I have a strong feeling that there are some Apple employees or contractors spreading negative info about the Prime here at XDA. Wouldn't be hard for them to do and nearly impossible for us to detect. Just saying.
I think if the few main points they are pointing out turn out to be minor or overly exaggerated, (ie. Sound sucking, battery dying fast, price to high for the market, etc.), then it will be an iPad killer or come very close.
Note: Hate to use the "iKiller" phrase because apple has a place and a market regardless, but I digress.
Then I guess they're doing a bad job 'cause I'm still buying one!

That about says it all.
Up until the past few days everything put out about the Prime was PR from Asus. That and a few specific demos of games. As hands-on tests are released there's bound to be some negatives uncovered. It's not natural if there weren't. One could say that the fanboys aren't those seeking real-time feedback even if it's not positive but those that are blindly defending a product that's not even in the hands of conumers yet. And like someone said in another thread, there can be big differences from one review to another. The Galaxy Nexus was hailed as the second coming of Christ. Now that it's out it's clearly not perfect compared to the anticipation and PR. I for one want to get feedback from owners after they've used the Prime for a while. That's what XDA does best.

I couldn't agree more. I have been slightly disappointed to hear some of the negatives about the Prime; especially in the Anandtech review when compared to the ipad2. That doesn't mean that I'm not really excited about this product. I don't need it to be a Jesus-tablet. I would just like it to be a really nice high end Android device that i will enjoy using for a long time (relatively of course). So, I for one haven't cancelled my order. I also haven't seen any Apple fanboys on these threads yet. Of course, I did remove my tin foil helmet some time ago so that could have something to do with it too.

I am thinking of getting a prime for my wife. However the point that I find off putting is that the prime can only barely beat the IPAD2 in most tests and in some tests it fails compared to the Ipad2.
The Ipad2 is about a year old and the latest device and chipset that Nvidia and Asus can muster can only equal or barely beat it?.
really with the 11 month lead time the Prime should be kicking the Ipads ass, but it isn't.
I can only therefore gather that the Ipad3 whenever it is released would make the prime look like yesterdays tech just like the prime should have done but failed to do to the Ipad2.
I would love to be told that I am wrong and that infact the prime does indeed stomp all over the Ipad2?

which tests are you talking about exactly?
i would say most issues aside from hardware design issues stem from honeycomb and how crappy that version of android is as far as optimization and design goes.
hopefully ICS will fix a lot of the really big issues that HC has yet to even address.

IMHO, the point of the Transformer Prime is all about the *convenience*. For example, no one buys a MBA for its speed; even a $600 laptop would be faster.
The Transformer doesn't have to be better than the iPad or an ultrabook/MBA. But when you're on the road or wherever, carrying the Transformer will be heckuva lot more convenient than carrying both the iPad and MBA.
The whole is more than the some of its part. That's why the original Transformer has won awards such as tablet of the year, laptop of the year and device of the year!

these are my thoughts as well, it makes me really uneasy about buying this thing.

I'm usually first in line for new and shiny tech. For a second-gen tablet, I'm going to wait a bit. Here's my thinking: 1) I want to see what people's real experiences are with Teg 3, 2) I want to see what the performance difference is with ICS irrespective of h/w, and 3) Acer, Lenovo, and HTC have all announced quad-cores with more RAM (2GB) and higher res (1920 x 1152) displays which are probably going to become the new standard for high-end tablets. Qualcomm, TI, and Samsung are all working on next-gen chipsets too. For those with short memory, Nvidia was the worst of the dual-cores (except for gaming) and unless something's changed it probably pays to wait and see what the other chip makers come up with. Also getting a tablet launched with and optimized for ICS is preferable to a future update.
If you need a tablet right away, and don't currently have one, it makes sense to go with the Prime. If you have a first-gen tablet more choices are going to be available by Q1. And after reading the Amazon cancellation thread and some of the problems being reported by reviewers it seems that Asus is really rushing this puppy out in order to be first to market. Historically, that's never been good.

