect you can too: one foot is quite close, and if I bring the screen closer than about eight inches, I can no longer focus my eyes on it, so one foot is close to the optimal distance for seeing pixels, and you said yourself that you can see then from some position.

Yes, but it does make the pixels distinctly visible, and shows that at 720p, pixels are easily visible, which is all that I was saying.
Just wondering if anyone has gotten a chance to use the htc one and how does it compare to the dna in all aspects. Since I don't think Verizon will be carrying the htc one

I was able to play with a one yesterday while at the mall and I say this with no disrespect to our devs.... But it's blazing fast and super smooth. Which makes sense since the software was made for that phone.
I will say this however.... Our sense roms are so close that it's pretty much negligible! :thumbup:

A friend of mine who is a VZW employee got one on ATT. He says it's the best phone he's ever used, hands down. He didn't provide a direct comparison/details vs. the DNA, but his simple statement says a lot - this is another guy who makes it a point to own and use almost every high-end handset that comes along.
My buddy who has AT&T just got the HTC One and he was let down by the build quality. His had gaps in the construction which seem to be common after looking online and his screen would do a ripple effect when touching the sides of the screen. I had this same issue with the Droid Incredible 4G LTE but that was a $0.01 phone and the One is a $200 premium flagship device. He returned his original one and got a second one that also had gaps so he decided to return it as well and waits for the S4.
Also the lack of Qi Wireless charging on the HTC One would be a deal breaker for me
One thing I really hate about the DNA is the small memory. I have about 20gb of music I like to carry with me and I can't with the DNA. This alone would be reason for me to got with the One. I tried putting it all on google music but I end up burning through too much data on my Verizon plan.
Browsing in the at&t one forum, the CM team developers all got the one, and they can flash international rims on there phones also. The ONE is going to BEAST!!! So jealous of Verizon, I wonder how Verizon is going to BORK the DNA+

I do a lot of DJ work so I love music. I have close to 800GBs of just music on my desktop and about 300 on my laptop so I feel your pain.
What I do is have my photos auto upload to facebook and I use cloud storage. One thing that is mice where I live is the local phone company has wifi nearly everywhere I go so I don't use data. If you want to put your music on a cloud server I would use Dropbox because Google Drive does not let you download music from the app to your phone where I believe Dropbox does. I use Drive due to the Google integration and fact that Dropbox's smallest plan is 100GB for $10 a month.
I know it's kind of a crappy work around but I figured since I only paid $50 for this phone that I can pay for 2 years of cloud storage for $60 and still only be at half the price of the One.
Plus I like the look of the DNA more.
Most of the reviews about HTC One I have heard are positive among my friends who bought the HTC One, I am really attracted by its cool appearance, but I don't want to upgrade to it since my phone is bought for only three months.
I currently have the Incredible 4G LTE Nd love but I need a bigger screen... I debated between both those phones... I know the HTC One comes out in the summer for us and the s4 will only be 16gb ... Is their a mod to put apps on the sd card since the s4 is limited... I know they coming with an update but we all know Verizon is bad with updates..

I had the HTC One before the S4 that I have now. All I will say is that as soon as the One drops on Verizon, I will be switching back. I test phones on a daily basis and the One is the best phone I've used to date. You won't be disappointed with either, but I prefer the One. Sense is much better than Touchwiz now IMO and the build quality and audio can't be beat. I prefer the screen on the One also

I didn't buy the ONE (or wait for it) because of the reviews. You might like the HTC ONE based on if you want metal build, smaller screen (equals 468 ppi to 441 ppi in S4 slightly sharper text) and the BOOM sound (front facing speakers). With no SD expansion or removable battery, that was a deal killer for me. S4 has better specs and is already made for the AWS network for Verizon (faster LTE speeds). Also, HTC is by far the worst EVER of getting updates out for their phones (yes, even worse then Motorola at their worst)

If you will be rooting, the only thing the One would have over the S4 is BoomSound and a nicer case. Being unable to swap SD cards or batteries would bug me. If all you need is a bigger screen and you can wait, why not wait a few more months for a Note 3 or One Max?
I had an Evo 4G before the S4 (I never rooted it), so I've got nothing against HTC. HTC doesn't seem to offer (read, foist on you) the suite of apps Samsung does. Samsung seems to be trying to push their content store to compete with Google Play, so I hope future updates don't add tons of bloat related to the Samsung app store...

I know that the S4 has expandable storage, but that only helps in terms of media (stuff that can be stored on the cloud anyways), not apps. Also, the One will no doubt be equipped with AWS technology, so that argument is invalid too if we are comparing Verizon phones. No removable battery but it makes it through a day of heavy use no problem.

