[Q] Simlock - Am I being fobbed off - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My brothers contract ended on his Atrix 4g and he said I can use it for rom testing etc
I have managed to root it, unlock the bootloader, install a Jellybean rom on it - all good.
It is however locked to T Mobile and I wanted to use it on O2.
I contacted T Mobile who want £15 to supply a code to unlock it. I took it into a local mobile shop who said that they can get the code within 24 hours. I left the phone with them and they said they would contact me when it is done-fair enough.
They phoned me today and said that this phone needs a higher level of unlock and will take up to 7 days. I have never heard of this before and just wanted to check to see if anyone here had heard of this and is nothing to worry about or the shop are just not very good.
Thanks

It is fairly common actually. I've seen most unlockers have that - either it's in what you might call a "quick lookup" database, or they have to take it to a "higher level". That usually costs more though.

I can actually confirm this. We've had a specifically memorable "higher-level" unlock needed for HTC handsets purchased after a certain date, until other suppliers could catch up.
It required looking up the unlock code in a different database, which was more likely to have the codes that were being requested. We'd usually only do that once we confirmed the unlock codes weren't able in the cheaper providers database.
So yes, it can happen. Although, I understand the suspicion.

[Q] unlock codes (cellunlock.net seems best bet)

if anyone knows of a site that will sell unlock codes online please comment. I live outside the US and want to buy this phone online but will need an unlock code.
I have already contacted some sites but they don't have an idea yet if/when they will get them
EDIT: supposedly swiftunlock.net and gsmliberty.net work, but no proof yet rather than words from users.
EDIT: pictures of atrix running under Bell operator unlocked
EDIT: most users report that cellunlock.net work, 40$ but with a 50% discount using the android50 code.
To find your IMEI, type *#06#
search“Atrix unlock" on google
Im also interested in unlock codes but please serious sites.
Hi Guys, I believe the Atrix will come unlocked. It is a world phone which I think means you will be able to insert a SIM card from over seas and it will work. Also I have heard that if you buy the phone and call ATT and tell them you are going over seas to use it they will give you the unlock code. But then again these are things that I have heard and wont be able to verify until I get my Atrix in the mail.
no phone from a carrier sells unlocked. i already tried att twitter account to get an unlock code but got a friendly no. maybe if i buy it a month later i could call att from venezuela with gmail to try and score an unlock code.
i have seen lots of sites:
mobileunlocked.co.uk supposedly sells it at 15$
unlockitnow.com supposedly has it too.
gsmliberty.net at 10$.
globalunlock.com seems serious and admitted they don't have it.
For the over seas thing to work with att you needed to have been in contract with them on that phone for 6 months or something

mobileunlocked.co.uk told me that all motorola codes are either 8 or 16 numbers and just rely on the IMEI and not the specific model.
find it on ebay
I'd also love to see this baby unlocked. I traveling to the US in 1 month and expect to buy one.......I'm crossing my fingers until then hoping for someone that guarantees to have an unlocked atrix

748$ on ebay, no thanks. And sadly, with my venezuelan credit card i need to buy the phone on a site that allows me to ship to a different address than on my credit card's billing address.
That leaves only amazon i think, but i may be wrong. If people know of other sites i would like to hear about them
unlockitnow.com just answered my email saying that they are selling the unlock codes right now. don't know if they are trustworthy

This is completely incorrect. An AT&T world phone merely allows you to use the phone with an AT&T SIM outside the country at exorbitant rates.
Please don't post your guesses or misinformation, it only confuses people who are in need of help & then gets parroted elsewhere to other sites.
Ok, starting to freak out a bit here as a friend will buy the phone and bring it back to Germany for me this week; is there a risk that there might not be a way to remove the sim lock from the phone? I mean, all phones are eventually unlocked, aren't they? Even a guy at one AT&T shop I called on Saturday said that it shouldn't be a problem, just to go one of all the companies that are providing unlock keys on the web.
Don't want to be stuck with an unusable 400-500 $ brick..
according to the info i am handling motorola's phones are one of the easiest to unlock. if you are that desperate try the links i have posted and write to them.
i have posted a link on the pricing thread that lists the phone at 550$ unlocked over at mobilecityonline.com

Well...that's not quite right. Because AT&T uses GSM tech, if you can unlock the phone, you absolutely can take out the AT&T SIM and swap it for a local one. I do it all the time when I travel: I buy a (local to where I happen to be) rechargeable SIM and I pay local rates rather than getting gouged by AT&T.
You must unlock the phone to do that, though.
i use theunlockr.com.

that site sucks. they don't have a link on the home page to buy unlocked codes, i had to go to "unlocking 101" under "wireless 101" and from there visit the "unlock for free" which tells you to call your provider after 3 months and at the end says "we sell them too", i tried the link: http://theunlockr.com/store/unlock-my-phone/ and it doesn't even load.

