[FIX] for semi-brick on 3.15.651.16 JellyBean stock RUU - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

The issue
If you flash new 3.15.651.16 JellyBean RUU and it only updates hboot to 2.09, phone might end-up in semi-bricked state.
RUU refuses to flash any other partition (even if bootloader is in locked/relocked state) so its impossible to return phone to stock rom.
Error message from fastboot flash zip is;
Code:
fastboot flash zip RUU.zip
sending 'zip' (659905 KB)... OKAY
writing 'zip'... INFOadopting the signature contained in this image...
INFOsignature checking...
INFOrom parsing start ...
INFOrom parsing finish ...
INFOzip header checking...
INFOzip info parsing...
FAILED (remote: 22 loading zip info fail)
What is causing this
Hboot fails to read ruu-info from new encrypted zip after hboot-preupdate and stops flashing process.
Solution
Solution is to flash firmware.zip from JellyBean OTA. Firmware.zip is "old style" zip file, hboot can open this zip and update radio and sbls.
Fix
- Download JB OTA firmware from http://unlimited.io/jewel.htm
- Download fastboot executable (google)
- Put all files in one directory
- Reboot phone into fastboot mode
- Make sure that bootloader is Locked or Relocked. If bootloader is Unlocked, relock it with command fastboot oem lock
- Enter commands
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash zip jewel_jb_ota_firmware.zip
NOTE:
If you see FAILED (remote: 90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediately) text after running fastboot flash zip command you have to run fastboot flash zip command again.
After this flash stock RUU again.
Permanent fix
- S-OFF your phone. With S-OFF phone you can always flash decrypted, unsigned and/or older RUU and get phone working again easily. :good:
Please report any success / failures into this thread. Also tell little bit information about your device, like;
- What hboot you had
- Was radio flashed through recovery
- Was hboot downgraded
- CID

I ran this... Worked to a T. Debating whether or not to s-off...
But, this did in fact update my radios..
Phenomenal. Just to be clear with what I did...
Ran Fuses instructions. Then I did the RUU GUI update in Windows... back to stock, Tampered in bootloader removed. Testing the stock radios and what not, but so far it's perfect.

*** Phone has to be RELOCKED****
I am not sure if I am successful or not right now. Phone is showing HTC black screen with green bar below it. The green bar is not ALL the way across, looks like 95% after running the commands. Not sure what to do so I issued "fastboot reboot"
Phone looks to be in bootloop so I got back into HBOOT.
First I relocked the phone. Rebooted. Then Rebooted into fastboot.
Then ran commands, screen shots are attached.
Seeing this message after running commands:
FAILED (remote: 90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediately)
Changes noticed in Bootloader:
My RADIO updated from 1.02.12.0427 to 1.12.11.1119
OpenDSP updated from OpenDSP-v25.1.0.32.0405 to OpenDSPv31.1.0.45.0815
Update:
Put the phone into fastboot and then ran the windows Jellybean RUU. Looked like the RUU got about 98% thru and then gave me a USB error. Then the phone rebooted and it looks like everything updated. Phone is booting into JellyBean. Should I retry installing the RUU?

Cloves
Rerun the ruu. Just hit the up arrow and then enter

I don't personally have a need for this but I know others do so thanks! Nice to know this is there if needed.

Thanks,
Everything looks good. Phone shows RELOCKED and 4.1 is running. Thanks for the fix!

saved my ass. thanks!

Fastest way to get support for DirtyRacun is to join #unlimited channel on freenode.
Lets keep this thread clean, semi-brick on 3.15.651.16 stock RUU stuff only.

Well guys, time to add some info. If you lock and re-flash the RUU file and you get "SBL VERIFY FAILED" errors (but the RUU still completes) and you can't htcdev unlock (signature failed), you should use this fix. Helped me get my friend's phone S-off using Dirty Racun.

if we're running stock JB (newer hboot), then we can downgrade it to stock ICS (older hboot) via RUU

Yes it is true, but always download full stock RUU and use that. There is some problems with repacked firmwares.

