Flashing a System.img File onto my Photon From Another Photon - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello Everyone, I have a question that might be a bit of a noob question.
Can I take a NANDROID back up from one photon (namely the System.img file) and flash it onto a different photon?
The reason I ask this is because the last time I bricked my photon I was unable to SBF back no matter what version I used. I tried everything and I eventually stumbled upon this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798145 and was able to get my phone running again. However, my phone runs like absolute CRAP now. Its really embarassing when people see my phone struggle.
My brother has a photon too. Unrooted untouched fresh. I was hoping if i rooted his phone and made a NANDROID back up I could take the files and flash it onto mine and get back to a point where I atleast have a phone that works reasonably well.
Thank you,
-Jeff

What are you running now? System version, etc, etc.
And please look at the rules for posting. The development forum is not the place to be asking questions.

Imho, you'll be far better off flashing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837757
Doing a nandroid restore probably works, but you really need to do that from the bootstrap recovery mod (again, imho).
Just go to the thread above, and if you have further questions, post there. I'll pick up any questions as I see them. If you're wondering, I use the SLIM ROm on my phone, Mof's work is beyond merely good.

Thank you tdhite. This ROM is the only one ive been able to flash!!! My phone is running much better

[Q] How to create a flash-able/Odin of my New T959UVJI6 Samsung Vibrant.

How do you create a flash-able/Odin of my New T959UVJI6 Samsung Vibrant?
This will be my back up (FLASH /ODIN), because there will be some Fresh ROMS that will be released soon, and I want to make the Jump, but I have to at least have a back up.
Knowing how to create this image (or what ever it is called) will help me share more to this community, I would be more than happy to share this image here, and to test more roms, apks, kernals, or patches & updates knowing that I am free to Q.A. the releases if I had a stock image that I could flash or odin at the end of the week or at the end of the test cycle.
Model Number T959UVJI6
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Kernel Version: 2.6.29
Build Number: ECLAIR.UVJI6
(I have searched numerous times and the search is not available each time)
I don't think it's possible to create a custom ODIN complete flashable backup yet. It's been worked on but so far not successful -
Here's the original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794425
There are stock images for both 2.1 and 2.2 that can be flashed via ODIN, though. All are easily found in the stickies.

Hay Shrivel,
Thanks for the reply, I get the stickies - they are invaluable to the members here.
But most of the stuff out there are at best still in beta, buggy and were configured for or from another user and still needs tweaking.
My phone is like a virgin, and I really don't want to flash her because once you flash, it can become extremely challenging to back to stock.
There is a lot to say about stock, yea it's slow and not as robust, but it is free of bugs.

Getting back to stock is really easy - you just have to make sure you can get into download mode reliably and you have the proper drivers on your PC. It's getting back to the current state of your phone that's the tough part (well, not THAT tough, if you know the steps. But not yet possible in a single step.)

safe too root?

I just wanted to make sure first if its safe too root and it wont affect future upgrades?
So far im liking the phone which is my first android phone and 2nd android device with my galaxy tab
And really liking the speed of it heck its faster than my galaxy tab which is overclocked at 1.4ghz and running voodoo kernel , Imagine the atrix being overclocked That's if it ever comes too that hopefully in the future.
But ya would like too root it at least for now .
If you arent comfortable flashing or not having an easy way to go back to stock, I would wait. The Stock ROM* that is listed in these forums is not easy to go back to absolute stock with, at least not for beginners. You have a possibility of messing some things up if you dont read thoroughly and know what exactly is going on. A lot of these posts in this sub forum are DEV related and shouldnt be performed by someone without a good knowledge of ADB.
Also, just a heads up, this really isn't development related. It should have been posted in the Q&A forum.
Moved to Q&A as not android development
whoops sorry i thought it was suppose too be in dev thread but thanks for moving it
So just rooting it you cant go back too stock easy if i have too? I saw superoneclick can root and unroot it but just wanted too be sure it wont effect any upgrades,
1) How comfortable are you with command line tools?
2) You may f*ck up your device (may.. not likely but still). How confident are you that you can recover it, even if it's coming on the forums and getting detailed information to help someone here help you

Just rooted and everything went fine
Well im not sure about this device but i did recover my galaxy tab that i thought was bricked from a bad kernel flash and had too flash back too the stock firmware and got it back too perfect than i flash back too the voodoo kernel and its working perfect
Usely i can probably recover any device as long its not 100% brick.
But my main question was will this effect new firmware upgrades and stuff?
On my galaxy tab it wasn't a problem upgrading too one of the sprint updates when rooted but it wouldn't update when it was on another custom kernel, So i guess it will be fine on the atrix when rooted?

