[Q] Why there's no "plain USB storage mode"? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tested both CM v10.1 and ARHD v18.
Neither has a "plain USB storage mode" for the internal/external storage.
I mean, I would expect the phone to behave like a "usual" USB memory stick when plugged into my PC.
Instead I only get MTP and PTP modes which don't work well with my Linux boxes (my house has no windows at all!)
Any advice?

Theres currently no way to use the internal memory as a USB device since it uses the MTP protocol.
However you can use your external SD as a usb device using SGS3 Easy UMS. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009

Search on Google, it's a design of jelly bean, decided by Google, to secure internal emmc and to be able to use dynamically all the internal space for data. Internal sdcard is in fact a folder in data folder virtually mounted as a device by android os. On the contrary before that internal sdcard was a separate partition.
That explain why it can't be mounted as usb mass storage, which is only possible with plain partitions.
There are ways to bypass it either with the above mentioned app, either with a tweaked kernel.

While I can understand the limitation for the internal storage, I don't really get the point with the external storage.
The limit just makes things harder: I could eject the uSD and push it into a reader...
By the way, which kernel supports USB storage mode for whatever storage?
I run cm 9 / cm 10.1 .
Thanks.

You can use Easy UMS to mount the external card in mass storage mode

Yes. But why needing an extra app when it is a built-in feature with other (cheaper) phones and ROM?
Why, if the recovery (PhilZ Touch 3) CAN DO IT?
This was my original question, though.

[Q]Mass Storage only external SDCard

Hi,
I'd like to know if there is any way of selecting mass storage mode only for external sd_card. When I conect to a PC or any other device, if I select mass storage mode, both internal and external storage connects, but I would like to connect only external one (the sd_card itself). Is that possible?
Just for the record, I'm using CM9 now, but I haven't found this option on any of the roms I've tested.
Thank you.
Just remove the sdcard from microSD slot and insert it to card reader ._.

I'm sorry, maybe I didn't explained it correctly... Of course, this is a way to access the sdcard, and I know there are some other solutions, but it's not what I was asking. I don't want to remove the battery cover each time I want to access the sdcard. I don't want to wear with me a card reader always...
There are some cases in which I'd like to use this feature. For example, my car stereo has an USB port. In case I connect the SGS2, both storage units connects to the stereo, but it only detects one of them, in this case, the first one (internal Storage). This has 2 problems, the first one is that I use the external sdcard for music storage, and the second one is that some applications that stores data in the internal sdcard stops working.
I know there are many other ways of doing things (using a usb drive, removing sdcard...) but I just wanted to know if selecting only external storage was possible.
Thank you.
I`m interested into this too...
Phone forgets ringtones selection when they are stored on internal card after card disconnected from PC
Is there any way to mount only external SD card?

[Q] Create FAT32 Partition for Mass Storage Mode?

I just got a Nexus 4 and have found to my despair that it doesn't have Mass Storage Mode due to the sdcard becoming integrated with normal data.
I really want Mass Storage mode, as I use my phone as a memory stick for various educational purposes, including running various executables directly from the Mass Storage.
Is it possible to create a 1GB, or so, FAT32 partition from the normal ext4 space and allow that to be mounted as Mass Storage?
If someone could point me in the right kind of direction for that, I would be much obliged.

[Q] Formatting internal storage to FAT32 without PC

Hi!
Ive been wanting to format my internal storage/usb storage (the 11gb storage) to FAT32 so i can see my files with a dorimanX kernel (using apolo but wanna try the dorimanx gpu undervolt). So far I havent had much success.
The thing is, my usb port is kinda bad (can charge perfectly but cant be detected by the PC unless theres a constant strong push to the cable and the port) so i cant transfer files physically (i use air droid or a card reader)
Ive tried formatting my internal storage with CWM but i do not see the FAT32 option. Is there a way to format my internal storage to FAT32 without a PC? Thanks!

the 'default' option will work fine (this will format your storage as vfat, which is similar to fat32). You should be able to see partitions on dorimanx after that.

Mass Storage

help!! I need an application that allows me to handle the internal memory of my phone samsung s3 international version from the PC as a mass storage device and not as multimedia .
If your trying to say to convert an sd card into internal storage, change your rom to to an android 6 based one (i.e CM13) and there is this sd card setup allowing to let you use it as portable or mass storage.

I'm around trying to say that I want to use internal storage memory of the phone as a mass storage drive , I tried some apps does not work
Oh, that isn't really possible. A phone cannot be converted into a mass storage drive for PC. You will need a proper hard drive in order to do it.

[SHARING][APP][ROOT] USB MASS STORAGE Enabler

This app is for mounting your External SD (Memory Card) in Mass Storage in your rooted phone..
It does not mount internal storage, and it will not work if your device doesn't have External Memory Card Support..
(And this app automatically sets the SE Linux Enforcement to 'Permissive')
Note:
This will work only if there is FUSE driver built-in in your kernel..
This won't work if SD Card (Memory Card) is used as Internal Storage from Marshmallow 6.0, since it's formatted as an EXT4 partition and encrypted.
Steps to Enable UMS:
1. Connect phone to Computer or TV or DVD or whatever.
2. Open the 'UMS Universal' app and press 'Enable UMS' and give it root access.
