greetings, i am a noob *sorry newb*! so go ahead and scream at me if you wish (that video had me rotfl), i bet you can't say anything to me that i haven't heard allready from people in Everquest, World of Warcraft, and League of Legends.
A friend introduced me to Xda when I was consitering buying a nook and he explained the concept of rooting.
Anyway, my question revolves around the half the ram on the new nook tablet. Assuming that there is no problems with rooting it, how much will half the ram effect the system?
I thought seeing the $50 price slash was a godsend, 8gig of storage i can live without, besides, its upgradeable if i really need it, but half the ram? whats the point of sticking on a faster processer if your gonna gut the ram?
can anyone give me an opinon as to if this is worth the price slash? or is $50 worth the extra ram?
its not half the RAM... its half the Storage. Which unless you are going to do some advanced partitioning you probably won't get much use out of anyway.
You pretty much have to get an external micro-SD card for these anyway as B&N only makes 1GB of the internal storage easily available.
Short answer... yeah its pretty much worth it. You can find 32gb cards online For $35 so you won't be missing much.

I cannot say whether or not it is worth it, because I have no experience with any other Android tablets besides the Nook, but I can confirm according to its website that is does have half the ram as well as half the storage. 8 GB storage and 512k ram.

You may have noticed in the video that this forum is stricter than others. It's mainly to keep things from getting repeated and to save people time, though, and it works nicely that way. Developing is hard work. BTW, no one's head is gonna explode about this, but questions like this are probably best off in the Q&A section.
So, to answer your question, the RAM is halved, the storage is more readily accessible but also halved... is it worth the $50 dollars you save? Sure! It has the same specs and price of the Kindle fire, but with SD storage as well, and the Fire works just fine with 512 mb of RAM.

No the RAM is indeed halved. All of the mainstream tech sites are reporting this, it's not a rumor.
As for partitioning, Nook Tabs are veeery picky about partition schemes,nso that's kinda dangerous. But the current alpha of CM7 gets you better access to the storage, and future releases are planned to allow full access.
my appolgies. tis a problem i usualy have figuring out which forum to post in, this seemed like the likely canidate since there were allready so many posts about the nook tablet 8gb. I will try to keep in mind that this is for tech questions only.

For $50 twice the ram and more storage (at least when you put CM7 on it). it seems easily worth it.
My opinion - definitely not worth it.
I got CM7 running on it, and I can see just how important it is.
You won't be running BN's ROM forever, and when you switch to CM7 (with CM9 coming soon, it seems), you really gonna wish you had that RAM, trust me.
I bought a NT last week on Ebay from B&N for $199. Not sure if they are still on sale, but you might check.
If it was a 1GB RAM / 8 GB storage deal, I'd have said the Kindle Fire had some real competition.
As it is, I'd definitely go for the 16 GB version. Not because of the extra storage, but those extra 512 MB in RAM are going to make a difference down the road. What was B&N thinking? Their real advantage over the Fire (RAM) is now gone!
Personally I'd shell out the extra few bucks for the RAM as well. If it were just the storage being reduced, I'd go with it, but the RAM is too important, imo.

They're thinking that many consumers don't seem to know or care about the RAM (or other advantages of the Nook hardware), they just look at the price tag and $199 for the Fire beats $249. I hope it helps, though they've got a mountain to climb to overcome the Amazon ecosystem and Appstore.

If only I'd known this 2 days ago when I bought an 8GB version while being in the USA... Figured the 8GB less flash wasn't a big deal if you're using an SD card anyway, and not knowing about the RAM I "saved" some bucks. Now I'm back in Belgium with an 8GB Nook, with half the RAM too, and at the moment unable to run CM... Great
Anyway, I hope someone can get it to root and/or run CM soon!

I certainly don't know the NT well, but I just helped my father in law get a 8GB tablet configured for its basic functionality. I'd like to be able to set it up to run non-BN sanctioned android apps, and from what I have found there is currently no known way to put go launcher or something similar in place that will allow it to be used for general android apps. This is a huge drawback, IMO. Hopefully in a reasonable time there will be some workarounds, but from the searches I have done, this is not currently doable. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
My father-in-law didn't want to put up the extra 50 bucks and I didn't realize at the time that there was much difference other than the extra storage. I had just assumed that with a 32GB SD card that it would be more than enough memory, but it seems there are other issues since it uses the new 1.4.2 OS too. It looks like B&N is deadset to make sure users can't use it for anything other than their apps. I'm thinking that he should just return the 8GB NT and go for the 16GB version instead.
They have figured out how to boot off an SD card for the 8G, now they are moving that over to the rooting SD versions and the recovery versions.
It will take a little bit of time but I think we will see a lot of progress in this next week.

