[Q] Sprint Connection Optimizer Disables 4G? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So after the 3.16 update, I noticed my phone was not picking up 4G. After pulling my hair out to figure out why, I traced the problem to the Sprint Connection Optimizer being disabled. Turn it on, 4G toggles on with it, turn it off, 4G toggles off with it. The previous version of the Sprint Connection Optimizer did not do this. To confirm my suspicions I reset the phone to stock and observed the same behavior.
This is quite the pain in the ass as I don't want my phone connecting to WiFi networks that I marked "remember". In addition, I don't need my phone connecting to WiFi at work (which I use for work purposes under special circumstance).
My short term solution is to forget WiFi networks but this is rather tedious. With the Sprint Connection Optimizer toggled off, I am essentially locked out of 4G. I pay for Sprint's service and I insistent on using as much of their/my bandwidth as I chose.
Can anybody else confirm what is happening. My area has relatively strong 4G coverage, to the point where seeing 3G would be a rare occurrence. I need to make sure this isn't a problem on just my device before I roam my way out of my contract.

Why would you not want to connect to WiFi networks that you mark remember?....jw
If you have the option of your local WiFi versus 4G most times I'd expect someone to want to go with the WiFi... Only time you'd want to not is in places where 4G was better connection, which in those cases I wouldn't want to mark said WiFi networks as remember...
Ill try to mess with it here see how it effects my stuff as were rolling 4G a lot now...

In most cases work wifi won't let you watch porn at work man. Total pain in the a$$. We should be able to toggle our own connections. I will say wifi is better on battery and generally faster. However there's potential risk on wifi that someone could access your device. Extremely unlikely but a possibility none the less.
In my area we don't have lte yet and the other day after installing MeanBean I saw 4G pop up in signal bar then went away then came back. Haven't seen it since. I was so excited but I shouldn't get my hopes up. Sprints been saying 4G for a long time and still nothing. Only reason I stay is unlimited data and I live the HTC evo line.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery 5 times than someone accessing/ hacking your phone over wifi without you knowing about it.
Also there are great wifi apps that tells you who is on the network your on at all times.

I have found that Comcast seems to throttle youtube traffic at certain times of the day, and I have a specific spot in my house where my wifi signal just completely drops (but still claims to be "connected.") I'm obviously going to want my phone to remember my home wifi connection, but I don't necessarily want to always be using it at home.
My situation may not be incredibly common, but it's a valid scenario where you may not necessarily want connection optimizer to run the show.

The optimizer isn't your issue there though, as the mere fact of having the network remembered in the phone will cause it to connect to it whenever within range.... Its the fact you have a remembered WiFi network saved and you want to override that in a specific location when still in range of the WiFi... In that case the only solution is to toggle it off when you don't want to use it at that specific location in your house...
Optimizers doesn't just force you to connect to your local network that's remembered as the WiFi being on will do that itself already...
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

You can try disabling Sprint Connection Optimizer and try purchasing Juice Defender Ultimate. If you use its location service, it will only turn on wifi in places that you turn on the wifi antenna and remember them. And if it turns it on, you just manually turn it off until its trained.

[Q] Evo 3d Net Speed Question

new to androids and sprint so I searched the forums and found nothing related to my issue, so here goes.
I have a sprint air rave at my house and when i do internet speed tests whether it be through an app or a website i can manage barely 2mbps DL and sub 600k UL
When i turn wifi on i get my normal 10mbps DL and ~2mbps UL that i would get through my PC's...can someone tell me if its an airrave setting or is it just the way that the phone is set up to work with the air rave?
im Running Synergy rev 344 on my Evo 3d
This is because the airwaves uses Evdo while you use speedtest. If you turn off the airaves and perform a test again you're not using evdo you're using your home wifi.
You should be able to use wifi while the airraves on, just go into quick settings and turn off mobile network before you perform a speed test. Make sire to turn it back on when you're done!

