Charging takes forever - HTC One X+

Is it my phone or does charging take forever seriously in thirty mins it only charges 3-5 %
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda app-developers app

I have an HTC charger which came with my desire and it charges my one x+ at an acceptable rate. I also use a generic charger from eBay which is supposed to have a 2A output but charges at less than half rate. The one x+ sees the eBay one as a usb connection so not sure if its limiting the rate.
I would like to record the charge rate in an app then short the charger center pins (normally the data pins) then record again and see if this makes a difference. I haven't found an app that does this yet though.

Are you charging it using the wall adapter? If you are charging it using just the USB cable in a computer or maybe a different adapter, then it is trickling in at a much slower rate.
Otherwise, I personally have not noticed any issues with the charging rate. Keep trying for a while longer. It might be that it will take a while to break the battery in (this is a complete shot in the dark).

Agreed, the wall charger is much faster than USB to a computer/monitor.

An app that I use occasionally to monitor battery/phone charge/discharge rates that I've found top be very detailed and helpful:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw
Give it a look; it may give the type of info you're looking for.
Using the above app (previously) I noticed the same thing as the OP. Non-HTC wall chargers (even of they are rated at something like a 2 A output) charge the phone at only about 250-300 MA whereas an HTC charger (even an old one that came with an OG EVO 4G) will charge the phone at 800-1000 mA which results in a full charge from ~5%-100% in about 3 hours.
I haven't gotten around to looking into the specific differences between an HTC and generic chargers but would guess its a somewhat specific resistance applied across the data pins.

Hi
I used the htc charger that comes with my phone.
I have ARDH rom with stock kernel, and i have the "battery monitor widget pro" that has an option in its setting called "usb fast charge":
- When this option checked, i measured my charging rate from ~1% to 100% in 1h30 to 2h00 max (i noticed ~1100mA during charging).
- when this option unchecked, i have rate of 2h45 to 3h30 max (~850mA during charging max).
- with pc charging or any unofficial charger (with any mA/h types, even the 2A/h i.e the iPhone charger), i have charging rate of ~4h00-5h00 (max 300 to 400mA).
This is as i think the standard charging protocols of the stock kernel.
I learned this from back to my previous htc sensation that i have used the famous faux123 kernel that implemented these protocols after version 6 or 7 as i remembered.
Thanks

Car Charging?

So I went on a 2 hour trip using my EVO as a gps. I had it plugged into the car charger the entire time. Little did I know the EVO was using the battery faster than it was charging. I've done this many times with the EVO 4G with no problems. Any suggestions? The phone is basically useless as a gps for any long distance trips. The battery will never last.

get current widget, it tell you how fast your phone is charging, and when unplug how fast your phone is draining in mah, note your mah usage when unplug, then note your mah usage when battery is fairly low and plugged in to charge with the car charger.
if your battery is low (below 50%) and your phone still won't charge faster than 500mah on the car charger, it will not keep up with GPS uses, be aware that as the battery approach full, it charges slower and slower, near 97~99% it will only charge @ about 100mah rate.
I bet you have a cheapy car charger that only supply 500 mAmp, get one that can supply 1000 to 2000 mAmp (1A to 2A... 2A usually for DUAL usb outlet type charger)
deleted... double post hmmm
Mine wasn't charging unless it was plugged into the wall until I typed ##3828# and checked "enable USB charging". Now it charges while plugged into a computer or car as well.

I've never had a problem using this older but more powerful iGo AutoPower 3000 car charger. Overstock has them for $6.50+shipping and you get a bunch of power tips with it but not a microUSB tip.
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/iGo-AutoPower-3000-Car-Charger-Power-Adapter/3668307/product.html
The power specs on the package I have say:
DC Input: 11.5-16 VDC
Power Output: Up to 15 Watts continuous
Radio Shack sells the iGo a97 tip for $10+taxes but Amazon has the tip for $6+shipping(free shipping if you have prime).
http://www.amazon.com/iGo-Kindle-Motorola-RAZR2-KRAZR2/dp/B0012J52OC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310316568&sr=8-1
From my understanding, the tips have a resister in them which limits the mAmp output but I'm not sure what the a97 tip specs are since iGo doesn't seem to release that info. Hopefully it's 1A like the wall charger. I can verify that the newer single output iGo chargers are limited to .75A. So even if the tip is 1A, the charger is the limiting factor, hence why I recommend the older, more powerful one.

