How smooth is it? - HTC Droid DNA

Hello guys a question about the performance of the phone
Is there any FRAMEDROP or STUTTERING when moving around the UI especialliy when OPENING and CLOSING APPS if you could can, can you close and open google maps and tell me if it lag or fps drop?
Being extremely OCD about android lag as i have return and sold various device such as the tab 10.1, NOTE 1, and the nexus 10 because the lagginess and stuttering when opening apps drove me CRAZY.
Now pardon me if i sound rude but can your eyes notice the difference between 30 fps and 60fps? I think a lot of people claiming that their device has no LAG simply cannot TELL what LAG even is and their eyes are untrained therefore wrongfully stating that their device is “smooth” all the time.

I do see lag in maps. No device is perfect, even my iphone 5 chugged sometimes.

Oh yea INSIDE of maps is fine idc about that im talking about when OPENING and CLOSING the map app.

There is pretty significant lag throughout the UI. The Nexus 4 w/ the same specs, minus Sense UI and the 1080p screen, is much smoother. The biggest issue for me in day to day use is scrolling left and right through GTalk sessions. It lags BAD. But that's the only thing that really bothers me at this point in my day to day use.
But the screen makes up for it.

Opening and closing apps is pretty darn smooth, especially once the apps are cached in the ram.

I dont notice any lag. But I use Nova Launcher prime and not Sense.
Very fast launcher.

Honestly I haven't seen this at all. Might be a device per device issue. I have no lag that I can tell. It's really smooth and responsive. Then again I've never used a Nexus 4 so maybe it's smoother. I still wouldn't use the word lag.

This topic would be again subjective just like "Hows the battery"
However, I have been an owner of these devices in past 3 months -
iPhone 5, iPad Mini, Xperia V, One X+, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Butterfly
A lag will almost always be present in all devices at some time or the other. However, I see where you are coming from. So to answer your question, NO, there is no lag.
I am using Virtuous ROM (even Stock ROM for the matter) with Power Saving On (for CPU) and the only times I have seen lag -
1. After reboot when you go one homescreen to another the widget needs to reload data atleast once.
2. When entering app tray after reboot or app install, it refreshes the app list.
In normal use and opening/closing apps, there is no lag and YES, I can differentiate between 30/60 fps. Example at hand, try scrolling contacts/tones in Whatsapp on a S3 and Butterfly/DNA

Thank you for this man really appreciate it, People on the nexus 10 forum was like NO NO LAG AT ALL!!! Lo and behold i bought it and about to return it after a week So you think the xperia z would be a pretty good bet for a lagless experience? Considering the hardware is similar.

Sense 4+ does have lag regardless what people say. It is there throughout phone UI. Be it settings, desktop or whatever.
However there is no unusual delay in opening or closing apps. And general performance is great in apps.
But if you are coming from Nexus 4, or Note 2, yeah this phone lacks that buttery smooth feel by default.
However with De-sensed Viper with LK kernel and Nova Launcher prime with fast animation = as close as it gets to Nexus 4 UI experience. It is significantly smoother to use. AOSP contacts is blazing fast as it should be.

Note 2 is buttery smooth ? ... Simple test ... Scroll a long list of items like ringtones on both Samsung phones and HTC side by side ... Let me know how it goes (actually don't since I have already played with them and know the answer)

Nope .. not perception ... Samsung has there own interpretation of project butter since there exynos code is not open source which is no where near what it should be ... I am not saying HTC is perfect, but its better butter .. lol

You can take my opinion with a grain of salt if you want to, but I am probably in the top tier of ocd people when it comes to ui lag or slowness. I simply won't put up with it.
I owned the DNA and now the Note 2. Don't let anyone here fool you, the DNA is quite sluggish in homescreen scrolling. To the point that it was one of the main reasons that I got rid of the phone.
There isn't really a ton of lag, although there is a little bit. But HTC for some reason chose to slow down the animations so the scrolling feels heavy. I absolutely hated it.
My personal opinion and conclusion is that they did it to mask how heavy Sense is. Because I had a Rezound and the animations on that phone were much faster but it was a complete lag and stutter fest.
And I always laugh at the people who brush it under the rug and just say to run Nova and you will be fine. If you are going to do that, why not buy a phone with better battery life and expandable storage? Because Nova will make any current gen android device run like butter. I personally buy a phone for the stock launcher and software that it has.
Either way, good luck with your decision!
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium

For some reason unknown to me and I think many devs Samsung doesnt utilize hardware rendering to the fullest and ends up with jerkiness in all apps ... Htc does and its very much apparent when scrolling in even 3rd party apps ... I think in the end you need to play with both phones for few minutes to see the difference and make a decision

Performance not as great as I expected

Hey all!! Recently purchased this wonderful phone, and am loving it. One thing that kind of bothers me is the performance. Certain games that I run on my OG Evo are crap, but on the new LTE, it's great. HOWEVER, it's not as great as I thought it would be. An example would be "Blood and Glory." My buddy has a SG2, and it's pretty smooth on that, but on my LTE, it doesn't seem as smooth, and gets choppy sometimes. Is it because Sense is bogging the system down?
Am I the only one with this problem? Or am I just being overly critical?
I'm rooted, and running Flex's Stock Rom + Ultimate dual cpu mod.
Any input would be much appreciated, because this is bothering me!
I would guess it's either a software fix they'll do soon or Sense, it seems to take a lot of processes/RAM, so it could be a culprit. Not sure, try a more barebones one and see how well it works compared. Could always nandroid back easily.

I think you're just paranoid...
Everyone that is a smarphone owner is always hypercritical of their new device when they first get it. I still have my OG Epic and occasionally play with ROMs with it because of the Hardware keyboard+gamergrip, and i realize how much smoother the EvoLTE is compared to a 2 year old device. Yes there are some times where i have many apps running and hit menu but sense has to restart, but all in all, it's a helluva lot faster phone than any device on the Sprint market as of now.
Give it some time and let the Devs do their thing. SG2 has been out for quite longer than the EvoLTE; they have many more optimizations and tweaks than we do.
I compared Tiny Tower on my Epic Touch to the EVO LTE and i think the Epic Touch is smoother.
But since they are different manufactures, different resolutions and densities its not a fair comparison. I just know in past devices when im comparing stuff, games seem to flow better on Sammy devices.
Overall im still happy with my EVO LTE. Cant wait for LTE to go live where im at.
No you are definitely not paranoid. The phone does lag a bit. I've noticed this after I use many apps or if I don't restart the phone for some time. I've tried a couple of different roms like Fresh, Viper and Charmeleon and they all have some UI lag after a while...I think we just have to wait for HTC to release an update for sense.
It's not a hardware issue. The app simply isn't optimized for our software. It's an issue for the app dev of a given app to figure out.
This phone handles 1080p content np, nova 3 without issue, and I have yet to feel it be anything but fast with apps/interface

This was one of my main reason with this phone right out the box. At first I thought of rooting right away and hoping the custom rom would have a much better handling to this UI lag but your post stated the oppisite.
Man I really love this phone but lag such as multitasking, games like Temple Run, and the ability to not play HD (720p or 1080p) directly from the browser in desktop mode is very frustrating to ME. I'm hoping a lot of this has to do with stinking Sense UI and not the S4 itself. If the S4 itself to blame then the Samsung GS3 will probably won't be silky smooth either right out the box.

Nah ah, try switching to 720p or 1080p on youtube video "DIRECTLY" from you browser (not youtube app) in desktop mode, then come back to me. Again, I don't know if it's this phone or the S4 inside this phone that struggling, cause that's the case the Samsung GS3 US variant won't be good either due to the same S4 being used.
I haven't noticed any lag but what does irritate me is the Damn multitasking. What's the point of opening more than 1 tab when 2 sec later you have to reload the whole tab all over again. I don't see how HTC dropped the ball on that one when the OG and 3D handled multitasking so perfectly
The LTEVO says hello!
Hmm I have no real lag issues but I also don't use many apps at all but the performance is solid just sense once again Boggs it down I think once the dev scene picks up many of these issues will go away I was almost convinced to get the s3 us ver but I love the look of this phone ..

Dunno if you've rooted or plan to, but I found out that it isn't a solely a memory issue, but more of one with the sense multitasking "app". If you run the Charmeleon ROM and switch to the native ICS switcher.. Your apps never do that refresh nonsense

Yeah, all of your guys concerns are what I've been thinking about too... I'm HOPING that HTC or app devs try to optimize software for our hardware with the programs that are out now...
I WAS expecting blazing speeds and crazy performance, but I haven't been "WOWED" yet.
Yeah, the Evo LTE just came out about a week ago, so I'm still giving it a chance.... 2 months TOPS!!!!!
If there aren't any improvements that REALLY "WOW" me, then I'll be really disappointed that I stayed loyal to HTC, instead of going with the SG3
If I defected over to Sammy it would only be for a nexus device but rumors are the next nexus is going to be made by multiple people... We will see how that works out or if its true.