I'd take the S4 all day long over the One. Just a matter of personal preference.
Doesnt HTC take a lonnnnnnng ass time or never to release source? While Samsung does it on day 1, yea good luck with HTC and the handicapped Roms for it.

The firmware update that allows apps to be moved to SD card makes your invalid argument invalid again.
I pick the S4 for the reasons stated. No expandable memory, no removable battery, HTC has garbage update schedules, and weaker specs.
But that would require root, something the common user might not choose to do. And S4 users are currently unable to move apps to the SD card

It all boils down to preference. Most people want good battery life and cool apps or software. I've used both and when the One releases on Verizon I will have both and use both,
... But to answer the question I will use the S4 more since the battery does last a bit longer and it can do some pretty cool stuff, but most of all I believe there will be more customization on the S4. Lord knows I am a customization fool,. Cheers!!!

This is certainly important if you do not want to root the S4. I bet there will be root apps that can redirect app installations to the SD card, if they don't already exist. And Samsung will probably get native full external card installation working eventually. Or they're going to see sales drop off as more and more people bump up against that limit, and scramble to fix it. Why they didn't do this in first place is beyond me - especially with such a small built-in card. Either they wanted to sell more of their own SD cards, they wanted an excuse to charge heaps more for just a little more memory, or Apple sued them into not doing it.
And batteries get old. It might need replacing. Sometimes.
I used to be a diehard htc fan since the original evo but after the one was put on hold, and the poor development and official htc support for the rezound, I doubt I'll go back. I will miss htc but they dropped the ball far too many times and I know it will happen again (maybe not for their current devices) even though they cannot afford to screw anything else up. So bottom line, do you want a pretty phone with nice sound and a slightly, yet not noticeably better screen? Or do you want a larger screen, insane amount of dev and Samsung support for years to come, and removable battery and storage?

First of all, I apologize if it seems like we are "ganging" up on you - after all, the question at hand is a fundamental example of free choice and personal preference. With that said, I did want to make one (yet to be made) point specifically pertaining to your (above) comment on validity.
You mentioned that, in your mind, one of the factors that makes the removable storage on the S4 irrelevant is cloud storage - something that the major carriers frequently, if not enthusiastically offer up as a must-have storage solution. Cloud storage really is great, especially as their capacities increase, security strengthens, and prices drop. However there is one major, often overlooked problem with using cloud storage on your cellular device - DATA. Many (many) Verizon subscribers that have managed to hold on to unlimited data (myself) find themselves playing a game of "chicken" every time they want a new device. There's only so many tricks and hoops you can jump through to keep your unlimited data - just ask the countless hordes who've recently reached their "end of the road" in terms of unlimited data (Tip: These sad-sacks are easy to spot - just look for the gently sobbing individuals solemnly mashing their "Scan For Available WiFi Networks" button), The point is, last I checked; you need some sort of internet/data connection to peruse the "Cloud" - this is all well and fine if you're still rocking "Data God Mode", but wouldn't it make you feel a whole lot better if you knew all that cherished media you spent years collecting was ALWAYS available to you? I sleep better knowing all my Seinfeld episodes are safely at hand in my Samsung 64gb Class 10 MicroSD Card.
But all kidding aside - having to rely on cloud-based storage for your files is a great way to experience full blown anxiety and frustration first hand, believe me.

However ...Stupidly, the excitement over the HTC Thunderbolt being Verizon's first 4G device was far too tempting for me and I bought the damn thing. It took almost two whole years for HTC & Verizon to update the Thunderbolt to ICE CREAM SANDWICH, despite having been released AFTER the first ICS devices were already out. Sadly, I never got to see that wonderful update on my T'Bolt ..... you see, six months (and several rage induced ulsters) after buying my T'Bolt I threw the damn thing accidentally dropped it over the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Too bad. Never again, HTC.

No, the update that is coming out will not require root. It's an OTA update that lets you move apps to the SD card again.

