[Q] Is it realistic to hope for Ubuntu/Android dual boot on Gnex? - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it reasonable to be hopeful that I will be able to dual boot with Ubuntu or Android on my Galaxy Nexus, just like I can on my laptop between 12.04 & Windows 7? Is this even possible on a phone? Thanks in advance

Depending on how the Ubuntu.img works.
If its anything like the nexus 7 it will repartition the gnex and could make dual booting difficult.
But its still possible. Why don't we wait until its released firstv
Slithered from my HTC One X+

i think it might work for do the dual boots on some phone. remembering that android sources come from unix/linux CMIIW

Its possible to multi boot Ubuntu and android on nexus 7, thus if given enough time and effort someone can port multirom from nexus 7 to galaxy nexus for dual boot magic

Honestly, it'd be easy if you just partition the external SD up real nice and... Nvm.

Ubuntu Phone OS for Galaxy S2?

Hello fellow members of xda.
Today i've came across with the launching of Ubuntu Phone OS, which in my opinion will revolutionize the world of Smarth phones.
My question is, will Ubuntu Phone OS be available for Samsung Galaxy S2 ? Or will be there some compatibility issues?
Best regards,
Rui Duarte
It was just demoed and i believe that not even the sources are out, so it's hard to tell if it will run or not, but according to this an 1Ghz Cortex A9 cpu and 512mb of RAM is the minimum requeriment... so it might be possible...
in my opinion android and ios will having a hard time when its fully released
Will be released on 2014.who knows what goodies key lime pie will bring till then.i dont see it as a threat for android

It'll be released for Galaxy nexus b/w 8th to 12th January ^^
2014 is when it'll start shipping with phones as a standalone OS.

Watch from around ~3 when they introduce OS. It's frigging amazing, finally some innovation and competition to Android.

Where did you read this? I just read about the OS not when it's ported to android.
I've read that they will release Ubuntu full image in few days or week. Here it is;
Given that Ubuntu is open source, a full Ubuntu image that can run on a Galaxy Nexus will be available within a few days or weeks.
I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu OS, but in my opinion Android will not be overwhelmed by Ubuntu Phone. With that unity like menu on the left side it's smell like windows phone on Samsung Omnia )

It isn't exactly " ported to android" there will be official Ubuntu image for gnex.

I'm really excited about this, even considering getting a nexus.

Btw, I'm sure that it can be ported to our sgs2, because the first full image will be for galaxy nexus and it would be easy to port it, imo.

I'm no developer mate, but have learnt a lot, got a lot of developer friends
Edit: Again, its open source os like android. We'll need sources to run it, reverse engineering worked for 4.2.1 but it is still broken. Porting that stuff to another os will be a nightmare.
Edit 2: I might be wrong and would love to be wrong

When you install a new OS on your PC, does your GPU work without drivers? GNex has omap which is open source. Any other phone with Qualcomm/Omap chip set can have it but not us.

Ubuntu rom?

Is there any that we'll see Ubuntu custom roms? Or will i have to buy an Ubuntu Phone in order to experience it?
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2
Chances are quite high that we will. Also IIRC Ubuntu said that they will be making their OS compatible with many popular Android devices, so an official Ubuntu ROM can be flashed instead of an Android ROM.

It's possible to see an Ubuntu ROM.
Also they said that they will release an Emulator & SDK for Ubuntu Phone Development until next week, so there is a big chance to see an official ROM released soon....

Sounds Awesome! A smart move by them would be to somehow make android apps compatible with it cuz it will take them a looooong time to get to the amount of apps android already has (if it ever will)...