I think that is an astute observation. i don't have a tablet yet and now is the right time to buy for me. If I could find the original TF at a deeply discounted price I think I would probably go that route for now. As is, I guess I will stick with the prime. It is after-all a beautiful device with a lot of upsides at least.

Transformers, Iconias, Thrives, and K1s have popped up for as low as $250 NIB for the holidays. If you get one, it would be a great transitional tablet until you have more choices for second-gen tablets available. You could probably turn around and sell it for close to what you paid via eBay or Craigslist after using it for a few months. But I totally agree that if you're paying retail the Prime is the best of what's out now.

Man... those hot august nights, gave way to a cool fall breeze. Man, remember that? Yeah man... I feel like it was just yesterday. Just yesterday that I was checking out the devices featured at IFA, just yesterday when I saw this beauty. I headed over to the micro site samsung had created and watched that video. Sheesh, hard to imagine its been so many months. I had almost given up hope on seeing this beast, everyone said it wouldn't be coming to the US. I'm glad they were wrong.
Just wanted to share this precious moment with you guys.
Months after, I saw it at CES. It felt great in my hand, and I was really excited about when it would release. I didn't sadly get my caricuture from the booth, I was too busy using the phone. Can you believe all the SPens were gone when I went to check them out? How awful. Still it was a NOTEworthy experience. I absolutely loved it.
Fastforward to Feb. 5, and I preordered. HURRAY. What a long journey awaiting a phone.
Speaking of the GNOTE... I'm worried about my Best Buy preorder. Presidents day is Monday, and being the cheapo I am, I took the free shipping. That means if they use USPS (which they said they might), I'll have to wait until at least Wednesday, if I'm at home at the time of delivery. What a bunch of crap.
Well the wait is almost over. I'll be upgrading from an iPhone 4 (yay) after having an iPhone for close to 4 years now!

Yeah, I can't wait! After my iphone 4, I almost switched to a dell streak because my iphone was frustrating me. I got my device switched and everything was fine. Then the atrix released and I talked to an At&t rep and almost switched again, but I decide to wait.
I'm glad the wait was worth it,now I get the GNOTE

Nothing wrong with liking iOS/preferring it to Android (though you're right to be afraid of people flaming you for stating such an opinion here ); both platforms have their advantages and I know lots of computer geeks who still prefer to use iOS over Android. Personally, my issue is with people who have the "cult of Apple" mentality and trash Android without any firsthand knowledge of the platform. I'm actually pretty surprised you went with an iconia over an iPad--if I were going to buy a 10" tablet it'd probably be Apple despite iTunes, just because of the general mess I've found Honeycomb and Android tablet apps to be, though of course I say this as an owner of zero tablets of any kind, so I guess I'm glad your Iconia's working out enough to bring you in on the phone front. Always good to have new blood in here, in my opinion.

Never happen. Personally, I'd be surprised if the iPhone 5 has much over a 4" screen. There is no denying that the Note's size makes it a niche product, and there is no reason to believe that Apple's model for releasing a single iPhone at a time will change.

This exactly, I highly doubt they would. Considering Steve Jobs on multiple occasions bashed Android going for higher and higher screen sizes, I don't see his wants being trampeled on so quickly either. iPhone's will most likely stay at 3.5" for a long time.