After I typed rebootRUU my screen changed to an HTC screen and stayed there for like 30 min, I tried to flash the zip but my phone wasn't recognized. But ever since that exact moment my computer has f***** up. Does anyone know why this happened

Probably windows dropped fastboot-drivers. Try installing drivers again or use Linux, ubuntu live-cd works just fine.

Probably bricked my Flyer, need help

Hi!
Yesterday i managed my Flyer to S-off via revolutionary tool.
Today i wanted to update to Honeycomb with this tutorial:
+
Google search: android.modaco.com Installing Honeycomb on your Flyer
Guide from Paul.
i got now stuck after the htcdev bootloader unlock.
i should transfer the cwm recovery file via fastboot into the flyer
command: fastboot flash recovery revolutionary-cwm-4.0.1.4-flyer.newhboot.img
Code:
< waiting for device >
sending 'recovery' (4682 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.753s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.198s
Why this is failed? i tried to do the next step, getting into clockworkmod recovery but nothing happens.
My Flyer shows now:
Code:

Fastboot 9v AC (because charging)
VOL UP
VOL DOWN
POWER
Bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down
What can i do now? any idea?
edit: adb don't work, fastboot works.
I'm going crazy tried to reunlock bootloader via htcdev. When i flash the unlock token i get same error
Code:

Why in the world would you use the htcdev unlock? Go to flyer development and follow globatron's honeycomb guide. Much better than voiding your warranty.

i did yesterday exactly those steps from globatron for soff and cw recovery.
For getting Honeycomb i used another guide yesterday.. because i found this site today..
I really dont know what to do now

edit:
made it now with other version of fastboot... this is crazy..
so i unlocked again and now i can go on with the other steps?!
I would return to stock then use globatrons update method. Do you know your stock ruu
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
is going back to stock via ruu possible when i changed hboot, radio and boot file?
the guide from paul says:
Do NOT under any circumstances run the RUU in it’s entirety nor ‘fastboot flash rom.zip’ – this will make irreversible changes that you don’t want!
Be careful if you flash any RUUs or do anything that could revert you to S-ON on a broken system – this could leave you stuck
i think i will recharge and go through the last 4 points..
im afraid
Try to get a new unlock token.
I can not see why running your ruu to stock.would be an issue but I am not 100% certain. I did a revert last week and the only thing I needed to do prior was relock hboot first which you are already locked.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
first i wanna say thanks for your help!
i did today the last two steps after recharging the battery.
last 2 steps are putting the new image onto sdcard via adb and second step was factory reset und dalvik wipe. All two steps worked fine for me, but after restart the flyer is going to a bootloop.
what should i do now?
Should i get back with the RUU?
Can i setup honeycomb after getting back with ruu with the tutorial from globatron?
best regards
tom
did you flash the zip through recovery
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
^the tutorial say get into clockwork recovery mode and type into command "adb shell mount /sdcard && adb push stock-hc-flyer-system.zip /sdcard/"
this command finished after 3 minutes and i was also lookin at the sd card the file is on the sd card.. after this i wiped dalvik and made a factory reset in the clockwork recovery mode. Afterwards Reboot -> then bootloop
lool is it possible that i have to " install zip from sdcard" ? if yes i'm the dumbest flyer user on the world *g*
edit: i tried now to install the update via recovery, it says E: Can't open /sdcard/stock-hc-flyer-system.zip (bad)