[Q] How to: upgrade Bell Atrix running France SMB

Hello All,
Back in April I flashed my phone with the only (at the time) SMB? for bell, . I used a guide to get my phone to build number OLYEM_U4_2.1.1 - GreyBlurred.
I find updating Android so confusing - iPhone was a lot easier :\ but Android rox so here i am.
I've been all over trying different methods to update my phone with no avail. At this point, I don't even care if i lose my app data.
What is the best OS i should run on my Bell Atrix, and how can I do it? Any forum links would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
There you are, everything you need from start to finish.
Make sure you read and understand every line.
After you flash your first rom with those instructions, and feel comfortable with flashing, I suggest you try out both cm7 and miui. Cm7 is original looking android with tons of new features and settings. Miui is a sexy slick looking rom with tons of new features. It's kind of like IOS. But still holds true to android customizability. The procedure is the same with all roms in the first thread i linked, but once you've done all of those things once, you can skip down to "Installing a Custom Rom". No need to re-unlock your bootloader and re-install custom recovery.
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=olympus (download #20)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383721 (some bugs, but awesome rom)
Feel free to ask any questions/pm, but this should technically be in the Q&A forum.
Cheers!

Remember. Always backup!
Well first off make sure you have Clockwork Recovery installed on your phone.
(you have to be bootloader unlocked for the full recovery to be installed) If you haven't unlocked the bootloader, make sure you go to the development forum and read up on how to do that using the "international pudding"
Once you have clockwork recovery installed, head on over to this thread and download the gobstopper that you'd like... I would go for the 2.3.6 updated one.
This is a bone stock bell rom, and its the EASIEST way to get back to stock bell.
Thanks guys! CM was a waste of time since I'm on an Atrix... I dont know if that rom is made for the Atrix - it doesn't say so on the site. Now running GB 2.3.6 Thanks a bunch!
Olympus is atrix's codename in cm. It is made for the atrix.
But glad to hear you're running gb!
Wow Bell_GB_2.3.6 has amazing battery life. 3x better than before! Yippeee

Point in the right direction pls

Ok firstly im no stranger to Android, and not entirely new to Moto (Atrix 4G), but I have to say that the RAZR has me pretty confused.
I have a Rogers RAZR being delivered that I picked up on the cheap. Its brand new and supposedly "unlocked". I would love to get ICS running on it, but despite reading the treads here for the last couple of days im still uncertain if its possible
I have used RSD before with the Atrix, but it was only to apply a patch that would allow you to unlock the bootloader (also surprised to see that the RAZR is still locked down). I know that you can flash ROMs via RSD, but what I do not understand is whether or not root and custom recovery is required? I assume that if you're flashing an official ROM, then no it is not. Correct? I also thought that flashing full sbf files was dangerous to attempt. Maybe im way off here, I don't know.
Im still a bit confused about the GSM patch for CDMA ROMs too. People seem to report issues with their phones when this is done. So im not too sure that it is a good idea to go that route either.
I understand that when things start to happen for a phone in terms of ROMs, recovery, work-arounds etc... that it can get a bit messy in the forum and things can get buried a few pages back, but i've been reading until my head hurts and i'm still uncertain where to begin. Also, there is an update that is also "supposedly" beginning this month for official ICS, but we all know that could be delayed, and delayed, and delayed. Wondering if I should just wait.
I guess I'm really hoping for someone to say do this, then this, and this...viola! I don't need an in depth step by step as I know how to figure out instructions from their respective threads. But if someone has a min to post a point form list like
Root with Motofail
Install Boot to CWM
Flash this ROM
Then this ROM etc etc...
Any help is appreciated and I hope no one thinks im asking to have my hand held here, but im at a loss. Just don't want to F my new phone when it arrives.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help a fella out.