Buddy, you have no idea how much I agree with you about all this. I like both platforms, all for different reasons. I'd truly like MEEGO to have been popular, true Open source and extremely powerful linux distro had it any real dev support. Intel and Nokia were supporting it, there was hope. But that died with the N9, oh well.
Too many apple sheeple are out there, it just disturbs me. Back when there was donut and cupcake I understand. There were limited number of devices and they had problems, and the iphone 3G was one heck of a phone. I used to argue day and night with my best friend's with his G1 back in high school. But ever since 2.2 and the SGS and especially now, its almost silly to hate on android. Its a fantastic OS!
And I regret not getting an iPad a lot. I actually wanted the Asus TF101, and waited on release date. Little did I know Asus had supply issues, and barely had an initial supply for release day. It took 2 months for supply chain problems to get fixed. I got bored, and bought an Acer Iconia the next week.
I HATED HONEYCOMB SINCE 3.0.0! IT WAS AWFUL. Buggy as hell. But after many months, overclocking, Taboonay 2.1 Rom and 3.2, it is much better. Still a great device for content consumption such as netflix and youtube, which is all I use it for now. Browsing is still pretty slow. Dolphin's good, Firefox pisses me off by not having flash. Overall I like Opera even if its sunspider is not the best, it is fast! The build quality of the iconia is laughable. Fully aluminum construction my behind! IT feels like its made of plastic and will fall apart anyday. The camera cover (a common problem) just fell off within a month. I found out a cheap piece of tape was holding it together, a true testament to the quality of Acer. Garbage tablet. Garbage tablet OS.
I'm really excited about gingerbread though and ICS. my pops has an Epic 4G touch and its a great phone. ICS I had a terrible time with on the nexus at a VZW store, but that was before people knew to force gpu rendering. I like ICS for the most part, its fast and smooth, but it borrowed a ton from HC (expected) and eh..... I like gingerbread a lot, lets leave it at that.

Right, and when the iPhone finally gets a screen size upgrade all these trolls will talk about how great the new size is, how it doesn't feel bulking with little baby hands, how it's not at all awkward to hold up against your head. Christ, they probably shoot a premature load when they find out their new 8" tablet makes phone calls.
I'm currently an iPhone user. Have been since the day they came out, but that will be changing once FedEx knocks on my door on Friday (tomorrow would be even better). I have always loved my iPhone. It has been nearly perfect for what I've needed it to do except in one specific area: Screen size. Sure, I could have made the jump to a 4.x" Android phone but there weren't any phones of that size that I was interested in, and with the push to 4G/LTE there were even less Android devices I was personally felt were captivating to me. What really pushed my decision to leave the iPhone was the release (or the announcement I should say) of the iPhone 4s. Wow! What a disappointment. I didn't find the move from the 3g to the 3gs to be all that spectacular and I certainly wasn't overly awestruck by Siri. Sure, there was some increase in performance but there were no improvements in the area where I wanted it, the screen size. 5.3' is big. There is no doubt about that, but I have big hands, and as much as I've enjoyed each and every iPhone I've ever owned I have always had a problem fumbling around with the virtual keyboard, even when in landscape. My kids on the other hand, they love their iPhones. They use the crap out of them for what they do, and they love Siri. And you know what, that's fine too...
I can't stand how 99% of the reviews for other phone find need to even mention the iPhone. Review the phone your reviewing and stop swinging from apple's nut sack like Tarzan its pathetic to say the least...

I'm so frakin sick of apple. I hate the way they do business I hate the way they make phones. And yes I have owned plenty of Apple products. Apple treats the world like poo by trying to hold every patent available and trying to sue and banish anyone that even tries to do something with mobile phones. Frak u apple. Just Frak u. It's funny how in this piece Farjad writes that "When you go back to a normal phone after using something so large, you wonder what on earth you were thinking." While Engadget says "After a few hours with the Note you'll very quickly become accustomed to the size, and once you have you won't want to go back."
I don't see how he can justify that the utility of a phone diminishes as it's screen size increases. So long as it is pocketable, and increase in screen size will always increase utility. More screen real estate means more room for your fingers, more room for enjoying media, less zooming, and much less eye strain. I absolutely despise anybody that brags about the fackin 'retina display'. At 3.5", holding the phone a foot away or more makes small text unreadable anyways. Yes, our ppi is slightly lower at 285 I believe, but hell, you can at least read text from a foot away. Also, if you move an iphone close enoygh to make the screen appear the same size as the note, or the note far enough away to seem the same size as the iphone, guess what? The note has higher resolution. Bam. Some people are just too stupid and ignorant to accept the fact that the note destroys the need to carry a phone and a tablet. Yes, readability on an iPad is probably easier with the large display, but it's still an extra device that you have to carry, and it really cannot be held comfortably for extended periods of time anyways due to its weight to size ratio. The note will have a great weight to size ratio, making enjoying media for extended periods of time rival that of the lightweight kindles and nooks. Plus it makes calls. It's sad when people are so loyal to a brand that they fail to realize that other brands make superior products. I would take my current infuse or my old cappy over an iPhone any day of the week. And my old cappy is two years old.
The other thing that apple lovers fail to realize is that fragmentation isn't a completely bad thing. It gives you options. You have phones from the size of the HTC aria or xperia mini all the way up to the infuse, galaxy nexus and note, and everywhere in between. You can choose the device that suits your needs best, and aren't locked to a single size, incrementally update phone.
Also, I hate when apple fans bash the rate that new android phones are released. That hate is fackin stupid. It allows you to get the latest and greatest smartphone whenever you are available to upgrade, not just once a year. It also promotes competition that has driven the quality and technology of android devices at an unbelievable pace. Yes, your phone will not be the latest and greatest shortly after you purchase it, but you still have a top of the line phone that is every bit as good, if not better in my opinion, than an iPhone. Fragmentation pushes manufacturers to try new things that will bring great phones to the market much faster than one phone per year. I guarantee that if apple made multiple versions and screen sizes of the iPhone that their market share would not increase. Instead, they would have fewer people per each device, with roughly the same number of people.
People like having choices, and until apple realizes that, iOS will forever be behind android.

