[Q] Wifi connected but no internet connection? - Nokia Lumia 920

Has anyone else experienced wifi issues with their 920 where it's connected to the wifi, but there is no internet connection? It has been working fine since I got it back in November, then yesterday I noticed that when I was trying to open skype it just said connecting... forever. I tried IE and got nowhere, same with the people hub updating.
I eventually decided to reset the phone, and of course it then got stuck on the spinning cogs, so had to go through the whole mess of flashing the phone with the original EE firmware which did luckily bring it back to life. Then when it was running again, still the same wifi problem!!!
I eventually managed to get internet through the wifi again (for now) by switching the security from WPA2/PSK to Mixed WPA & WPA2, and then I switched it back to WPA2/PSK and it's kept on working now. But why did this happen in the first place as all my other devices (wife's iphone 4 and 5, surface tablet, latpop) were still getting internet through the connection no problem?

This sometimes happen to the L920, a reboot will fix the problem....L920 have still a lot of bug... so if you do not want to kill you phone, stay away from BAYGON

On what channel is your Wifi operating? I have seen People Report Troubles when their Access Point was set to operate on channel 12 or 13. Those are not available in all countries so that might be the reason.
Other than that I have no idea what the issue might be.

Reboots didn't help.
After a lot more investigation, firmware upgrades, tweaking of pretty much every WiFi setting under the sun, it looks like the issue was being caused by the two netgear WiFi bridges I've got attached to my sky boxes - every so often they randomly seem to interrupt WiFi connections from other devices - my wife's iPhone started having issues and when I necked the ip details, it had the netgear bridge ip as its gateway. Resetting both bridges seems to have solved the problems so will have to be my first port of call for any future issues!

[Q] Wi-Fi Problems

Got a 32GB version.
All my other devices, windows laptops, android tablet connect up to my wifi fine. I am using WPA with AES (static IP). The HP Touchpad connects, but there is huge packet loss and it barely can keep a connection. It doesn't drop out per se, just cant get any data. Tried changing router settings, being 30cm from it etc. Still same problem. Any apps/tweaks i can try on the Touchpad?
Maybe it has something to do with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with WPA, WPA2, WEP, 802.1X authentication;
maybe your router doesnt support it.
Just curious, are you running any of the Preware patches?
I am having a similar problem with my 16gb wifi model. Wifi works for a short while, then drops the signal. If I go in and turn off wifi on the device and turn it back on again - then it will work fine for another few minutes until it eventually drops the connection again.
I had this problem before I loaded any preware tweaks - and after as well. I am running the Govnah app to overclock to 1.5ghz and a few other logging tweaks.
I did some digging and it seems the most likely issue is a problem with the firmware of my router (D-link DIR-655), specifically the wireless n protocol. I am going to try updating my router firmware and see if that helps out.
By the way - no issues with my two laptops, dell streak 7, or my wii - so its definately isolated to be an issue specific to my touchpad/router combination...
I too am having problem. I don't drop the wireless connection, just a internet connection. All of a sudden nothing on my touchpad can connect to the internet, until I turn the wireless off and then back on again. Very weird. Everything else working off of my Dlink DGL-4500 works fine, except the touchpad.
I notice a few of you have Drinks, maybe thats the cause?
I'm running on FIOS and using Verizon's provided router. Works flawlessly. I've had one issue w/ WiFi, but a reboot solved that and has never come back.
I had problems with my dlink 615. TP would lose connection after 20 minutes or so. My wife's would do the same. My evo 4g had the same problem. I changed the router to the G only setting. I haven't had any problems with either TP since that change. The 615 uses draft N and was one of the early routers with this. I think it causes problems with some devices. I haven't really lost any speed either as the 615 will only connect at the speed of the "slowest" wireless card on the network, and I have some devices at g speed that are always on. I do plan to get a new router at some point.

