[Q] What to do if I lost access to my internal storage as well as sd card - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, new guy with english problems here, be gentle
So basically I lost access to any kind of storage on my SGS2 running CM10.1. Here's what happened. I was using internal and sd for a long time, then, as I needed my SDHC elsewhere i removed it. Nothing was lost as all data was stored internally. BUT. After formatting SD in FAT32 and putting it back everything crashed. Apps are refusing to work, demanding an SD card. Files Manager says that folder was lost. All of them. First thing I wanted to do was to flash CM once again, a newer NB but my PC does not read internal storage either, and putting it in sd doesn't do me any good as cwm doesn't see it also. CM can access internal, so i flashed the same version of CM once again - the only one i got there. Nothing changed. I'm a bit lost and seek any advice

U checked if u really format it with Fat32?

Sure. Also I formatted it with SDFormatter, thanks to this CWM can mount it and format by itself, but OS does not respond anyway

SD Card doesnt mount in Android, xrec is ok

I have recently upgrade to android 2.3.3 and am using EWJET as a rom.
I cannot access the SD once Android OS has booted. All apps and the system/settings says SD Card isn't mounted. Tried multiple installs, nothing works.
All 2.1/2.2 Roms are fine.
If i tap back during start-up and access xrecovery I have normal access to the SDcard and can flash packages etc. So the phone is able to access the card ok.
My SD card is the 8gb that came with the phone and isnt partitioned in anyway.
However in the past I did have it partitioned, but not now. Incase I am installing 2.3.3 and the rom wrong, ill tell you my steps.
Factory Firmware 2.1 flashed
rooted, busybox and recovery installed
Flashed X10i_3.0.1.G.0.75_only_kernel_baseband
then install the EWJET rom as per his instructions..
I pray I am only doing the above steps wrong as I desperately want the SD working on 2.3.3.
Any help would be appreciated.

you try pulling it out and blowing on it like an old nes game...
jk smiles but have you tried perhaps throwing the sd into a computer and just formatting with different cluster sizes or in general formatting the card. Might need to use an adapter.
Happen the same thing to me but with wolfbreaks rom... some people told me to re-flash the rom but it didnt work. The funny thing is the the sd card will work on any other device, and any other sd card will work on the phone... havent try re-formatting the card cauze i dont have the adapter but it should work

you might want to get an adapter. A while back i tried setting up a sd-ext partition on a 4gig card and long story short the only way i was able to run a format that gave me back the 4gigs was throwing it into an adapter
Had the same thing when I updated with stock-2.3.3.... At the time I had it partitioned in 2 partitions...
I connected the phone then with my pc, and there it was, alive and well.... So I backed up the entire card, that is, the first partition, where all my data were; I powered off the phone, took it out, found a adapter, deleted the 2nd partition with Partition Wizard Home Edition Minitool, made the sd-card 1 partition only, formatted that partition, and then I copied all my backed-up data back to the card
Then I put the card back in the phone, booted and voila: the card was recognized again by 2.3.3....! and now it functions ok!
Hope this helps, greetz, good luck,
kwarkje

formatting did not help
Anything new on this?
for me it is a little different. The card that came with the phone works fine with the GB update, the thing is that I got another phone, this one came with a 4 Gb card so I took the one in the x10 with all my pics and put it in my new phone and put the other new card in the x10 but it doesn't recognize it...
I've tried with 2 different cards, in xRec i can read it, back up, etc, but once in android its like there's nothing there. Tried formatting it with no results....
What could it be that it reads the original x10 card and no other?
Ive got no idea, but its annoying. Im gonna have to go back to 2.1 which sucks.
We need to some how figure out whats causing this. Ive tried everything.
2.3 seems to be the problem.

[Q] Why is my internal storage gone?

My tablet has 8GB of onboard storage and is partitioned. 1GB as "tablet memory" and the other 6GB (approx) as an "internal SD" with the remaining for the ROM. Just recently I noticed that the 6GB partition went missing. It is no longer available to me. However, the tablet restarts and loads the ROM just fine. It also loads my external sdcard just fine too. I'm guessing something is wrong with the partition table? Or is the hardware toast?
I figure since the 1GB is still showing up that it isn't a hardware failure, but I'm not sure. I tried reinstalling my ROM, factory resetting, mounting the internal sd and nothing works. What can I do? The tablet is an Ainol Aurora 8GB model running Essential Clean Rom 1.1a. I tried just to forget it and make due with using just the 1GB and my external SD card but when I try to download apps from the Amazon Market it says that there is no SD card (internal) and that I need it. I didn't try Google Play yet...
Update: when i go wipe the system in CWM it says no apps2sd partition found and something about /sdcard .android secure. Does that have anything to do with it?
Try another ROM basically one stock ROM and after try a custom ROM.When you flash the stock ROM use repartition.IMO that's all.I hope this solution work for you.
Tapatalk 2 send from GT-I9000
Thanks for that. I'll see if restoring the stock rom helps. I doubt it though. I've tried 2 different ones (not stock) and it didn't do anything at all...

Hi Andie00, did you ever come to solution to your problem, as I'm experiencing something very similar with CM 10.2 my internal storage just disappear and I can't see it. Otherwise ROM works very well and fast, don't wish to switch to CM 11 which is more buggy in other ways.
Problem gone when I make factory reset/data wipe it worked until next reboot of device.
---------- Post added at 09:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:25 PM ----------
UPDATE: I find something interesting, if I remove my external SD card physically from device and than reboot phone, Internal Storage return to where it should be, and if I insert external SD after this, it become available as well and phone see 2 internal storages and external SD card.
If reboot device, in Settings > Storage I see first Internal storage normally, second is blank and external SD is visible.
Any idea why it happens and how it can be fixed?
Problem seems to be solved
answering my own yesterday's question
posting this for anyone who facing similar problem, maybe my experience would be helpful for someone.
I've tried to insert different SD card and reboot with it, and after this my internal storage remained visible. so I plugged my sd card to PC, examined it and moved from it to safe place all files which shouldn't belong there. for example I find out external SD contain .android_secure folder with 1.6gb of remains of old programs, though I never installed them to external SD, also I removed folder Android which contain just empty folders without files.
After this boot with that flash was successful and I can see both internal storages and external SD, and now I can use CM 10.2 on my Samsung gt-i8160 which works blazing fast comparing to stock firmware, phone never was so responsive no matter what I did before!
Hope it can help someone.
I posted this in regards to an old Ainol tablet I had. My "solution" was to put back the stock rom.

[CLOSED]Format data/media (sdcard internal memory)

I apologize if this has been answered somewhere else here before. I have been searching for days and have not found the full answers to my questions anywhere.
Recently I updated my GT-P7510 CM9 to an experimental CM10 from by pershoot. After getting it up and running I was looking at my internal storage usage and numbers didn't seem to add up (must have done a dirty flash at some point in the past to cause this). My internal storage in root explorer showed 8.93gb in use and 28.01 total storage. I copied everything to a USB drive to back it up and noticed there was only 7.45gb actually on the internal storage. I have seen this problem before on my S2, and I always just reformat the internal SD card (emmc) to regain the missing space. However, since the tab does not have a micro SD slot, I have no way of wiping the internal sdcard (data/media) without wiping out the rom too from how I understand it. Somebody correct me if I am wrong...
So, does anybody know of a way to successfully wipe/format the sdcard (data/media directory) in CWM or other method that will not wipe out the rom and send the device straight to cwm with no way to install a new rom? Or do I have to revert back to stock to accomplish the format of sdcard like I have read for a few other similar situations? Everything works fine (CM10 & CM9 both run awesome), I just want that extra 1.48gb of missing/phantom storage back. And, without mass storage mode, I cannot perform a disk check in win7. This has really got me frustrated to find a solution without having to start over. I wish this tab had a micro SD slot!
Currently I am running CM9 nightlies (7-31) for p4wifi (gt-p7510). My cwm recovery is version 6.0.1.0. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I do apologize if this has been covered before. Thanks in advance to those of you smarter than I.

Ok, I seemed to have figured this one out and now feel pretty stupid for not digging a bit further before asking.
After I decided to go ahead with the sdcard format using CWM, I noticed that the space was still being used somewhere. After I started to dig a bit, I noticed that all of my apps still worked after the format. Basically, the extra space is being consumed by the /data/app folder housing all user apps. CWM must be designed to ignore this directory when formatting the internal sdcard which is why there was still some storage being used.
I feel like an ubernoob for asking this, but my S2's internal sdcard is not mapped to data/media, so I had to learn a bit better about how this thing works I suppose. Anyways, I hope this information can be useful to someone out there having similar questions.

Although that is a similar problem, I asked if there is a way to fix it without going that route? I appreciate your reply, but I already knew it could be resolved by going back to stock (2nd paragraph of my post).

I can accomplish a full format of the internal sdcard on my galaxy s2 without it affecting the rom in any way whatsoever and it is running cwm 6.0.1.0 also. From how I understand it, the partitions are set up differently on the s2 and this device. The s2 has a separate partition for the internal sdcard making it possible to format via cwm. On this device, the sdcard is part of the data partition meaning wiping it will leave you with no rom installed and no storage on the sdcard. I think all versions of cwm can wipe the slate clean, it is just a matter of everything else being wiped clean also. But, if you are aware of a cwm that let's me accomplish this, I would love to find it. Thanks again.

ext SD-card and JB 4.1.1

Hello everyone, new to these forums, but have been reading here for a few years now
I have a couple of questions regarding JB 4.1.1 and Galaxy S3 i-9300
First of all, I can't seem to make my external SD card work with anything else but Recovery/Root Explorer.
Gallery doesn't show it, VLC doesn't show it, and I can't find any settings that will allow me to save pictures taken by the cam onto extSD, nor videos.I have tried both AOSP and PA 4.1.1, same issue.
Second, when I flashed AOSP/PA 4.1.1, whenever I go into Gallery, and choose Settings, I just get a blank screen, no options, no nothing.
Am I just stupid, or have I formatted the card wrong?
best regards, Tim
Is is FAT32 ?
Are there any partitions (other than the primary) in the SD card? (or, have you repartitioned the sd card) ?
Thanks for the reply. I booted into CWM and formatted the card from there. It still doesn't show up. Will try to reflash JB again.