thanks for the quick response! so i guess it was the way that the air rave is programmed (i had a inkling that that might have been the reason)

tried google searching but i couldn't find any explicit stating of airave speeds.
wifi hardware on the evo 3d has the greatest speeds of all the radios on the device.
airave is using pure cell phone, 3g/evdo technology to communicate with the device which has bandwidth limitations.
to list the radios in the phone in order of speeds i've seen:
1) wifi, 2) wimax, 3) 3g/evdo/airave, 4) 1x
i also have an airave at home and i never thought to run a speed test on it. i usually flip on wifi if i need to pull down a lot of data while at home. mainly just use the airave for placing/receiving voice calls and sometimes text.

turning on wifi with an airave and w/o works the same as with a cell tower signal and without.
when wifi is turned on android switches data to operate over the wifi radio and leaves voice/text over the cell radio which will go through either the airave or the sprint tower.
when wifi is turned off android switches data back to going over the cell radio which uses either the airave or the sprint tower, whichever has better signal.
hope that makes sense and helps!
No problem
Yeah the airave just gives you evdo speeds not wifi also be aware that it won't know if you're calling a mobile phone or a landline, so any minutes used to call will be deducted from your monthly minutes.
sent from a double barreled shooter
both of those are awesome pieces of advice!
yea i tried to google it also but couldnt find squat on the airrave speeds, lol i usually have wifi on at my house but i was curious to find out the throughput speeds of the airrave.
and also thanks for the info on the cell calls....when sprint sent it to me...they didnt say a word about the air rave not knowing if i was calling a cell or landline so i will definatly have to watch who i call from now on
Ya it really depends on what person you get from tech support. I don't know this from first hand experience only what i was told by a tech rep, mine won't be here for a few weeks as they're on backorder :/ so maybe the rep that told me was wrong, just pay attention until we know for sure

[Q] Losing signal on my Amaze 4G

Okay, here is my problem: Every once in a while I will completely lose all signal on my phone. It wont pick up 2G, 4G, nothing. Wifi and bluetooth both seem to work though just fine. I've searched and haven't found anyone with the same issues so I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if nobody has commented on it. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, when my phone refused to find service. I was stuck with the little X next to the signal meter. I figured I was just in an area with poor service and didn't think much of it. An hour later, still, no service. This time I went outside where I know I have good 4G service and nothing for 5 minutes. I enabled airplane mode and disabled it, still nothing. Turned the phone off and back on as a last resort. Still nothing. I ended up finishing the day with wifi calling as that still worked. Sometime later my phone began receiving service again so I thought it was a fluke issue.
Then, just yesterday the same thing happened. This was when I rebooted my phone (which bypasses the fastboot feature) and service was restored right away. I called T-mobile and they said there weren't any network issues in my area and they had never heard of this issue before on the Amaze.
So, this is where I'm asking if anyone has heard of this before. I'm running a stock ROM and it hasn't been rooted. Thanks for any comments!
This might help just a touch. I do live in an area with decent service but my couch and bedroom are deadzones for some odd reason. I bought these signal boosters for 2 bucks figuring "what the hell, I'll give it a shot". No more dead zones, and data went from E to G. Not a miracle worker but for a couple bucks it keeps a signal at least.

