is there any possibilities to root an unrooted tf201 with jb 4.1.1? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

hello everybody,
I am new here though I've been wandering here for a while looking for advices. Do I need to introduce myself?
I finally decided to ask directly in a new topic hoping that this was not already asked (I looked a lot but nothing directly answered my question).
well as a student, I would like to use my university proxy wich uses a .pac file and the only app that allowed me to use .pac files needs root. Furthermore I'd really appretiate to have a ubuntu flash on my TF201 and this again seems to need root. I once tried to root my TF but it was like the first version of ICS. Since then it seems that I've completely lost root so I was wondering if it was possible to root JB even tough in the end my ICS was not rooted. I also wanted to try a downgrade so that I could root my ICS and then update and finally reroot my JB. But I didn't manage to find a way to downgrade a TF201.
If it has already been asked then my apologies but I really looked around maybe I should have looked more.
thank you very much

You can only root Jellybean if you are unlocked and have a recovery installed like TWRP but if you do that you might as well install a custom rom with root built in.
You cannot downgrade to ICS unless you did the nvflash process while on ICS and kept the files created during the process.

thanks for the answer, I will look for a custom rom though I didn't know I could flash a room with built-in root, that's good news if ever I manage to unlock my prime.
thanks again.

This is not quite true there is an alternative...
Android and Linux, having a similar heritage, makes it possible for us to get root access over the Android phone if you are running with root privileges within Linux.

Don't know how to get this to work, but i am working on it

If I knew a bit about unix programation I would gladly try to find a way to get root access by myself but that's not the case I'm just learning about HTML and java so I'm a long way from this knowledge. Anyway if anyone find something about this I'll take it. I looked for unlocking my bootloader but it seems quite dangerous (risk of bricking my device) since I don't have a way to backup.
anyway thanks for your answer

I have no idea what he is quoting above but without unlocking you cannot root jellybean if you have Linux or not.

I cant remember reading about anybody bricking while unlocking. As far as I know the primary way to brick a prime is to install the wrong recovery for your bootloader. If you are on jellybean via an asus ota update you cant use CWM as your recovery and you can not install the TWRP that is meant for ICS. So unless you pay no attention its pretty hard to brick your prime.

So if neither TWRP nor CWM work as a recovery for my bootloader (I got an OTA jb update) can I still unlock my bootloader? Are these 2 things part of a same thing or are they different? (if the recovry tool doesn't come with the unlocking tool, is it necessary or just highly recomanded?) In fact if somone could explain me a bit more about that recovery tool maybe I would come to understand what I am sayingˆˆ.
Thank you very much!

What you can use after you unlock via the Asus unlock tool is twrp for jellybean. Once you have that you can install any ROM built for the jellybean bootloader

You misunderstood what whycali told you. Only the version of TWRP for ICS cannot be used if you are on JB Bootloader. TWRP version for JB is the way to go - the only way to go for you :good:.

In the end, I read that the unlock tool from asus normaly used for the ICS version could also work for JB is it true? And, if I unlock my tablet and install a recovery, then I will not be able to get an OTA update anymore, I will need to flash the next updates if I want them aint it? But then, are there any Roms stable enough worth unlocking my tablet? (If only I did root my device before... but in the same time it allowed me to know more about all this stuff).
I hope i don't bother you to much with this.

yes the unlock tool works on JB primes. stock ota roms from asus are not stable enough to be worth not unlocking your tablet. both the energy rom and the wookie rom are miles above anything asus will be sending out ota or otherwise. When there are updates the makers of custom roms rapidly incorporate them into the custom rom.

unlock tool doesn`t work + slow sd readings in quadrant
wtf...the unlock tool v6 gives me the message: unknown network error..bla blatry again later >:-/ i already wrote to asus, because iread they take tablets withthis error back(?) but thatsnot what i want...
i wanna root,unlock it and use a f***in CR!!!
i justbought the tfp second hand, andthe performance isnt even close to quadrant score(transformer prime isclose to4000)500 points missing.everything exept IO is as it shud be(3450) all tests score precisely the same , only IO is at 900 points i read from scores close to 6000 @1,7 ghz with custom roms...
is there a alternative 4 thea asus unlock tool? im searching for hours now...please help if u know what to do!
thx in advance

TF201, upgrade to .21 after rooting by downgrade: no update by OTA?

Hi,
I've finally been able to root my TF201 (unlocked) by the downgrading method but now I'm stuck on build v.15 and OTA says there is no update for me?
I tried to stop/clear CMclient and DM client, cold reboot..; but no way. I know that upgrading by adb will kill the rootkeeper.
Did I miss something? no OTA update for the last 24 hrs. On ASUS device tracker, my device is upgraded to .21 maybe the problem come from here.