Once I got my HTC Advantage 5 years ago, I knew I would never go back to a "normal" phone. I have always loved having a 5" screen. THAT is normal.

Constant mention of it is probably the only thing that keeps the iPhone relevant (in any way that it is). Is apple paying all these people!? Jeebus! iPhone is crap compared to even my 2yr old Evo 4g. And I've got ICS on my Evo lol. Would apple ever ALLOW THAT? Hell NO.

While I agree that it is stupid for so many reviewers to talk about the iPhone, that is not "the only thing that keeps the iPhone relevant." Millions of people have and will continue to buy iPhones even if new Android phones are not compared to the iPhone in reviews. The reasons the iPhone is popular are legion, from people who are clueless, to Apple cultists, to people who legitimately prefer the feel of iOS to other mobile options. The clueless people are the only people who might be influenced by lack of iPhone mention in reviews, but I sincerely doubt that many of them have ever read a review of Android device online.

Does it count if I'm a fandroid who's using iphone and is in an apple environment where I'm typing this from an ipad 3 and have access to numerous apple products and actually see out of the box?

When answering friends/family asking me which phone they should buy (I'm the phone advice guy) I always think: How interested is this person in tech such as computers and phones? How much do they know about tech? If the person is pretty uninterested and/or simply not a "settings/theme tweaker" kind of person, my answer is always and without fail the iPhone.
If the person is at least somewhat aware of new tech gadgets and has some rudimentary knowledge about phones, then things get more interesting.
I've had an iPhone4 myself for 11 months, and I did enjoy it. It worked very well, everything from GPS to basic phone stuff worked very well. I never had any problems, and I really felt I could trust in the phone to work when I suddenly needed quick GPS aid or something else. It never failed me.
The iPhone IS a good device, especially if you're more of a "set it and forget it" kind of person.
Me, I started to miss the customization options that Android offers, and the iPhone's tiny display was starting to annoy me. (Because of its size, other than that I loved the display.)
AND another big reason is the video series that I already mentioned earlier. Really opened my eyes. iOS is falling behind. Badly. Although not everyone cares about that. Those who do care should be sporting an Android.

I am making the switch from the 4S to the S3. I have switched between all kinds of phones, currently back in forth between my Thunderbolt and 4S when I want to switch it up. However, the S3 just seems like it's ready to blow me away, where iOS is getting a bit stale to me.