Wireless Coverage
I have 2 brand new Amaze 4G for a few months now and had no problem with the coverage. I know the coverage is good with full signal bars and have not found any issue with coverage.
Sometimes, different phones have different received signal sensitivity. Also depends on user behavior. If you are always using a handsfree device (cable or BT) and your phone is in a bag, then your coverage is reduced by your action. The best coverage you can ever get is when you have line of sight (unobstructed) to the cell towers.
There are a few issues with your problem:
1-Poor inbuilding coverage
2-Poor coverage in your area
3-Network optimization issue
4-Hardware issue
If you are going from 1 bar to no bar, then most likely you have coverage issue. You lost signal since the level is already very low.
If you are going from full bar to no bar, you might have hardware or network optimization issue. Try your phone is the city or area with known good coverage first. If the behavior persists, then you have phone problem.
I used to manage wireless network for carriers.
same issue
I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Red x, no signal except wifi, in places where signal is not normally an issue. Battery pull doesn't work, return to signal seems arbitrary. Had the same thing happen with my Desire. I have no answers, but you are not alone.
Yup, it happened with my first Amaze. I got it back in January and started playing with it - rooting, custom ROMs, etc. Then later that day, the signal just died on me. I thought I must've screwed something up, so I flashed back to everything stock. No luck. I waited for half a day, then it randomly started working again at night.
You probably noticed tha tI said that happened with my first amaze. That's because after that signal issue, I discovered that my camera stopped working. I returned it to T-Mobile and they sent me another one. This one is working great though.
Well thank you for all the input so far. Id like to say that this isn't my first cell phone and I'm not new to weak or poor signal areas, especially from T-mobile. I was using my phone at work at the time, which has anywhere from no signal to 3 bars depending on where you are. This wasn't one of the cases that I was standing in a dead zone when I checked my phone. I had no signal for several hours, including over 30 minutes of standing outside trying everything I could think of. I have had excellent signal outside in the past, exactly where I was "Hiding". I got the Amaze because I was tired of playing with my old HD2 and having to work around bugs and possibly not receiving calls. So far, I'm not happy that the radio seems to quit responding all together and leaves me without a phone (minus the wifi calling but I'm not always around a hotspot).
I also experienced a dramatic signal loss at home, going from full signal strength to maybe one bar right around the time that I first had issues. I don't know if this is related or if this is a completely different thing.
I am 99% sure this is an error with the phone - probably software related with the radio driver(s) or radio firmware. I guess I will try taking it back to T-mobile and seeing if they could exchange it for a new one. I was just really wanting to avoid that as I finally got my phone setup how I like it. Again, Thank you for the input and let me know if you are having the same problem or if you know of a solution.
I am on my third Amaze and also tried a Galaxy SII X due to the same problem at my home. Even the Samsung did the same thing. In my house and especially in the driveway, the signal varies wildly between -85dbm to as low as -111dbm. The frustrating thing is once it loses the signal, it doesn't seem to reacquire it without a reboot.
I'm with Telus, and they said they will check on it, but I'm not holding my breath. In my immediate area, outside my house, the signal isn't great, but it will usually hang on. I have been to different cities, and all has been well with it. Coming from a rock steady 2G Touch Pro II, I am disappointed as well..
I am new here to this site, but I am having a similar problem with my Amaze. At work I always have a weak 4G signal, but the last few days it has been gone altogether. I have full phone service (4 bars) but no data. The 4G indicates I have signal, but I can't connect to anything on the web. I called HTC and they had me pull my battery and sim card so they could send a "reset signal" to my phone. After my phone came back up I had faster service than ever, but it only lasted a few minutes and went away again. I am thinking this is a phone issue. Oh, the Amaze is my first Android. My only previous smartphone was my Nokia E71x.
I know if I have WiFi calling selected, an x will show up on my signal if i turn WiFi on. I've personally only had slow data in the area I work. I blame it on the fact that it is a busy corporate park with lots of hotels, cuz my signal is fine elsewhere. Try calling tmobile and seeing if they have known tower issues in your area. I know I had that problem with sprint and they sent me a free airave. Maybe tmobile could do something similar if its.a known problem.

It's most likely a network issue. I get the same thing, it will timeout/refresh the network where it will not get a signal for about 30 seconds a few times per day. I blame the network, since the same thing happened to me with my mt4g

Thank you! This fixed it for me. It was happening only today while I had WiFi enabled, it would turn the mobile radio off completely and the box would be grayed out so I was unable to turn it back on. I had my sim updated today to enable wifi calling so after I read your post, I turned the wifi calling off and the mobile radio signal came back immediately. Strange bug.

I was told It's by design. It saved battery life by not constantly searching for a mobile network it won't use (due to wifi calling). It's not like you can hand off the call to the local network. I do notice that if i start walking outside, once my wifi hits a low signal it logs back on the network.