help fully bricked htc flyer p510e
here is what i did step by step:
bought an htc flyer, then upgraded it officially to honeycomb
i did not like honeycomb so i unlocked bootloader with htc dev method
then flashed recovery and rooted....
changed the misc_version and downgrade back to gingerbread with fastboot flash zip rom.zip
it worked........gta 3 and gta vice city worked.......few months later the gta 3 and vice city started crashing( just like honeycomb)
so i got s-off with revolutionary.....and flashed honeycomb PG41IMG.zip
that worked...........few months later i wanted gta back so i could not take i tried flash back down but did not work...it would get stuck in RUU mode ...so i flashed PG41IMG.zip back and that worked ..i was not bricked...so i tried another method
i flashed fastboot express downgrader.nb0 and
flyer downgrader.nb0
then changed gingerbread rom.zip to PG41IMG.zip and placed it on sd card
went into bootloader and let it flash
the bootloader at this moment:
***security warning***
pvt chip s-on
hboot 1.10.000
..................
it does not show whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked......no recovery.......tablet does not boot.....only to bootloader and fastboot.....
i tried to flash the unlock token for bootloader but get
signature failed error....
i tried to flash the honeycomb PG41IMG.zip but get
checking header failed
remote[signature failed]
cant flash anything because of that ...cant flash recover to even turn off the verification signature check.....
plz help ...whether you help me to fix it back to gb or hc to dont care ..just want it to work
plz help me fast
battery charges but phone goes into fastboot .....
plz help
just ask if u need more information on the situation..
plz anyone
Should probably find a good RUU that is compatible, create a gold card and do a clean re-load of compatible ROM.

Lock Bootloader Error

Ok so I'm trying to relock my bootloader to RUU to the new ics leak 3.13.605.7, but I can't get fastboot to re-lock the damn bootloader. It gives me this error when I type
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Code:

INFOTZ_HTC_SVC_DISABLE ret = 134086000 (0x7FDFD70)
ERROR: usb_read failed with status e00002ed
FAILED (status read failed (No such file or directory))
In Hboot it says:
***TAMPERED***
***RELOCKED***
***Security Warning***
but it wont boot. If i pull the battery and press the power button or select reboot in the bootloader, it takes me right back to the Hboot screen. I can re-unlock it and restore a nandroid and its fine....
I'm not sure what the problem is because I've re-locked my bootloader before to update to the march ICS RUU...
Any suggestions guys?
are you S-OFF?
if you are you dont need to relock the bootloader before an RUU. just run the RUU.exe and you'll be fine
if your not S-OFF, i have no clue
It will not boot until you run an ruu. Rerun whatever one you're currently on before attempting to run the new one.
I personally would reccomend becoming s off before running any other leaks.

you were prolly on more or less stock software, wich did not trigger a security warning
now that you are on software that it recognizes as incorrect for your firmware, you are locked into hboot until youeither:
a)re-unlock
or
b)run the correct ruu for your firmware
thats what the security warning means. restoring a backup of the unmolested stock rom that matches the firmware before relocking will avoid the security warning hassle in the future.
tampered is from installing a custom recovery, and i believe should disapear once youve relocked,RUUed,and have the stock recovery.
again,i believe you will have less hassle if you flash the 3.11.605.22 ruu prior to flashing the 3.13.605.07 ruu, based on the funkiness that happend to me when i flashed 3.11 overtop of business sense

then i would find a PC to borrow for s-off. assuming its still works with the 2.25 hboot
you could then roll back to whatever version you wanted.
i would also try doing a factory reset or clear storage in hboot, with the stock recovery in place. it seems to fix 4g issues, maybe it will help your prollems as well.
edit: what "kernel issues" ?

FOUND SOLUTION..............
You have to download the RUU that matches the HTC Software on your phone. Go to settings > about > scroll down to Software Version and google search the RUU that matches.
Enable USB Debugging and let phone sit at home screen.
Run the RUU exe from withing windows on your PC wait for it to finish and and it will wipe phone in the process.
After it is done, boot to fastboot and run the HTC Unlock Token command again and this time you will get the prompt on the cell phone screen.
I spent 6 hours plus trying to root my wife phone wile tetherd from my Epic Touch GS2.
Samsung side of the world is a WHOLE lot easier. Everything is done within Oden for Samsung devices.
Anyway, there you go guys!

That's what I was recommending, except you don't have to relock your bootloader before running the RUU and unlock it after if you are S-OFF. And here's the downloads for the current RUU so others don't have to Google it.
Glad it worked for you.

apperantely people didnt read the htcdev website while unlocking. it clearly states it doesnt work properly unless on a 2.17.651.5 rom
htcdev.com said:
HTC has identified a known issue that may be experienced by some users with a Sprint EVO 3D that shipped with version 2.08.651.2, even if it was updated to a newer software version via FOTA. When attempting to unlock, a blank screen appears on the device after step 12 in the instructions and the process does not complete. As a workaround for users who experience this issue, we suggest you upgrade the ROM to 2.17.651.5 first via OTA then download and install the RUU from the table below to fix the issue before attempting the unlock process. This issue will also be fixed in the ICS update scheduled for EVO 3D.

