Media process and SD card issue, need help - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Hoping someone can help with this issue.
My phone is an international galaxy s3. Bought september 2012 with a class 10 sandisk 32GB SDCard. Around november, suddenly, phone keeps displaying "preparing sd card", "damaged sd card", etc. when phone wakes up from sleep, this causes media process to continually run in the background, killing battery. Force stopping the Media process doesn't help as after sometime, Media process will run again.
I solved the issue by buying another SDcard, same brand, class 10 32GB as well.
And now, after 2 months, same issue reappeared with my new SD card! Displayed the same preparing sd card issue, and now my phone seldom deep sleeps because of the android.process.media process. It keeps sending wake locks.
Anybody knows what the issue is and how to solve?
Thank you very much

Same problem here, I'm on my third SD now and after a week or so the same problem happens?

Carry out a proper test of the SD card .

I managed to temporarily solve the problem by buying another sd card (my 3rd SD as well), but this time I bought a class 4 16GB one.
One thing I noticed, when using ES file explorer, and checking the last modified of the SD cards (the old ones), it shows as 1970-01-01. When I reformat it, it goes back to the correct last modified date, but over time it goes back to 1970. This new SD card still shows the correct last modified date so far.
@JJEgan: I did try that SD card test tool from before (1st SD card) and didn't show any problems. I doubt it is a fake one though, I bought it in Korea with the hologram packaging and all, the 2nd one I bought in the Philippines but also looks legit (using SD test tool app also seems fine for both).
@sam77744: I already tried a factory reset. and formatted SD card in the PC, in the galaxy s3 itself, same problem.
Is it possible for the phone to mess up with the SD card over time? In such a way that even if you format the SD card lots of times, it will really not work well with the phone anymore?
By the way, my phone ran 4.04 then upgraded to 4.1.1 over the lifespan of the 1st sd card, then 4.1.1 and then upgraded to 4.1.2 over the lifespan of the 2nd sd card. Stock ROM, never rooted, updated 4.1.1 via Kies and 4.1.2 via OTA.
Will be grateful to any ideas on what might be wrong and how to permanently fix, I can't keep buying new SD cards every month

Download the SD Formatting tool, available for free from the manufacturers association's website. I've had several cards over the years that corrupted after formatting in the phone, but were okay after using the tool.
I'm not convinced that class 10 cards are the best option for phones, yes for cameras where only a small number of large files of written, but in phones where a large number of small files are written a class 6 might be better for real life use.

Problem with MEMORY CARD - SGS3

I bought SGS3 and 16gb Transcend memory card.
I transferred my data from my nexus s to memory card through windows with memory reader, then I putb memory card in SGS3, but phone was making lots of hanging and removing SD memory unexpected. and it couldn't read it again, so I have formatted it and it happen continuously.
so I gave back the memory card and I bought 32gb Sandisk class 10, but the problem still is there.
after searching in forum I found there is no mass storage usb option with SGS3, but there is PTP and MTP.
when I am transferring data through MTP also , the process stops in between and after that phone cant read data properly.
what is wrong and what should i do?
Upgrade the firmware through Kies if you're on stock or through Odin/CWM otherwise.
Then check if it still applies.

I already upgraded firmware to latest one and the new thing is that just now I Tried an 8gb memory card I copied my data on it and its working perfectly.
what is the problem?
Maybe the contacts on the SD card are dirty, try cleaning them with alcohol (The one in your medecine cabinet, don't waste your good Wodka on it)
Also, make sure it's not exFAT formatted.
No body else has same problem?

[Q] External SD card may be damaged (any DEFINITIVE answers?)

First of all, I am very aware this has been asked many times and will be asked many times after this. I have read MANY threads both here and elsewhere and have never seen a definitive answer (which may not exist)...
My phone has started telling me about once per day that my exernal sd card may be damaged and unmounting it. If I reboot, it works fine until the next time it decides to tell me that again. I have checked it several times with Check Disk on Windows and it never finds any problems. I am currently using a SanDisk 64GB class 10 card purchased off Amazon. Yesterday, I copied everything off the card, completely formatted it (not the quick format and in the required Fat32 format) using the GUI version of Fat32format and copied everything back to the card. Both before and after formatting, Check Disk found no issues. Today, I received a notification that my SD card had unexpectedly been removed (it had not). A few seconds later I received notification that my SD card may be damaged and may need to be formatted. How in the hell Android can tell me that a SD card is corrupt after it already told me that it was no longer in my phone is a mystery to me...
This is the second time I started experiencing this issue. The first time was with a 32GB class 4 SanDisk card that I think WAS becoming corrupt because Check Disk would find issues with that card, so I ended up replacing it with the card I am using now (less than 2 months ago). So... is my card failing? Or is there any reason that Android would report an SD card damaged when it is not?
I would really prefer if the card was failing, because then I would at least know how to fix the issue (get a new card). However, I am not willing to get a new sd card every couple months just because Android has sd card issues. The only recent (major) changes I have made to my phone before this issue started up again was installing the V6 SuperCharger script and changing from Busybox v1.20.0 to Busybox v1.20.2. I am likely going to remove those and see if this clears up, but is there a reason that Android would be falsely reporting a sd card as damaged or is it a sure sign of a failing card?