There is actually an option to specify how the WIFI calling works: either all the time or only when cellular signal is gone. Sounds like you have it set to be on all the time. This means that if you have a good WIFI connection, the cellular radio is shut off and all traffic goes through the WIFI calling app. The other option (which I use) only uses wifi calling when there is no cellular signal.
I have lost cellular signal 3 additional times since my last post. Its not just that I'm in a bad spot and I have no signal for 30 seconds. This goes on for 30 minutes or more - up to several hours. I have found that rebooting the phone fixes it as I believe it completely (as much as possible) removes power from the radio and requires it to be completely re-initiated during the reboot. Simply shutting it off doesn't work as the quickboot is enabled and most likely doesn't perform a complete re-initialization of the radio. My only guess at this point is that there is some kind of possible leftover code from development which never was removed from the radio (this happens more times than not). It could be a timeout or simply causing the radio to hang because of 1. excessive heat generation, 2. excessive power drain, 3. buffer overflow, 4. excessive RF transmit power... In any case, one of those issues could trigger an event in the radio to cause it to simply stop responding.
I am in the process of trying to get T-Mobile to get me a new phone as I am outside of the 30-day window. I have also confirmed it with them that this was not a tower issue.
Thanks

Hmmmm who is dear? Lol.... Ne ways, well first off, I commend you for digging this thread up rather than just starting a new thread without even looking first :thumbup::thumbup: I can't say I've ever seen someone who hasn't even been a member for 1 full day do that. Shoot, I see senior members start new threads or pointless threads without searching first, so good job haha.
Ok, back on topic now, if it's only dropping when you go in your room, then I don't think it's anything wrong with the phone. Not sure who your provider is, but u may be able to call them and have them look up your address and tell you what kind of signal u should get outside your house, and what to expect inside your house. I know t-mobile does at least

Has anyone found a solid solution for this? I was able to pick up a amaze for 50 bucks off of craigslist. But I can't get it to connect to mobile net work. A T-Mobile employee told me to root it, but I'm trying not to cause it's not for me.

Well your situation is a little different than other peoples in this thread if u can't connect al all. Ok wait so first off, it won't connect to a network at all? AND you only paid 50 bucks for it...? Sounds a little fishy to me bud, why did he say he was selling it...?
Next thing, I don't know why a t-mo rep would tell you to root the phone, rooting has no effect on your signal strength or your ability to connect to a network.
And lastly, is the phone a T-Mobile branded amaze owhat carrierr...? and will it not connect at all, period, or can u make calls just not data...?

Sprint Airave and internet speed

Hello everyone,
I just recently received a sprint airave, free of charge. I don't necessarily need it...and the story of how why they sent it is a long one. Anyway, I usually get 25 up and 4-5 mps down with my ISP. I just moved and love the speed compared to my old ISP. I don't want to sacrifice any speed. So my question is, will the sprint airave reduce my downloads or uploads? Is there a certain way to install it to prevent any reduction in speed?
Thanks
No, it does not effect your speeds, even if it does, you wouldn't even notice it. I have an Airrave from sprint, but in my opinion it is not that great, sometimes it does not play well with HTC phones. Every once in a while you will have to tell sprint to reset it to work properly.
Hope that summary gave you the answer you were looking for.

I set one up at our office at work. I think it works very well. Only problem I have with it I will set certain sprint #'s to access it but if I ever reset it some #'s I put in will just vanish off and I have to go in and redo it. I just recently set it to accept all phones cause I was sick of updating the listing. Also will have issues with hand-offs sometimes from the device to the tower it can dump the call.
They tell you to put the device in front of the modem so it is in charge of your network. That wasn't gonna happen with me, it works just fine behind a router I just have QOS enabled for it & some vonage boxes it works just find. I can't tell that it uses any bandwidth then again we have a 40/5 connection so there is plenty to go around. It will increase your 3G speeds a lot but I still use wi-fi. One of our guys has a pixie which doesn't have wi-fi so the repeater is great for that. As long as you have a decent connection your never gonna notice a difference.