[Q] SGS2 vs HTC One X

Hi,
I do know that's more or less an old topic but well...I have a big dilemma so maybe you should help me out.
I'm owning a SGS3 int. and well I'm more or less fine with it; I choosed it over HOX mainly because of chance to change battery and winner cpu/ram benchmark (with 15/20% more in every damn test) and a bigger screen (not much but better then nothing).
The dilemma started 1 week ago when a friend of mine bought the HOX and well...the screen seems really so much better in HOX.
At the same time, despite few games lag on HOX, the Tegra has some optimized game for it giving some cool effect.
I mainly use the phone to watch movie and play videogames so, in some way, HOX win for me so I was thinking to chance my SGS3 for an HOX but I wanted to ear your opinion, hoping that will not start flame or fan boy reply.
I am really interested in opnions of who maybe tried both or who maybe changed his HOX for the SGS3.
Thanks,
Max
I have both and personally I prefer the one x. It is laggier though as sense is quite bloated and if you want to run custom roms you need to unlock your boot loader with HTCDev which is you basically telling HTC you have voided your warranty. The screen on the one x is far better in my opinion and tegra optimised games look great. But there is a thread with One X vs SGS3 so you might want to look there.
Another this versus that thread....get the keys out, lock time
Sent from the asylum
I own a HOX with a clean ICS ROM and it hands down beats my friends SGS3. The screen is much prettier and performance is much the same if not better during games with nvidia's tegra 3. However the HOX with sense 4 is a little laggy. The ROM is 3-4 times bigger. It really depends if you're up for flashing a non-sense ROM to the HOX. If you are, I think that it's better. I think it looks nice too although that's really down to you. If you can't be bothered with that kind of thing, the S3 is probably a better bet.
Another thing to be aware of.. lots of ports of Jelly Bean are being developed as we speak. Both for the SGS3 and HOX phones. Project butter is going to make using them incredibly satisfying and smooth. We shall have to wait til after BETA testing to see how well they can really put down that quad core power with androids latest OS

Funny, I don't remember being told that XDA offered a personal shopper service when I registered. Pretty cool actually. This way I won't have to do any research or investigation of which device is right for me on my own. I can just let all the other XDA members do the heavy lifting for me.
No doubt HOX screen is better especially for watching movies. Since you like to watch movies on screen less than 5inc, then HOX suit you more.

Anyone experiencing lag?

I'm actually experiencing lag when moving around on a web page sometimes. Even texting with HTC keyboard. However, I downloaded the 2.2 keyboard and its better... Seems like screen accuracy is a little off sometimes too. Anyone experiencing this? With or without power saver off? Thanks.
99.9% of the time it's flawless. My iPhone 5 lags too.
So does my $2799 retina MBP.
It's fine if your One stutters every once in awhile. Relax. It's flawless most of the time. Blame every OS because they all do it occasionally.
And use the Google AOSP keyboard that was released yesterday. Bliss.
Only lag I've gotten period on this phone is when messing around with the HTC browser haha.
it`s necessary
I usually run on energy save mode. I have very little lag even with things running in that mode.
Everything is working like it should here, gotta understand this is a mobile device. There will be some issues, nothing to be alarmed about.

Coming from a Nexus 4 running ParanoidAndroid and Franco's kernel, the HTC One running stock ROM is a lag-fest!!!! I often have to wait a good second or two after touch the icon for the app to appear, and simple games like Bejeweled Blitz and Candy Crush Saga took forever to load. Temple Run 2 would occasionally stutter.
I was baffled!!! On paper this phone is supposed to be faster than the Nexus 4 -- could the 1080p display cause that much of a hit in performance? I even installed the Bulletproof to try improve things but only the battery life gets better.
Solution: I flashed Android Revolution HD 10.2 ---> the phone runs smoothly like butter now!
If you do that, you lose WiFi calling, correct?

I think it was something with 4.1.2. I used an app called Skout on the stock rom that came with the phone and the lag was unbearable, so much so i was going to return the phone, but now i have a dent in it so i'm stuck with it lol. I installed the 4.2.2 roms and the performance is way better, not Nexus 4 smooth, but definitely an improvement. I cannot wait until the GE HTC One is released and we have a solid stock Android rom that is supported, i don't mind stock, only bad thing is no remote control app and other things. I really hope 4.3 brings even more performance to Android, because these phones are way to powerful to have "noticeable" lag.