A. Yes. If you're flashing an official rom you do not need root/cwm. Flashing full sbf with rsd is safer than cwm restoring a nandroid backup. But if you do you'll not be able to receive further otas updates. Bootload is locked in Razr also there's a region signature verification. So you cannot flash another region rom. :/
Im still a bit confused about the GSM patch for CDMA ROMs too. People seem to report issues with their phones when this is done. So im not too sure that it is a good idea to go that route either.
A. Most of related problems on that is due bad procedure following.

A. There's one official update for latam razrs, like yours. The 2.3.6 > go into dev section and you'll find out. Ics will out in a month. Fingers crossed!

[Q] Help getting to neutrino ROM??

Just order a new atrix 4G. I have looked at the possible ROM's to use and I want to try out the Neutrino ROM. I have rooted devices before but I am new to Motorola devices. Please help me find the CURRENT steps I need to take to get to be able to run the Neutrino ROM? I have used the search bar but a lot of the threads that I have found contain links that are no longer valid. Such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600 Also I read a this link http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/motorola-atrix-4g/ which has me a worried that I may end up having an issue because all of the guides or seem to have been written before May 15th.
Thanks for taking a look and sorry if that was a little confusing I just didn't want to get flammed for being lazy. In the end I just want to know the most up to date way to get to the Neutrino ROM?? Below I will have included the specs. If I need to post anthing else please let me know
I recieved my phone last night and set it up on Striaght Talk.
System version: 45.31.0.MB860.AsiaRetail.en.03
Model Number: MB860
Android Version: 2.3.4
Your help is GREATLY APPRIECIATED!!
Also on the youTube videos they all seem to say "DO NOT DO TRY TO UNLOCK OR ROOT IF YOU HAVE 2.3.4 OR IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!!"
Is this still the case or has there been a work around for it yet??
you have to unlock bootloader, but you can get FAIL with last step.
If you will get fail - don't worry, you can still unlock it via fastboot (tested on mine INTL Atrix, but every phone is a little bit different)
flash recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, flash rom, flash gapps. Done
Thanks ovitz. Can you point me to a thread describing how to unlock the bootloader on this phone?? I can do all the other stuff that you said I need to do after the bootloader is unlocked(clearing and flashing). Just really dont want to mess up my phone. I got 2 actually one for my girlfriend as well. I have java and all SDK/ADB and all programs that I may need. Just want a step by step for comfort.
Is the search not working for you?
http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/1136261/
The thread is sticky even.
DISCLAIMER: I used this to unlock the BL on my Atrix, but mine is an older one, dating back to around Feb 2011. I do not know if this still works on brand new devices, however I am not aware of any other way to unlock (there probably isn't any other way really).
What is the other way (not using fastboot) to unlock this bootloader?? I tried fastboot oem unlock and got this message "INFOOEM unlock is not implemented"
Do I need to use an SBF with RSDlite or something to make this possible? If so please point me in the direction of that thread!?!
Thanks for anyone that can help