If im remembering right, there are some pretty complicated issues with handoff between cell towers and femtocells (like the airave)
Sometimes you will have to dial "*99" in order to find out if you are the airave or tower. Hope you have better luck.

Does any of the custom ROMs solve Network/WIFI issues

I know the custom ROMs have a few nice features and clean up some dead wood.
But do any absolutely Fix any of the network issues?
For the record I'm considering OMJ's or Flipz's.
Some background for my question if you interested.
This phone is really starting to suck (Stock Rooted only, no mods).
I really wanted to hold out for possible S-OFF to try any custom ROMs but the phone is becoming useless without doing something.
Last weekend I used my Wifes EVO 3D (my old phone with MeanROM ICS 2.2 on it).
I Tethered from West of Boston to Central NH (2 hr 20 min drive) with out a glitch.
Phone was running Navigation and WIFI Tethered the whole way.
Not one glitch. I've done it many times. My wifes former Touch Pro 2 and EVO 4G was also just as reliable.
Same trip this weekend with the EVO 4G LTE.
Laptop lost WIFI connection to EVO 4G LTE like 5 times.
Sometimes I could get it back by reconnecting or restarting WIFI Tether.
Other times I had to reboot phone, and other times I had to reboot the Laptop to get it back. It just flat out refused to see the phone any more. Even tried shutting WIFI off on laptop and phone, but no, PC or Phone required a reboot not always the same either.
It was also fairly slow and laggy. Just aweful.
When I leave my house with WIFI on, the EVO LTE phone stays connected to WIFI and gets no data until I shut WIFI off. It works fine if I leave work with WIFI on though.
I know there are patches to remove smartsync in several ROMs but the phone was not going to sleep during most of these issues (Had Nav running).
You would need a ROM where someone actually rewrote some code . That's probably not going to happen till source comes out

That might be true but certainly not always true.
And if it is "code" I must depend on that get fixed it's likely a driver and most developers on XDA don't do drivers.
And that "code" could also be on the Radio Side (where I suspect the real issues are) and that code is never released.
Doing things like enabling the 2nd Core full time (which is enabled on my EVEO 3D) might make things run more stable. I don't know.
Most "code" on my EVO 3D is "stock" it's just borrowed from different phones and some build.prop tweaks.

Just my experience : zero difference in connectivity issues (cellular or WiFi) . Previous 3d and OGEVO both had their issues but in the exact same locations I used them ( work WiFi home WiFi commute cellular) -this thing is just bad comparitively. Wireless N (100Mgps down from Cisco rtr) at office drops CONSTANTLY and even just running l navigation will drop out from suburbs to city ( Chicago ) . Go to Mexico this week and I was there in December and was stunned how well Telcel''s network operated ( very fast 3g no dropped calls - thank god work picks up the tab). New York and San Francisco the week after in which I am very familiar with how my service usually acts so ill have some controls to measure against. Very dissapointing so far LTE can't get here glfast enough- realize I veered slightly off topic but , no, I haven't seen any major difference other than great battery life on Vipers

For the record I am currently using Viper ROM and I currently have absolutely no issues paring the phone to my car via Bluetooth in comparison to the stock ROM where my phone will not hold a bluetooth connection.
Dude, honestly, u need to take your phone back and exchange it. Had the same problem with WiFi dropping constantly, about every 5 seconds. Would go to 3g then WiFi. Sometimes switching settings would help, tried rooting and did numerous roms, fixes, mods, but the problem was still there.
Well, I took my phone back bc I bricked the secure element somehow and my new phone has none of those issues. I believe it is a faulty receiver/radio. Trust me and take it back for a new one before your 30 days is up. U will thank me.

I got my evo this past friday and I've been using my wifi more than my 3G and i haven't had problems. May wanna take it back and have them check it out.