See my Touchpad is the ONLY device having problems, that's the part I don't get. All of my devices are wireless N as well.
TouchPad WiFi issues
Okay, I've tried every custom kernel available with almost the same results. I'm beginning to think my unit is defective, but I am hoping it is the custom kernels and not my unit. I haven't tried restoring the stock kernel but I suppose I should have before writing this. Anyway..onto the issue!
Does anyone have this problem where WiFi will randomly stop transmitting data? It happens most when I am browsing the web with the stock browser and almost all the time it is after the unit awakes from sleep. Sometimes it happens while browsing but the majority of the time it happens when coming out of sleep. WiFi is still on and connected to my network, but network activity is not there. The only way to fix it is by doing one of the following:
-Turn off and on WiFi
-Launch the HP software catalog.
The second method one seems to give the network a jump start and WiFi will begin working again and data will transmit.
Freeza I think that's a common slug, I read some other posts about it. Heck mine was doing it a lot, but not so much lately. I don't think you have defective device.

I have this issue too, on two Touchpads on the same wifi network (mine and my wife's). The issue vanishes on my portable wifi 4G hotspot and my much better office wifi network, so it's probably my router. I've ordered a MUCH better router, and if that kills the problem, I'll know for sure within a week.
I hear this is a common, but situation-specific issue.
phew.... Was getting worried for a bit there. Thanks guys. Hopefully the next webOS update can fix it

I also have this problem. The wireless on the TP will stop working, even though it says it is connected. Disabling and re-enabling the wireless fixes it temporarily.
I also have an 802.11N wireless router. It is a Trendnet TEW-633GR. No other wireless device has ever had an issue with it, so I think the touchpad doesn't handle something properly...

[Q] Wifi dropping even when it shows it's connected (w/ Video)

I've had two Galaxy S II phones now, and I've had the same problem with both devices. The phone's wifi is great -- when it works. Although I noticed that the death grip lowers the wifi signal bar, I can still browse the internet and download apps just fine.
The problem is that, at times, the phone will show wifi connectivity and yet, I can't browse the internet or access the App Store. I'll have to shut off the wifi multiple times and even this doesn't work 100% of the time. Shutting off the phone and turning it back on works 100% of the time.
Since this has happened to two phones, I'm beginning to question whether I have an issue with the wireless router because I have not come across this as a prevalent issue. At the same time, my laptop and a family member's iphone doesn't have the same issue.
Anyone else having this problem? Or have suggestion for fixing the problem?
Thanks
Here is me showing the problem on video:
My roommate and I both have the Galaxy SII and he constantly has problems connecting to our wifi. The only difference in our phones is his is rooted and mine is not. I plan on rooting my one of these days but would like to fix the other issues I am having first.
Mine isn't rooted, but it still has the connectivity problem.
EDIT:
I may have found the the solution. Probably unique to my situation, but what I did was disable WPS on my router. It's a medialink router and I thought I had disabled it (per instruction) but it was on. Perhaps that was the issue. So far, no problem.
EDIT:
Nope, the wifi has dropped again. By dropped, I don't mean it drops in the middle of browsing. It seems to drop after I've stopped using the phone for a while. I've already checked to see that the phone is to never turn off the wifi when the display is off/sleep.
Arghhh
same exact problem.

Don't have any issue with wi-fi , mine is rooted on stock rom
i have no issues with wifi on my sgs2, i have wifi on 24/7, and on wifi proabably 50% of the time. it connects and disconnects when supposed to, picks up on cell data and drops when its supposed to..
fwiw, my GF has an iphone 4, she had problems connecting to the HOME wifi, but no where else, i updated the firmware on the router, same problem, i swapped out the router for a spare a friend had, and setup a second access point on the same network, just called it the same SSID but put a "2" after it.
her connectivity problems went away, immediatly she noticed a difference and has never complained of a drop since...
try different encryption methods, if you're using wep, try wpa, try a few different things.
also try a firmware update, you might lose your settings during a firmware update, but there is usually a backup/restore option you can use. backup your settings before flash, then restore after. if you have access, for at least testing purposes, hook up another router and use it to connect to and see if the same problems persist.
No problems at all connecting to a WHR-G54S running Tomato.
The Moto Surfboards are known to be flaky.
I had the same problem. after getting another one I found out that if I didn't download so many apps at one time the problem mostly stopped and after running a couple weeks, I haven't had the problem with connection since. I'm not sure it will help, but I did a factory data reset and reinstalled the apps one our two at a time (it's frustrating, I know).