That's odd, because the OP of this thread stated that it failed with hboot 1.5, which would indicate that he was already on the 2.17.651.5 build.
In any case, it appears that HTC unlock wants a pure stock configuration, so running either the 2.17 or 2.89 RUU before flashing the token should work.

And 1.58 is the stock bootloader of the official Sprint ICS build, which is where HTC said it would be fixed. Of course it depends on how he got the 1.58 bootloader but the OTA should have been fine, and at least one person said they had problems unlocking after taking the OTA.

The firmware updates don't update you 100% to the 2.89 build. You need to flash the 2.89 RUU to do that, as has already been pointed out in this thread, and for some reason the HTC unlock appears to work after that. I really don't know what the difference is between taking the OTA and flashing the RUU is, but they should be the same.
For someone like you that is already S-OFF, you could always flash the JuopunutBear 1.58.5858 bootloader if you need to run the 2.89 kernel and get most of the benefits of the ENG bootloader. However, that bootloader will not work properly with GB and AOSP ROM's.

That's good. Now you also know that flashing the 2.89.651.2 RUU.exe will let you do the HTC unlock with the 1.58 bootloader.

I concur. I'm not a novice when it comes to unlocking bootloaders & rooting phones. I've unlocked more bootloaders through htcdev.com than I can count & this gentleman is absolutely right! HTC really needs to get it together! Samsung devices are so much easier to work with. You don't run into these stupid little problems with Samsung phones. Usually, what goes for one Samsung device goes for all!
I digress, but anyhow, I'm well aware that reinstalling the operating system on an EVO 3D via an RUU will allow the token that you get from htcdev.com to work, and I have used this fix several times in the past on the last Gingerbread OS (Software version 2.17.651.5), but here's my issue. I have an EVO 3D with S-ON & a LOCKED bootloader that was updated over the air to ICS & when I go to unlock the bootloader via htcdev.com, nothing happens & HTC claimed that this issue would be fixed with the ICS update, but guess what? It wasn't!
Nonetheless, you would think that reinstalling the ICS operating system (Software version 2.89.651.2) on the phone via an RUU or a PG86IMG file would work. Neither one works for me! Every time I go to run the ICS RUU, it throws back a 170 USB connection error & this is crazy because the RUU that I have for the last Gingerbread OS (Software version 2.17.651.5) never throws back any type of errors! It has worked on every single EVO 3D that I have had to use the fix on! I have tried running the ICS RUU several times and have used several different USB cables & have had no success whatsoever.
So what I did from here is requested for someone from the XDA community to create a PG86IMG for me so that I could see about reinstalling the ICS OS on the phone through the bootloader (Shout outs to Karl! He came through on this right away. Karl you are the man!). Unfortunately, when I go to use the PG86IMG file, it does all of this loading & appears as if it's going to work but ultimately goes back to the HBOOT home screen & doesn't give me an option to install the f'n operating system! This sh*t blows & I am all out of ideas as to what to do from here. I am basically stuck.
On anther note, I tried to use the ICS RUU that I have on another EVO 3D with no success, but I was successfully able to reinstall the ICS operating system on this same EVO 3D via the PG86IMG file that Karl provided. What in the world is going on here?! If anyone can offer any helpful advice, I'd certainly appreciate it. Thanx in advance. (On a side note this other EVO 3D that I was able to reinstalled the ICS OS on via the PG86IMG file has an UNLOCKED bootloader & is S-OFF. I don't know if this makes any difference, but I thought I'd share this anyway.)