Sorry ravilov...Did not see your post as I had started a post and then ventured off to seach XDA and some other forums again as well. I have gotten to the link that you posted several times. I just saw that is was posted a long time ago and that there is a lot of things in that post that dont make too much sense to me.
First it says "All phones If you have unlocked then try to use 2.3.4 update zip from Motorola servers, then revert back to a "pre-unlock" version(1.8.3 or earlier on ATT) you will get bricked! Do not use the OTA via experimental servers and revert to older versions WITHOUT pudding preinstalled in your sbf. ATT ONLY Get your 1.8.3 with pudding from the pudding/unlocker section below."
Then shortly after is says "Disclaimer: Tested on 1.8.3 and 2.3.4 using sbf_flash and RSDLITE 5.3.1 or higher, usual warnings being responsible for your own actions yada yada"
So I dont really know if it works or not on the newer atrix's. I dont want to brick a brand new phone and I would just like to see that some one else has done it recently. So yes my eyes are open and search did work for me if you did not see the 2 other threads I mentioned. I just want something up to date, not from early 2011. If it can be confirmed that this works or If you know someone who has unlocked it recently, that would be great to hear from them.
Thanks for posting the link to that thread anyways though. Much apprieciated!
Can anyone tell me if the IHOP method to unlock bootloader will work with my phone?? I cant post in that thread because I do not have enough posts. Here are my specs so I could get some help with which patch to use with RSDlite.
System version: 45.31.0.MB860.AsiaRetail.en.03
Model number: MB860
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: N_01.100.00R
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #3
APflex version: GAS_ASIA_USAOLYGBSEART_P011
GAS_ASIA_USAOLYGBSEART_A003
GAS_ASIA_USAOLEMSEARET_M001
Build number: 4.5.2A-74_OLE-31
Something else I want to note is that it was bought on ebay as unlocked so I am assuming that is the radio. When I set up the APN for straight talk it did have the choices for AT&T US, AT&T US HSDPA, AT&T US Tether, AT&T US MMS. So this is why I am a little confused/scared as to which piece of pudding to use. It looks easy enough to unlock and clear the caches and flash the ROM I will want to use. Just would like to know which one to use.
Please, please somebody help!!:fingers-crossed:
Thanks you for taking a look to help. Much apprieciated!!!
For a phone with the Asia Retail firmware, you'll want to use RSD Lite to flash the IHOP SBF. Your phone will likely enter a soft brick as stated above, just proceed with the unlock commands in fastboot from the error screen.
Since its an international phone, if you don't load a new ROM soon after unlocking then you'll need to flash the "RAMfix" from the Development section here. Most ROMs have that built in to the kernel, though, so it's not needed if you're going directly to a ROM.
In case you need it in the future, you might want to locate your stock SBF for Asia Retail and keep it on hand. If you see the Atrix Firmware Superthread in the Dev section, find the later Page that has new links to updated download sites. It's a post with a link to all Gingerbread firmwares and a link to all Froyo firmwares. Yours will have "searet" in the name. Make sure it's the same version, 2.3.4. Flashing anything older will brick you.
Good luck!

Quite welcome.
APNs are usually set by your SIM, if it's provisioned properly and the phone supports it.

Good to know About the APNs. Just to let you know I unlocked, rooted, and flashed the ROM the day you first replied. So I've been running with a new ROM for 3 days and the battery life is great!!
If anyone out there has installed the Neutrino ROM, I have one more question. On the Neurino ROM page it say to do these 2 steps:
"Then, after booting, click on script manager, navigate to /system/etc and run NitroCharger.sh as ROOT and at BOOT!
It is also HIGHLY recommended to download the GPS Mod found in #2. Then you're done."
I tried flashing the GPS mod but I keep gettng an error. Then on my first boot I tried going to /system/etc and from there I do not know where to locate NitroCharger to run it for either. Any help on these two issues would be great!! Also another thanks for everyone for taking a look and helping.
I would post in that thread but I still dont have enought posts.
You really need to reread the original Neutrino thread, since all of this has been answered countless times.
YOU DO NOT FLASH THE GPS MOD DIRECTLY. Open the ZIP and read the instructions.
NitroCharger is only available as an OTA update, but you might reconsider if you really want it since it's been known to cause issues.
Again, I know the thread is very large, but whatever questions or issues you might have, it's very likely answered there already.
Thanks you for just answering, even though you think I should just reread the thread. That answered my questions very fast. I will just not run Nitrocharger, I thought it may casue problems if I could not get it to run, instead you said it is the opposite. As for the GPS mod I just did open up the .zip and read the readme. I pulled out the United_States.zip
Can I just use CWM recovery to flash the US.zip now or do I have to clear all my caches and the likes beforehand?
I know your very busy and I apprieciate the time you take to just look at it.
I have just started my own business and it is going great!! but I have been working 14+ hour days with usually 9 hours hour doing very hard physical labor 6 days a week!! I need to hire more employees soon, lol. I read the whole IHOP thread from front to back and the Neutrino thread but I was very exhasted and stayed up until 330 in the morning doing it!! So again I thank you for taking your time I appriciate it very MUCH that you are helping me to have a fun android experiance and also to learn something new to me!!
Yes, you can just go ahead and flash United_States.zip. No need to clear anything.
Awesome your the MAN!! Thanks again  :good:
