[Q] Is the tip of the note 10.1 s pen supposed to be different than the note 2 s pen? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I tried my friends note 10.1 tablet today and was surprised to find how much better it felt to use that s pen. The tip didnt seem to slide as smoothly or fast, seemed like there was more friction almost like rubber which caused my writing to look much neater. Is that just a difference between the two pens?

Yes. It takes to my Note II as smooth as a babys ass too.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using XDA Premium HD app

Yeah, and there are different nibs that you can switch out on those too. Only drawback is those pens of course won't fit inside the slot in the phone. LucidMike on YouTube talked about this in one of his videos, check it out he's got a lot of good info.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app

Thanks very much guys. Its a shame samsung didnt make the nibs the same because the one in the note 10.1 is incredible.
I cant wait till samsung throws a 2560x160p display in a note tablet so I can sell my nexus 10. Stock android is overrated when it has so many problems and bugs haha.

Is it just me or does anybody else not like the 10.1's tip? I feel like it doesn't drag on the screen as good as the Note 2's

Oh its definitely less smooth than the note 2 but thats why I like it more. Its more rubbery and the resistance makes my writing and drawing more accurate

I'm sorry, but my pockets aren't that big, and I'm not going to cary a murse...
Okay yes I actually do think it should be a but bigger. After using it for a month it is getting smaller lol. 7.7 is definitely tablet sized so no. I would do like a 6.3 or 5.9

5.3 is my limit. I think that 5.3 with no bezel would amazing.
7.7 is too small for a tablet IMO, even my wife's kindle fire feels weird to me. The extra 2" on my ipad is hard to give up.

Anything bigger than 5.3" is definitely moving out of phone territory.
ok i give in
Ok guys my be your right may be 5.8" the most i love this phone but its a big mother dam it lol. its hard to pull out of my pocket when shopping at walmart to anwser phone
5.7 should be the limit. & extra space be for touch buttons.

Anyone come from the Note 10.1?

Hey everyone, I'm loving the Nexus 10 right now but I'm not sure it fits my needs perfectly. Did anyone come from the Note 10.1? What were your impressions of it compared to the Nexus? I'm really torn right now. I'm a student, so I would definitely use the pen.

I gave up my Note 10.1 for a Nexus 10 and overall i'm glad I did. I love the screen on the Nexus 10, perfect for watching movies on. With the Note the screen was always a bit dim when watching movies.
I do miss TouchWiz because I found the launcher much more smoother than Google Stock however I'm using Apex on the Nexus 10 and it's so impressive. All in all very pleased I made the switch. :good:
Have you tried using a capacitive stylus on the Nexus? I ordered one from amazon, still waiting for my actual nexus to arrive but I'm looking forward to using it -- I'm also a student and will be taking tons of notes on it. I've seen plenty of my fellow students using iPad with a capacitive stylus to take notes on and they all love it -- I ordered a much thinner tipped stylus and I'm hoping that will be a good fit for writing.
Anyways, I don't have experience with the note but if you miss the pen then perhaps a thin tipped stylus for the N10 will be good?

I previously had the Note 10.1 and find the Nexus 10 a far nicer piece of kit. Speedwise, I couldn't tell the difference but the build quality of the Note wasn't great with the chassis creaking on occasion! Also, I didn't think that the 10.1 screen was terribly good even by 1280x800 standards.

Really? After seeing alot of 800p tablets on display in a shop, I thought the Note 10.1 screen looked noticeably better than all of them. Especially the colour saturation and black level.

I thought so. I had a Transfomer Prime at the time as well and thought the display in that was far nicer. This being said, I'm no expert and my opinion is certainly subjective! However, the build quality of the Note 10 was definitely inferior - never happy when a tablet bends slightly and creaks whilst doing so!
I came from the Note 10.1 and enjoyed it a lot. The spen does add to a very solid tablet. Drawing with it was pretty amazing, very precise. It was smooth and performed very well for me. Only reason I left was due to the standard screen and slow charge (yes I know its the same for N10 but its only because they haven't released the Pogo Pin charger yet). I wanted an HD screen. When N10 came out and read of the specs similar to Note 10.1 but newer /faster Exynos chip and the best [email protected] I was sold.

Writing on the nexus 10 with a capacitive stylus will be extremely uncomfortable since you will have to hold your hand/arm above the glass constantly. The note 10.1 has a digitizer therefore you can rest your hand on the glass and it ignores the skin touch and only picks up the pen touch.
Imagine trying to write on a piece of paper with your hand and arm hovering above the paper the whole time = impossible

I think you can if the developer codes it into their apps. But it'd have to be pretty genius to get it working properly.

The Note 10.1 is the most complete tablet experience on the market right now bar none. Its only downside is the 720P display. It's as fast and fluid (on JB) as the N10 and gets better battery life because of the lower res display. As a student multiview, S-Pen/S-Note, and some of the other features could make a huge difference in your productivity. The N10 is a better value and a better consumption device but as a productivity and creation device nothing compares to the Note. And there's no combination of third party apps or dev tweaks that will change that.
Here's a list of features on the Note not on the N10. You can decide how meaningful any of them are based on what you use your tablet for. I'm a huge productivity user and would only give up the Note to get another Note with a FHD display.
- Multiview (enhanced in JB)
- Pop up play
- S-Pen/S-Note
- AllShare Play and Cast
- Enhanced camera features (smile/face/blink detection, buddy shot)
- Mini apps (enhanced in JB)
- Enhanced audio and video codec support
- IR port
- Browser h/w acceleration
- S-Voice (added in JB)
- Air View (added in JB)
- Group Cast (added in JB)
Here's a list of some more new features in JB. Some are really cool and can't be replicated on any other tablet (even via third party apps).
Video Air View – Preview videos without opening them. View future/past scenes in a playing video via the timeline without stopping it.
Photo Air View – Pictures contained in folders will display in thumbnails when you hover over the folder. They advance nine at a time.
E-Mail Air View – Hover the pen over a heading or contents of an e-mail summary (including via the widget) to see an exploded view of the contents without opening it.
S-Planner Air View – Hover the pen over an event or task to see an exploded view without opening it.
Pop Up Note – Tap the screen twice with the S-Pen button depressed and a pop up note will be displayed. Even on the lock screen when the device is locked. On the N8000, if you’re in a call and remove the S-Pen from its holder, a pop up note automatically opens.
Easy Clip – Capture anything on the display (lasso) anywhere and save it to the clipboard or send it an application (including S-Note).
Draw/Write on an e-mail – As it says.
Draw/Write in S-Planner – As it says (Month View only)
Color Picker – In S-Note, set the ink color to a color selected from a picture.
Pen Switch – Select multiple pen types (color, texture, weight) and toggle through them without opening the menu by pressing the button on the S-Pen once.
Sketch Affect – Change any picture to an outline, color sketch, pencil sketch and more from within S-Note.
Share S-Notes – Convert S-Notes to plain text, PDFs, or pictures and share them via Facebook etc. in one step.
Photo Note – Write personal notes on the back of photos
Gallery Organizer – Create folders and drag and drop pictures between them.
Quick Gestures - Open apps and perform functions by writing on the display.
And the display on the Note is better than the N10's at brightness and contrast. So living with it isn't as painful as some make it seem.
My Nexus 10 comes next week finally! :victory:
So yh I'll definitely be doing some comparison videos of Nexus 10 vs Note 10.1 as I've seen quite a few threads comparing the two.
So I ended up selling my nexus 10 and getting the note. So far I am really happy with My choice, this Seems like the perfect tabletfor my needs. I will say, I Miss the screen a little.

I think not.
On the Note-series Samsung are using Wacom technology - both on the screen and on the pen.
Your normal touchscreen is capacitive. And so are the Notes.
BUT they also add a inductive screen layer - that's what triggering the pen.
By charging a magnetic field above the screen - which charges the pen and makes it function, you can decide if you want both capacitive and inductive touch - or just one input signal.
I have the Note 2 and it's really good and some differences between the Note pen and a standard stylus is that the Note pen is pressure-sensitive - up to 1024 zones of pressure. It also registers HOW you're holding the pen, laying it down, using it straight down, and more.
Not forgetting Airview - you can hover the pen over objects and it will function as you would do with your mouse on your computer - popup menus are working on everyday websites, you can preview movie scenes in the timeline, and so on.
A normal stylus is just a replacement for your finger.
being someone who has no interest in the spen, my major yearning for the note 10.1 is the multiview capability. I am a big youtube watcher and i constantly find my self wanting to use gtalk or the web browser while watching a video on my current tablet. With the huge resolution of the nexus 10, it seems the like the PERFECT tablet for that feature. That being said, has anyone worked on trying to get the multiview capability ported to other devices? I mean I am sure its 100% software implementation, so it seems possible to add it to a custom ROM. Just wondering if there has been any work or even if anyone has looked into this?

This. A thousand times this. I have zero issues with my N10, but I'm mildly envious of the Note 10.1 for multiview. I'm guessing the next Note with a higher res screen will be the "best of both worlds", but alas, I'm not willing to wait. Hoping Google pilfers this feature and builds it into Key Lime Pie.
You would be surprised how much you use the spen. I am converted.

Once you start using it you're pretty much hooked. I replaced a Teg3 One X I was happy with for a Note II so I could get S-Pen on my phone and share S-Note's between my devices. The Note 10.1 got ****ty reviews because very few reviewers "got it" or spent any time trying to. Of all the devices I've owned the two Notes are the most complicated to figure out if you intend to fully use all their features. I was still finding things weeks after I got the 10.1. And if those things don't matter people should by the N10 because it's cheaper, easier, and a better pure consumption device.
The Note 10.1 is by far the better tablet if you're looking to use a stylus at all. I've only had the TF101 and the GN10.1, but the difference between the a capacitive stylus (like the adonit jot) and the spen is ridiculously large. You'll kick yourself for thinking that the capacitive stylii you see on the market are anywhere near as useful as the wacom stylii (which of course, require a wacom interface built within the tablet).
On the other hand, if you care only about browsing videos, pictures, and surfing the web, there's no point in paying more for a stylus you won't use.
Bottom line is that you shouldn't listen to the idiot reviewers who didn't use the Note 10.1 as its intended audience. They were all just looking for iPad-esque tablets and not looking at what the Note 10.1 really is.

Note2 to S4 people, here's my thoughts on the move, post yours as well!

Nobody's really posted a real-life usage of Note2 vs S4 so here's my observations for those wondering.
I still have both the Note2 and S4.. and before that I had the S3.
I also currently have the Razr M as my "Spare" phone for when I feel like popping my sim into it on nights or events when I don't want to chance the loss or damage to my nicer more expensive phones. So I can throw out some comparisons against the RazrM since it's still my favorite "small yet powerful" Android phone.
1) Wow factor: Whether it be a ridiculous wow or a wow that's cool goes to the Note2.. The sheer screen size is still noticeable when using smaller phones and then using the Note2.. It's just big and watching videos/gaming is a real treat and joy. Despite having 720p on a larger 5.5, its still crisp and clear and nobody's streaming 1080p (Netflix/Hulu) to phones yet so the Note2 is still viable and current. I know that there's a Youtube apk hack that allows for 1080p but aside from that I haven't seen any apps using 1080p artwork yet.
2) Size: S4 obviously.. Light light light, deceptively light body. Thin thin thin.. Not a whole lot thinner than the Note2 but thinner. And a lot lighter. Since i have the RazrM, the S4 feels about the same in pocket and in hand as far as weight goes. And even if the RazrM is shorter and has a smaller width, the two feel the same in my pocket which is important to guys who like to pocket their phones. The Note2 in pocket has a horrible feel (for me) and just makes everything awkward for me.. Sitting down, driving the car, etc.. the Note2 is just clearly uncomfortable in my pocket and feels out of place. Like cramming something in your pocket that shouldn't go in there in the first place is the feeling I always get.. This is WITHOUT a case even on the Note2.. Cased up my pockets are even more ridiculous. This is why I feel the S4 is probably the biggest screensize/chassis phone I could ever deal with as a daily driver. it's a breeze to pull out of your pocket even while sitting. On the topic of size, it's trickier taking phone calls on the Note2 as you have to use precision to make sure the earpiece is aiming into your ear.. sometimes you end up missing where the earpiece is and not hearing people briefly until you correct it.
Note 2: 6.34oz
S4: 4.59oz
3) Battery life: Editing this in later, too early to tell, but I can tell you right now charging from 0% to 100% is night and day from the Note2 to S4.
4) Reception/Signal/Data speed: future edit..
Please add your experiences from going from the Note2 to the S4!

my thoughts exactly, but i have smallish hands. i liked the note 2 a lot but it was ultimately just too big for me. Love the S4, but would be fine with a 4.3 or 4.7 Moto X phone with top specs i think my perfect size is somewhere between, maybe 4.5 and 4.7. But 5.0 and 1080p is SHAWEEET

This, and when I need to use my phone one handed the Note 2 was far too difficult to manage.. For me I feel that 5" is the very max I can deal with.. It's too early to tell though and 5" might be even too big for me and I have big hands (i'm a dude).
I keep flipping back and forth between my Note 2 and the S4. I use the Note 2 for work and school (Snotes and the S-Pen). I have large hands and can operate it just fine one handed. I love the battery life, I can go all dat with heavy use and still have 30% when I get home at night.
That being said, I also love the S4 even with it's size difference. The main improvements for me are the screen, IR blaster (yes I am using it a remote) and the OS. I will look at an extended battery when they come out, but I am never far from a charger....and if I know that I will be, I take the Note 2.

I just switched over to a S4 from the Note 2. Biggest difference that I keep noticing is screen size. The larger screen on the Note 2 is awesome but as a lot of people have mentioned it's near to impossible to use one handed and for me one handed use is important. If you're on the fence just because of screen size I'd say go with the S4 cause that little difference in screen size won't really be worth it for the loss of ergonomics.

Well I sold off my N2 so i'm sticking to the S4.. I am sure the N3 will have me wanting it when that time comes in 6~ months I'm just not sure I will want to deal with a phablet again, the size was just a bit annoying but it was a joy and pleasure to use the N2, I will miss the easy to read, large screen

It's so Big...

Never used any of the Note devices before and only glanced at them in the store. I just knew it had the features I wanted in a phone, so I pre-ordered. Yet when it arrived yesterday I don't think my mind was prepared for just how big of a device this is. I came from a Gnex so it's quite the change. The speed on this device is incredible though, love that. Don't love that it looks like I'm holding a brick to my face when talking.
I find I'm having trouble finding places to keep on my person without it looking too obtrusive in pockets. Any thoughts fellow Note users? I'm seriously considering returning it for a smaller device, like a LG G2...
P.S. Hell no to a holster / belt clip

I went from Gnex to Note II to the 3. I know what you're feeling. Honestly give it a day or two. You'll be used to the size before you even realize it. You'll pick up your Gnex and wonder how you ever used a phone so small.
As nice as the G2 is, this her Note 3 is one beast of a phone. Give it some time. I swore I'd never get rid of my Note 2, and only did so to get the 3. This is honestly the best phone I've ever used and could never see myself using anything but the Note line.

You will need more than a day. Give it a week or 2...by that time the device will be normal.

Trust me just give it time and it will seem normal size to you. I went from a note 2 to an HTC one and although the phone was nice I hated how small it was. At least in my opinion everything else is too small after having the note. I usually keep it in my back pocket.

I am coming from S3 and the Note is much larger, it will be a more of a challenge to keep it in a pants pocket but hopefully it won't be too much of an adjustment, and I plan to get a very thin case to go with it. But the positives of having the larger screen far outweigh this minor inconvenience.
Coming from an S3 I have to say the size doesn't bother me at all. I don't have big hands, but it just seems to feel right.

Yeah, I got a spigen Neo-Hybrid case but it feels too slim and doesn't make me feel like the device will be safe if I drop it from ANY height.
As for the pros of a larger screen, I have a Nexus 7 (which now feels pointless). So that serves to feed my need for a large screen. I just can't help but feel for my go - to service, it should be more...compact.

Coming from an S3 I have to say the size doesn't bother me at all. I don't have big hands, but it just seems to feel right.

I feel like the ergonomics of the device are good, it still feels like a chore to stuff in a secure place when out and about though.
I guess I'll give it more than 2 days. We have what, 14 days to return if we're unhappy? Here's hoping I adjust. I really do like the features and the stylus. Although many have said you tend to stop using the stylus after a while.

I hope you're right. I just wish I could stuff it in my front pocket without making it look like I have a rectangular chub...just sayin.

[Q] Stylus

Just wondering if anyone has tried another stylus with the Pro? I'm thinking of getting the new version of the Bamboo Feel, but haven't heard if it is compatible or not. Are there any thicker styli with erasers, by any chance?
I want to know about this, too

Planning to do a lot of drawing on this tab, when the LTE version drops.

Hi,
I have been using the 8pi stylus with my note 12.2 and it works like a charm. Much better then the twig that comes with the tablet

Can you confirm is this stylus pixel accurate with the Note 12.2? Many times, even though they work, other styluses are off by a few pixels to one side. I'd hate to see someone needing a better pen for serious artwork run into this without knowing about it.
I notice that two of the reviews of that pen list that problem with Galaxy tablets.
Would really appreciate if you could check and let us know for certain.
I checked and the penabled stylus with my old LE1600 Tablet PC works with the 12.2, but of course it has the dreaded 4 pixel shift problem. It's such a rotten shame, because in every way it's a fantastic stylus and feels so comfortable in the hand (and there are tons of penabled Tablet PC styluses that are cheap). It makes the 12.2 feel like a really good drawing tablet compared to so-so with the s-Pen, but that pixel shift means it can't really be used for accurate drawing. It's too much of a difference from where you're pressing and where the line gets drawn to be trusted for serious drawing, but it'll pass for note-taking.
Anyway, please check this out if you can.

Hi
I just recieved another one and they both work perfectly for me, the marks are made exactly on the tip. I use this tablet mostly for taking notes in the class and sometimes drawing anatomy structures (med student). Absolutely love it

+1 on this. Just what I want to know.
Anyone who can advise on stylus accuracy, for those of us who haven't picked up a Pro 12.2, thank you in advance for all specifics you can share!
Hi Guys,
So brief update on the 8pi pen, I have attached some pics that should clarify that the pen works the same as the stock pen. I have had no issues with writing, drawing or otherwise with either pens.
Hope this answers your questions

Hello,
Could you please tell me if you can replace the hard white tips with softer black rubber(ish) tips with the 8pi? I marked up my o.g. 10.1 with hard plastic ones(I have a heavy hand when drawing) & i don't wanna have that happen on this tab. Thank you advance.

The pen comes with both hard and soft tips, you can replace them, I personally use hard tips on if I have a screen protector on, otherwise soft tips work nicely
appreciate the response

ExtremeRyno, please post your results with the stylus here. And any drawings you care to share. I'm waiting for the ATT LTE version to come out, so I'm curious about what drawing apps you use, how the accuracy feels to you &c.
(On the iPad, I've gotten a lot of good stuff with Sketchbook Pro—but the fat-tipped styluses bite!)

Very satisfied with my purchase. The size is just about the same as a regular ink pen. I'm thinking of putting on a rubber grip on it..just gotta figure out what to do about the button. I guess mark the location with a paint drop.

That's great —I'm sold. Thank you for posting. Love the artwork!
I ordered the following, thought it was the same, but it has the offset :-/ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B5ZQX0A/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the exact one I got. I'm 100% satisfied, and I'm not experiencing any offset. Have you tried changing out the nib for one that came with your original S-Pen? Not sure if that would make a difference, but worth a shot, I guess.
Bamboo is ok, hard tip. The Samsung be pen works great. Full thick pen. Pricey but nice
