[Q] Root and custom ROM without PC connection (Gingerbread 2.3.3) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I just got a Samsung Galaxy S2 from a friend (Stock firmware GB 2.3.3)
For some reason I am not able to establish a connection between the phone and the PC.
I tried to install and reinstall Kies and/or the drivers multiple times (and everyone of the other suggestions i found with google) but with no success. The phone recognizes that it's been charged when the cable is plugged in and sometimes the phone even indicates that it's establishing a connection to kies (but this appears randomly, not always). On the PC there's no sign of any connection to the phone, neither Kies connects to it nor the phone is shown as any kind of device in the device-manager or in explorer ("adb devices" and Odin also don't recognize the phone).
Since my fathers S2 (2.3.6 Stock Firmware) connects fine with the same drivers and cable i finally gave up searching for any any other possible reason than a damaged connector on the phone.
So i tried to search for ways to root the phone, put CWM on it and a custom ROM without any PC connection.
I encountered some things like signed custom kernels that should grant you root access, an exploitation, ...
The exploitation didn't work out for my phone, and the kernels I've found are for Jellybean or ICS, so not suitable for my Gingerbread-Firmware,
I've found some older threads on various websites that promised such kernels for Gingerbread, but there were either dead links or nothing suitable for my phone.
So now I'd like to ask the community if anyone knows any signed kernel to gain root access for my phone, or any other way to accomplish my task of upgrading to a custom firmware, or if there's no possible way to do this and I should stop wasting m time on this...
(btw, for some reason the update of the firmware via WiFi doesn't work either, so I would be glad if anyone just knows a way to upgrade to a newer stock-firmware)
My phone:
model: GT-I9100
Android: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100NEKD5
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
Buildnr.: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
thank you all in advance

Can you download and install the latest version of Odin and check if it recognises that your phone is connected?
Let me know

You can try ExynosAbuse ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297) for rooting; not sure if it works for gingerbread though.
Once you're rooted you should be able to flash cwm with MobileOdinPro (costs 5 bucks; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro)

Try these:
Boot to recovery and factory reset (backup any pics etc if required)
Set debugging in usb access
Try other usb ports on the pc.
I wanted the same thing untill it took me 2 weeks to decide I wanted to flash in odin. Swapping to a different port gave me access.
Good luck.

This is what I tried too and for me it didn't work. I got the same problem as TO. I'm going to try some more stuff and if it would work i'll let you know and will follow this.
ps. I even have switched the board inside with the micro usb connector. Didn't work. I am on 4.0.4.

I already tried if Odin recognizes my phone -> no success...
I also tried ExynosAbuse before, it tells me when I start the app made by chainfire, that my device is unable to be rooted via this method.
And I've already tried to connect through every single port on every single computer that's available to me, still no success...
The only chance a can see right now might be to find a signed kernel that gives me root-access via the "install update from SD card" function, I've already found a few, but none of them was suitable for my device...
The problem is that this firmware apparently is that "old", that most of the results when searching for this topic are JB or ICS-related.

You really gotta get your device rooted and flashed (mobile odin pro might is a good choice)
Don't you have an External SD card? if not, I'm sure you know someone who does.
Once you get it, you can get your device rooted & flash whatever you want via recovery.
And remember, you can always say to your dad "hey old man, how about this: I give you my phone, and you give me yours".

Yes, I do have an external SD card, but as far as I know, to flash your phone via MobileOdin it needs root access, and I still haven't figured out how to grant my applications root access on this device without any PC connection... I haven't found any useable kernel/update yet that helps me with my problem and can be installed without the phone being rooted already... If you know one, I would be glad if you could tell me
I already tried to negotiate with my dad but he doesnt seem very cooperative. He didn't like the fact that my phone has an older firmware than his and that I haven't found a way to update it... (Somehow the firmware-update via WiFi doesn't work too, it tells me everytime that the phone failed to connect to the server)

lol, okay, stop and read for a min.
You can root your device with that SD card.
Read this guy's method.
After you root it, you're up for some flashing.
But take it one step at the time.
If we get you to flash a nice looking ROM, your dad's gonna say something like this "hey, that's a nice looking OS you got there, how about I give you mine + 100 bucks"
About the OTA (over the air) update, I recall reading something about it. I'ma see if I can find a thread about that.