I am in the same situation. It started when clockworkmod couldn't read some of the files in the download folders (mods i intended to apply) which were visible in es file explorer. After a few tries, sdcard (a trascend 64gb uhs-1 which i indeed recommended a few hours ago in another thread!!!) looks dead both in android AND pc. Had to format to access it. Currently letting diskdigger do his job, then for more invasive action (still yet to figure).

The issue you are facing is what made me flash from AOKP to PA/AOSP in hope of improvement.
While I was running AOKP, I connected my Galaxy to my PC via USB, and in the external SD card, I found multiple copies of the same folder.
For example, I made a folder called PICS inside my SD card when I got it a couple of weeks back and everything was running smoothly. Then just a couple of days ago, I wanted to copy some of my pics, and now I had 5 folders called PICS on my SD, and none of them contained actual pictures, the files had no extensions whatsoever, just blank fileicons.
I'm considering moving back to a stock Sammy ROM, these external SD card issues are getting really frustrating.

i've got the same problem..i read somewhere it was to do with CWM recovery being used? i havent had time to investigate and cant mess with my phone as i'm going away tomorrow....i hope someone points out the solution as this has plagued me since day 1 with jelly bean..
So, formatting the card on pc as NTFS/standard allocation/FULL format (took about one hour and a half) worked for me. Cwm reads it and i made a couple of format to be sure. Weird thing is in settings/memory the ext-sdcard capacity/free space is correct, but there is no visual bar (it is there for internal sd). I'm pretty sure at this point the problem was probably caused by some action i took with mobileodin using files from the sdcard.

Internal SD card partition lost, help!

SOLVED - did a factory reset from inside CM9 and checked the box to format the sd card (god knows why this worked but the one in recovery didn't..also, why the hell didn't i think of this sooner? could have saved myself a week of searching)
while i was tinkering around trying to fix "mediaserver" (was killing my battery) i started to format my internal sd card memory (after backing it up)...for whatever reason i choose to do this via windows with the quick format off (wanted to scan for bad sectors and crap) then i forgot it was still running and unplugged my phone
novice mistake, i know.
anyhow, i've got adb up and running again, but i haven't been able to find a guide to fix it, or the info to bring up the partition tables, most sites give me specific commands to deal with the external card, but not ones to figure out how CM9\sgs2 is partitioned
ideally i'd like to just restore the partition, I do have backups if that's not possible though.
Phone is up and running fine minus that partition (which of course many apps rely on to store data, most don't have options to redirect it to my sd card.
any info on how CM9\sgs2 is partitioned or how to use ADB to find out would be greatly appreciated
Boot into your recovery and format your SD from within the recovery. That should fix it.

already tried that, the partition fails to mount, when i put my external sd card in the "sd card" partition mounts, but emmc doesn't (the sd card partition now being my external instead of my internal memory)
anyone even have a idea where i can find info on partitioning the internal memory? i've been searching as much as i can but i mostly only get link2sd pages, nothing on how to actually partition the internal memory
::edit:: i've made some progress, i've managed to install and operate parted via adb, but the version i have doesn't seem to support fat 32, i deleted then remade the partition but the phone still won't recognize it. cwm recovery is telling me "failed to mount /dev/block/mmcblk11 (invalid argument)" other pages seemed to imply that if i can get the partition to fat32 with a block size of 4096 it might work.
a factory reset from inside CM9 with the sd card format box checked did the trick, not sure why it took me a week of googling to figure that out :/ (wtb a facepalm emoticon)
"CM" you mean ?
CM = CyanogenMode?
CyanogenMod Kernel for Galaxy ?
"CyanogenMode" by installin from default ClockWorkMode? section of "Install ZIp from SD" ?
I need to re-partition Internal Memory too.
searched & found this your Topic.
would you please tell me what exactly has been done to fix re-partitioning internal memory?
maybe it can be so Important and Sticky.

it's been a while, but it wasn't lost, i just had to repartition it, i described how i did this a few posts up.
i'm quite happy with my samsung sgsII, i'm not familiar with some of the other devices but i haven't run into any issues i can blame samsung for.
CM9 is exactly what i said it was, cyanogenmod 9. it's a whole rom package, not just a kernal
