I do not own these codes I just copied them or the first idea of modding the camera.

As I was browsing through some topics here I came across this one by umangleekha (credits to his idea)
So what I did was flash the zip (yeah the image became clearer but the camcorder goes into force close!) so maybe the mod won't work on ICS rom (HepHappy's final rom)
So what I did is make some experimental adjustments (technical way of saying copy and paste ) of words and values from here to here.
After modifying the media_profiles.xml (which was the flash file in umangleekha's zip) still the stupid camcorder force closes.
Then with the idea of backporting omx libs. so why not backport some ideas from gingerbread too?!!
So i grabbed a stock rom from sweetnsour's list in here. and get the european version whatever that is. compared some files here and there and found some additions at the build.prop.
I added these to build.prop

As of today 1-18-2012 I decompiled the camera apk, and set the exposure's default to 2! At the xml file. Forgot the exact name. IT WORKS! everytime I open the camera, no need to set it before taking a shot. :) only, it dont work on other cam app like pro capture.

THE ATTACHMENT IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP!
it only contains the build.prop and media_profiles.xml
you can copy replace the files using any root browser then make necessary permission adjustments.
Test if this is works.

You can extract the zip. Then paste the media one at /etc folder and the build.prop at /system

Tweaked HTCCamera.apk:
1. iso 1250 enabled
2. hdr enabled
3. panorama enabled
4. Resolution for 3D camera is increased to 2048x1152
5. Long Tap to screen makes photo
6. Front Camera 2MP unlocked (but I can't see any difference)
7. Front Camera auto enhance enabled
8. I think, it is not difficult to increase sound bitrate for example to 160/192k. But Is there any sense for it?
There is no option to choose 3D camera resolution, so you always will shoot 2048x1152 with this mod. To check if it works you can upload 3D photo to PC and check it's resolution. Should be:
w: 2048 x 2 (4096)
h: 1152
If you found a bug:
1. Reboot phone
2. Install and run android application "catlog", press "menu"->"Record"
3. Launch Camera and take video till camera FC
4. "catlog"->"menu"->"stop". Log file created in /sdcard/catlog_saved_logs/
5. email me with attached log file: [underscore]iga[underscore] at mail.ru or reply with attached log file in this post.
Method that I have used to install camera:
1. place it to /system/app/folder
2. EZ Explorer, select and press on file /system/app/htccamera.apk
3. install app
4. manage applications/camera/clear data

1. You probably will need to make system partition writable (gain rw access)
2. Link to camera disappears after installing. It is ok. Just remade link from ALL APPS
3. You probably will need to reboot your phone
4. You may try to fix permissions (via recovery or ROM Manager)
Tested only on:

SW: Virtuous Shooter 1.02, build.prop tweaked for 48MB per app heap.
Warning: I don't have problems with tweaked camera, but be careful! I'm posting camera "as is".

Thanks to m-deejay for great Virtuous Shooter ROM. His camera was taken for base, so Panorama mode and settings with video bitrate are from his ROM. Other tweaks were made by myself.
I can't deodex HTCCamera.apk from CDMA ROMs, so I was unable to take anything from it.
HW information for geeks:

Tried to set different resolutions more than 2048x1152 for 3D.
- 2176 x 1216 - libcameraLN.so says "invalid picture size"
- 2048 x 1536, 2560 x 1920 - mm-camera( 142): do_mmap: pmem mmap() failed: Out of memory (12).
HTCCamera use libcameraLN.so (2D library) for stereo capture.
There is also libcameraSP.so (3D library). It has similar API, but with 3D postfix in API.
--- Burst Mode ---
Burst mode can't be activated with current version of libcameraNP.so.
(If I activate it, I see in the log:

1. Did you copied camera to right place ? (for Virtuous Shooter 1.02 it is /system/app/)
2. Did you successfuly installed it (with EZ or any other app)?
3. Link for camera after installing always disappear. Please check Camera in all applications and just remade link on desktop.

With RootExplorer go to system/app,then long pressing the app
you have the option to see the permissions for the app.
Remember permissions,then replace the old app with the new
and change the permissions such as in the old.
Reboot and done.

Ya, i tried vignette app on market(full version) and it gave minimum 4 MB pic in 8Mpix mode with superfine setting
But its UI is very complex and slow, thats why i don't recommend it...
What always happens with me with vignette is-As soon as i adjust the settings, the object changes its position and the shot goes in vain

I know what you are saying, but try the vignette app and shoot 1 steady object from camera app and vignette app
Both will give same results on device, but as you will transfer them on pc, you can easily spot the difference

Try "HDR Camera Pro"
In my opinion Camera360 takes slightly better pictures than the stock cam (with quality set to 90%, not 100% since that forces the same compression as the stock app).

As this will only work for rooted phones(as you will need something like RootExlorer to change the file), you probably will have some knowledge in modding your phone, so here is a little How-To to do it yourself(tested):
You need apktool, SignApk, zipalign (search via forum).
- Copy system/app/SemcCameraUI.apk to your pc
- Copy system/framework/SemcGenericUxpRes.apk to your pc
- Copy system/framework/framework-res.apk to your pc
- apktool if framework-res.apk
- apktool if SemcGenericUxpRes.apk
- apktool d SemcCameraUI.apk
- find file "CameraController.smali" in extraced folder "SemcCameraUI\smali\com\sonyericsson\android\camera"
- insert these two lines at line 994 (next line after "setRotation")

Could you supply some samples? I'd just like to see whether the capturing of fine detail has improved a bit.
But if we already tweaking, can we port 2.3.4 camera apk to 2.3.3.
I asking because i dont want use 2.3.4...but i want use video recording Zoom

BUT, the real problem in both files is this:

Chroma subsampling: 2x2
This means the native driver is using 2x2 chroma subsampling (regardless of compression level). I am not sure if it is possible to change this to 2x1 (like K800i or most digicams use). If it is possible it has to be done on driver level (though i tend to believe this is some hardware limitation).