Also, you might like to try removing kies from your system (every last trace of it) and reinstalling the latest version. Then try connecting the phone again.

Dude. That method (Rachmat3's) only works for ICS. He's on GB.

Quantity rather than quality lol.

Yes, this method doesn't work on GB, I've tried this before with a huge load of different CWM-bootloaders from a lot of different sources and it always throws an "signature verification failed" or "failed to verify whole-file signature" error or both...
Isn't there any similar way to do this on GB? I've been an iPhone user for a few years now and didn't check the android hacking/modding community very often and because of this I'm not aware of any rooting methods that may have been available back then...

All you need to do is use the exynos exploit to gain root. You can do this via a simple apk.
Once you have root install Mobile Odin and flash Siyah kernel (.tar) to get custom kernel, cwm recovery etc.
Then you're off! Just reboot into recovery and wipe/flash away :good:

Unfortunately the ExynosAbuse-method isn't an option for me neither...
EDIT:
found this in the changelog of ExynosAbuse (added in v1.20):
- Gingerbread-related fixes - note that not all Gingerbread firmwares of affected devices are vulnerable (for example, I know several SGS2 GB firmwares are not exploitable)
I think that unfortunately I have one of those firmwares...

What about changing the usb board.

If nothing else works this will be my last option in the end i guess, but I'd rather prefer a software-based solution because I assume it might be a bit cheaper

Looks like your only option to me.

try this
open the phone dialer
enter *#7284#
then make sure your phone is set to usb mode
you can try switching it to modem or the other option then reboot phone
then enter code again and pick usb option
you might need to reboot again
I had a problem in the past where USB would not connect and when I did the above it worked.

You, Sir, are my personal hero from now on I couldn't really try by now if this solved the problem with the USB-connection, but somehow it solved the problem with the firmware-update per WiFi, and now I was able to update to the newest ICS-firmware available to my device. And hopefully I will be able to root it now with one of the signed kernels available for ICS-firmware

[Q] Long Story Anyone to make it short???

I bought GT-I9000M, Froyo, 4 days ago, brand new unlocked from store. I had a problem getting GPS to work. Searching for a fix on the web, I got inundated with all kind of info,. Not only on GPS fixes, but on comparing, updating, rooting, flashing, unlocking, APP's and other issues with my Galaxy s. So, after reading quite a bit, I decided to update or flash my phone to the latest (assuming that will solve GPS problem and all other issues). As a newbie to Android software which I was about to temper with, I selected androidadvices.com to guide me. I had read very carefully and I followed instructions meticulously to flash 2.3.4 XXJVP. but it did not work. then the phone did not start and I got the little mobile and pc with triangle in between sign. I still could get to download mode. I tried to repeat the process many times, but got same results. it halted after it started to load bin file. I consulted the so called expert at androidadvices if the I9000M differs from I9000 and if could that be the reason for what happened. HE did replied promptly "YES" and advised to take it to service center. I searched a little more on the web with other language and I found a tip about omitting pit file (using Odin). Tip worked fine and flashed to XXJVP. Please do not congratulate me yet. Now the phone starts showing I9000. I did not only lose M, but it is network locked. Getting back to the so called expert to ask him if it's a good idea to upgrade or rooting (as he described in his instructions) to 2.3.4 XXJVQ to solve the problem. Also I meant to publish what happened on his site to save other newbies from believing what he writes. And his answer was "YES" again. Now I know the trick how to use Odin by omitting pit file, I did flashed to XXJVQ. Unfortunately, the galaxy s still locked. By that time, with no search, I already know that XDA forum from their tens of Youtube videos and links on every galaxy s site for their unlocking techniques. I'm sorry I'm trying to make this story short, but I can't for I won't feel well if someone trying to help asks me "did you do that?". However I tried everything I could, using Generate Unlock and SIM less methods, on XDA to unlock, yet no luck. I logged on a site I do not recall the address and up loaded the nv_data.bin.orig and entered 8 digits twice for unlock and unfreeze. I got back the message "the file is smaller than it should". the file was 4MB. I paid for unlock code from unlock-freedom.com 2 days ago, which promised to send code within 12-24Hrs. Yes the store I bought it from is finally open today. I went there and he plugged it to laptop hooked to USB unlocking device. He tried many time and ending with the message unlocking successful on the unlocking app. Yes you got it, the Galaxy s I9000 previously I9000M still locked. On the bright side.I have Gingerbread 2.3.4 XXJPQ installed and if I dismiss unlocking screen I can log in my email. Any help from a real Expert!!!!! will the unlock code, if I receive it, solve the problem. will I ever have my new phone working again????