Read the label on the charger, make sure it say at least 1A or even better 2A
lots of cheapy dual USB on ebay that's not rated for 2A
if you got a 2A charger and current widget still show 500ma charge rate,
then you may have to figure out if your phone is charging in USB charge mode with the car charge (limit to 500ma by the phone per USB spec) or in AC charge mode (charge at up to 1A)
I just came across this other day that point out this problem.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-m...B9U8Q/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_3?ie=UTF8&index=3
look at the mouse over box comment... of course every charger is different so don't just blindly do the mod if you have a different charger.
as for the other guy asking for 2A charger....
Ebay and Amazon have alot, just make sure they specificly say 1A for single USB or 2A for dual USB output.
for 2A dual USB, the OEM HTC thunderbolt one seem to be the best but also most pricey, some alternative are the Motorola dual usb and the Tmobile my touch 4g dual USB

Was having the same issue;
I used the car charger I had for my EVO, left it on for 3+ hrs, with little to no increase from where I put it on at. Ended up using a buddy of mine sharger and viola. Imex99 explained the reason for it. Just buy a new charger with 1A/2A output rating and you'll be good.
I'm having the same issues. I click enable usb charging and then commit, but it keeps reverting back to disabled with no difference in charging capability.
Speaking of car charging, why does the battery temperature vary so much between AC & USB, versus Car charging?
With the supplied HTC AC charger or USB connected to a computer, the battery's charging voltage is 4.333 volts and the temperature is 81*F.
With a Sprint Car Charger, the charging voltage is 4.333 volts but the temperature is 95.5*F
Even chargers rated at 1A/2A may not have the appropriate pins soldered together to enable 1amp charging. Please see this thread I made when I had the Evo 4G:

Yes....... AND....
Those other phone don't draw nearly as much power as a Razr.
So the typical PC does not put out 750mA on USB because the spec says they only need to put out 500mA. If you are using the phone while connected to USB it may never charge. It won't drain either.

Get a battery monitor app, put it on the charge, see how much charge is actually flowing to the battery... with a 1750 mAHr battery, you can guess the charging time..
From my packard bell laptop with USB charging it gets 850 milliamp...so charging time is around 2 hours.... from a Wall charger it gets 1100 milliamp, so 1.5 hours is enough....
From my HP laptop it has the charging of 450-500 milliamp so it takes around 3 hours...
I have used the manufacturer of the laptop because each USB chipset has its maximum power rating... USB 2 had 500 milliamp at max and USB 3.0 has 900 milliamp of power rating...... so it depends which chipset you are using and which port you are connecting to.....
If getting more confused, try the standard AC charger.....
Also, I think you should make sure to put your phone on airplane mode (or at least turn 4g off) and turn the brightness down while you're charging. This way, more power goes to charging and less to battery draining stuff.
AND if you're willing to spend a little cash, (or you buy your phones at Costco like me) you can get one of the multimedia dock thingies from motorola. It literally charges in 3 hours on there.
Lol.. A wall charger will do fine for me. I've been scouting for the dock, to use webtop application.. But I can't find out over here on Malaysia.
I did find a great widget, battery info, which when discharging, it will display percentage of battery left, and remaining standby time.
However, the best part is, when charging, out will inform you time left to achieve 100% charge.. Its really cool..

Math lesson!
The battery is 1750 mAh, that is milli ampere hours.
As such, it will supply 1750 mA, for one hour.
Charging is the same but backwards, 500mA is what the USB port on your PC supplies.
That gives 3,5 hours to supply the battery the required power, assuming 100% efficiency.
But lithium batteries need a trickle charge from 90% to 100%, so that last bit is usually performed in 1 hour, independent of what mAh the battery has.
So on our razr that last 175 mAh will always take one hour to charge.
So that means that we charge 1575mah at a fast speed, that leaves 3,15 hours to charge using USB, and 1 hour to top charge.
That'll give you 4 hours and 15 minutes through the computers USB. =)