Received a Working Sim Unlock Code from at&t!

Been following this story for a while about how it seems like no online unlock service has been able to unlock the att lumia 920. I have also seen that multiple people it seems were given codes from at&t that would not work. Well last week I submitted an unlock request for my lumia 920 through at&t over the phone and today I received an email that had the 20 digit code. So I put an old T-Mobile sim in the phone, turned it on, entered the code, and it said pin accepted! This confirms that at&t is at least able to issue correct unlock codes but it doesn't explain why some work and some don't. (As far as I can find I'm the first one to actually get a working code)
For everyone who is still waiting for an unlock it is worth a shot to give them a call. If they say they won't unlock it due to the exclusivity deal, ask for a supervisor who can put the unlock request through.

Do you have to be an AT&T customer for that? I tried calling them and even speaking with the supervisor, with no luck, supervisor was even more insisting about the exclusive deal and no unlock till May.

I'd assume you won't have much luck if you aren't a current att customer. The supervisor who put in the unlock request told me that they can submit an unlock request for any phone except the iPhone which has to be out of contract to be unlocked. My lumia is under contract but I've also been with att for at least 7 years.

Same fore me - no real battling though and "only" 30 mins on the phone for nothing. Agent also spoke with supervisor. June was what they told me (so much for "it's the same for all Lumia 920s, not just your device..."). And, of course, they even don't have the codes yet.
Idk why they won't budge for you guys, the only thing I can say is keep trying until you get an agent who will submit the unlock request for it.

Will do. I tried to gently push him to still submit a request, even though it fails, so that I had something in return (if it is just the negative reply from the unlock team) to follow up with. However, he would not submit the request because it would be the same result as he is telling me - no code available for my IMEI yet.
I'm currently very busy at work so I can't spend 30-60mins each day chatting with AT&T. Will try in a week or two.
BTW, I guess you being a long-time AT&T customer could have also been influential. I am a 2-day customer because I cancelled service again due to bad voice quality at my work location. However, paying the ETF, I fulfilled my contractual obligations so I'm only asking AT&T to fulfill theirs (3.1 of the Wireless Customer Agreement)...

Yeah my lumia is under contract but yes I have also been a customer for at least 7 years. The problem is there is no standardization with these unlock requests so it seems like it's just the luck of the draw of who you talk to... I'd be really surprised if you got a denial email, it seems like the difficult part is just getting the agent to submit the unlock request...

It's the standard exclusive device wait for 6 months after release rule on AT&T for contract phones. Dunno about other carriers.
So whenever you bought it, plus 6 months, you can sim unlock it.

Apparently there is no way at all to unlock currently except thru ATT. I guess that is harder than I expected b/c it seems no one in this thread has been able to get an unlock code. It just depends on the CSR you get on the phone, I got them to unlock it on my first call to them so I guess I just got very lucky.
guys, I'm from Ukraine
please tell me. Can I write to at & t email?
What information do I need to write that would have been any result ..?
and in advance sorry for my spelling mistakes))
I called them back in Dec 2012 and got the unlock code from at&t; however the code only 11 digit and will not work.
Does anyone know or could confirm how digit the code should be?
Also, does it have to be a T-Mobile chip or any GSM chip will work?

Unfortunately, there seem to be very few people who managed to get an unlock code from AT&T, and most of them were long-term AT&T customers. If you are not a customer, neither phone nor e-mail support is likely to get you anything meaningful. We'll just have to wait and hope that codes will leak out to 3rd parties earlier than next May.

should be 20 digit code and any none att sim should work
entering the unlock code
for those who tried the 20 digit code for the lumia 920. try this. i had that problem with my lumia 900 from at&t i got the code and entered it and it would not accept the code. i had to use all ten tries and then it asked me to enter MY PUK code. i then entered the exact same unlock code as the PUK code and it unlocked the nokia lumia 900. my theory was that i never activated the phone with an at&t sim card i just bough it and popped in my foreign sim. i tried it with multiple unactivated nokia lumia 900s from at&t and it work. so if you bought a lumia 920 but didn't activate it with an at&t sim card this may be the reason the unlock code didn't work, you can either activate the phone with an at&t sim or try this process that i've used.