Ok that was pretty long and slightly confusing. But I think you lost your unlock yes? Have you tried Helroz's Galaxy S Unlock app from the market?
Thank you for replying, I'll be more than delighted to clear your confusion. The answer I coulld not try Helroz's for it's like some other methods require to gain access to efs folder. I don't have folder named efs. and the only file I found browsing internal sdcard whether through PC or Myfiles icon on mobile was nv_data.bin.org with another file called devicefriendlyname.txt with rest of regular folders like sovx and android. all under: /mnt/sdcard as it shows in the phone.

No Way I think you chould replace your TW launcher with your TV guide and look for the cable guy movie
I have a problem here installed busybox and ran it to get the following;
Root not found!
the su binary was not found on your phone. this application will not work since your phone is not rooted
Then I press OK to get:
Status: looking for Busybox....
Your phone is not rooted
you used root explorer ?? so you must be rooted
i tried restoring app with titanium and it said i wasnt rooted so i rebooted and then it worked
try that and if not then try the super one click root method
Ready to donate and hit many thanks
Yes it's me again. still trying.
can anyone write happy ending to this endless story. but please consider I'm A NOOB not anything less than that. meaning I'm not familiar with most of terms and expressions you are using here.
However, if you are following this annoying story from beginning, I'm facing a dead end again, but i know there is great hope considering the following:
I have decided to start clean so I followed instruction in this thread (NOOB GUIDE: HOW TO ROOT/ODIN/FLASH/RECOVER ** 04/28/11 W/ Videos **).
I did every thing as it should be I believe, but I'm stock half way. Phone now flashed to stock T959UJFD (I'm glad now I can say that since I know what stock means) but shuts down as soon as I plug USB cable???????
I have update.zip file on internal SD not the 2GB external.
Also have the Rom of my choice zip file (Trigger 3.2) on internal SD.
Oh I also have SuperOneClick. And Odin 1.7
tried too many things like flashing without reparation or without reboot. tried also to flash some 2.3 Rom versions. and they do work well as I saw. Only one main problem I can't root the phone (meaning I can't see efs folder to unlock phone) which what I have to do since I locked it while trying to fix GPS, in case you are not following from the start.
I also have a very light nice functional stable Arabic Persian Rom. as a matter of fact, I do not know how, but with this version of Rom the phone was able to receive calls and sms. half locked
Thank you Kyle for trying and I believe I have to hit the thanks button for you
I'd really appreciate any help to end this rather entertaining story.
dont know why it goes off when usb gets plugged in :s
you cant root rooting means you can flash custom roms which you've done ?? so you must be rooted ??
and you dont need odin or super one click on your sd (if thats what you meant)
but trying to fix gps locked it as in only open to 1 network/carrier ?? (whatever it's called where you are)