The 170 error means that the RUU.exe can't find your phone. Make sure the phone is in "fasboot USB" mode in the bootloader, then try running "fastboot devices" from the PC directory you used to root your phone. It should come back with a serial number that starts with "HT". If it doesn't, you may have a problem with the USB port on your phone, although it probably won't go into fastboot USB mode in the bootloader if that is the case. If you get the serial number, try running the RUU.exe again from there. If you get a 17x error with the RUU.exe, usually restarting it will get past that error as long as you have the proper connectivity to the phone.

[Q] Bricked(?) DNA - Locked, S-On, no recovery, stuck at fastboot

I'm somewhat of a noob at this - this is my first HTC, so I had no idea what S-Off or unlocked bootloader meant. With my Samsung, rooting and installing a custom recovery involved a one-click method, so I never had to learn all the ins and outs of this stuff. With this DNA, I used the revone method (since the phone was purchased with 2.06 firmware already installed), so I still didn't need to learn much.
Anyway, I recently tried to go back to stock. I figured that would involve an RUU, going back to S-On, and locking the bootloader. So I first (yes, before performing the RUU like a dodo) used revone to go back to S-On, then found something saying I needed to execute "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3", so I did that, and now I am stuck at fastboot. I don't have access to CWM recovery, and if I try to boot beyond fastboot it hangs on the initial HTC screen.
Without being able to use ADB since it doesn't boot that far, I can't go back to S-Off via revone. I can't flash anything that I have been able to find so far via fastboot because it fails at signature verification. And I can't use the RUU that I found because it is firmware 1.15 and it won't allow me to install on top of 2.06.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Is there a way to get to S-Off through fastboot? Is there an RUU for the 2.06 firmware? I have spent a few days searching and the answer to both seems to be no...
UPDATE: I grabbed the Rom.zip out of the 1.15 RUU and tried flashing that via fastboot (in RUU mode). I got the following message:
sending 'zip' (913111 KB)...
OKAY [ 35.667s]

I assume this has something to do with the firmware version difference (1.15 vs. 2.06). But I was very excited to see a signature check be successful for once.
I should note that the ROM I was running when doing this was Newt's NOS m7 v 3.0.6
When selecting recovery from the fastboot menu, it does nothing?
If that's a yes... You need s-off again.

It doesn't do nothing per se, it shows a screen that I'm not used to with a red triangle and exclamation point on top of a picture of a phone with a blue background. I assume this is the recovery screen from the factory, not the CWM recovery I had installed previously.
Is there a way to get s-off without ADB (only using fastboot)?

I successfully flashed the firmware zip from the moonshine thread, but the phone still will not boot past fastboot. I assume since the instructions for moonshine require the phone to be booted to android, this option will not work for me.

I've been thinking about this. Why did the firmware zip from Moonshine pass signature inspection? Was it signed? Could that same signature be placed on a rom or some other zip that installs a recovery or even somehow performs s-off? I know I am not very well experienced with android development, so I'm probably talking out of my ass.
I recently flashed the RUU from fastboot.

Then your pretty much out of luck. Need to exchange it or possibly do a jtag. Does your phone say tampered/relocked? If so then I'd guess Jtag is the only solution.
Unfortunately the guide you used to go back to stock was pretty dumb in telling you make your phone s-on again. It isn't needed especially if it was just so you could do a clean install and flash other roms.
I was in your situation, but I was lucky enough to have unlocked my phone using htcdev when Jcase released his original unlock method. If the super cid method still works. I would unlock my bootloader the super cid method and not even bother with moonshine. That way you end up with a unlock token and wouldn't get stuck in this situation.

Nothing was wrong with the guide. He didn't follow it correctly as he did s-on using revone.
Flashing the firmware zip should allow you to boot up and run moonshine. Are you sure it flashed correctly.

Correct, the guide was not at fault here, I am just an idiot. Here are the results of flashing the dna2.06firmware.zip file from the moonshine thread: http://pastebin.com/GkgdGt19
Following what is shown at this link, I executed "fastboot reboot-bootloader", selected "Power Down", and then tried to turn the phone on again. I got the same result as always (stuck on the initial HTC quietly brilliant screen - not the bootanimation screen).
Spoke with beaups on IRC. I was running a 4.2 rom that will not run on the stock kernel. Since the only thing I can flash is the signed stock kernel because I am s-on, the only remaining option is to run a 2.06 RUU. However, the 2.06 RUU has not been leaked to anyone's knowledge. So I will have to send off for jtag in order to get s-off, then flash whatever - RUU, custom ROM, what-have-you.
Thanks all for trying to help. I will hang on to it for a while if anyone has any other thoughts or suggestions.