Nokia Lumia 920 Unlock will be available from May 9th via ATT

Hi,
I was getting my Iphone unlocked this morning and I asked ATT rep when would I be able to request a unlock code for Lumia 920 and rep answered May 9th. so hopefully from may 9th we will be able get a unlock codes from ATT. :good:
First date they gave me was 28th Feb.. then 16th March.. then June..
so now we have May9th..
AT&T... balls..
It is always 6-month from the release day (for nearly all new AT&T smartphones, not just Lumias). So, L920 was released on Nov. 9, 2012. May 9, 2013 is exactly six months later. That's the correct date. Any other dates are pure BS.

i'm thinking that is really the date friend of mine who works at att was trying to get unlock code for me but after running my imei he told me not till may 9th
You would think if May 9 is the date that there be a media blitz or some public announcement about this for an Iconic device.
Only iPhone get that kind of media attantion. Lumia 920 hardly a big sell on AT&T. I'd bet GS3 sold multiple times of L920. All new phones from AT&T has lock out period.
I have small query, If i buy AT&T L920 now(off contract)... and my phone is no longer in US when unlock codes are released by AT&T.. will i be able to retrieve unlock code for my 920 over the web or any other mode outside US?

The only way to get unlock code from AT&T is to call AT&T customer service. Officially, AT&T only offer unlock code to its customers. They don't have any obligation to offer non-customer the code but in the past they do offer them to you.

Actually it isn't. We provide unlock codes as part of our business. We don't call their customer service team for each unlock code that is ordered.
Codes are kept in a database corresponding to each unique IMEI. Therefore, if you have access to the databases, you can obtain the unlock codes.

AFAIK, there is no outside access to the unlock code database for Nokia phones within lockout period. This is true for Lumia 900 and still true for Lumia 920.
FINALLY
Well, on my 4th call to ATT customer service I managed to get the rep to open a case, he gave me a case number and said I should be receiving an email within a week with my unlock code because I purchased the phone outright and it is not tied to my contract!!! you see, I dont have att service but my in-laws do, for a long time now....So, I called about 4 days ago and said I had a new phone that my children (impersonating a 60 yr old woman) bought for me because they knew how much I hated my current phone, so I registered it on my account and what not, then I explained to the rep that I was traveling to europe and that I needed to use my phone there with a local carrier because I did not want to incur any extra expenses with att, they then proceeded to ask for my IMEI and then to tell me that my phone was not eligible to be unlocked because there was an agreement between Nokia and att, I asked what should I do, that I couldnt believe that I had to purchase a phone in europe, that I was with att because of their 'easy ways' etc......I was transferred to another rep who just explained in detail why the phone could not be unlocked and told me that I should try to "rent a phone"......I initially stated that I was staying in europe for about one week and I was very very nice!, well, they would not help me. TODAY I called with a NOT SO NICE ATTITUDE, i stated that I was traveling to europe and would be staying for maybe 5 months, that I had called previously and was told that I could not be helped but that a friend of the family which was in my same circumstance, had his phone unlocked, so I was calling back because of this, because I had been with att for about 10 yrs and I needed to be able to use my phone, blah blah blah.... well the lady rep told me that my phone was not eligible to be unlocked (after i provided my imei), that I had not met the requirements for this, which were to have the phone for at least 1 year, etc.... I told her that the phone was purchased outright from my children who knew how much I hated the phone THAT WAS TIED TO MY CONTRACT, well, the rep started to get nasty and i did as well, I told her to transfer me to a superior which she did, then, I got a male rep on the phone who was very nice and basically explained to me in depth what this other lady said, I then said that I did not understand how other people that have not been with att for so long have been able to get the unlock code when traveling abroad, and I am not being helped, etc etc.... he then said that because there is an exclusivity agreement and the phone is tied to a contract that I could not have it unlocked, then I explained that the phone that I purchased on the contract was my older one, that the lumia was given to me by my children and that they paid around 500 dlls for it, that to please escalate this to the unlock team who sent my 'friend' an email unlocking his device, then the rep said that he was going to open a case to see if they could help me since i purchased the phone 'outright'!!
......SO, now I just have to wait!! hopefully it works out!!!!
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST BUT ALL OF THIS POINTS TO:
1) Find a friend or family member that is in good standing with att and ask them if you can impersonate them
2) KEEP CALLING THEM!!! You'll get there in the end..... It only took me 4 phone calls!
I will let you know if it works!!! :fingers-crossed:
p.s I just could not wait until May 9th, blame it on my ADHD!!!!!
if i purchased the phone on eBay from 3rd party can I still ask At&T to unlock the phone starting May 1st? or only the original acquirer can have it unlocked
Talk to the seller and ask if he has activated the phone on at&t network also if he is a customer or not. If everything is positive then at&t may entertain your request else, wait till 2 nd week of may. Hopefully third party unlock code providers will start unlocking. But also be aware that as soon as these services are available the prices on eBay and other such sites will shoot up.

