New to sgs2....some help please - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys..I got the sgs2 from a couple of days to try it out ..so I have a couple of questions...
What's a firmware ??does it affect flashing ROMs or kernels ?
How do I flash a kernel ?
What's Odin?
Does cwm come with the kernel ?
In case i got stuck in a boot loop and I didn't have a nandroid backup ..is there any other way to restore phone to stock ??
does every ROM need a certain kernel ??or all on the same one
Am I able to flash all ROMs that are in the development section
Sorry for asking lots of questions ..but I wanna know what I'm doing ...
Thanks in advance

I personally think it's quite weird you don't press the thanks button for TheATHEiST, but when you get an answer you like you actually do. These all are the basic questions when it comes to rooting and flashing etc., and you clearly didn't seem to take the effort to read and search for yourself.

I would suggest Odin back to stock or restore from your back up, or go into recovery and wipe the Dlvik cache.

Then your not running stock. I've read a few of the threads you've started and come to the conclusion that either you really need to read more before doing anything to your phone, or your just trolling for posts.

You need to help yourself before anyone here will be willing to help you. You've been a member for 5 months, and you've made almost 80 posts, yet your questions consistently indicate that you do not read enough to understand your phone and how it works, yet you post that you do things with your phone that you don't understand and don't know how to correct.
Odin back to stock and leave it that way until you understand what you are doing.

Search is your friend. . Look for one click return to stock, should get ya going again. For future ref, read twice, flash once. If you're diligent and follow directions here to the T you should be good to go %99 of the time.

good. Now enjoy it as it sits now and once you read up enough to understand how to flash a custom rom, then give it another try.

Unlocking bootloader required?

Hi
I have an S3 coming tomorrow so decided to check out the forums and get a head start.
I have gotten a little confused, my first android phone was the xperia play which requires me to unlock the bootloader to flash roms and is also reliant on being an unbranded version.
Is this not the case with the S3? I have done alot of reading already but don't quite understand the process.
My phone will be an orange handset, so is it just a case of flashing cwm and then flashing a Rom? I'm also used to using fastboot which I believe isn't compatible with the S3 is that correct?
Sorry if this post is annoying but I need to get things straight in my head as alot of what I'm reading goes straight over my head lol
Thanks for any help

Welcome to samsung. They dont behave like morons by locking bootloaders. If u want to flash a stock rom pc/mobile odin is the tool. For custom roms u just need to get cwm to flash.

@OP - I'd better not see you bump a post after 9 minutes on here ever again :-/
I'm not interested in how important you think your issue is, this is not your personal tech support forum. When you make a thread, you wait patiently for an answer. Bumping your thread after not getting an answer within 9 minutes is a good way to have people ignore you (which the person who did answer you should have done to make the point).

hey buddy, u r new to all this rooting and flashing thats Ok.
and also ur interested in knowing more about the same thats also fine.
but ur handicapped with just ur phone to do everything, which is not good.
since u need a computer and internet connection, so that in case if something goes wrong while doing things on ur phone, at least u can get help via PC from XDA or google to resolve ur issue.
hence my advice to u is, do please get hold of a pc with net, may be a friend of u might help with the same.
also u have to do some probing on XDA regarding
1) how to root my phone?
2) what is downld mode and recovery mode? etc
hope u understand for now

Please help! Won't boot after root

Hey guys,
I've seen similar posts but can't find the answer, sorry if this is repetative!
I tried rooting my Samsung galaxy 2, gingerbread 2.3.3 on Odin. But it is not turning on now. The yellow triangle comes up. I am able to access download and recovery mode.

Go to www.sammobile.com download a stock firmware, flash through Odin, reroot.

I can't find 2.3.3 on sammobile only 2.3.6... does this matter? Or is there somewhere else I can find it?
Title adjusted
As was pointed out, it's always best to give a more descriptive title than 'Please Help'. I see you've got a few people helping you, good luck with it - it's usually a step you missed (I've done the same). Always read up and understand what you're doing before you do it, saves brain cells

u have very less or even outdated rooting option on GB, better to upgrade ur phone to stock ICS v4.0.3 (dwnld the stock ICS v4.0.3 firmware pertained to ur region on www.sammobile.com and flash the same using 'ODIN'.
After successfull flash and booting of ICS on ur phone, u can use Siyah kernel( .tar file for ODIN) to root ur phone by flashing the same vide ODIN
U might have corrupted ur install. If there is no VERY important data, i would recommend you to wipe data/cache and download a new STOCK rom and install using odin hope this helps. P.S. Only use odin and stock rom it has less chances of bricking the phone.

Kernel flashing

Firstly if there is already a thread on kernel flashing I'm sorry but I couldn't find it as i am new to xda forums and could you kindly leave a link to that post ? If not, I have recently a few months back rooted my gs3 i9300 with cm10.2 (just recently flashed ) and since I'm a heavy user for games on my phone I tend to drain my battery a lot and I noticed that my phone kept getting hot (40+ degrees) and was thinking of flashing a kernel. Any thoughts and precautions on flashing a kernel and how do I flash one ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Stick with stock on cm10.2 mate. best bet.
I9100/I9300
Kernel is just a boot.img and when you flash one, it replaces the previous one. Roms all include a kernel so if you flash a kernel you don't like, reflash the rom to get its kernel back.
More info in "understanding the basics before rooting" which can be found by following the link in my signature to general > sticky roll-up