If you unlocked your tablet, you wont get any OTA updates.
this is what I found out. Not an issue, it's still possible to upgrade by adb but then root is lost . I need root... so...

You've obviously researched the subject. Is there some reason why downloading the .21 update from Asus support pages and unzipping it 1 level to place the extracted zip file in the root of a micro SD card and rebooting won't update?
Hi,
It will update but the rooting will be lost. Even with Root keeper. (well, I did not try the SD card way)
If your unlocked you should not get official ota updates.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
This is what I understand. Will root be lost even if I update by the zip on /sdcard?
I may give a try to CM9...
If you are unlocked you will not loose root when you flash a zip (CM9) through recovery to a new ROM.
stock at 9.2.1.15
hi everyone, just wanna share this and ask something too...
so i thought that i could upgrade from .15 to .21 after unlocking my device, but found out that it was impossible. correct me please if i'm wrong...
i had no choice but to just leave it like that (.15) then install AOKP..
Are there any downside of being stock in .15? or is it still possible to do OTA update in a very safe possible way in the future?
Thanks....
If you downgraded to .15 make sure that you put the right blob on your prime so that you will be able to get the ota back to .21. If you use the wrong blob file than you will not get the ota.

skarfreak: you can upgrade manually to .21 but root will be lost.
I'm back to stock .15 rooted. I tried CM9 but so far not totally stable (crash of desktop?, drop wifi in standby...., no isp mode, not mouting sd card or usb stick etc..) . Hoping some progress both from CM9 and root for stock.

Or you could use AndroWook's stock rooted ROM to upgrade... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827 (post 2)

Can you please confirm the ASUS application are included such as quick-settings menu, app locker, IPS+ mode etc?
I'll have a look to it.
Meanwhile I've been able to root my stock .21 by this method for TF300:

havent you tried AOKP? i think i'll stick to AOKP atm, improves my tab a lot, can play GAMELOT games now.. quick boot.., but i think theres a little wifi issue.. anyway, there will be greater tweaks in the near future..
To emphasise - if you unlocked (as in bootloader unlocked) then you must never attempt to install the official ASUS firmware (either by OTA or other means). If you try, you will brick your prime.
Once unlocked, updates need to be by community ROMs only.
Please be specific about the distinction between rooted and unlocked, and be careful when giving advice that might brick someone's device unless you are sure you understand the advice you are giving.

To unlock the device use the tool from the Asus website. Just search "Asus tf201 unlock tool" in Google and it'll pop up.
The way I rooted was I just flashed a zip from recovery that flashed SU etc. Check the development thread for the TF201 and just READ. I nor anyone at XDA is responsible if you brick your device. Your actions are yours and you resume responsibility if you choose to follow any method found at XDA,
Do yourself a favor and try Androwook(based of Tw), AOKP (JB loader), or CM10(JB).... AOKP is amazing. It was just released yesterday (or day be4 that)
Remember, once you flash any of these you cannot go back to ICS. The bootloader is different and you can brick. (unless you have enabled nvflash)
If you are looking at another ROM to flash anyway it will most likely have root enabled. You just have to unlock the bootloader with the ASUS tool (which voids warranty) and do it.

Rooting an locked stock TF201 with jelly bean

Is there a way to root the tf201 running stock JB while keeping it's bootloader locked ?
I have tried running over all the threads here to find an answer and it seems to me that all methods to root the tablet requires flashing of a new boot loader..

There is a serious aversion to searching on this board even a cursory browsing of all the forums would yield the answer because it is asked every day.
In short, NO, not without unlocking.
Thank you for the reply..
The main issue I have with unlocking the bootloader is that i will not be able to get future updates from asus.. Maybe there is a method to get rooted by unlocking and maintaining the original bootloader?

Root and recovery are not really related..
If you are running the stock recovery you should be able to use ASUS apk to unlock it.. Then you can flash your custom recovery and change to whatever rom you like, just make sure you are flashing a JB ROM.
I am running the stock recovery and stock JB.
Every time I enter the input the info in the stock ASUS unlock apk it fails. I have read several places that it only works on ICS and that ASUS turned it off anyway. (although I haven't tried it in a week or so since everyone seems to think it doesn't work at all anymore; I will try it tonight)
Or is there a hacked ASUS apk that will unlock on JB and/or without talking to the ASUS server?

I unlocked mine on JB just a few days ago. The tool still works with JB (the notice on the site is outdated).
Some people have noticed that some primes (especially ones that have been repaired) don't want to unlock for some reason.
There is no way to unlock other than the official tool.