Need Help Please Bricked Note i717 Yesterday

I have a Galaxy Note i717 from AT&T that I rooted. Worked great.
Yesterday I upgraded to ICS via Kies. Worked great.
Then I proceeded to root it again using odin.
Unfortunately even after all the things done it now will not boot up at all.
All I get is the S a m s u n g logo. I can put it into boot mode and the computer see's it but nothing more.
If anyone can point me to any rom/bootloader/ etc. I would be most grateful.
Or just let me know what to do and where to get roms. I did search and there are many for the i700.
I guess I need a bootloader and rom right?
Sorry folks. Point me somewhere else will have to get another phone.
T h a n k s ...
Others would tell you to look in the dev section for the stock rom (its usually called something like "in case of brick) I've had issues issues getting it to work but Im certain it was user error as to why it didn't work for me. But another option that I think could work would be to get your phone into download mode and run the ics upgrade thru kies again. You'll lose everything in your phone but I think it'll get your phone up and running again. But before you do any other that...did you make a nandroid back of? Or have you downloaded any roms to your phone because if you did you can just enter cwm and reflash any rom you may have or just flash your backup, backups are so important when doing these sort of things, saves a lot of head aches.
Edit: after reading your post again it says your phone messed up after rooting, try and re run the root file thru Odin, I kinda sorta remember reading something similar to this were people had issue trying to root. I'll try and find the thread.

this happened due to rooting with the Gingerbread method...so using Nash reply run/reinstall your Official ICS...and to root....
see My Links in red in my signature...go the GNote Super page....you should see what is being used to root the Official ICS...I used it and lots others, there prob more methods out there, but I found this is the easiest and more proven method....
Cant miss the info on GNote page regarding Rooting.
so to recap...since your believe you have bricked your phone...
use the method Nash replied to you with...put into download mode....run the official ics, you will need the model, serial number of your phone...
let us know how it works out for you...

And once you're rooted and all fixed up, enter cwm and create a backup. These are great because no matter what you do to your phone as long as you can enter cwm you'll always be able to fix your phone via backup.

I wanted to mention, I'm not sure how you updated thru kies originally (legit update or emergency update) the method you'll be using this time (if you choose to fix thru kies) is the more or less emergency method. I wanted to mention this because when your in download mode and connect your phone to your PC and run kies, kies will try to connect to your device but will time out over time...it took me 2 days of Q and A before I realized kies won't connect with phone in download mode, but that's OK. Once phone is connected click tools/firmware upgrade and initialization, and as bigjoe said youll than need to input model and serial numbers (all caps) than click OK. You'll have a few prompts afterwards but yo basically on your way to a running phone.

Brick = nothing at all happening on phone.
Samsung logo = bad flash (corrupt file used)
Brick can sometimes be revived with a JTAG device.
Samsung logo means re download file, re read instructions and relevent thread, and redo your work.
Don't be too anxious -you will fix it.
I suggest using Kies upgrade > emerency firmware method. Download mode is the key.

Thanks all for the replies.
I was able to go to DEV Section and get the full AT&T ICS Rom. Used ODIN to get it back to factory ICS.
Then (with great care ) re-rooted it using ICS root stuff. I have it all in case anyone else needs this route. Else follow instructions above.
Thanks all. I think for now ICS is where this will stay. In fact Gingerbread was good enough except for not being able to use Chrome.

[Q] LG Optimus Exceed (aka LG Lucid) VS840PP won't take a root

After scrounging, searching, hunting, and generally scrubbing every tree/rock/bush for answers, I have decided that it is time to post. As I am new to these forums, I sincerely appreciate any assistance in this matter. I have tried the only two methods that I can find to root my phone. the one by Bin4ry which is found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460. and another one from a different site that was for JB. I have made sure that both debugging is on as well as allowing installations of non-market applications. I have tried every single usb mode, that just on the off chance, mine was that one phone that wanted to seperate itself from society. Since my phone is running ICS 4.0.4 I should be using Bin4ry's version, but I get stopped by this

It says that It's done and that all is done, but I think that because the mounting permission was denied that it wasn't able to root the device. If I could get some assistance on this from someone with more experience, I'd appreciate it. Does anyone know how to fix/root this device? I don't know if this will make a difference or not but it says the software is VS840PP2

I wish someone would resolve this I see people all over the place bragging they have rooted their exceeds "showing proof" and no-one seems to give a crap that some people can't afford the most easily rooted phones and are forced to get the most workable less expensive phones. I have student loans and would have to pay a $400.00 deposit to be able to pay 150 dollars for a semi decent phone and my carrier won't allow me to use the phone I've had for a couple years that I rooted myself. I just want a viable answer to how do you root the exceed I know what I'm doing but I work for a living (making very little at that) and have a child to support so I can't devote a week to figuring it out and am frustrated that nobody seems to give a crap about anything but the new razr or the iphone (trendys).