WiFi not working

Anyone know why WiFi would work some places and not others? For example it won't work at my house. Just keeps saying scanning, connecting, disconnecting. I have gotten it to work in one bldg I work in. Not any other place. Is there a way to clear it out and start fresh? I have been able to.connect in the past with this phone and my wireless router at home. This all started 3 days ago. Im running complete stock. I have rebooted computer, router and phone, to no avail.

No clue. Mine unfortunately seems to work everywhere but my house. I have to keep wifi switched off when I get home because it causes the internet to stop working for every device in the house. Pretty inconvenient. Anyway I decided to buy a new router to see if that fixes it. Should be here tomorrow.
Well the new router fixed my wifi problem. I bought this Medialink - Wireless N Router ( amazon.com/gp/product/B0044YU60M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1DCPNQKKEISZB ) Sorry, forum wont let me post links yet. Set it up in a few minutes and instantly had wifi on my rezound.

[Q] "Authorization Error" Wifi Rejecting Password

I have searched all over and I don't find an answer, if I'm missing a thread please just point me in the right direction.
My home wifi has been working with my Note just fine since I got the phone (cue ominous music) up until yesterday. Last night, it started asking me for a password (which was weird, because it hadn't since I first got the phone and set the connection up), and I put the password in, but it kept saying "authorization error." I am really frustrated, I rebooted the phone, the router, removed the home wifi connection (the "forget" button) and reinput it -- I even booted into "safe" mode to make sure it wasn't some app -- no joy. It's a very simple linksys router, WPA/WPA2 security, all the other tablets/computers/phones in the house work just fine (tablets/other phone Android, laptops Windows.) And my Note was working just fine until last night -- no recent software install or update, it was seemingly just random. It's a stock Verizon Note, I haven't even bothered to root since it does everything I want.
Here's the kicker: I connect to OTHER public networks just fine. I connected to my work and McDonald's wifi this morning, no problems.
What could be wrong? I really need to be able to use my wifi at home, I don't see anything in Google or on the boards about this. I am hoping my search-fu is weak and someone knows what is up with this.
restore defaults on your router, then setup a new password.
Hope this Helps....

I have been experiencing this problem for the past 4 days. I have owned my Note II since December 25, 2012 and it has been working on any WIFI AP ive tried. 4 days ago in the middle of the day, my phone started giving out "authorization error" and would not let me log in to my home WIFI. I have 4 computers, 3 smartphones and other devices all working perfectly in my home WIFI. My problem even occurred when connecting to open, unsecured WIFI AP also. Nothing seemed to work. I called Verizon and did all the steps leading up to factory reset. With no luck on any tricks or tips from them I called Samsung. They walked me through the same processes and everything, so I decided to do a factory reset. This did not fix anything. I still get "authorization error" and "wrong password" on any WIFI i try to connect to.
I found out yesterday if I stand within 5 feet of my WIFI router I can connect and browse the internet for a few minutes until it kicks me off and does the same old "authorization error". If I sign in to my WIFI within the 5 feet and walk away, it disconnects and again, gives me the error messages.
I called Verizon back and they are sending me a replacement phone.
TL;DR:
Try accessing your WIFI when you are right next to it.
If problems still persist, call your carrier.
I hope your phone isnt as busted as mine.
Argh, that's bad. At least my phone connected to open networks so I knew the hardware was ok -- I wiped the router and set it up again (per the suggestion in this thread) and I'm good for now. (Embarrassed I didn't think of that myself) Hope you have better luck with your replacement phone!