Im probably not as heavy a user as some....but Ive noticed the same thing. I unplug my phone at 7:30 and plug it back in at 9-10 at night usually with 20% left and when I stay up late Ive noticed it takes seemingly forever to charge.
I believe it recommended it either the online manual or the quick start up manual to use the charger that it came with. It stated that other brands or 3rd party may not charge the RAZR fast enough resulting with slower than usual charge times.
I have even heard of some people loosing power while it was plugged in and being used. I believe the 3rd party chargers were to blame Like others have said, the USB charging taking FOREVER, a car charger is a little better but not much.
If you download Battery Indicator Pro (from the market) you can set an option on how fast you want the battery to charge via AC outlet or USB.
Will also give you a 1% increment battery display
The Motorola razr can support upto a 1000ma charger..... technically, it means that if u pop it in the wall charger it will charge at 850ma per hour... it will have a full charge in 2 hours.... but a USB port on the PC or laptop is capable of providing only 500ma, so theoretically, it will take more than 4 hours for a full charge....
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I just bought razr after owning SGS1 for over 1.5yrs.
the usb charging is unnormally slow! even compared to SGS1 which has 1500mAh.
with SGS1 I used to use it for usb tethering and it charges in about 5 hours to full WHILE TETHERING!
But on Razr idle phone takes around an hour for every 5-10% of battery which is a lot!
I am wondering if there is any kernel fix or workaround that speeds up the usb charging, because this is not natural.
4 hours or even 6 hours is very reasonable charging time, but anything more than that is a lot.
I am thinking there is something wrong kernel wise.
edit: even comparing to HTC EVO 3D which has almost same battery capacity [1730 vs 1750] charges a lot faster than RAZR. and I do mean A LOT!

A lot of chargers will be rated less than the stock charger. Especially cheap car chargers. In that case the phone can only draw at the charger rating.

The values listed on the charger is the max output it can provide. If the setting on the phone or the hardware is set up to only pull 1A, then it will always pull that unless that is more than what the charger can provide.
That being said, you should be able to take the battery out and charge it faster separate from the phone. I've always read, though, that charging a battery faster ( i.e. turning up the current) will/may reduce the life of the battery

I tried to use iPad charger with 2.1A to charge HOX+, but it just doesnt work. Phone detects it like USB charging and you get something like 500mAh charging. Same for regular iPhone charger (slim one). HTC has some modifications on their chargers (think crossed data lines or something like this), so I get AC charging only with original charger and one fake copy of Apple charger from DealExtreme, which charges AC but also distorts touch screen while plugged.
Its great to use these nonstandard modifications which forces users to buy branded stuff for double price, wonder why HTC is in red numbers for some time...
Why would you want to rapid charge your phone your battery will degrade twice as fast

2.1A charger wont charge phone with full power, internal phone logic doesnt allow this. But advantage of using stronger charger is that you can charge phone with full 1A and still have some room for more when phone is under load and take more juice. At least this way it worked for me on iPhone, but Android devices have more limitations and HOX+ from what I found out is disabling 2 cores and limiting remaining two to 1,6 GHz while on charger...

How do tell what amps it charges at? All I can find is what the voltage, using 3rd party apps from the play store of course. My phone charges incredibly slow. Especially if I'm using it during the charge cycle. Hours can go by and it just sits there at 5%.

If you use KT kernel, it shows you in KTweaker the charging current.

Unless you are running a custom kernel with fast charge I think the phone will not charge at 1.9a unless the screen is off.

I'm running ktoons kernel without fast charge, and I'm getting 1.9

I'm on safe strap so running a custom Kernal isn't possible. I'm guessing I'm seeing the 1.9a when it's initially waking up from the screen off. I've tried the stock cable, as well as the Amazon one that is 1.9a.