I actually agree very much with this. The Kindle Fire's also ahead in terms of custom ROMs since it's not locked up. I chose the Nook Tablet (16 GB version) because I could buy it from my school bookstore and also use it with textbooks from my school.
If you have to choose between 8GB Nook Tab and 16GB Nook Tab, go with the 16 GB one. But if you're choosing between an 8GB Nook Tab and a Kindle Fire, I'd go with the Fire.

Okay, this is a common misconception about computer storage vs. memory. They're not really the same thing, although the words used to describe them are very similar.
RAM/Memory = How much your computer can keep loaded up temporarily. Think of it as how much someone could be thinking about at once - RAM is important for a computer or device to be able to multi-task.
Storage/Disk space = How much information a computer can recall. Think of it as how much someone could remember.
Now, storage allows you to have more files on your device, but RAM allows your device to be more powerful and run more applications at once.
My Prime is being repaired.It's been in for repair almost a month. (It'll be one month on the 28th) I dunno how much longer it's going to be. I understand that these things sometimes take time. Hurry work is worry work, as they say.
I'm thinking that perhaps I should just buy another tablet while I wait. Any recommendations? What would be a nice compliment to the Prime?
Right now A510 Iconia from Acer, 300 from Asus or that other tablet that everyone knows about I would say
Xoom is on 4.0.4 now could find one of those or Kindle Fire cheap on craigslist if you are into hackery
If you like to tinker, consider a Nook Color. They are easily rooted and there are many fun roms for it turning it into a full android tablet - both HC and ICS. It's a great secondary tab but doesn't really repeat the place of the Prime (in spec or price). When I ordered the Prime I passed mine onto my 8 yr old. They've come down in price quite a bit -- most of ours have been refurbished and work great.

Don't bother with an Acer. They are heavy, thick, development and company support are slow. I owned an A500, bought it on release day last year. It STILL doesn't have ICS.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I think a good compliment to the Prime would be an iPad2. I don't think I'd pony up for the newer one, but you might find a good deal on a barely used iPad2.

I want to stick with Android. However the only strength the iPad has over an Android device is being able to take it to an Apple store and have it swapped out if they determine it cannot be repaired. I've heard this from Apple users.
Wish I had that option with the Prime. I'd consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus but it has not HDMI output.
I miss not having my Prime. Driving me crazy!
Nook color for $135.00? sounds like it would be worth buying and rooting knowing 'l have my Prime back.

I think you'll like the nook... I used it last night to update stuff for my kid and still enjoyed using it even though I'd just set down my prime.

Totally possible. The kindle app works, the nook app works... I prefer to import them all into calibre and then use Aldiko to read all my books. Nook Color has a lot of flexibility. The cool thing is that it boots from the sdcard by default so you really can't brick it... if you mess it up, you just make a good sd image and boot into it. We actually have 3 of them in the house (shhhh)

Hmmm...great suggestions up here. If I do get the extra $$$$, Nook color and then rooting it would be fun! I've looked on youtube for directions. is there anything definitive up here on XDA on how to do this?

Mark: Go for a refurbed unit. you can pick em up on a ebay or overstock.com. B&N unloads the refurbs in both places. Or look for a used one on CraigsList. Don't spend more than $130 to $150. And $150 sounds high to me.
Just my opinion but I think you are just throwing away $35 for that card. If you have a medium speed microsd card laying around the house you can do it yourself. In my experience, and I have done about 15 to 20 cards for friends, your best bet is a 16 or 32 GB medium speed card from a reputable company. Hard to go wrong with Sandisk. I have had horrible experiences with Class 10 cards. They just never worked; lots and lots of crashes and forced closures. Huge improvement by using Class 4 cards. Cheaper and they work so much better.
If you Google instructions for turning you Nook into an android tablet and you will come up with a ton of (easy) instructions. Great instructions here on XDA just do a search.
If by any chance you are a Mac user send me a private message. I will send you a link to my Box for the whole kit and kaboodle for free. You can download the instructions and the required files. You can make the card and turn the Nook into a great little 7" android tablet in about 20 minutes. With a bathroom break.
I gave my Nook to my daughter when I got a 7" Galaxy. In some ways I like the Nook better than the Galaxy.
Performance is ok. With the hack I have you can kick the processor speed up a bit. It's fine for simple stuff. I even enjoyed watching movies on it. I used Handbrake to convert ripped videos into a format that worked fine on the Nook. It's a 7" screen. So it's never gonna resemble your 55" 240HZ LED but its fine to watch on a plane. I think its pretty amazing for the cost. You can access apps from the Market (damn I mean Google Play). I used Pulse on mine and it worked fine. Not much of a gamer so I can't share anything.
The version of CM7 I have allows you to dual boot from the card. If the card is not in the Nook it will operate just like a stock B&N Nook. Put the card in and you will get boot screen on startup. Its fine for reading too.