Can you provide screenshots to prove your Lumia 920 is, in fact, unlocked? I've seen a handful of posts purporting this to be doable and have tried for countless hours myself with no luck, even when certain 'helpful staff' attempt to get a code for my phone, they come back all saying the same thing - even if they wanted to, they couldn't get one until May 9th because the codes haven't even been generated and handed over by Nokia yet due to the exclusivity agreement.

That simply means someone up in the chain spotted the error and denied your request. It happens all the time. But once in a while, a request goes through and unlock code obtained. Nothing wrong with that. It's just your luck.
I've done that successfully once.
Yeah... There are three other people I know with the AT&T Lumia 920..
And they have all gotten theirs unlocked by AT&T and we're not even in the US, never had an account with AT&T or anything..
I'm the only one who hasn't had any luck...
So I know it's possible.. I've seen their phone and they are all using them on the local network.. it's very upsetting that I haven't gotten through..

If it doesn't work with the stock ROM and you've already adjusted the APN settings using the Access Point app then you'll have to flash a different ROM.

Anybody, any news?? especially from unlock code services??
Sent from my Venue Pro using Board Express
Cellunlock.net says that it will be unlocking the 920s in 2-4 days.

working SIM unlock guide ?

none of the posts in this forum are related to unlocking the phone - it is just a bunch of paid links for a "maybe" working unlock service
where are the applications to do the actual unlocking - why no one is giving proper unlocking tips ?
Please post here only if it is actually working unlock software or guide - NONE OF THE PAID CRAP PLEASE!

Read the other threads. The only way to get an unlock code for an AT&T Lumia 920 is if you are an AT&T customer and push the customer support really hard. There might be some other requirements such as being on a business account too. I am on a business account with AT&T and was able to get a 920 unlocked after spending an hour with the customer support.
Any site claiming to be able to unlock an AT&T Lumia 920 is a scam, plain and simple. Third parties MAY be able to after May 9th.
not a AT&T customer - T-Mobile UK
problem is that here on this site was always the place you can find the tools to free you phone but for Nokia Lumia 920 there no useful posts for SIM unlock.

There is no problem, there just is not any unlock codes for the Lumia right now. Unless you are an ATT customer and no longer under contract you will not be able to unlock your phone. Your best bet is to get a Rogers version which is already unlocked as stock.
As you said all the sites for the 920 are scams and those claiming they have done it are working for or being paid by those same sites.

I believe the point here has nothing to do with carriers, but software plug in to generate code from phone directly.

Nothing exists yet. Only carriers / Nokia has the codes at this point.
flash new firmware
So
Just to get things clear
say I have a locked Lumia 920 (EE carrier UK)
if I will flash a new firmware with NaviFirm+ 1.7 and Nokia Care suite
Like RM-821 GLOBAL WHITE SWAP (059Q5C7)
wouldn't it unlock the sim lock?

Firmware has no affect on the SIM. The SIM controls what carrier you connect to as it is the SIM that you actually are paying for in your contract. So in answer to your question, you can flash till your heart goes poof, it will make no difference. The phone will still be locked to what ever carrier the SIM was programmed for.
yes - flashing it not going to remove the SIM lock -already try few times
I wonder how many of you have heard of JTAG.
Too bad most people dont seem to know how to use it (or can afford that kind of equipment).
I would try to find a "unlocker" who you can actually talk too (face to face). I personally would use an online unlocker too BUT, it just seems weird having asian people try to convinve you they are american citizens, selling %100 authentic unlock codes. I also see bad reviews.
My Advice:
Look for some guy (or girl) who works at a phone carrier station store (one that sells multiple brands of phones). Perhaps they can JTAG Unlock or Factory Unlock your phone.
OR
Go to your phone carrier (not the one locked to the phone) In person, and explain how you have this locked phone but would LOVE to use it on their service. If they refuse, just keep asking "why not?". Try to justify your use on their service (meaning, tell them that they are supposed to be obligated to unlock).
OR
If you are really bent on getting a carrier unlock, go to the locked carrier and then tell them you accidentally purchased the phone second hand, thinking it would work with your network. If they refuse to unlock (under any terms or licence) then ask for a refund. If they refuse, then get mad. They just ripped you off.
OR
Contact customer support of the manufacter of the phone. Explain that both your, and the phone's locked carrier refuse to unlock, and you feel that their brand (the phone's) is really dissapointing to you. Most companies used to give free stuff to sad or rageing customers for free - perhaps you can get an unlock.
In the end: The truth will set you free. Unlocking should be free, but as time goes on, codes become more complex.
Good luck getting a free unlock. Im not saying its impossible, but it is all about time, money, branding, and customer satisfaction. And believe it or not, that all costs money. They (the locked carrier) lose money everytime someone hacks, exploits, or JTAGs their devices, which is why they usually come priced by duration of service or fixed fees.
Hope this helps. My texting hands are tired!