The Fast Charge mode on the KT kernel has no impact on AC charge rate, it only affects USB charge rate:
Normally, when you connect to a PC, you get about a 500ma charge rate and the ability to pass data along. When 'Fast Charge' is set, you lose the ability to transfer data, but the 500ma restriction goes away. In practical terms, it means that you should see between 700ma and 900ma as a result.
w/respect to the OP, my experience is weird. When the device was new, I got around 1800ma on stock charger and cable; now, same setup gets me 900-1200 if lucky (even with new battery). When I tried the stock charger with a different (newer) cable, I get around 1600. It's strange that a cable's ability to carry a charge would degrade so quickly (if that's in fact what's happening).
I have no proof, but absolutely believe that kernel can influence max charge rate, because in the past, I've observed max charge rate drop with the release of a new kernel version, then go up again with another release.
Samsung did slow the charging rate in one of the OTAs. People had been complaining about the phones getting too hot.

its weird for me, when i use my qi samsung galaxy charging pad(wireless charging) i get 1.9a, but when i plug the cord in to charge(wired), i get 460mA. wtf??

What are you using to measure that? Qi isn't capable of charging at 1.9a
The galaxy charging current app..
So you've noticed that sometimes your phone seems to take forever to charge, and other times it seems to charge fine? Let me share some ideas that I've learned through lots of research on this exact subject last year...
I have used the galaxy charging app myself. In my opinion, CurrentWidget is better...looks cooler too. Ha.
So other than software related issues, you need to remember that the speed in which your phone charges is highly dependent on the hardware of 3 things:
1) Power Outlet (including power strips, extension cords, USB extenders, etc.)
2) Power Adapter (I highly recommend Anker's products!!!)
3) MicroUSB Charger Cable (if not using the factory Samsung cable or an Anker one, be sure that it's an 11-pin microUSB, and NOT a 5-pin...they look the same!)
Power Outlets - I know for me, if I use the outlet in my livingroom, it takes SO much longer for my phone to charge than it does in my bedroom. Just try this test! Grab that CurrentWidget app from above and try out some different outlets throughout your house, just to see whether or not the voltage varies. I bet you'll see that this is true!
Power Adapter - You should be using either the factory Samsung charger or a reputable 3rd party charger with the equivalent specifications (5V & 2.1A). However, I actually prefer my Anker charger over my Samsung one! If you're finding that you can't get a good charge, try swapping out your adapter with another one.
MicroUSB Charger Cable - As stated with the power adapter, you should also try to stick with your factory cable if possible. HOWEVER, I have found that to daily connecting and disconnecting of the cable with your phone, they probably receive the most wear and tear of anything else, and therefore may need replacement after some time. Again here, I find that using either my Anker cable or Samsung cable will give me the best charge. This is determined by both the CurrentWidget app and the amount of time it actually takes to get a full charge! Keep in mind that using USB extender cables can drastically lower the voltage to your phone - thus causing a very slow charge.
So basically, I know if I need to charge my phone as quickly as possible, I know I should clear my RAM and recent apps, put my phone on airplain mode, and using my Anker charger, I plug-in at the outlet near my closet door! I figured this all out by using these same ideas I just shared with you! Hope this is helpful!
If you can tell the difference between outlets, you need to call an electrician. Not kidding.

I doubt that's entirely true. I mean, think of if they're on different circuits, that kind of thing can vary...also, depending on what you have plugged into your outlets can cause lower outputs I'd assume. I'd bet if you used the app I referred to and ran a test at each of your outlets, and reported back here (being honest of course), that you'd see some differences. Anyways, that was far from the point of the post. But thanks for the insight!

The Samsung power supply is rated for 100 to 240 V @ 0.5 A input. It may be that the power supply is kind of crappy, and varies its output under small variations in input voltage, which is why you see what you see. It really shouldn't...but it wouldn't shock me if it did given that its made for $2 in China. Makes you wonder what would happen if you plugged it into a 240V source. When my wife went to Malaysia last summer to visit her folks, I just put a US to British transformer-less adapter on her Motorola brick and it worked OK plugged into 240V. Maybe the Samsung ones are crappier?
I squared R losses should be reasonably low in household wiring. NEC is 5% drop max at the outlet. And that is like the outlet the farthest from your mains under full rated load. Assuming you live somewhere typical, your voltage at the panel will be 120V+; a lot of time its a few volts over 120. If you have an outlet that is not tripping a breaker go below 100V, you have a problem somewhere. A 20% drop is not normal. Have you put a meter on the outlets with low charge rates?
My friend's OEM s4 charger charges at 1900 ma while my OEM charger only charges at max 1200... Weird how that happens but somehow the cable just stops charging as fast.