Yep, I just rooted my VS840PP, seems you need to use the Lg Spectrum root, but since I'm new I can't post links, but you will need the driver file "LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.11.0.exe" and "LG_Spectrum_ICS.zip" (put these into a search engine)
Install Instructions
Download and unzip
Connect your phone to your PC
Make sure to have the LG USB drivers installed
Make sure to have debugging enabled
Make sure to have USB connectivity set to internet connection
Run the script for your OS (.bat for Windows, .sh for Linux)
Enjoy
I really did think it would make my phone not boot, but surprisingly it worked! EDIT 8-16-13 treat this phone like any other LG Lucid, which means you can go to CM 10 4.1 Jellybean on this phone.

Yeah one which is Android 4.1.2, the file is called "cm-10-20130424-UNOFFICIAL-vs840.zip", but you have to rollback to GB 2.3.6(due to locked ics bootloader), install root, CWM and finally install the CM 10 based LG Lucid beta rom. I see you edited your post and yes it is the standard LG Lucid Gingerbread downgrade method. The forum thread title is "[ROM][BETA] CyanogenMod 10 for the LG Lucid" and its on "androidforums.com" all info you need should be in that forum thread. I can tell you that Jellybean works very well on this phone, and I never want to go back to 4.0.4. :good: But of course there are some bugs, as it seems signal strength is lower, but I may have the wrong baseband for this phone.

You may have to install the baseband for the Exceed. I think in the CyanogenMod beta thread on AndroidForums there is a link but I'm not sure. Use ROM Manager to install CWM Recovery and then Flash CM10.

As long as you're rooted, search on the internet for "cwm installer for lucid" and follow the install instructions on gingerbread, then you want to flash the CWM touch recovery by searching for LGVS840_CWMT.zip and clicking on "CWM Touch Flashable Recovery for LG Lucid 4G - LG Cell Phones ..." Make sure you have the CWMT zip and LG Lucid CM 10.1 zip on your micro sd card. You then use rom manager to boot into recovery and flash the CWMT zip, then do a factory reset and clear caches and finally flash the LG Lucid CM 10.1 available on androidforums.

May I ask which firmware are you suppose to use to do a roll back? Can you just use the Lucid's firmware or does it have to be the Exceed firmware to work for the roll back?

It's the stock gingerbread for the LG Lucid and you look for the method to install with LG's tool and you will need the file "VS840ZV6_06.S6_06.P58014.R5.cab" and look for how to roll back to gingerbread on the lg lucid to find out how to roll it back.

Hmm, after restoring successfully, for some reason I cant get the Wi-Fi to work. I tried both versions the V5 and V6 in the dropbox posted on android forum. Can root and everything but unable to access any internet without wifi. Kinda stuck without CWM. Any clues?
Edited: Whoops, Haha, a Factory Reset fixed it.
Edited: Blah after being able to install Rom Manager and installing CWM "Successful" I still get into CWM recovery.
Edited: CWM solved but now I get the "Cant Mount Sd" in CWM. Trided both "fat and "extFAT" and no go. Any Help?
Edited: Finally! Bad SD card! CM 10 up and running! Woot!

Glad to see you got CM 10 on this phone, since it runs pretty good, the only issue I had is the way it handles low signal areas, which is why I upgraded to the LG Spectrum plus I wanted Verizon 4G LTE.