I talked to beaups last night about the same thing... Hes a good guy. I'm in the exact same boat. I hope there is a break through on this but if not I guess JTAG is our only option. Let me know if you figure anything out jdpalmer, i'd really appreciate it.

It's possible you might have supercid, although I doubt it
You could try
Fastboot oem writecid 22222222
Reboot
Fastboot oem readcid
Did it change?

[Q] Not able to install recovery after RUU (S-OFF, Unlocked)

My phone was acting buggy with the radios and had HUGE performance issues. To be frank, i think a SNAIL was faster than this phone at the time... I am S-OFF, unlocked and i cannot flash recovery.
I get this output and error:
Code:
sending 'recovery' (8516 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.087s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: image error! (BootMagic check fail))
finished. total time: 1.129s
here is the current HBOOT Config and display:
Code:
FIREBALL PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
CID-VZW__001
HBOOT-1.15.0000
OpenDSP-29.1.0.45.622
eMMC-boot
Just for good measure i re-wrote the CID to 11111111 and locked and unlocked the bootloader again to no avail, thinking it was possibly that being unlocked during an RUU. The thing is, while unlocked, the RUU still processed... Oh and the phone boots up fully. i have ZERO issues with actually using the phone, but i cant believe i am stuck on a stock rom and not allowed to flash a custom recovery... >_>
Other thing... just to see if this would help, i used junkmail9's ENG HBOOT with the RegawMOD Customizer to flash the ENG hboot to try my luck. STILL no good. i can flash hboot directly, and whatever else, but is recovery just stuck??
i really want to be free again, so can someone please explain to me why after an RUU even WHILE S-OFF and unlocked, that i cannot flash recovery?

You did not mention either the recovery image you tried to flash, nor the command you used to try and flash it. There's no point in messing with bootloader lock/unlock if you're s-off. Just leave it alone.
my apologies... well basically, i cannot flash any custom recovery for this phone. CWM 6.0.3.1 which i had before the restore, and i just tried the philZ Touch 5 recovery which is basically the same thing as CWM... for some reason, the recovery partition became locked after the restore despite being s-off. i remember this error before while s-on and locked when I used to have the Wildfire S.

hello users of the almighty xda!
I have obtained s-off using dirtyracun and flashed between team venoms viper rom and cyanogenmod10.1 multiple times
this last time I tried to flash back to viper2.2.0 from cyanogenmod because of the problems with the m2 snapshot I wiped everything as usual including cache, data, and even a factory reset and installed the viper rom and said everything was good to go and now the phone wont boot past the htc screen
so I figured i'd reflash the viper boot.img to see if that would help and doesn't
not only will it not boot but when I go to the bootloader and try to enter recovery it flashes and I see the clockwork mod symbol and then it boot loops back to the htc logo endlessly
wtf! ugg! any ideas oh great xda users?
p.s im also under the impression that because im s-off I cant RUU back to stock is this the case?

This is not true. You may at any time run the RUU to restore borked programming. Besides, the dirtyracun method of flashing s-off is risky to say the least. I used facepalm s-off and it was stupid easy. Anyhow, run the RUU and then immediately run a factory reset. The RUU formats and repairs all partitions on the device and the factory reset restores the radio and baseband as described by mdmower.

Do the following to prepare for RUU-
Run these commands in order:
fastboot oem resetRUUflag (wait for reload)
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash zip name_of_file.zip
Alternatively, you can run the automated HTC RUU utility, but it often fails vs. A manual reflash.

ignore please, came late and didnt notice
gonna try it
thanks for the response. I agree the dirtyracun method is pretty risky, but at the time I think it was the only s-off method I could find
well I will ruu then
thanks for the detailed fastboot commands and such
I don't have to relock the bootloader do I?