Unfortunately, I'm not a Mac user. I'm a Linux guy. I've done my share of installs and disk wipes to get Linux on a system, so I'm familair with these processes. So, yeah, after you spelled it all out, $35.00 is a bit steep when I can do it myself.
Not sure if this would be of any interest but newegg has asus tf101 refurbished for 274.00.

It's stupid simple. in the Mac I just used Terminal to enter the 'linux' instructions.
gotta be every bit as simple on a Linux box. And on-liine instructions will be super easy to find.
Again, I would recommend the original color nook - cheap, thin, light, almost pocketable - and different enuf from the Prime to make it a nice addition to your mobile needs.

Okay. My Prime has been repaired and shipped. I should get it by Wednesday. As soon as it's back up and running, I just may do the Nook thing.

Has anyone else sent in their Prime to Asus for repair that can comment on the turn-around time and the costs?
i am looking for a tablet for my kids and the nook is an option. i noticed there are to versions one for 150 the other for 200. my question is whats the difference between them and if i go for the 150 one is it rootable? (mind you this is for kids so i dont want to spend an arm and leg for something they could possibly break}

:fingers-crossed:Well this question may get a whole lot of different answers depending who you ask, Also there is not enough details from the word "tablet" and price "150" & "200". I give it a shot since I have kids of my own. The price between 150 & 200 if its nook tablet 8 gig or 16gig, I would take the 16gig for a 150 or the question that could arise is why not buy a new Google nexus 7 8 gig (has gps) for that price 200 not including tax. Going back to the kids, the nook tablet is fairly durable due to the nature of drops that been performed by me and the kids. I have seen full front glass tablet dropped and it's not going to take the abuse like the nook tablet since it's not made with the full front glass. Give it time and it depending on the quantity that is being used, it's no doubt that it will be a root procedure for it.
The nook tablet is fine, especially for smaller kids. Very durable, I've dropped mine a few times.
If you're not tied into the Amazon ecosystem I'd go for the Nook.
Personally I prefer the nook over the kindle.

More expensive: 16GB storage, 1GB RAM
Less expensive: 8GB storage, 512GB RAM
That's about it. Size shape, size, and color.
Is this tablet worth the asking price? I currently returned my Nvidia Shield Tablet because the quality felt a little meh, and the screen kept showing distortion by pushing it.
Any thoughts and suggestions?
I would really like to stick to Android and this seems to be the closest to the quality of the Air 2.
Would I be ok with the 16 GB?
not worth it for most people imho. lotsa problems if you check all the existing threads. somehow the majority in the threads, including me, are only getting 5-7 hours or screen time web browsing when the pro reviews show ~9hrs (videos are fine - 10hrs+), memory leaks needing daily reboots (which could be fixed by a patch), light bleed, removal of the ability to adjust the volumes without going into settings (you can only adjust the volume of what's being used at the time you press the volume button - ringer, alerts, media aren't expandable).
i still love mine for now, but i'd never tell anyone to buy one until google patches the software problems. the hardware is decent but far from premium. i'd say at $250 it's a good deal, $300 is fair, but at $400 there are other options.
i got it because i just got my hands on a old galaxy tab 8.9. i used to have one when they first came out and i loved the size. i have a note 8, but kinda not digging the size any more. i considered the 8.4, but the nexus at 8.9 - 4:3 is as tall as the 8.4 @ 16:10 and as wide as a 10.1 @ 16:10. for me it makes for better browsing and reading. some people prefer not having black bars in movies, but the size of the image will be the same on an 8.4 16:10 as it is on the 4:3 nexus.
also, the speakers are nice. i haven't had a tablet with sound this good since my archos 101t.

I have the 32gb Nexus 9. I bought an open box 16gb first but I donated that to my daughter and got the 32gb. Having said that I have noticed no build quality issues with either one of them. It looks good and feels very solid. I have owned many different devices and the Nexus 9 is built better than most. In order for me to use a 16gb device it has to have a microsd card slot.

I really like the design of the nexus 9 and the look is very beautiful though! I'm sure most software problems will be patched but I expected lollipop to be a smoother transition.

