GPS seems not to work - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

about a month a go I loaded a custom rom
[ROM][PORT][4.2.1][AOKP/CM] Vanilla RootBox v3.6 [31/01][Per-App-DPI][PIE]
since than when i go to google maps or navigation it says waiting for location and than after a few mins it says your current location is currently unavailble. when i check the location acccess option the wi-fi and mobile network location is disabled. when I enable it it does seem to find where i am but uses data to keep updateing. so I disabled it. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get the GPS opetion to work and find me so I can use the navigation again.
thanks.

cell location in google maps/latitude

Does anyone know how to enable the Verizon Touch Pro (VX6850) to update "My Location"/Latitude in google maps? Searching the google help i found that if you go to Menu --> Help --> About there is "myl: N/A"
according to google help this tells you if you are able to use cell towers to triangulate where you are. Is there a way to enable this?
Just enable the GPS and do it the REAL way
what if you are indoors and cannot get a gps signal like 99% of my day?
Yeah, seriously. I KNOW "My Location" works on other devices (saw it work on a blackberry with my own eyes in a verizon store) and I updated to the new rom that supposedly enabled gps (and hopefully the "my location" functionality) and I enabled "location based services" in the options dialog of the phone settings menu item. and it still doesn't work. Any guesses as to if this is a Google problem? A verizon problem? or an HTC (PDC) problem? any registry settings we know of related to location based services? anyone? Thread bump?
I wonder the same but for a different reason, I use Navizon and it records the cell tower data and gives me points for it, I don't get access to it with the touch pro, only to wifi.

Location on maps using Gtab and TNT4.4

Does location work on GTAB and TNT4.4?
It hasn't for me. I think the app only uses network and gps to get location. I could be wrong but that is the only connection missing.

There is no GPS within the gTab, so location cannot be automatically determined as it might be on a smartphone. Near as I can tell, some have worked that out via tethering a smartphone or attaching an external GPS via USB, but I haven't figured this out yet.
I just tried tetherGPS from the market and it worked for me. I have a Nexus One running Cyanogen and it comes with mobile hot spot enabled. I turned on my mobile hot spot, connected the gtab via wifi and ran navigation on the gtab. Worked perfectly! I used the lite version but if I can figure a way to mount the gtab in the car then I will pay for it, no question about it.
i have used BlueGps and have my bluetooth gps connected. But google maps tells me to enable "My Location". Where do i find that option ? Im using TnT LIte 4.4
from your home screen:
menu (settings) --> location & security
check USE GPS SATELLITES
also be sure to enable 'mock locations'
menu (settings) --> Applications --> Development
check ALLOW MOCK LOCATIONS
That's how I'm getting messed up. I have no option under location & security for GPS. I do have the option for mock locations.
No location services
Me neiher. Is it something to do with having changed the ROM to TNT lite?

Hey man, I have the WiFi version and I noticed that the stock Navigation app sometimes has problems finding my location compated to my Samsung phone. I was on the road last week traveling between France and Germany and on some occasions I had to use phone to get directions because the tablet would simply not get any GPS signal. On other occasion it would work. It seems to be pretty random. I'll post if I find more about this.
Hi thanks for the info, ive been messing around with it some more since i made this thread and this morning i was finally able to get a GPS signal and get google maps to zoom in on my current location but i had to go into settings > location services and disable Google's location service and turn off my wifi so it was just the GPS running. But after doing so i re-enabled the settings and turned WiFi back on and it worked fine lol.
maybe its just a bug in the software i don't know but your right it does seem spotty at the best of times.

Ive seen this as well. I also noticed the weather widget never updates location despite being set to auto refresh.

[Q] Android won't use geo location of my wifi

Hey,
so I've got this weird problem where Android apparently ignores the location of my wifi. But let me explain:
Whenever I'm at home google now suggests that my current location is not where I currently am but rather 10 to 15 miles away from my home address.
That is kind of annoying because I get wrong weather updates, location based reminders will not work on my home address and my location history is a complete mess.
Android primarily uses these three methods for checking on your location:
- gps
- cell towers
- wifi
am I right?
So I did some tests:
1. Testing gps
In location settings I checked "Device only" (so that it would only use gps for determining my location) and opened maps
-> works flawlessly
2. Testing wifi
In location settings I checked "Battery saving" (only wifi and mobile networks). And activated airplane mode to ensure that it could not use mobile networks for location.
Reboot (any kind of "location cache" should then be wiped, I guess).
-> works flawlessly
3. Testing cell towers (mobile networks)
In location settings I checked "Battery saving" (only wifi and mobile networks) and then disabled wifi. In advanced wifi settings I unchecked "Scanning always available" (so that it could not scan for wifi networks even though I disabled wifi).
Reboot (any kind of "location cache" should then be wiped, I guess).
-> does not work flawlessly. It determines the wrong location (that google now always uses).
I live in a more rural part of the country so it makes perfect sense that mobile networks cannot determine my exact location, but why would Android ignore the wifi location (as we have seen, it knows where my wifi is located, otherwise it could not have shown me my correct location in test 2), when I'm signed in on the wifi network?
I tested this on two different devices (Moto X stock / HTC One S with CM 11).
Is there anything I could do?
*bumping
No one knows?
Could someone (who preferably lives on countryside, lol) try to reproduce this or tell me if this is how android is supposed to work (this wouldn't make any sense to me, though).
// This is the right board for this kind of question, isn't it? If not, feel free to move this thread :>
*bump
I still have no idea why this is happening.
If this is the wrong board please tell me or move the thread.
Have you ever had a GPS lock while being connected to the WLAN network? I would assume Google learns the MAC addresses and WLAN SSIDs and correlates them to your location ...

Yes. I'm using maps quite frequently (with gps enabled ofc).
But I am pretty sure google already knows the correct location of my wfi, since when I activate airplane mode and check "Battery saving" (only wifi and mobile networks are being used for location) in location settings, my correct location is determined. Since the airplane mode is activated it means that my phone can only use wifi for determining my location.
But as soon as I disable airplane mode my location is wrong again.
So I would conclude that, although google knows the correct location of my wifi, it just prioritizes mobile networks for some reason. Which is driving me insane.

This is still bugging me. I mean I can't be the only one.
*bamp
The problem is still existent and is bugging me.
The forums look different now.
*bomp
I wish someone knew what causes this behavior.
*bemp
Even after all this time the problem still exists.

So I guess there is no solution?
Anyway, I will keep bumping this thread but less frequent.

Allow location access without GPS on Android 10?

Hi,
I have a Xiaomi Mi 8 SE running MIUI11 (Android 10), rooted, TWRP equipped, bootloader unlocked. (Carrier: Telenor HU, but I don't think it matters.)
Not too long ago, on Android 9 (MIUI 10) I could allow applications to access my approximate location without GPS, using mobile network. Even that required tinkering because, for some reason, only in Google Maps could I access a menu, I think in Google Locations, that turned on location access and then this permission stuck for all other applications even after uninstalling Google Maps.
Now on Android 10 the only thing I have is a combined "Location access" switch that toggles GPS as well, and this is the only one to toggle GPS by the way, see attached screenshot. What I want is allow location access for apps from whatever source they have. If GPS is turned off, use the mobile network.
Is there any way to enable that?
(I'm a software developer, so I don't get scared if I need hacking.)
Thanks.