FINALLY!!!

Huawei will stop providing bootloader unlock codes.

Huawei will stop providing bootloader unlock codes. If you want code you have 2 months to request it, after it they will stop this service. :silly::silly:

Thanks. Well that sucks
Luckily have already requested mine and awaiting it.
But if I need to get a replacement phone in future I wont be able to root
Last Huawei I get then...
Got my code yesterday. But this is probably my first and last Huawei phone.
And DC Phoenix developers will raise their prices for it...I bet DC Phoenix is developed by Huawei.
I don't know why phone manufacturers do this. First it was Apple - the never ending war againt Jailbreakers. Instead of registering the phone for voided warranty and denying service for jailbroken iDevices, they fight againt ist.
Now Huawei does this - it's nearly the same and for me the rooting "freedom" on Android was the main reason to switch from iOS.
So, first and last Huawei I've had...after waiting 1.5 years for good custom rom development and good community support for EMUI I will choose another manufacturer - is the question: which one? Nevermind.
My main reason against iPhone too, locking down to only get everything through them and charging through the nose for the privilege...
OnePlus seems like a good way to go at the moment. I am quite tempted to go back to my HTC days as far as I know they are one of the better most lenient I have come across and their phones seem to be getting to the top of the pile again stat-wise...
i got my code instantly from the site. Stupid move by Huawei. One of the main reasons I got this phone was because i could unlock the the bootloader. If they dont change their decision this will be my last Huawei.
Are the unlock codes a alpha numeric 16 character code ? I just want to double check the code i got is correct.

Mine is 15 digits, not letters.
Well that is terrible news...
Now here's another thing, my wife has a p10, I haven't rooted yet. Figured I'd wait till her warranty was near it's end to avoid any hassle if it needed servicing.
I went to that link in the op, thing I noticed is that when trying to register there is no option to select Canada or the US from the country list. Did those of you that have used that site, did you have prior accounts created, or does the country matter?
I would like to have the unlock code for later use.
If not, I guess I'm looking for another carrier to buy out this contract to get another phone.
I was rather impressed with her phone, and would have liked one too once my Sammy's screen kicked the bucket.
Now I have no idea what phone is worth getting for modding. Seems like very few options left...
Myself, I ditched apple because jailbreaking became an impossibility. I just can't fathom owning a device without administrative privileges. Plus if it weren't for custom ROMs, my phone would have received no further security updates. This is horrible business practice. At least windows gives its users years of monthly updates.
This is indeed ****ty news...

I sent an email through this
I had to send a couple before they got back to me with this...
"Thank you for contacting Huawei Customer Care.
We have sent you a email in which we said the following. It seems that it didn't end up to you, we're sorry about that. Please fill in the following and send us the reply.
But, in response, please note that we can, of course, generate and provide the bootloader code for your device.
However, please keep in mind that unlocking the device's bootloader voids its warranty and might cause numerous software issues (unlocking any device's bootloader is considered to be software manipulation).
Should you still require the code, please provide us with the following details:
Full Name (if applicable):
Email address (if applicable):
Device model:
Serial number:
IMEI:
Product ID - dialing *#*#1357946#*#*. If not available, the invoice should be attached."
After sending that about week later got the u/l code

Thanks for this.
Edit: Wife contacted Huawei by email. First response was their branch couldn't help and gave a link to contact the same domain name with a different contact name, however the contact is non existent. (So far twice they responded with a non existent contact)
We're waiting to see if they respond with a working contact.
If not, we'll look at another carrier buying out the contract and get another phone I guess. It's sad because it is a nice phone.
Edit 2: not looking like we're getting an answer.

That is concerning, now I want to test the code but I like others was going to wait and unlock. I heard others are getting the code by email, but mine was given instantly. Have others got it instantly? I just don't want to assume the code is legit then when I do go to use it it's not and it's to late to get one. Is there a way to test it without actually unlocking it. I really don't feel like wiping my data, just to check it

Just enter the unlock command with your code. If your code is working there will be a message for factory reset, there you need to press "Yes" or "No". So no factory reset if you don't confirm it.
If the code isn't working you'll get adb error "invalid command"