Unfortunately yes... I live in Seattle and T-Mobile's coverage here is rock-solid so I've never found myself needing that feature. It seems you just have to pick your poison.
But honestly, I'd pick great performance over Wifi calling anytime -- you'd always have to put up with constant mediocre performance in exchange for those occasions when you're in areas with spotty cell signal,

No lag, best android that I have
Had a Galaxy Note 2 which had 0 lag and "down graded" to a Galaxy S 4 which stutters way to often. I returned the Galaxy S 4 today and picked up a HTC One because I heard they fixed the back button which they did and it feels flawless compared to the Galaxy S 4. I prefer running on stock 99.9% of the time but on the Galaxy S 4 I was required to run the Google Edition rom to actually have a good experience with the phone.
So far with the first hour of owning the HTC One I learned the blink feed is actually useful because I rarely watch the news or read the paper. I can have all the news I want appear right in front of me.

Most people that don't notice the stutters haven't had a recent device. A flaw of always changing phones. Compared to the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5, the G3 lags, stutters and is just sluggish feeling overall. Doesn't mean it's a bad phone by any means, just isn't all the polished compared to the other phones released this year.
The lag on mine is predominantly when I open the app drawer and swipe. Other than that it's not bad imo. I came from the m8 and it is more fluid and polished, but I didn't care for sense or the phone in general

I just don't see the stutters and lags so many complain about. Okay, maybe in one area... opening the task switcher, if there's a bunch of stuff running might be called laggy, but apps open fine and run fine.

Agree with this, coming from the Note 3. Everything seems smoother except the recent apps/task switcher. I like the layout of it.. but it's just a bit slow. But even that is me nitpicking.

The UI stutter seems to be isolated to different devices. Mine is when I open the app drawer and swipe initially. Other than that I have zero lag or stutter. Also, switching the above to .5 does make your device a bit more speedy.

Out of curiosity, I switched to the stock launcher, and when I first opened the app drawer, there was like a one second delay before the app icons appeared. Same when going to widgets. A bit of stutter when flipping thru the drawer, as well. Interesting. Back to Nova, fast, smooth, zero lag / hesitation.
I came from an S4 running a SaberMod ROM and to me my G3 is snappy as hell. Took me a couple weeks to remove all the bloat and get it set up to my liking and now it's even snappier and Battery life is awesome too.
It's a great phone

There is lag in the messaging app, keyboard. Random delays opening and closing apps, home screen redraws, stutters when closing/switching apps. App drawer takes a second to open and another second to populate.
It's like that for a lot of people, fresh out the box. I understand a lot of people love the g3 and maybe you guys really don't see it, but it's there for most. There are a lot of people who are gonna just argue because they don't want to admit it, but maybe some phones are just better. It isn't as snappy as the s5 or m8 tho

There are a lot of people who are gonna just argue because they don't want to admit it, but maybe some phones are just better. It isn't as snappy as the s5 or m8 tho

I can't speak to the S5 or the M8, but I've run the G3 side-by-side with my Note 3 and S4, and it is considerably quicker than the S4 (not surprisingly), and marginally quicker than the Note 3. And, zero lag, hesitation, or stutter with any app, any drawer--none anywhere. Not sayin' some don't experience these issues, but I do not.

And it's not like that out of the box for many people...
I've got no axe to grind one way or the other, and I'm not in denial. You don't know what lag is unless you had a Samsung device a few years ago when they are still using RFS file system. I remember having to use symlink hacks pointing system files to the sdcard to prevent it.
I just quick searched YouTube and didn't see any standout videos that actually demonstrate this awful lag. It would be interesting to view a few.

Well, it's gonna be hard to capture lag on a youtube video, but there are some. I simply googled LG G3 Lag and had pages of reviews and switched to video and had pages of videos. Granted, some of them say things like "what lag", but there are enough there. As I said, maybe some of you guys don't see it, but more people would just rather not admit it. This phone is nice, but it's not polished. It's gonna happen when you do things first like QHD screens.
Trust me, I know exactly what lag is. I've been with Android a long time and have tried more than a few phones. I still have an old Hero here I like to fire up every so often just to remember what it was like to have bootloader freedom.