I'm new to android and development and this is my first modded apk
After great thread on ray forum I tried to dig and try different settings.
this is my final version of the apk, I don't think that the quality can be improved any more without modifying camera lib files.
*In this version you will get more camera MP options:5MP 4:3,3MP 4:3(only in GB)
*All the bitmaps changed to ARGB_8888 for better quality.
*Tried to enable inPreferQualityOverSpeed and inDither to the bitmap
*APK icons changed to ICS icons(in GB version)
*Jpeg quality is 100%(In GB version, In ICS it configured via mediaprofiles.xml)
*video bit rate is 6Mbps(stock) - the best value in terms of quality\size
3 versions attached:
GB version(based on Ray's camera apk)
ICS-based on original Arc S apk.
ICS+5MP-based on original Arc S apk+ 5mp option.
The GB version works on my Ray -2.3.4 .58FW.
ENJOY!
NOTE: After days of checking-auto mode takes photos in very high ISO rating(even during sunny day , outdoor!) so try to use manual mode!
Portrait scene takes smother photos and Party scene is for indoor photos and it preffers lower ISO but lower shatter speed (1/16s~1/5s)- so hold still the phone to avoid blurry images
And please make comparison photo before replacing the apk!

there is no support in camera driver(***sony)
I will mod ICS version in future if you confirm that the quality is improved.
It seemed that sony have solved the compression problem on ICS
But I just have some question: the photos are now ranged from 1.7-2.9mb on my xperia Arc S ICS ,how about yours(your cameraUI)?
I have once seen that the photos were 5.xmb on my 7MP's digital camera
so ICS still didin't totally solve the problems right?

its the same (2~3 mb)
Android sucks because Uncompressed jpeg not supported (jpeg 12 in photoshop or 120%)
and I wasnt able to save as png.

since I don't have ICS I cant test it myself- try on your risk and share your findings(bugs?)

I modded the original ARC camera apk - thanks to charlesfu4.
It works for Arc. I tried last night. I don't know if is there any difference btw modded version and stock one.

And I have noticed that the Before shot was at OFF scene (1/32s ISO 500) and the After shot was at Portrait scene (1/50s ISO 640) so its hard to compare.
Can you take the same photo at OFF scene again(like the Before shot)? - thanks!

First of all this is not a guide to build a rom from source.
Instead of downloading roms made by other users,you can make your own
And this is not a guide for NOOBS it is for NEW USERS who don't have enough knowledge to build custom roms.
NOTE : I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE
Things You Need Before Starting :
*7zip/Winrar
*Notepad++
*A Working Brain
Follow each step carefully to get a working rom.
1-First download the .zip file according to your device provided below and extract them.
2-You will get two folders;system and META-INF.
3-Go in system folder and open apps folder.
4-You will find all the system apps here,remove bloatware if necessary.Two Most important files are Home.apk and SystemUI.apk which are faces of your custom rom and without them your rom will be like a pizza without cheese.
5-Replace Home.apk and SystemUI.apk with the one you choose.(You can find plenty of them on XDA,Just keep in mind don't put paid launchers like Apex Launcher Pro as it is not allowed on XDA)
6-You can also replace Browser.apk,Conversations.apk,MusicWidget.apk,SoundEnhancement.apk,Phonesky.apk(There are many themes versions available on XDA),SemcMusic.apk according to your choice.Now you are done with apps.
7-Now go to media folder and replace bootanimation.zip with the one of your choice,you can also add extra ringtones(But I don't recommend this as this makes your rom heavier)
8-Now we are done halfway.Lets head on to build.prop.(Its device specific don't replace it just edit it)You can find build.prop tweaks in next posts.
9-Now go to META-INF/com/google/android and open updater-script with Notepad++(This is what you see while flashing the rom,so keep it short and helpful)
10-Again put this modified folders in a .zip and give your rom a good name.
I recommend to use Devhost for uploading your roms.
And you are ready to open a new thread on XDA for your own Rom
And ya,don't forget to test it yourself

Download THIS .zip and Extract It.
Add The Files From Folders In The .zip To The Folders Of Your Rom.
And Add These Lines To The Updater-Script In META-INF Folder(Not Needed If You Are Using My META-INF) :

Procedure For Extracting System Files From .ftf
Needed :
Flashtool
WinRar
ext2explore
Steps :
-Download the latest .ftf file for your device.
-Open it using Winrar
-Extract system.sin from the .ftf by using WinRar(Alternative : 7zip)
-Open Flashtool.
-Go to Advanced>Sin Editor And Select the file(system.sin)which you had extracted and click on Dump Data
-The .ext4 file will be created in the same folder in which system.sin was located.
-Open ext2explore.exe(As Admin)and navigate to the folder containing .ext4 file and open it.
-You will now get access to the system files but still they need to be extracted.To extract them from .ext4 right-click on the needed folder and select extract.
-Now you will get the needed folders to cook your own rom

If I use Root explorer and replace framework apk and home apk and then edit the build prop and do whatever else I want to customise the rom then backup with CWM will I get the same result?
Will others be able to install my backup?
I will try your method as building from source requires programming knowledge.

Yay finally a way to extract system folder with new ftf thanks!
and for the great tips
If you are using googlecamera or for example miui camera or any camera app other than Htc stock camera you will notice that maximum video resulution is 352x288. I edited media_profiles.xml so now max resolution will be 720x480. For those who like 800x480 there is mod too.
Just download file and place it in system/etc, just backup old media_profiles in cease to restore it.
This is not flasable zip. Extract it and copy to system/etc