I'm in RI and kept my Evo og just for tethering. If you were satisfied with the 3d, then the lte will seem more effectual in fringe area reception. Though not as good as the OG in my particular area. The og bounces across a bay without issues. Did I just say sprint has shoddy coverage? Whoops. Didn't mean to.
What I'm getting to is that the risk of depending on htc unlock, vs new radios might be worth evaluating.

Thanks for the data point.
I did try calling Sprint and the tech said I need to shut WIFI off when I leave home and work. They were clueless. After I explained to them how it's supposed to work they said I need to have tech look at it.
Yeah I'm sure they can repeat the problems at will. Some days it's fine.
I don't get WIFI drop outs. Biggest problem is it won't let go of the WIFI when I leave home and that locks data up until I toggle the WIFI enable. Leaving work it's fine.
I have put a custom ROM on it now (flipz). And it's running better. But did have to switch it to 2.4Ghz only again. I do like some the custom ROM features and it allows be to better monitor Data (since it show 1x or 3x) and I can do full nandroid backup to compare changes.
However I did see the bouncey thing when you wake it goes to WIFI to 3G to WIFI again and that I believe is a sign of it struggling.
Then I looked into my Router for more settings to play with and learned Bluetooth can interfere with WIFI (i.e. there are settings for it in my router).
I'm 99% sure this is the problem (and may or may not be the phones fault).
This would explain why a "new" phone could fix an issue because each time you pair a bluetooth device it may choose a different channel. Some channels will conflict with WIFI more than others.
It may explain why some people have no issues too. Can depend on your bluetooth devices as well.
I started a seperate thread on this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721196
I'm amazed nobody has responded.
For grins I left Bluetooth off today and it has run flawless. It didn't get stuck on WIFI when I leave home and it always did.
I need to dig into how to check what channel bluetooth is paired on and how I can control what channel is uses.

I think you're onto something... If I leave the house and wifi sticks on, then I normally have to reboot phone before I can connect to wifi again. Simply toggling wifi off and on doesn't work.
So on a whim, I turned off bluetooth. Then turned wifi off and back on, and bam! Connected! Hmmmm....

Weird. I had opposite. Rooted, S-off and flashed MeanROM which really liked but bluetooth on one of my cars that was foolproof on stock became very hard to connect. Went back to stock and connects fine again. Miss the customization and may try again. Was a good exercise putting back to stock if ever need to return phone to Sprint.

What is going on with Sprint Service

As some of you have probably read.
I gave up on the M9, mostly prompted by dropped calls, or calls going straight to voice mail.
I had the M9 replaced and gave it to my wife. It's been near perfect for her, she even dunked it and it's still running great.
My G4 is now doing the SAME thing. Although it has not dropped many calls, tons of calls go straight to voice mail.
Had a very important call this morning and even shutoff LTE, WIFI and Bluetooth and only had 3G on. And it went to voice mail.
The signal is not great, but should be fine for CDMA. Previous generation phones were fine (M8,M7, etc.)
I do see the signal bounce. Where it will be 3-4 bars one minute and none the next. The bouncing can be common in weak LTE (which is definitely weak).
But it's even bouncing with LTE off.
Even at home with two phones in the same location.
My wifes M9 will work, but my G4 will go to voice mail.
Where a couple months ago at home
My wifes M8 will work, but my M9 will go to voice mail.
Could their be something on the account that limits my phones? Like wrong bands or something. Not enabled for Spark but on a Spark Network.
As soon as Verizon gets the LG V10, I'm 99% sure I'm gonna switch. Don't know what else to do.
I don't really care for how locked down Verizon is, but I need a working phone.
This problem happens at multiple locations.
Any ideas appreciated.
I know this isn't specifically an M9 issue, but I know their are more experienced folks around here that might know something.
It is related to M9 TYPE phones though (Spark Generation 2-ish phones). It started when I switched from M8 to M9.
Upgrading my wife from M7 to M8 went fine and from M8 to M9 went fine.
Upgrading me from M8 to M9 went south and from M9 to G4 went south.
All SIM cards cam with respective phones.
All bought new.
All S-Off and/or rooted.
I may have found the answer. Read this !! It has to do with having WIFI on and phone going to sleep. Which is exactly what happens on G4 and M9.