Thunderbolt was released in March of 2011. The first ICS device was the Galaxy Nexus which was released November 2011. Does not invalidate your point, though. I was a 'bolt owner, too. It was out for about six months before viable LTE phones were releases (Rezound, Bionic), and even those were not all that great. It got truly usable when Liquid 3.2 was released for AOSP and SkyRaider Zeus was released for Sense. Those were a LONG time after the phone was released, though.
I view it as an early adopter thing, not an HTC thing. We are going to experience the same thing with AWS. Odds are this phone will suck for AWS...the hardware is too far out in front of the service release...no way there won't be issues that are patched around, etc.
S-off will really help get the dev work going on the One. I think it is a perfectly viable alternative to this phone really. Just a different flavor. I have never had a Samsung phone so for me, that was part of the appeal...something different.
if you really want screen size and don't mind the wait, the note 3 will be coming out this fall. 6" with 8 cores - though i don't think it's been confirmed. i'd like to get one, but the note 2's 5.5 inches is kinda pushing it for me, and i have preferred that the s4 to be 16:10 instead.
YouTube benchmarks on comparisons... You may be surprised how much slower HTC one is.
If you don't like touch wiz, there's lots of options... I use nova launcher on cube mode and love it.
While many defend it, sense does eat up processor attention.
Main advantage with HTC is reading in bright sunlight, 95 percent of my reading is indoors, metal case is nice.
I like options for different batteries, external memory, better camera, better software.... To each his own but benchmarks alone mean little if those benchmarks don't depict real life use.
If you love the best camera you can get, go S4, if you listen to music through speakers then HTC, if through headphones S4 has nice equalizing software.
I personally feel real life pictures can be boring.. I like high saturation of Hd amoled screen.
The Hd mode on the camera makes a perfect picture in crappy lighting!
The S3 has up to a 7000mah battery avail, not sure what they will come up with for the S4 but I don't like bring limited. http://zerolemon.com/

This model dates back from 2011, and it never became a popular model, like some other HTC models.
I bought mine in 2012, and I use it to this very day. It's still preserved, almost in mint condition, even though I use it every day. It only has a little scratch in the lower left corner.
During these 2.5 years, the phone was taken only once to the repair shop (digitizer broke), it was around a year and a half.
Since then it works like a charm.
I never played video games (except things like Mahjong), I use it for internet, calls, messaging and I watch a lot of videos on it. Battery life is good, the only downside it hasn't received any official update for any of the newer Androids. It's really massive, and I like the casing. Some Samsung models (like Galaxy S2, and even S3) look like toys (light and plastic) compared to EVO 3D Interesting fact - I never used the 3D camera, and I never heard someone else did
What are your thoughts?
I use it as MP3 player and activated it on freedompop. Contemplating buy m7 since that has LTE. I am also using cm11 with no gaps with Amazon app store installed to preserve battery life
I was really hot on it and shelled out quite a bit when it appeared 2011 on the European market, and I will use it as long as possible for my money I consider myself not a heavy but steady user, that is I read my xda, newspaper pdf and my comics in a browser everyday. It has enough memory to preload my 30 comics web pages so when I commute by train an the net is spotty I can still read everything. Oh and yes, I indeed use it to take 3d pics every now an then, that was the original idea when I bought it back then. I use to take 3Ds with my regular 3D cam as well, and so my gallery's 3D pics take quite a share on the 64GB sd card.
anecdote: Just for fun I once loaded 54000 pics (a decade's worth of pics) on the sd card. worked ok, but the indexing of the gallery took forever, every boot...
Apart from not top speed compared to newer phones it still is fast enough, thanks to heavy modding and custom ROMs. No need for Lollipop so far, still on ICS.

i bought it on march '12 since it was cheap at the time (one s and one x were around the corner so i just picked a nice sale)! the phone is still capable of running basic things, and the only reason i would upgrade is camera, i simply hate evo's one! for the moment i'll keep it, i wanna wait and save some money since i want my next phone to be a BIG upgrade in every aspect! this is the reason i won't buy phones like moto g: it's a great phone, maybe it would be good enough for me, but 1gb ram really pisses me since i already have on my evo!

oh, and by the way, it survived a nice fall in a Sabaton's concert few days ago, not even scratched another guy wasted his nexus 5 instead

I still use my evo 3D because i have no money now to change it!
But I would have waited until this year anyway because this year there will be a revolution with the new 20nm processors of Snapdragon! (My dream would be the htc hima).
2014 it wasn't a year of innovations! if I were to change now my phone, I would buy a LG g2 for 250 Euros.
Then i will wait I think this summer or maybe the end of 2015 to change the phone, hoping that my HTC alive until that day!
Meanwhile I expect @Hahaburger continues its glorious project (cm12) on our phone! And with a 3.4 kernel I hope still in a sense 5 a day

As a mp3 player in my car, and activated on freedompop to stream music or even use GPS. Using CM11 no gapps with amazon app store and browser to side load apps not available. FP for what ever reason is not taxing data when streaming. Not at all complaining. I have also used it as a hot spot except spring 3G speeds are abysmal at best. I am surprised at how well streaming works most of the time
I bought mine last year for $50 including the hdmi adapter.
3d screen and camera are fun. They merit development even though HTC bowed out.
too bad ics is the only way to have that camera.

