It's possible right now click the link in my sig the only problem you might run into is HTC-DEV has been hit and miss lately send the unlock code email

After you're rooted, look into going S-off. Well worth the time to get it done
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

^^^^^ this HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!! Although there is no support for 3.16.651.3 ATM. HTC is making harder to modify if you are S-ON with each update

I'm in the same situation as you. I have the latest update and really want to have a rooted phone again. I guess we will just have to wait

You can still unlock and flash roms with 3.16 s-on it's just harder because you have to fastboot flash the boot.img first if the rom does not have a kernel installer

1.13.651.1 is the stock ROM that was released with the phone. Consider yourself lucky if you want to root and unlock, because this version you can root, unlock and S-OFF. Don't take the OTA update if you want to root, unlock and S-OFF.

That the one that just ame out 2 weeks ago. He right. If u wanna root without ease, run your S-Off now, then flash the firmware. Or else u won't be able to S-Off if u accept the update.

So the new one can't root, unlock and S-Off yet?
I thought it was possible. Hmm.. maybe I gotta read more.
(Reason why I'm curious is because I want to return my phone for a new one. The 3G on my phone SUUUUUUCKS compared to my brothers. But now yo're giving me things to worry about. =[ )

If I am not mistaken you can still unlock through htc and root but you won't be able to get s-off.
It is an early build! I got the 1.22.651.3 notification...I declined (Root baby)

In that case, I'm not so worried about it.
I don't need S-OFF on this phone anyway, as you can flash Kernel even with S-ON on this phone.
Thank you friend.

That is the official updates for the phone from sprints website, but just found out reading through here to not update to the latest if you want to s-off.

I don't think this is true anymore - I'm pretty sure the new hboot in the update prevents flashing kernels when s-on htc unlocked.

New Fixed phone

Just got my EVO LTE back after having it fixed aka replaced. The version I got back is not updated to 2.13.whatever and is still on 4.0.3 android.
Should I root as is, or is there a root for an updated version? Can somebody point me to the right guide? I was going to root immediately when I bought the phone but the camera didn't work. Thanks in advance for any help.
What is your hboot?

I am on the same version. I just unlocked the bootloader via HTCDEV and installed TWRP through fastboot. Then I installed ROM that was already rooted. Worked great, just sucks with our new HBOOT not being able to achieve S-OFF. Not a huge deal but I love flashing between ROMS that require me to flash kernels through fastboot and not fond of the extra step (Between Sense and AOSP roms that is)

Not to speak for him, but all he is saying that since you are S-ON u need to flash kernel (boot.img) separately when u flash roms for it to install correctly without bootloops.
There are a number of ways to do it. The new mean rom has an auto kernel installer so u don't have to do it separately. U can also use flashGUI apk available on the market to do it, but make sure u learn how to use fastboot command prompt before doing so.
Lurk some, you will find it if you search forums. I am S-off, so I am not familiar with any off top of my head. Sure any rom u want to install will have at least 30 posts about people whining the rom didn't take bc they're S-ON and have to be redirected to another link.

Thanks for the quick response.. I'll do some looking. Is the possibility of S-OFF still possible with 1.19 we just have to wait for source code to be released to do so? Or is this a permanent sort of deal...

It is not possible right now to have s-off w/ hboot 1.19. It is a possibility in the future that it could happen, but you really don't need it if you learn how to manage with S-ON. S-off really only eliminates a couple minutes at most to flash kernel is all. Plus to flash New radios you need to relock and run RUU for latest firmware which will also update your hboot on S-ON.
A few headaches, but nothing you can't live with. Good luck.

If the 3.15 RUU only updates you hboot only you can find the fix here
Don't run the JB RUU it is known to cause problems. Relock your phone and take the OTA. It is the safest way.

I locked the phone and did the ota, but whe ir rebooted it it got stuck in the first menu where you can chose recovery and fastboot. I removed the custom recovery and relocked the phone. I downloaded the update again and this time it got stuck in recovery. Do you have any idea how ro get this update to install?
I got it to take the OTA update. I had to remove the custom recovery, lock the phone and install the stock RUU for the version I was on. Now I just need to get s-off and I'm good.
Thanks for all the help.

Hey man, can you tell me where to find the stock recovery? I can't remember where to find it. I've been searching xda for about 45 minutes.

tampered/locked/s-off [solved]

VERY long story how I got here, won't get into it. I'm now on hboot 1.12 and need to re-unlock my bootloader. As stated in title, I'm s-off with a tampered/locked status. If someone can point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

If you have s-off, you don't need to unlock. You can flash things through the bootloader. What are you trying to do? Recovery? Update firmware? Once you're s-off through Lazypanda or Dirty Racun you keep s-off.

That should be all you need to do. Be careful with firmware though. Make sure to do it in order. Flashing straight to the newest one has been causing bricks.

Yeah, I wish I knew which one I was currently on. I'll just start from 1.22 and move on from there. Thanks again man.
Check the radio when in bootloader.
1.12.11.0809 is from the 2.13.651.1 OTA
1.12.11.1119 is from the 3.15.651.16 JellyBean OTA
1.12.11.1210 is form the newest 3.16.651.3
Make sure to flash the Captains full firmware zips from bootloader.

Sweet baby jesus. I wonder if my major malfunction had to do with the new TWRP. Basically, my data partition went to crap out of no where.

HBOOT question

i am really curious as to what does flashing a new hboot does, reason i ask is because i unlocked my device without issues, i also obtained s-off thanx to our wonderful devs, and im running venom rom. however im still on the old software. to me everything is running fine as far as i know so i dont want to take ota and lose everything, now im also seeing new hboots or ENG HBOOT and im wondering if i should flashed them since i have s-off but i would like to know the benefits of it, thanx

Most of the hboots in the section are for devs and modders. If you just flash roms to get root experience, there is no need to worry about updating to a new hboot. Only time it is absolutely necessary is when HTC releases a firmware update.

Most of the devs are working on OTA updates to their individual roms. I would just wait for whatever rom you are running to be updated. Saves you the problems of trying to fix your device if anything does go wrong with the OTA.

I would not take the ota update... But I would flash the newer radio to improve general connectivity that Verizon has implemented in the update... You don't need the eng hboot for that... Look in original development for the radio thread