I, too, wish the Nexus 9 was cheaper. Heck, I wish most things in life are cheaper.
With that said, I had my Nexus 9 16GB since almost day 1 (day 3 to be exact) and have been loving it. Unlike some people who have complained on the forum, I am fortunately among the Nexus 9 owners who never had a single problem.
You may be able to get a laptop at around $600 but it would be a crappy one and it would still be a laptop and not a tablet, which have very different functions. Some of the cons of a laptop being heavier, harder to just pick up and use, lack of touch screen... etc. If you DO for some reason want an "actual computer" for work, then no tablet is ideal for you.
I got the 16 GB also. Instead of forking over extra cash for additional 16 GB space I put the money towards a WiFi HD. All I need now is cifs support.
I'm thinking of Getting the 16 GB model, then using an OTG cable and putting a usb stick when ever i need to watch movies.
I'll just put minor TV Shows or Movies on the tablet that I watch on subway (although I watch mostly on my phone on subway).
Everyone bought the 16 GB version though LOL, I need to find one

The price is very Expensive. for the same price you can get a Samsung Tab S which has a superior Screen and the addition of microSD, also 3 GB ram.
This tab should have been 300 price for standard and 400 for 32 GB...also 680+ for LTE? I'm sorry but no LTE card is worth an additional 150$
Anyways I'm going to go pick one up today hopefully if I can find one.

Get one of these microSD card readers:
http://www.meenova.com/
It is very small so it will not get in the way as bad as a OTG cable and usb drive.

You will need something like ESfile Explorer to see the device when you use it on your Nexus but it works perfectly.

That's no problem, to watch movies I usually use ES anyways since it also has root access.
i know with archos media player you can index just about any non-root folder, even networked shares (paid version, dunno about the free) and other media players shouldn't have any problems directly accessing a mounted drive.
i considered using my otg cables but i didn't want to lose the ability to charge and use an external drive if it ever came down to it. helluva lot cheaper thought, lol.
I was lucky enough to find an open box Nexus 9 32GB so I saved give or take about 75$. So I ended up paying 25$ extra or so for an extra 16 GB. Will open it when i get home.

dunno where you got it from, but amazon has the 32 for 429 and bb will price match. I got my 16gb for 350 plus tax new.

As you can see from my profile pic I'm from Canada, and Best Buy will only price match with the Canadian Amazon. Either way I came out about the same with the open box, the only downside is that it was opened but looking it over it's literally brand new.
Don't rule out Swappa. I bought a brand new, sealed 16GB Black Nexus 9 for $330 shipped/no tax, and went on online chat with Google Play Store to transfer ownership of the serial number to me.
Hope you enjoy it. I've made the decision to keep mine and let go of the note 8. Gonna miss using the s pen when taking recipe note while cooking. Lecture notes and a standard capacitive pen will make do until thet make a 9" note. I don't regret my purchase and like the 4:3 more than I thought I would.
I ended up returning it because it had a lot of screen bleed. I'm just going to wait and see what happens when the nvidia x1 comes out.

I went through too many exchanges with the nvidia shield to do it with this one...and this is around 200$ more. I'll just wait and see of any revisions fix the problem.

I am a new HAM2 L03 owner, I purchased the phone used on eBay, but I've seen something curious, the internal memory is displaying as it was 8 gb, but this phone is supposed to have 16 gb internal memory, can you guys help me with this issue?
I'm attaching a screen shot of the internal memory.
There was an 8Gb model sold at WalMart for a short period of time. This is probably one of those. I can tell you it cannot be updated to Lollipop, yet. Check your eBay auction and see if it was advertised as 16Gb. It is actually most likely the reason it was sold off. Sorry for the bad news.

I was under the impression that it was the exact same as the 16 gb and the only difference was the 8 gb storage. Not sure, though, as I don't have the 8 Gb.
Thank you two for your help! according to one image on the link that xordos provided, the Mate 2 Slim has a 3740 mAh battery compared to the regular 3900 / 4100 mAh battery that the HAM2 has, I think it's not a very big difference. I've been using the cellphone since thrusday and I coulndn't be happier, I don't think I can go back to another cellphone that wouldn't provide at least the same battery life and doesn't have the same screen size. I payed $120 USD for it, so I won't complain to the seller (I think this is a good price) if someone is reading this and has doubts about the slim version, my opinion is if you get a really good price, go for it!!!
Curious. How much room does that leave you for apps? If you find its not enough. Root plus link2sd app works great.

If I recall correctly, it is 1.9 gb usable for apps. I will need to use link2sd!