Ok............ wow you have me 100% nervous now. I've been experiencing this issue ever since I unlocked, rooted and ROM'd my Note 2 back in the middle of December, and I experience the problem with only my Wireless-N SSID on my router. I can connect to the Wireless-G band just fine but the N one gives me this error no matter whether it's open or not. I seriously hope this isn't an issue of broken hardware..............
I figured this was worth mentioning. I have 3 Note 2's in my household, 2 of them are running Beans Build 5 and Perseus kernel overclocked and the other phone is totally stock.
All 3 phones have the exact same issue of connecting to the 802.11 N band on my router. They connect to the G band just fine. I think this rules out any worries about it being a lemon issue. Most definitely is a Samsung software issue that's been happening to multiple models going back a few years. Here's a google search of this issue using non-phone specific parameters. Notice how ALL phone specific forums point to a Samsung device.
I have a bad feeling that this is not something that will be getting resolved any time soon.
Edit:
The plot thickens. I have performed some tests on my router to see if I could get my phone to connect. Well here's my results:
5Ghz band = Wireless-N Only = Authentication error occurred
5Ghz band = Wireless-A/N Mixed = Connects instantly
2.4Ghz band = Wireless-N Only = Authentication error occurred
2.4Ghz band = Wireless-G Only = Connects instantly
The problem is clear. It's Wireless-N. I can connect just fine at Wireless-A speeds (54mbps max signal) and everything up to Wireless-G, independent of frequency, but as soon as I try to force Wireless-N onto my phone, it craps out and fails to authenticate. This happens regardless of whether I have the network encrypted or not.
And based upon my google search I have linked to in this post, I doubt this is something we can expect to be fixed anytime soon. Oh yeah and for the record, when I have my router set to Wireless-N only mode, I was able to connect instantly without error on my crappy old HTC Thunderbolt running a hacked together AOSP 4.0.3 ROM.
Yep............... GG Samsung
wireless n has been a unreliable joke since it was released...my favorite routers are the linksys wrt-54gl running linux dd-wrt firmware. one of the most affordable rock solid routers built. its only g band but most people do not need anything faster for home use. heck most of us cant afford the t1 type connection speed to utilize n band anyway.
Exact same problem as well...I'll have to try the Wireless N-only vs. Auto to see if that fixes it...
EDIT: Both wireless mode settings of 'N-only' and 'Auto' caused the problem. I had to set it to 'Legacy' in order to get the connection to stick without authentification errors. Have an ASUS RT-N66U router...
EDIT 2: Did the same thing on my Cisco E3000 and it worked as well.

It's not Samsung. There have been issues with myriad devices and wireless N pretty much the whole time it's been around. Android OS or the the N standard-- I personally know people with other manufacturers hardware and the exact same issues. If it's an OS problem, you would think it would be fixed by now, but who knows, like was mentioned above, very few people need the bandwidth that wireless n can theoreticly provide.
Good Luck,
Jason

It's definitely something specific with Samsung and the N2 since my cousin's G3 connects to the same router on 5GHz WirelessN/Auto with no issues at all. I think they have a bug to fix...
Can someone else perform a check with their Note 2 on a Wireless N only setting? It seems this is a bug that really need to be fixed.