The reason the unlock fails is because the serial number is not showing up in ASUS DB to provide the unlock code. The unlocker communicates with ASUS to get an unlock key for each serial number and if your not in their DB well.... No unlock for you.
I did verify the sticker matches the digital serial number. I had hoped they would be different so I could update the digital one.
Anyone have a good contact at ASUS that would check/update their database?
The emails I have had with them so far have not been very helpful.
Edit:
I wonder if I change my digital serial number to one that someone else has already used to unlock will it send the unlock code for that serial number to me? And would it work? Or would I brick my Prime?

Did you RMA your TF201 before? I did because of WLAN-problems. They changed the WLAN-board so that the MAC-address of this board didn't fit to the rest of the device anymore (ASUS.TW-hq-support told me so). Because of this tablet-ID/MAC-address-mismatch the unlock wouldn't succeed. I always received the well known "network error bla-bla" message using the ASUS-unlock-tool. MAYBE unlocking could work as soon as you are able to change/spoof the MAC-address of the WLAN-board.
I had to RMA it back again to let them change the MAC-address so that I was able to unlock the tablet without any problems. But pay attention - I've heard that sometimes ASUS wants some cash for doing this job (~ 100 Euro + transportation). I was "lucky" because the WLAN-port again was broken and I pleased ASUS to also change the MAC so that it fits to the rest of the board.
Good luck & regards,
Roy

If the Nvdia logo at bootup is at the bottom right of the screen, you are on Jelly bean bootloader. Else, if it is below the Asus logo, it is ICS.
Hope this helps.

If you have the ICS bootloader still then do the nvflash process first. It can only be done while on ICS and will make you brick proof.
Once you upgrade you can never do it again.

I rooted my tablet on 4.2.1 using motochopper. Then I used titanium backup and I guess it automatically downgraded my tablet to 4.1.1 How can I unlock even though my tablet is already rooted?

turns out I was running 4.1.1 the whole time. I must have been hallucinating or something or maybe there was a glitch because my dmclient keeps crashing. How do I unroot, though?

How to change Mac Address
roygaard said:
Good luck & regards,
Roy

I had to wait 5 minutes before submitting changes because of this "new user"-forum rule and came back a few hours later because (guess what) I had other things to do. Now I'm too tired to find the typo(s) again. If you find the expected typo - you may keep it.

I had the same problemas you. I RMA'ed my tablet for something and when it came back the unlock tool would not work not matter what. It gave me that same error: "unknow error occurs which may be a network issue. please wait and try again later."
I couldn't figure out why it was not working except that some poeple who RMA'ed could not get it work. Your explanation makes sense. Now I need to find a solution. Do you have any idea it is possible to change the MAC address without sending it back in? My warranty has run out anyway. I did acheive root with the new motochopper method. But this will not allow me to get TWRP or other custom recovery (meaning I cannot change the rom - which is what I really want to do) until I have unlocked the bootloader.
I hate how slow this device is with stock rom. I know it is capable of so much more. Anyway, If you have any ideas how to get this Mac Address and ID to match with root but locked bootloader I would love to hear.

Hi.. did u ever figure how to upgrade the bootloader from unlocked/root ICS to JB boot loader?

A few questions before I root

Hello again all, I just have a few questions about rooting my sprint gn2 before i get started. I have found several instructional guides through xda (thanks to all that post them would be lost without ya!) however i am concerned because i am running the new updated version that some of these methods may cause me some issues. I suppose my question is most of these guides were made quite some time ago, and this update has only been around a few months now, is it safe to follow for example this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9zF6x1MURM&hd=1&list=SPwCVKEYxr_z7FBQYT32dbYw_kdSJmSDH2Do I need to revert back to a prior update somehow? I have searched for a few hours now and there does not seem to be much information on rooting the device after the latest update. Looking forward to running custom roms thanks for the help.
PS if there is anything you think i should know before starting feel free to chime in i will definitely send a thanks your way!
PSS I see that 4.3 locks down the bootloader completely.... this is bull****...... Anyone know whether the phone i get through insurance when i "break" my phone would come loaded with 4.3 as well?

You should check the sprint forums and maybe this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591523.
Edit: I'm not sure all about kingo so I can't give any suggestions.
Thank you, I had read about kingoroot and am sure that is the route i will be taking (as it is my only choice) however would i still be able to backup using twrp? will i still be able to flash custom roms? these are really the only two things i care for doing.. and running root only apps like titanium backup but that is a given. Thanked for your help btw.
Cheers

That I'm not sure. You would no longer have unlocked bootloader and I always thought the two ways to have custom recovery were if bootloader was unlocked or via a safestrap method. You would have root so I'd check and see if recoveries exist for sprint note ii after this root method of 4.3
I believe you would be unable to flash a new rom/kernel as they require a custom recovery to do so, and with out a unlocked boot loader you wouldn't be able to get a custom recovery.

+1... go to the Sprint forum for the best answer. Each carrier's version on the phone is slightly different.