I think I may have had the same issue and it turned out the root files didn't extract correctly the first time, so I deleted the root files and extracted them again and it worked. Of course I can't exactly remember it now, but its worth a try. EDIT: Wait no, it looks like root installed fine, are you on stock ICS or Gingerbread? As Gingerbread has special root tools that are different from ics, also make sure you have superSU installed and try the root checker from the playstore.
Will I be stuck in activation mode?

New to the community and was hoping this was a good place for a related question. I have an exceed and I rooted without problem yesterday. I believe my SD Maid app deleted some important files or something because I stopped receiving incoming calls and texts. Anyway, I soft bricked my phone a few times and got the "Long time no see" message. I thought I unrooted my phone so I tried doing a hard reset thinking I would possibly fix the problem. That made matters worse. My soft brick became the only thing I could see no matter how many times I pulled the battery out and rebooted I was stuck at that screen. After hours of trying to get my pc to recognize my phone/get my phone in download mode, I finally fixed it and rooted again. Problem is that when I went through the unbrick process and flashed the kdz file to my phone, it was then stuck in activate mode. It wasnt a big deal because I just played dumb with verizon and they fixed it in their system being that when trying to activate it didnt give me the option to activate on my same plan/number. A bit annoying but better than nothing. My question is when I roll back to gingerbread or flash CM10 will I be stuck in activation mode again? Sorry for the long post, just figured I would give the what and why before my question!

You mean the activation screen, that you can quite easily bypass, also once it is is active it doesn't need to be activated again. Here is how to bypass activation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WGKCdlnt1s

Unofficially installing CM - Need help?

Hi!
I am installing CM from my phone's sd card, because my laptop never show the connectivity of my phone. Maybe a cable issue, but I don't know why. Someone told me that you can not connect GT-I8552 via USB cable.
OK! I have rooted my phone, and busybox is installed. I have downloaded CM v11 for Samsung Galaxy Premier, as this was the phone having configuration closer to my phone.
So, I installed ROM Installer, and it asked me to locate the zip file on sdcard. I did that, and finally clicked the install button, and that displayed a message for reboot in recovery mode. I clicked OK! My phone rebooted, and a screen came with the logo of android. Now, there were some option like wipe all data, reboot. Installed from SD card. I choose SD card and but it says no file here.
Although it displayed me a message on the main recovery screen that Multi CSC successful.
What could be the problem here, any idea?
I'm assuming that you rooted your phone using the CWM method.
The first problem is that you should install it directly through CWM (recovery), these programs like the one you used don't work very well with your device. I don't trust them, but this is my opinion.
The second problem is that you are trying to install CM of another phone. You shouldn't do this. Seriously. Unless you are willing to get a nice paperweight to use at office...

Hi!
Thanks for the response. Well, yeah! I guess there is only one fine-working ROM for GT-I8552, and that is by Bionic Monkey. So I guess I will install that. But I have a USB cable connectivity issue. My laptop never show the connectivity of cell phone. Do you have any idea about that?
Does you system has "samsung usb drivers" if not please install it and then try to connect it.
Here is the link: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOB...es-15270.shtml
or you can install kies
Here is the link : http://www.samsung.com/in/support/us...tware/KIES/JSP
if this not the issue, then may be it's due to corrupted rom or drivers, try same as above uninstall drivers and kies and re-install them, if not worked may be issue with rom.