"Internet connection is unstable" issue

OK, I've seen a lot of posts in various forums about this issue, but have yet to find a single thread that captures all the details about what I've experienced. Let me know if I should move this conversation into a different thread.
On my home wifi network, I am able to connect, but constantly receive the error "internet connection is unstable", and I cannot pull any data over wifi. I noticed this issue on my home network after returning from a business trip this week. I'd previously seen the issue occasionally in hotels, etc, and had already disabled the "Passpoint" and "Auto network switch settings". That seemed to work on the road, but now that I'm at home, I'm unable to pull any data over wifi.
My home router is a TP-Link Archer C7, running the latest firmware.
Per Verizon and Samsung's advice, I cleared the cache partition, "forgot" and reconnected to the network, tried using safe mode, and tried a factory reset of the phone. I also restarted the router and changed the router's broadcast channels.
Last night, I rooted the phone via Kingo and installed the Jelly 'Beans' rom using SafeStrap, since I wasn't getting satisfactory answers from support. To my surprise, the issue also occurred on the new rom. I'm not an Android expert, but it seems like this means its either:
1) a hardware issue, or
2) a lower-level software issue (radio firmware? not sure how that works)
I removed root and safestrap, to continue support options with Verizon, but I wanted to ping the community here for suggestions. The timing is confusing to me. I'm pretty sure, though not certain, that I've used my home network successfully since the 12/17 OTA update. However, since so many others are seeing issues, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.
Could others describe their issues and router, so we can look for patterns? Let me know if I should move this into a different thread.
Thanks!
Mine does the same thing from time to time but only on certain roms

yeah, I'd seen intermittent issues previously, but all of a sudden it stopped working at home entirely. Still connects to some other networks, although not all.
After seeing a bunch of posts on the Verizon forums (and just the general timing and behavior of the issue) it seemed like a software problem.
Verizon is actually cooperating, so I may just end up replacing this phone. Wondering if anyone else has seen wifi completely break like this.
This is the only thing I can not stand about my note
I have a Zyxel WAP3205 WIFI access point (Wireless G) that I use at both work and at home.
At home, I have Comcast Business Cable internet, and have absolutely no issues connecting to it. The WAP is connected to a Belkin N600 router, which is then connected to my cable modem (not sure of the model, shouldn't matter TBQH).
At work on the other hand, I have constant connection issues. Albeit, I don't get the 'connection is unstable' notification, but I get constant connect/disconnect problems. I also have almost no (most of the time I can't even send/receive text messages at my desk.....) phone signal (ie not even 1X). I'm not sure if that plays into it at all either. The company I work for uses Windstream for their ISP, and it's complete crap to be perfectly honest. Needless to say, it doesn't change the fact that I'm connecting to the internet through the same device (well, same model/firmware/etc...), and I'm having issues at 1 place and not at the other.
I might also add that my tablet (Nexus 7 2013 running CM11) doesn't seem to have these issues at all and works just fine via the WIFI.
That's about the only information that I can provide. I know my internet where I work is complete crap. I sometimes remote desktop back to my home server to browse the web and download files via that because it's actually faster. I'm not even kidding.
I have 2 routers at home and have experienced the same issue as well and none of my other devices have this problem

Verizon is shipping a replacement phone to me tomorrow, so I'll test this out and see if it makes a difference. I'm on the road until Thursday, so it'll be a few days before I can check on my home router.
The behavior on this issue just seems strange. It began intermittently, but then completely stopped working at my house (but still sometimes works elsewhere). Lots of people report intermittent issues, but a few seem completely broken. Not sure what to make of it, I'm just glad I was able to get a different device out of Verizon. We'll see if that actually fixes the problem.
I haven't had this notification until I got the Note3. Is it possible that its android 4.3? Or this tw 4.3? Anybody know if other folks get this with other devices?

I only have this problem if I connect to the wifi at work, which is odd because I'm about 7 unobstructed feet away from the AP. I don't get this anywhere else.
I had a Note2 on stock rom up to 4.3 and never had the issue. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 latest version, again, no problem. It's only on my Note3 with stock rom that this happens.

Same here. Never happened on my Note2 but happens all the time on my Note3. I have two Linksys Routers at home for full house coverage and I can be in the next room and get that message. Just got it earlier. Same routers as I had with the N2 a few months ago. My Tablet, nor the Spouses HTC One Max have that issue and are connecting just fine, and stay connected.