I'm also the phone advice guy and I have the exact same thought process when considering what I think they should get.
It's really easy to overestimate how limited most people's tech knowledge is and I'm no guru.

you forgot one point. a common belief held by typical users is that having an iPhone is cool an shows that you're classy and rich whereas android is for nerds and cheapsakes. they're too full of themselves to realize the different between being smart and efficient conpared to ignorant and foolish

I remember my boss saw me playing with my brand new galaxy and said "lol, not everyone can have an iphone." i really wanted to bury my foot in his face, he had the damn 3GS! My phone would make the 3GS commit suicide just by looking at it! That is how most nontech folks see this.. Don't get me wrong on this, I'm no iphone hater but I'm beginning to feel some frustration against some users xD

I went from the Samsung Galaxy S2 to the iPhone 4s to the Xperia S to the HTC One XL. I am going to switch to the Galaxy S3 as soon as I find a good deal on an international one or as soon as it comes out for Rogers.
Although I didn't really have many complaints about the iPhone 4s after an iTunes restore. Here are my main problems with it.
It was the first to use bluetooth 4.0 but it sucks. The range is very poor and disconnects too easily compared to BT 3.0. To be fair, this also happens on my One X. I don't think BT 4.0 is ready for prime time yet and the battery saving is not worth it yet. I am not expecting the GS3 BT 4.0 to have the same range as the GS2 and Xperia S BT 2.1 but it will be better than the iPhone 4s BT 4.0 similar to how BT 4.0 is better on the HTC One X.
Here is the main reason I got rid of it though. EVERYBODY in my region has either the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s. It is like if everyone had your favorite jacket. I would stop wearing it and it wouldn't be my favorite anymore. Also similar to how uniforms make you look like part of a hive, an iPhone 4s makes you look like you are assimilated into some massive cult. It might be a shallow reason and might not bug everyone, but it REALLY bugs me. I like to have some individuality.
You can also tell them that the Xperia S is basically a nicer and classier looking version of the iPhone 4s. It performs just as well down to the keyboard. Not to mention it offers more freedom to boot.
However, I would choose the 4s over the HTC One X and all my other phones before the GS2.

It just works and doesn't bother me during use. I am very picky about fluidity and user interface.
A few years ago the thing that I liked about the iPhone was easy music syncing (I actually quite like using iTunes believe it or not), a good music player (continuous playback etc), good screen, and it was pretty consistent.
I felt Android had the potential but maybe the hardware needed to improve to accommodate the great features. The 'oh but the iPhone just works' argument maybe had some substance back then.
Now the hardware has accelerated so much and the developers have really started to fine tune the software, that argument just doesn't hold up.
Plus, now I've finally discovered programmes like PowerAmp and iSyncr that fill the music gap, I can have a decent amount of storage without being extorted, a nice big screen and I don't have to have the same phone every other person has.
For me, you just can't compare the iPhone to the current high end Android devices. The Apple fanboys might make a case when comparing it to the lower end devices but £ for £ Android is way ahead in my book.
Was playing with my father in law's 4S today. I don't know how anyone can say it's more "intuitive" or user friendly than android. I'm sure if you are used to iOS it feels like it, but it took me 20 minutes to figure how to turn off his email ding that drives him nuts from all his spam because obviously he barely knows how to do anything other than make phone calls and read email. Also wanted to make it so when you delete emails it ALSO deletes it from the server. Still haven't found a way to do it with his hotmail account, as he complained about having to delete all his junk mail twice. "Just works" my ass. I guess as long as you don't mind having it work like Apples wants you to.

I am not saying Android isn't better than IOS. I agree it is. My One X however, just doesn't do it for me. It stutters and lags more than my iPhone 4s did. The BT also didn't work until a factory reset on the One X and even when it did it would disconnect during a conversation.
Also, my screen flexed until I popped it back in by putting a case on and the only way I can get it to run smooth is with Sslauncher. Sorry, my HTC One X sucks and my iPhone 4s didn't.
I like all my other Android phones over the iPhone 4s though even though one of them used a last gen Qualcomm S3.

That's not really a good comparison. As it takes way more steps to change notification sounds in Androids email client.
All of this is totally biased. You're frequenting a forum that caters to the very people more likely to use android, regardless of what they had before. I think xda is more about the type of person than the tech they use, because most people who enjoy using their tech a specific way find xda like a beacon. Those that don't never bother, and that's the majority of people, with or without Android. The fact of the matter is whatever phone you think will make your life better, that's what you should get. Not everyone has a need for rooting, nfc, etc. Some people have dishwashers, but I get along fine washing it like a normal jackoff (even though I have a dishwasher). I'm also the same guy that flashes every other week. Not all tech is for everyone.