Need help with root for Galaxy SM-J320VPP / android 6.0.1

i know this is a newer phone but i'm still pretty surprised i haven't been able to find anyone that's rooted it yet. i've been all over the internet it seems. this is the :
Samsung Galaxy J3(6)
SM-J320VPP
Android 6.0.1 Marshamllow
Verizon pre-paid plan/network
i see lots of videos and guides for other j320f or j320p (close but no cigar) and nothing works. what i've tried so far:
- Dev mode enabled, USB debugging and OEM unlocked.
- any/all 1 click root apps. none worked, and i'd like to avoid these anyway unless you know it works 100% for my version. at this point i'll try anything.
- recovery / flash superSU. only i haven't even gotten past flashing a recovery. i've tried several different versions of Odin with several different versions of recovery .tar's and for each combination i've tried Odin simply fails. big red FAIL button in upper left corner. sadness. this seems like what i need help with. i have SuperSU downloaded so if i can just get a custom recovery working for my phone i'm hoping it's a simple process from there of booting into the custom recovery and then installing the SuperSU. presto.
is there no hope? is there no tested, confirmed working recovery that i can flash to my phone using Odin? i've tried Odins 3.07, 3.09, and 3.11.1. various custom recovery .tars but the only one i know for sure is the J2 version official from TWRP's website (yes i know it says J2 but someone on another thread said it's similar enough to someone ELSE's model "j320f" or something so i gave it a shot) the other recovery .tars i tried are suspect since they had generic names "recovery.tar" and were downloaded from links provided in many different "guides" that i've googled.
internet, you have failed me. thus do i issue this challenge to all those mighty phone hackers of the land. come forth and slay the evil giant that is my phone's ludicrous security (seriosuly how is this even a thing still in 2016. my phone can do so much more, so much better but for these shenanigans).
thanks so much in advance!
EDIT: not sure about the bootloader. i may be a complete idiot. yes. ok. i'm onto something. gonna post this anyway for any other poor soul that has this version phone, but i think Odin's probably failing because the bootloader is still locked. and Samsung doesn't make this easy like motorola or HTC. T_T. once more into the fray! i'll see if i can't track down a method for unlocking the bootloader on my phone. should i return victorious i'll go ahead and share my steps with the rest of the class.
EDIT2: there is no waking from this nightmare. i dig and dig and dig and can find no root. *sigh*
-- i've got android studio installed. and the java SDK platform-tools which contains the adb.exe, fastboot.exe, etc.
-- something i should explain here: in all these guides whenever there's a step that requires the phone to be connected to the PC, it simply says to, you know...connect your phone. but MY phone by default only uses the cable for battery charging. i have to (on my phone) swipe down from the top, select the "connected for charging" message bringing up "Use USB For" options, then select "Transferring media files" option. THEN my phone shows up both in my windows explorer and displays as a device when i run "adb devices".
--when i run "adb reboot bootloader" this does the same thing as holding down pwr/home/vol down - phone boots up into a blue (teal?) background with a large down arrow in center, below that it says "downloading...do not turn off target". in the upper left are several lines of system font style text:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-J320VPP
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
FRP LOCK: OFF*
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE (CSB)
RP SWREV: S1, T1, H1, R1, A1, P1*
SECURE DOWNLOAD: ENABLE
*the R's above may be A's or vice versa...hard to read font. sorry
--but as soon as i've rebooted into this mode, my phone disappears from adb devices' list of devices attached. regardless when i run the "fastboot oem unlock" command from the adb shell on my PC at this point i get the infamous "waiting for any device" message and then, of course, nothing....forever. i've also installed PDAnet but i think it's hitting the same road block where my phone is only using the cable for battery charging and i can't toggle that option from ODIN MODE. there's also a "USB Configuration" choice under development options on the phone that has the same options as "Use USB for" but this doesn't stick when booting into ODIN MODE. sadness. i need to retire my brain thoughts at this point. will post TL;DR. you're a saint of geeks if you've made it through my WoT to here.
EDIT3: just an observation - the only thing (so far) that will detect my phone in ODIN MODE is ODIN itself. is there a way to use ODIN to unlock the bootloader?
TL;DR: i think odin is failing when attempting to flash because of locked bootloader. need help with unlocking bootloader first? phone defaults to use USB cable for charging only so i CAN change that to MTP while phone is on normal and then run "adb reboot bootloader" but then phone vanishes from adb devices list once it reboots (and cable is then only charging). thus, cannot run "adb fastboot oem unlock" cuz it hangs displaying "waiting for any device" -- can i unlock the bootloader on this phone? or did i buy a phone that's IMPOSSIBLE TO ROOT!?!?
I have the same problem! I need to root it to install the Patch to change from CDMA to GSM! Because I tried without root and it tells me "E: Signature verification failed"
Thanks
Still nothing?
This is starting to look hopeless
we need the stock recovery.img to be able to mod it and flash it through odin. the recovery for the verizon version does not match so odin wont allow it. i asked on sammobile and they said verizon only releases ota on the device. so idk what to do. perhaps someone with knowledge on this will help.
so far what ive figured out our situation is:
we need root to get root.
more specifically we need root to pull the recovery and then mod that recovery with twrp and use twrp to gain root. The root methods that worked for the other variant SM-J320P dont appear to work for ours, probably due to having android 6.0.1
till we get root we are stuck. the rest is easyish