[Q] missing music files

Hey guys and gals, i just got my new i9300 unlocked phone running android 4.0.4. Loving it so far, upgrading from the i9100. The first problem i had however was the USB cable it came with, it seemed it was a bit faulty cause it kept disconnecting the phone, tried other cables and they all work fine so i tossed the original cable out and all is well in that regard, the only issue i have right now with the i9300 is transferring music files (over 5 gigs) from my windows 7 64bit laptop to the 16gig micro sd card on the phone. i have tried every method to copy my music over including removing the micro sd card and using the card reader on my laptop to copy the files and also rooting my phone just so i can install the easy ums app, but each and every time the card is mounted in the phone again, half of the songs end up in the LOST.DIR folder with some numbers as the file name and an unrecognized file type. I am in the process right now of trying to copy the music to the internal memory of the phone to see if this is the same issue thinking maybe the sd card is currupt somehow everytime it is mounted back to the phone. Does anyone else have any idea on this issue?
UPDATE: Just finished copying all the music to the Music folder on the internal memory on the i9300, all files are there, and they play fine, I am thinking the sd card is the problem, so i am going to try and buy a new sd card tomorrow to see if i have the same issue.

A standard problem with multiple posts .
jje
oh trust me, i have googled and searched this and other forums EXTENSIVELY before posting here, i havent seen anything exactly to what i am having, and the issues that are slightly similar to what i am having were solved when they formatted their sd cards to FAT32, which i have already done.
A standard problem with multiple posts from the first month of SGS3 on XDA .
Trust me i have actually read them even answered one today/yesterday .
That was to put the music on the internal card until you can find a solution .

k, well thought i'd post an update for anyone having the same issue, i got a new sd card, a class 4 kingston with 16gb (the one that came with the phone seemed to be a generic one) and copied the files over, the drag and drop way, and all seems to be well for now.
Same issue with music files disappearing
I have had the same problem. I cannot find a pattern or cause. I am on my second class 4 32 GB SD card formatted as Fat32. I have yet to find a reasonable explanation or solution to apply. The card can be read in the phone and from a computer. But some how some music files randomly end up in the Lost directory
The ext SD was a key reason for me switching to this phone. I may be back to my iPod for music listening
Thank you for any help

galaxy s4 memory card problems

Hi guys I'm having problems with my s4. If I transfer data from phone memory to the memory card it sometimes becomes corrupted or lasts a moment on the card the minute I reset the phone rrandom files are deleted or have there file names changed to different symbols a few weeks ago my 32gb SanDisk card just died completely unusable in any device or card reader if I use the card as a source for my camera it stores the photos but once again only till the card is unmounted or the phone reset. If I transfer from my laptop it is fine and remains on the card I have done a full system reset. Still no luck. I'm now running kit kat and have a 64 go Samsung memory card any help is really appreciated
I think it's a sdcard problem. Could you try another (if possible brand new) sdcard?

[Q] μ files on my sd card. is GS3 frying sd card?

First of all, im using a 4.1.2 stock and my device is rooted
So i had an Sandisk 64 GB class 10 for some time which one day became a "read - only" card...
So afterwards i bought a Samsung 32 GB class 10 which I found out also had problems because i could put about 10GB of files and everything more that 10 GB turned into wierd folders that their name starts with "μ" and there where no actual content inside and i couldn't delete them.
So now i'm at my third try, again with a Samsung 32 GB class 10 which also has the same problem, only now i can write on it about 20 GB of data before files start to get curropted.
Just want to say i bought all 3 SD card from Ebay, and though i guess they might be fake (tons of bad luck), after searching the web I found out there are many GS3 users with the same problem...
So i just want to put an end for this question..
Is GS3 frying SD cards? is there something i can do to stop it from destroying SD cards? can i fix somehow the SD cards?
thanks alot!
Hi! when you are asking a question you should include details such as operating system(4.1.2 , 4.3, 4.4, stock, rooted and so on) and file system. I noticed while searching google that the majority of "s3 fried sd cards" so to speak are sandisk and in your case it seams that there is no such "limitation". Maybe if you give more details someone might be able to help.

you can see the first lines contains the detailes you described.
can't think of any other relevant details.
What type of file system do you have on sd card? is it fat32 or Ext4?

not sure. I formated it with my GS3 and the computer won't recognize it without reformating it.
Worst case scenario is your phone somehow corrupted the sd card and that is that. I had a similar problem with my usb flash drive which i used on-the-go and unmounted it before removing it but when it happened i didn't make a backup(as always) and got stuck with a nice keychain. If you have the possibility to format it under windows with a card reader and choose fat32 at least you have a working sd card, otherwise use your warranty for the sd card(if you have one) and always BACKUP.

but do you think that my device is malfunctuning in a way that will keep frying my SD cards..?
well since this is the second sd card i personally send it on warranty(as hard as it may be without the phone) because it seems that something is not right with the contacts of the card reader circuit board. I read somewhere that on some phones the card reader slot had some contacts partially detached and so the sd card kept getting corrupted. Search a bit on google about this issue and take into consideration using your phone's warranty. Best of luck!
That is a bit strange. Unless you're used to remove the sd card with the phone accesing to it (no safe removing) or removing the battery while the phone is running, that's absolutely not normal.
I have my 32GB sd since 2010 and I never had any problem. I formatted it this year because it had tons of useless data and I liked to have it clean.
Of course it's not from Ebay! That is bulls**t and use to fail suddenly.
