[Q] How to add a keyboard dictionary language - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tried searching and all I found was an unanswered post from 2011.
How do I add keyboard dictionary languages to AOSP based roms? (miui.us and norwegian in this case.)

Settings -> Language and input -> Settings icon right of "Android keyboard (AOSP)" -> Input languages.
In Norwegian that is:
Innstillinger -> Språk og inndata -> Innstillingerikon til høyre for "Android-tastatur (AOSP)" -> Inndataspråk.
Hope it is the same for you as it is for me, and best wishes.

Hi.
That's for setting the language I guess. But my ROM only contains the dictionary for US English. I want to add the missing dictionaries.

The system language is correctly in that menu too, but then you haven't pressed the settings button next to keyboard languages. See screenshot.

I don't know how to be more specific. My ROM does not contain the dictionary I want. The question is not whether I can select keyboard languages or not, but as the topic states: adding a language. Not selecting it.
Edit: Example: I select English and Norwegian. Only the English keyboard auto corrects or makes spelling suggestions.

Hmm, the only solution I know is to select highlighted menu below. Accessible by pressing the button highlighted in the previous post, but as you have already selected multiple languages, I assume you know.
May I ask what ROM you are using, and if you could post a screenshot of your menu or something?

Rom is miui.us and it looks pretty much the same as yours as it is aosp based.
The language selector shows most languages and they are selectable but the Rom itself has probably been cleansed for this kind of bloatware.
Question is, is there a way to sneak in some kind of language file or something?

I guess there is, but I think it is far easier to install a custom keyboard. SwiftKey free is available on Play Store, and SwiftKey flow beta is available on their site (also free), you can search on xda.

does this work on legend? it doesnt on mine but may be because needs to be rooted to work, the demo works and ive got it switched on for text input but doesnt actually use swype in texts or anything.
anyone else tried this?
It's working, even without root.

Maybe you have to google for a newer version.
It's working here also nicely. Using the open beta. Just wishing for more language packs, like German and Indonesian.
I s/l it and have it selected as the keyboard, but it won't come up as the keyboard.... am I doing something wrong?

The beta works flawlessly for me so far.. Make sure to enable it in your input options. Takes a bit to get used to and I definitely recommend finishing the tutorial (and I'm not a tutorial kinda person) and even reading the tips. It's wicked once you get used to it.
The keyboard will appear as below when properly enabled.

Far has I know it is still in beta over there in China.... but I can not read chinese....
Here are some pictures!
I really like this keyboard it has always been one of my favorites ever sense the first beta last year. now they have made lots of changes and it is even better.
When you install it it will be in chinese. you will need to go to settings and switch it to english.
Looks nice. Downloading now.
EDIT: Just tried it out for a while. Verdict: It's great!
Once you turn off the Chinese language, the text prediction is great, and the buttons are quick and responsive. I like the option to have different layouts for portrait vs. landscape (even though I just use QWERTY for both). The edit button is top center, and very handy, since I came from a G1 and the Vibrant has no trackball/d-pad to edit words. One note though, the delete button in Edit deletes the next character, not the previous. Not a huge deal, since the backspace on the keyboard still deletes the previous character and you could just select what you need to delete in the Edit screen, just a weird change. If you don't know what I mean, try it out yourself, it's worth a try at least
I love that style of keyboard with the two letters per key (Like on my original Blackberry Pearl).
@Phromik
Yeah it is a great little keyboard. my favorite feature is being able to swipe to change from T9 to QWERTY

I am new to the Android side of XDA just picked up my Vibrant 2 days ago and loving it.............
My favorite too......one of the first things I downloaded to my Vibrant and seems to work pretty well just missing the ability to save passwords or url or email adresses (one click entry in the username or password box for websites is really slick and I miss that the most). It is still beta so we will see if they implement it later on.
Link not working... looks fun though

Go to Market and search for Touchpal... is in Chinese but you can change setting easily
Um, why does the app need access to Contacts and Voice Recorder?
I ask, because we (in the I.T. dept) are being bombarded by Chinese malware and such.
The permissions do seem a bit excessive for a keyboard.
Requires these permissions:
Your personal information
read contact data
Network communication
full Internet access, view network state, view Wi-Fi state
Hardware controls
control vibrator, record a

First of all install this keyboard, then go to settings/language and keyboard/there you will find your keyboard, select it. Then go (for example) to writing message, long touch on writing screen and select Gingerbread keyboard. That's all! Nothing difficult!

Does this work on Honeycomb, as the official beta version of Swype doesn't work due to screen size and HC 3.2 issues.
The lack of Swype on HC was one of the main reason for going back to GB

sweet thanks.
What are the chances of getting a dedicated row for numbers across the top like a normal computer keyboard? I hate having to switch modes or long press when entering lots of #'s
Hi.. Nice application you have.. Is there any Bahasa Indonesia? I didn't find it on Swype setting. Thank you
I works on Honeycomb in Portrait, but in Landscape I cannot see what I am writing.
I work in GinggerBreak ,
perhaps with HoneyComb -screen resolution is not 1060 * 600 anymore ????
As you see, the upper part (shown in Browser) is not viewable. If I toggle (hide) the Honeycomb statusbar with the Statusbar Widget the problem persists.
Works fine with Flyhigh Rom 1.2 - thx!
Only problem: it does always correct my words to english (from german input). Is there any way to stop auto correction or install another language?
very much appreciated
Update new vesion: Smaller, more funtion - English only

Text field still not visible on Flyer Honeycomb Landscape only. But Swiftkey X Tablet is working now, and have you tried free Vlingo speech recognition https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vlingo.client - our iPhone Siri for the Flyer
Has anyone running honeycomb tried Swype with the stylus?

[Q] Custom Keyboards - Plz Help.

I think I've downloaded about a dozen keyboards, googled a million images, but I can't find what I want.
Why do they all have stupid keys and menus in additional rows that I can't remove nor do I need taking up my screen space.
I think Go Keyboard was about the worst.
This one isn't too bad because the keypad size is adjustable but I still don't need their stupid menu keys.

I just want a fully functional keyboard that looks clean.
Predominantly white.
And I do want the ability to add the arrow key row.
Scalable keys / keypad is also a plus.
I don't want big keys.
I don't want big spaces between keys.
I don't want 3d or bevelled keys.
I don't want additional keys or menus.
Can someone plz help.

I like it, but i cant find any option for swipe input or the arrow keys?
Are there feature unlocks in the trial upgrade?
There's no next word prediction?
And you have to type the full word and space just to get prediction for the current word?