So I love my nexus ten, but I do not understand what google is trying to pull here. They make it almost impossible first to track down one of these things down. Then they do little to no advertising so the only ppl that really know about the nexus line are tech geeks while the average consumer is bombarded with iPad ads on every street corner. Then on top of that they release not even one official accessory for it!! No case, no smart cover, nothing OEM, pathetic! Go to an apple store and see all the junk you can get for it. Also look at the nexus 7 dock..... so they are going to release it a year after the product drops and is obsolete by then? Its like Google is just like OK lets make an awesome tablet for fun but screw anyone actually trying to live or own one!!!

I completely agree. I absolutely love my Nexus 10 tablet, and the more I use it and the more reviews I read the more I'm assured that it's just as good as the iPad 4. Yet no one other than tech geeks have even heard of it. Google ONLY makes it available on the Playstore, gives ZERO indication of what retail stores will be carrying it and when, displays NO advertising on TV or otherwise, and releases no accessories.
It's really disappointing. It has the specs to succeed. It has the OS to succeed. It has the screen to succeed. It has the name brand to succeed. All it needs is some proper marketing and to provide some availability and it will be a huge success. Judging by the fact that it's sold out on the Play Store, and that every time a few show up at a Wal Mart they're immediately picked up tells me that there's a very high demand and that people want it. Maybe Google is laying a bit low right now because they can't come anywhere close to having enough stock if the demand went up considerably right now? I don't know.

I think your final statement is quite valid. They needed to launch to take some attention from the launch of the ipad mini but weren't really in a position to do so, stock wise. I also wonder wether they are trying to avoid upsetting other OEM that use android that also want to sell tablets this christmas.
This is the first Nexus line that is actually this in demand and desirable to the masses. Previous Nexus launches has very little to offer to those wanting anything other than pure android experience. This time it is coming with top of the line spec and hardware and software to match that hardware and it exploded in the market.
Google didnt predict this, neither did lot of us. Lot of us did not expect that this product will be in such a demand that it will be hard to get one. Frankly the top of the line 32GB model has not been hard to get. I ordered 3 and got all 3 within a week of order even when they estimated anything from 2 to 4 weeks as waiting time.
Google will learn from this. And the success of this line actually gives google incentive to go all out on a big launch next time around. So overall, this is good for those who swear by nexus. Maybe it will be mainstream launch next time around thanks to the success of this lineup.

I think the main aim of the Nexus 10 was to get an excellent next-gen 10 inch tablet into the hands of developers to create and update apps. They didn't push hard on the marketing because many average customers might have been disappointed by the app selection (eg Facebook, Twitter and Spotify are all borked at the moment). Apparently Key Lime Pie is focussing heavily on tablets (with all kinds of rumours around multiple apps and Chrome OS integration flying round) and with its release Google might push the Nexus 10 harder. I think the Note 10.1 II, with a Nexus 10 screen + digitiser/s-pen + expandable storage will go gangbusters and the rest of the 10 Android market will follow.
I don't think Google intended for this to be anything more than a developer reference tablet and a toy for loyal Android geeks. They're trying to gently establish a new footing in the way of optimised apps for ten inch tablets. There are hardly any apps that have been optimised for the kind of screen resolution that Android tablets will need to veer towards in order to take on the iPad. There are hardly any 10 inch tablet UIs either. You can get away with normal Android apps on the Nexus 7 but not on a ten inch tablet. Google probably didn't think the Nexus 10 was ready for a mainstream heavily marketed push, but felt that the ground work needed to be initiated in this manner. We are the guinea pigs they needed!
Once that's been achieved, Google will probably push the next Nexus 10 like they pushed the Nexus 7.
Doesn't really explain then why they would choose to offer it at Walmart, king of the mass retail chains. I agree, this launch was half-assed.