The J320VPP has a "1.2 GHz, Quad-Core". There is no place that sais it's a "Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 Msm:8916" processor. You think this suggestion could work?

im gonna try and do a reflash with kies and grab that file myself, ill work a bit on it because i love this phone but no basic root is driving me insane. if you can beat me to posting tell me how you got the file, otherwise ill post here once i find out. I'm not a top of the line developer but i can work my way around and try my best since nobody else is offering to help.
wish me luck.
sorry for the double post but got the files via the verizon software assistant no problem. it ended up in C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Verizon_AR\SM-J320VPP_J320VPPVRU1APC3_FACTORY for me, and even decrypted and unzipped itself for me, now we just need to mod a custom thingy into those files and we can work towards rooting. so as i sit here and watch my phone finish flashing back to factory i will look into how we can mod the recovery. if someone is capable of doing it faster i can upload the files very quickly as its only 1.4 gb
well turns out verizon locks the flashing with signature verfication. so unless verizon changes or root is found for marshmellow there will be zero possible root for this phone.

sorry for the double post but got the files via the verizon software assistant no problem. it ended up in C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Verizon_AR\SM-J320VPP_J320VPPVRU1APC3_FACTORY for me, and even decrypted and unzipped itself for me, now we just need to mod a custom thingy into those files and we can work towards rooting. so as i sit here and watch my phone finish flashing back to factory i will look into how we can mod the recovery. if someone is capable of doing it faster i can upload the files very quickly as its only 1.4 gb

verizon blocks flashing of modified recoveries. so unless someone finds a root exploit for marshmallow we will have no luck.
Has the kingroot method worked for root on your device ??

we need the stock recovery.img to be able to mod it and flash it through odin. the recovery for the verizon version does not match so odin wont allow it. i asked on sammobile and they said verizon only releases ota on the device. so idk what to do. perhaps someone with knowledge on this will help.
so far what ive figured out our situation is:
we need root to get root.
more specifically we need root to pull the recovery and then mod that recovery with twrp and use twrp to gain root. The root methods that worked for the other variant SM-J320P dont appear to work for ours, probably due to having android 6.0.1
till we get root we are stuck. the rest is easyish

Hi to all, im new here and i am having the exact same problem! You say that there has to be a root specifically for the 6.0.. So i found that in the Chainfire page they have this https://download.chainfire.eu/986/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-j3lteusc-j3lteusc-smj320r4.zip already (i dont know if i can post links, so if i cant, sorry), it is marshmallow but the model is J320R4, so i was wondering if this could be the solution. i'll be waiting here for a response, i seriously love this phone :c

No, this is not the solution. When using a utlity like CF Auto Root, it must be specific to your model / carrier. Trying to install that will do 1 of 2 things.
1) Just fail in Odin
or
2) Soft brick your device
Since VZW doesn't bother to put out the full firmware files to reflash the device, it's not worth attempting without having the backup plan of the original firmware to flash via Odin.
an twrp is already available for j320p u can try to root your device using it

Understood, thank very much you for clearing that out. Since all this is pretty much a kick in the butt, do you think there will be some kind of solution to this or should we just lose hope? :/

anyone fix ?
i have few units J320VPP same problem .. searching for service .
That's a Verizon device with a locked bootloader, you cannot try twrp or modified files meant for 320f or other models on this one.

So has anyone found any luck with this device? It's driving me crazy not having root