I disagree...I'm using the opposite settings that he is saying to use & I've never had this issue (that I know of). I don't make alot of outgoing calls...most are incoming...I also have my work cell fwd'd to my M9 so I don't have to carry 2 devices...I'm on Wifi a majority of the time, I get calls & texts all the time w/ no issues...the only thing I have checked in Advanced WiFi is Wifi Optimization, Keep Wifi on during sleep set to always
Fix
------
The fix is to not have Wifi on when the phone is idle/sleep. change your Wifi settings below to the screenshot below.
Settings -- > Wifi -- > MORE -- > Advanced -- > "Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep = Never"
I also have "Network notification" and "Always allow scanning" enabled.

Sprint did (in my opinion) a very poor job with how it handles calls. One of my favorite phones was the evo LTE which not only could do LTE and a call at the same time but if you weren't in 4G it could do SV-DO and work on 3G which it actually worked very well. Especially at the time when I had that phone, I hardly had 4G anywhere so being able to use data at the same time on 3G was great.
That said, that feature didn't stick around long. The m7 had a separate radio for LTE & 1X meaning you could surf at the same time because it had separate radios. This couldn't do 3G which was a step backwards however 4G was becoming more mature.
Fast forward to today and with your modern tri-band device while it supports multiple bands that the previous phones didn't, most people have no idea what that means they usually assuming if it's a 4G phone well then it's just that how is any different.
I have had plenty of people complain to me about calls going straight to voicemail or signal issues. Rather than having separate radios, Sprint just uses CSFB Circuit Switched fallback so when a call comes in, it lets the phone know via LTE and immediately switches back to 1X to grab the call. That said it's by no means perfect especially in a bad signal LTE area can cause issues. When I'm at home or work I usually set my phone to CDMA only since I have wi-fi there is no advantage to be on LTE, causes issues with calls coming through and wastes battery. Most users have no idea about what is actually going on so it's hard to explain to a friend why when a caller calls them, the caller might here 5-6 rings before the phone even goes off. Sprint's LTE signal frankly sucks in most places I go, even right next to the tower sometimes you won't get full signal.
Anyway if your wifes phone works fine in the same spot as your G and you are doing all your testing off of LTE and still having issues that tells me either you have a bad radio again or something is provisioned wrong. I would put the phone back to stock, reset the radio and reactive the phone then do some testing with calls off LTE again. If you still have issues at the point, I would swap the phone. My M9 is pretty good with CSFB, I haven't had too many issues with it but really I think it's a very poor solution how it works especially when your in a fridge LTE area with the phone bouncing in and out of LTE.
Once the network goes all LTE (god knows how long that will take) I think this will be a thing of the past but for now CSFB now it's here to stay. I don't see Sprint ever going back to separate radios like the previous gen phones as they would more likely be focused on voice over LTE instead.

It has not failed in 5 days since I flipped it.
It may depend on the WIFI it's on, IPV6 etc. I don't know.
I think this may have started the same time MMS started failing for SOME folks if WIFI was enabled. Disabling IPV6 on WIFI was a work around (which is disabled on your ROM).
But not everyone had this issue and depended on their router.
So their is weird sh$t happening due to Android changes.
I think this issue is related and not everyone runs into it.
I have had WIFI Calling setup, but disabled it on both M9 and G4 (because it's extremely unstable on every phone I've tried).
Not sure if that is part of it. Like my account knows it's WIFI Calling capable. But my wifes never had WIFI Calling setup, she also does not run WIFI at work. She's never had the problem (even with the same phone I had problems with).
Again I don't know the exact details, and this is not a fix. But disabling WIFI when asleep seems to have stopped it problem. But I need to go a bit longer to be 100% sure.
I've seen similar threads on many phones and carriers and many start off saying "Problem started with 5.x.x OTA update".
I think I was close when I thought it was the optimizer. And before I found that thread, I was testing with WIFI completely off (which also worked).
Something is a miss and there may be more "options" to cause the issue.