Google have pumped money into marketing Gmail, Google+, Chrome, the Chromebook and the Nexus 7. If Google felt it was currently worthwhile to push the Nexus 10 to that extent, they would have done. Maybe when the Android platform has a more respectable 10 inch ecosystem their strategy will evolve.
One thing I've noticed about sites like XDA and Android fan sites is that these communities mistakenly think their interests represent anything more than the whispering voice of an extreme minority.
I mean, why sell a developer reference device at Walmart of all places, lol.. Frys or Microcenter would be a better choice for that. By selling at Walmart, they must be going for the general public, at least somewhat. I think they are still testing the waters in terms of how to market the device.
In my country (Germany) you can't even buy a N10, mo matter which size.
So if you have a N10, calm down, buy a non-OEM case and be happy
The launch, doesnt matter for developers or not, was a complete fail. You cant hype up and then release a batch of lets say 5000 devices in a 100 million population country. In Germany, the tablet was sold out in 15 minutes. I really wanted to order it, but all im getting is frustration and anger with the Play Store. Since i wanted to have a tablet for christmas, i guess ill settle with something else (maybe even the ipad, although im an android fan), what Google is doing is just a f-in miserable failure of marketing, sales and customer service.
This would be a dev device if it wouldve costed 600 bucks, promicing cheaper versions coming up in the next 2-3 months. But releasing such a device for 400 bucks and expecting very low interest is just idiotic... Im so disappointed with Google that i cant even describe it.
I agree, i wouldn't have known about the nexus 10 if my friend didn't tell me about it (he is very big into android) as to me, i'm really new to android and this will be the first android device i will own. I used iPhones, iPads but i got to bored with there interface. (you can only do so much even with a jailbroken device) I wanted to try something different and always wanted an android, so this tablet was a wake up call to switch over. Now im currently waiting the arrival of my nexus 10, I already love it from everything i read and cant wait to get it in my hands!!
Nexus isn't your typical retail ware. It's a collaboration between Google and the OEM, but because the pricing is lower than the OEM's own products, the OEM isn't pushing it. No promotion, and no accessories. It's up to Goog to do promotion and distribution, but Goog isn't putting much effort into either. I've seen ads for N7, but none for N10 or N4.
Distribution is mostly limited to Goog Play for N10. The handfuls of $499 SKU that make it into Walmart aren't competitive against iPads (Walmart is selling iPad3 for $399). In short, N10 and N4 are mainly reference devices, and for hardcore Android fans. They're not mass-market wares.
This may be intentional, since may be the intent is for OEMs to follow-up with comparable retail products, once they see how successful the reference devices are. N7 was a hit, and I'm pretty sure we'll see Asus & Co follow-up with similar 7" at similar pricing this year. Likewise, lower-tier vendors may see demand for N4 as a template to do similar handsets.
N10 (more generally, 10" tabs) will be a harder sell for OEMs to bite on. I doubt it will have any impact at all on overall Android tablet sales. It would've been better had Goog followed the KFHD/Nook model and came out with a $300 1080p tablet. On the bright side, at least it didn't bomb like the Nexus Q-ball.
iPad Mini will be the runaway hit this Christmas, eclipsing the iPad. It has the right blend of size, portability, and price. And it's perfect for kids and those with small hands. Its 4:3 screen allows for a much more usable display than the N7, which sucked for portrait. I'm hoping OEMs will pick up that cue as well and market some Mini-clone, at least in form factor.
The one good news for Android tablets is that Windows tablets/hybrids have bombed so spectacularly. Hopefully this will get major vendors to give Android tabs a second try, after the 2011 fiasco.

No promotion, and no accessories. It's up to Goog to do promotion and distribution, but Goog isn't putting much effort into either. I've seen ads for N7, but none for N10 or N4.
Distribution is mostly limited to Goog Play for N10. The handfuls of $499 SKU that make it into Walmart aren't competitive against iPads (Walmart is selling iPad3 for $399). In short, N10 and N4 are mainly reference devices, and for hardcore Android fans. They're not mass-market wares.

I finally saw a commerical ad for the N10 along with N4! It was about a week or so ago but that was it.
Edit: Here is the commercial I saw on TV. YouTube had it.