my evo does pretty well running a really stripped-down stock 4.0.1 with varying kernels (currently jcfunk's butteredtoast build) with xposed, aide, terminal.
alongside chroot armhf ubuntu 14.04 with xserver xsdl instead of vnc, which even allows a certain amount of gl acceleration from ubuntu.
no chroot sound yet have I figured out though.
It keeps up with the Toshiba laptop I was using until last year (though I had 2gb ram shoehorned into that) but I can't use the android build system on arm, even if I had something fast enough to use it properly.
I can build kernels and other software fine on it though, and have.
it entertains me while I work to pay the bills, supply the children's never-ending need for new commodities, and consider when I'll be able to save enough for a desktop to replace my poofed one that died in December.
my evo streams well sometimes, and 3g bites but it doesn't matter whether it's 'throttled' or not, it has the same top end speed.
good for the GPS and phone functions too. I use it daily for work, and gave up my $25 plan and optimus v for the GPS software, mostly. My V has limits on what it'll run with tiny ram and armv6.
If I buy one $35 plan once every six months, I can keep 3g radio accessible, and use droidvpn to hack it and get free 3g for next 5 months. I made a YouTube video about it

I have a 3d I got off a ebay for $8.00 it was dead but my blessed hands put life back into it, except it likes to touch it's self. Still think it functions as while as my G3 just with a smaller screen. If I can figure out what Chad G. did to the kernel to make it so fast, I will do it to the G3.
I use mine everyday at work streaming music.
Why am I still using EVO 3D
I ask myself that every day. Well, I didn't have to pay for it. My Mom had bought it new a few years ago, but didn't like how it would spontaneously do stuff - take pictures, call people, etc. She put it in a drawer and bought an iphone. When I lost my old phone (Samsung Rugby Smart), she gave it to me. I had to switch from AT&T to Sprint to do this, but they gave us each a tablet, so that was a big incentive (We love our Galaxy tablets and use them every day). That was about a year ago. I replaced the battery in the EVO 3D with cheapie I bought online, and that mostly solved the power problem, but the screen sensitivity thing has gotten worse.
I use it to take pictures and listen to audiobooks through Overdrive, but it is not a success as a communications device - it calls and texts people by itself and usually the screen locks up so I cannot end these calls once they are started. I can't make selections in a voicemail menu (most of the time). I would like to try rooting it but I don't think I know enough to manage it by myself. (Also I am not sure that Overdrive would still work). So I really need to either get this phone fixed or replace it soon. I need to have a dependable phone since I am looking for a job, but can't afford much on what I make now as a temp. Even if I had the money, I couldn't see spending $600+ on something that will be broken, lost, or, at best, obsolete after a year or two. So I guess I'm looking for a phone that's old and reliable versus old and unreliable.

When I lost my old phone (Samsung Rugby Smart), she gave it to me. I replaced the battery in the EVO 3D with cheapie I bought online, and that mostly solved the power problem, but the screen sensitivity thing has gotten worse.
I use it to take pictures and listen to audiobooks through Overdrive, but it is not a success as a communications device - it calls and texts people by itself and usually the screen locks up so I cannot end these calls once they are started. I can't make selections in a voicemail menu (most of the time). I would like to try rooting it but I don't think I know enough to manage it by myself. (Also I am not sure that Overdrive would still work). So I really need to either get this phone fixed or replace it soon. I need to have a dependable phone since I am looking for a job, but can't afford much on what I make now as a temp. Digitizer seems bad, lucky there easy to replace and cheap, about $7 now. It's a very common issue with the phone. Also at less for me, using the oldest or first radios and 56xxx prl, gave me the best 3G speeds. 1 Mbs down
Because I'm broke. And yes, paying an obscene amount of money for a new phone about every 2 years is ridiculous.
Cause I have a 3d TV and no one wants to buy it lol

Yep! Same here besides I don't even use it for a phone at all mostly for music, videos, & camera all on WiFi. Besides that thing is damn near indestructible. Dropped too many times to count ran it over once even dropped thing in bucket of water, hell to root tho.

It's sad for me, but I've been very lucky to find a buyer for my more-than-3 years old evo, so I caught the opportunity! It's been fun 'till it lasted, now I got myself a G3

Poverty
I still use mine as an mp3 player. I hate sense but with a good custom ROM it works well.
I'm still using mine because the Nexus 6P is not available I think that 4 years with the same smartphone have been a good run