What phone did you come from previously?
Most people that don't notice the stutters haven't had a recent device. A flaw of always changing phones. Compared to the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5, the G3 lags, stutters and is just sluggish feeling overall. Doesn't mean it's a bad phone by any means, just isn't all the polished compared to the other phones released this year.

I change devices every 6 months or less. I had an s5 on launch day (which I returned in my 14 day window because I couldn't take the lag and egonomics), have used my wife's note 3 quite a bit, and had a g2 just before updating to the g3. I don't see the lag. It's not as smooth as an HTC device I will give you that (had the m7 as well) but it's SO much better than any samsung out right now. The lag on the s5 is ridiculous honestly. The note 3 really isn't any better.
I have no blinders on either. Because of how often I can change devices I am honestly looking for a reason. I didn't get lag on the stock launcher, but I have switched to Nova and find it to feel just a bit quicker.

Galaxy s6 edge scrolling lag in browser, facebook etc.

Guys... I've seen a few discussions about this, but the threads got closed.
I've had almost all of the galaxy S series (S3, S4 and now S6 edge)
I'm having lags and stutters while browsing some sites and even scrolling in Facebook, especially when going into Comments and looking at the replies of comments.
I'm absolutely mind boggled that when with these specs there are stutters and lags. I've also got the nexus 4,which doesn't have any issues at all.
I was having a hard time deciding between an iphone 6 (or 6S in fall) the Galaxy S6, but ultimately chose the S6, because I just couldn't justify paying that kind of money for outdated specs of 2 years ago. (Well I now have to admit specs are not everything)
I thought I wouldn't have to root my phone etc. because it'll run awesome out of the box, but that's not the case...
My galaxy S4 is almost running on par with the S6 though admittedly It's rooted and running an awesome custom rom.
I never used to care that much for micro lags and a bit of stutter, but you'd think they would have sorted it out by now with these monster specs and with this premium price now it always freaks me out if I see lags..
Otherwise it's really a beautiful phone with a mind blowing Camera. Though I still don't see the point why they went with such a high resolution for the display. ( if I take a picture on the S6 and send it to my s4 you can hardly spot a difference besides color accuracy and brightness, would rather have better battery with a lower res screen)
Anyone know a way to solve the scrolling problem? ( I tried 0.5 animation and factory reset to no avail)
Please don't shut down this thread like the other one, because it is a real issue!

After I obtained root, applied the unofficial memory bug fix, and installed a Debloated custom rom, the lag permanently disappeared. Consider doing as I did

Thanks for your response
And I'm sure it's possible to get rid of lag with root and debloating/custom roms. I had lots of fun doing all these things in the past, but now I just want a phone that just works out of the box. It's just frustrating, that with such specs, the premium price and it being 2015 you still have to do those things. And it's become a headache to always look for things that are draining your battery in standby and use stuff like greenify. And with "Powersaving location" apps polling way to often instead of giving them a certain timeframe to do so. (I think Sony did that with the stamina mode )
Well I guess that's the way it is. Maybe I should consider another phone after so many years of android.

The lag that occasionally occurs is solely due to the memory leak in lollipop and should be fixed officially in a future software update. Don't give your hopes up too quickly. Also, android is still better than ever on this phone.

I think it's more to do with the app quality and them not being optimized for specific phones. I mean they have to work on flagship phones as well as on budget 150$ phones. Well anyway let's just hope for the best... thanks anyway
And I saw somewhere that touchwiz 5.1.1 has a built in greenify :thumbup:

It can only get better from here.

I sent back my S6, because of some cosmetic problems and have to use the Nexus 4 to bridge the time it is back. Updated my S6 to 5.1.1. It was better, but still has RAM -issues and lags in the browser and especially Facebook app.
Using my Nexus again (admittedly with a custom rom) I have no scrolling lag at all. It´s so frustrating a 2,5 Year old device is faster at tasks than the spec-monster which is the Galaxy S6. #Sorryforrant

What rom did you install.
I hate that you have to resort to roms on these phones just to get them the work they way they should out of the box.
The lag is killing me but I love the phone itself.

I installed Extreme Syndicate. It was just updated a day and a half ago to V8. It is on the Verizon Android Developement subforum. It has the memory patch applied, has the Alliance framework installed, a custom boot animation, and has many system apps removed (but not as many as V5)
seriously, i hate this phone for so many reasons, but lag never occurred to me specially when browsing,
i am using boat browser Pro, never used any other browser, and every thing is smooth as my iphone 6 side by side.