I know about the call switching for LTE and it sucks. But that was not it. I tried CDMA only and it did not fix it.
Disabling WIFI while sleeping is still working. Not one call has gone to voice mail at work in over a week. It used to happen 2-3 times a day.
I HATE disabling wifi while asleep though. I'd like to still get to the bottom of it.
I think some how it is doing something over WIFI when a call comes in, if WIFI is available. But when the WIFI is in power save mode something gets messed up.
The problem started on OMJ's ROM with IPV6 disabled. So it's not that.
The only thing common is Lollipop, Sprint and my WIFI locations (and a modern single radio triband phone).
I'd like to try getting "WIFI Calling" capability off my account. I think once you set it up once, it's enabled automatically on my account.
I will also say, if I do enable WIFI Calling, it's terribly unreliable. Maybe that's a hint.
The WIFI signal is solid and no issues using WIFI itself.

Having Wi-Fi calling provisioned on your account is just that, it just means if you enable wi-fi calling that your phone has the green light to connect and move forward with the server. That said if you keep wi-fi calling off the fact that it is still provisioned on the account doesn't affect anything at all if the service is not active.
If you only solution is disabling wi-fi while sleeping something in the rom is borked. Return the phone to 100% stock, hard reset it (including the radio) then try using it again. While again CSFB isn't perfect, if the phone is CDMA only you just shouldn't be having this kind of issue. If your not having issues with other phones in the same area with calls going to vm, you know it's not the network and something with the phone. If it does this on 100% stock after a re provision then you have a borked radio and the phone should be swapped. Which I have seen borked radios before, the wi-fi radio in the phone is totally separate from the CDMA/LTE radio.

Did that, returned to stock, same issue. Got Another M9, same issue, got a LG G4 same issue. Just signed up for T-Mobile (have not canceled Sprint yet). Two LG V10's. T-Mobile just announced a huge expansion on their network to cover areas that I needed with LTE (Sprint roams 1x Lakes Region and North in NH).

Not a bad play, Sprint's Network has come along way in the past few years but with CSFB and a crappy LTE signal is most places they still have a lot of work to do. One of the reasons I stay is my plan and they are pretty friendly towards rooting/unlocking for the most part.

The V10 was awesome. T-Mobile was extremely good at My work, My wifes work, Home and all places between. Speeds were 4-8x faster (seriously) than Sprint. Simultaneous Voice and Data VoLTE.
But what the map showed up in NH, didn't match reality at all. Sprint is pretty dismal too, but they at least Roam and you can get 1x or 3G from either US Cellar or Verizon.
But T-Mobile had nothing in the areas Sprints Roams. So I'm sticking with Sprint for now.
I've concluded it's a combination of weak locations, the requirement to switch from LTE to CDMA for calls, and something around that is complicated by WIFI while asleep. Shutting off WIFI or shutting it off while asleep definitely improved things but didn't eliminate it completely. Both phones (M9 and G4) are Qualcomm chips and probably have similar Radio Firmware. But it's overly complicated due to Sprint being a bit behind the ball with VoLTE.
I agree Sprint is not quite so tight on locking things down. T-Mobile is the least locked down, then Sprint, then AT&T then Verizon. I know Verizon would perform flawlessly. But the combination of expense and being so locked down keeps me away. T-Mobile price was really good 2 lines 10GB each, with Carry Over and free Music/Video streaming. And the V10 already had TWRP on day one. The G4 on Sprint does not have TWRP and probably never will. It is rootable, barely.
I convinced my Sister to switch to T-Mobile because she wanted an iPhone and I recommended she not Jail Break it. But she wanted Tether (I was rooting Androids on Sprint for her). She is very happy with T-Mobile. And she generally stays in Eastern MA.
We'll see what HTC does this next time around. But they really need to step up their game. The reception issue really isn't an "HTC" issue. It's a Qualcomm/Sprint issue in my opinion. It's a kludge and I think Sprint is the only one with this kludge.