Has anyone with this issue installed AdBlock and/or an ad-blocking HOSTS file? I didn't start seeing this problem until I did both.
Whenever I see this message I can go into the speedtest.net app and pull a continuous 60mbits down, pretty much maxing my connection, and I never see any actual stability issues.
I think the system may have some connectivity test that's being interfered with but I haven't had time to go digging through the logs yet, so I wanted to see if anyone else had done what I did to trigger it first.
Seems to be two different issues being discussed here without really differentiating the two... the OP states that he is always getting the notification and "can't pull any data over wifi" ... others are saying they are getting the notification without really stating if it is affecting their overall wifi performance at all.
I'm on AT&T DSL... I was getting the notification ALL THE TIME while using the supplied (4 year old) AT&T 2Wire router and it would fail and freeze and disconnect and it was DRIVING ME NUTS... so i went out and got a brand new Netgear N300 router and problem is solved ... mostly
I'm still using the AT&T 2Wire as a modem... disabled it's internal wifi... ethernet cable to the Netgear. .. and BINGO!!! All my connection problems and data problems have gone away... i still get the unstable notification maybe once or twice a week but i figure that's a DSL thing... any little glitches in Internet availability will be detected by the device and displayed so that doesn't bother me at all.
It's almost like this phone does ping tests all the time and if one doesn't come back properly it throws the notification...
i was at a friends house the other day and was getting the notification constantly but was still able to watch YouTube videos and Netflix without much problem... so i did some speed tests on his wifi and his ping and upload were all over the place... His download speed was solid between 20 and 28 but his upload was never even close to normal and failed several times... and his ping was good on some and took forever on others... i also noticed Web pages would sometimes take forever to start loading ... Once they started loading they did so quickly but the start was painfully slow a lot of the time... This would indicate to me that the ping or upload connection has issues or maybe over congested on his iSP.
Anyway... hope this helps others iron things out

When I get the notification, it refuses to use the wifi at all.
I haven't noticed any problems with my WiFi. I host 6 wireless networks, and play with WiFi a lot, War driving, and wireless network setup is a hobby of mine.
One thing I noticed at several throttled Hot Spots My VZW note 3 would test the WiFi speed, if it was slower than 4G it would display a popup, something to the effect "Wireless too slow, using mobile Data" I can't remember the exact popup text. It might be a VZW thing.
I use the OOKLA speedtest, free from the play store. (After you run your OOKLA test, for fun drag the speedometer down to reveal some cool messages about Ookla!
A few wireless router settings I use:
Set 2.4 to N 20 Megs max. N 40 or AC mostly just creates problems with connections, and the neighborhood.
Channels 1, 6, or 11 in USA Use a WiFi analyzer app and pick a less cluttered WiFi channel.
Place wireless router up high away from electronics, construction, and stuffs. Mine is on a pedestal in a window.

Go to WiFi settings/advanced/auto network switch... and turn that off so it won't jump off slow WiFi networks

Thanks,
I just tested "auto network switch" on and then off. It let me connect to one of my throttled networks, without; "Checking quality of internet connection".
I noticed that it only showed; "network disabled because internet connection is slow" on the congested 2.4 GHz band, not with same router on 5.8 GHz.
Radio interference, location, and router settings, can cause many problems on wireless networks.

You're right, I noticed in my research that multiple issues seem to be getting lumped together. I think you're correct in that it's related to the router as well, somehow. I see the notification occasionally on slow hotel connections, but it's intermittent, my problem at home seems permanent. I can use some other wifi networks without problems, though.
That said, I used this phone on my home router for a couple months before ever seeing this problem. I'm guessing it's a combination of the 12/17 OTA update, and particular router models.
Verizon sent me a replacement phone, and it's running the previous build (MJ7 instead of MJE). I'll check things out tonight, and will report back.
Alright, the issue seems resolved on the new phone. This seems to suggest that it is related to the MJE build. So far this phone hasn't asked for an update, but I'm hoping Verizon doesn't break this again for me