Im pretty sure you can get android apps to work in ubuntu if you use multiarch.
Ubuntu OS is meant to run on Android (multi-core devices) only I believe. So if you meet this requirement you will get this They also mentioned that other flavors of linux will be released. (Not supported by Ubuntu however)

If you are satisfied with running Ubuntu in parallel with Android, you can always make an Ubuntu ROM yourself, following my HOWTO in my signature.
Good assumption

i think it will need a couple of weeks untill ubuntu "custom roms" will be portet to non nexus devices, because teh only devices that r officially supportet by ubuntu phone are the nexus 4 and the galaxy nexus.
You should know that Ubuntu Phone needs high resources to run on any devices.
There r few Devs at the moment that know how to port this on any device, and most of this r the devs of Ubuntu itself.
I would not name Ubuntu Phone a custom rom because it's not based on Android => it's a mobile OS based on linux but not on android
The first UbuntuPhones will be selled much later there are no at the moment

Ubuntu on nexus 10?

Has anyone tried using the install instructions as a guide for installing Ubuntu on the nexus 10? If so, how much work will it take to get a bootable Ubuntu on our device? Ubuntu definitely supports our CPU, as it is on a Samsung chromebook that has the same processor. Sorry to junk up the forums, but I'd really like some info on the possibility of this happening.
EDIT: they also share the same quad core GPU. I really don't see why Ubuntu won't run on this out of the box...

I believe there are a few devs looking into it at the moment. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012294
I've seen this. It seems no one has updated in a while, so I was assuming it was forgotten.
I was also thinking maybe chrubuntu would be the logical place to start, because that is an alpha that is working already on the chromebook.

I have Htc Desire, it will be possible to run Ubuntu on my sweet phone? Or it is possible only for new phones? What is a must have for system? CPU, Ram, storage. Thx for answer.

What's the actual point of having another linux distribution on your phone? Shouldn't it be the same (I'm not talking about few additional features that might be somewhat useful)?

Is like why some ppl prefer Linux Mint or Ubuntu or even Debian if all come from the same way? It's just matter of tastes.
What do I need to do to boot this bad boy on my jewel?
(Will you be copying all the questions and answers and adding them to the first post? )
Will dev devices be available? Will steam be officially supported for mobile?
What I'm curious about is will this support ext3/ext4 filesystems? Support for links?
Also, will there be a repo? Ability to install the gcc toolchain?
I'm curious on how unlock security. Like having a password to unlock or something like that. What would it look like on this OS? Another question I have is what are the keyboard's features?

Will it support (in the future) the Android app ecosystem?
I really hope so because people like me already purchased a lot of app and I need them (and won't buy them again).
What do you think?
Is this Q&A just aimed at the community or will it have some "official" answers ? If so what mobile networks will be used in the UK on release ?
Dual booting a possibility on the Nexus ?
Secure market for purchasing apps /devices?
Apart from the Nexus , What other devices are you hoping to introduce this year for us to play with ?
How easy/hard will it be to port ROMS to another other device ?
What will you offer us ( apart from a new OS to play with) that's going to steal market share from Android ?
What plans do you have for future updates to the OS ,will it become as fragmented as Android ? Will you push carriers to update ROMs or will it be down to XDA to do this
Will you make it easy for us to do our thing or will you lock the devices down (not that it will stop XDA lol)
If any of you are interested in getting Canonicals attention for us, the XDA Family being able to beta for them, here is a petition I started at change.org! It won't hurt to sign it guys, might as well try!

View sonic make the Viewpad 10 pro which is dual OS Android & Windows 7. I don't see why someone wouldn't design an Android / Ubuntu tab.... It would be easier to run and keep up to date.

I guess, it will be also possible to run Ubuntu inside chroot. But instead of vnc we should use native xserver inputs and ouputs (if ubuntu for phones will run xorg, there are rumors that canonical made a new display server).
I got ubuntu running in a setup like this on a SGS2 pretty good (xserver takes touchevents from /dev/input/event2 and draws on framebuffer). But i have some problems with the drivers, touch especially (using multitouch driver because evdev crashes -> can't rotate -> only useable in portrait-mode )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxats9ejrG0
But because Canonical said Ubuntu can run from an Androidkernel, this problems may be fixed already (for the choosen nexus handset at least)
