Plex is a must have app on N10 - Nexus 10 General

This app is just amazing, I have made a server on plex for my 1tb hard drive and can easily watch movies on my nexus 10 from any where. At home, I just connect the n10 to my tvand stream the movies from the plex server to my n10 through WiFi which then shows it on my HD TV. The cool part is that I use my nexus 4 as plex remote through the app
$5 app, but totally worth it

I completely agree. It's a fantastic application. Bought it a long time ago and it continues to receive updates. One of the best apps you can drop money on!

How does it compare to the XBMC app? As far as hardware decoding?

Huh? Unless OP works for Plex or gets a commission on the whopping $5 the app costs he's most likely sharing something s/he finds useful with others which is more than anyone can say about your snarky retort. Plex happens to be a great tool for sharing video over your network or for accessing your network via Wi-Fi or 3/4G while traveling. For the latter it transcodes based on the available bandwidth. It's also pre-installed on LG TVs and is certified to run on Samsung SmartTVs. You can also share your media library (and vice versa) with friends that use Plex.
Here are some pics of it on an N2 and a link to a discussion in their forum.

Absolutely right there.I have 2 tb of movies, pictures, songs, etc,and I can easily view them out of he house/ country on my mobile devices. I have also given my account info to my family members and friends from different parts of the world. I did not get paid or anything to advertise, been using poles since 2009

I haven't tried plex but I'd imagine it has hardware decoding that works fine, but if I'm not mistaken its just a light client. With XBMC you're getting the full XBMC that you get on the desktop or whatever other platform. Having said that I haven't run it on my nexus 10 yet and I'm not sure if there's a build with hardware accel for it but there probably is one out there (Unfortunately the xbmc.org build does not have it), but I run a build on my android g-box midnight tv box and it works great.

XBMC works great on the N10, the recently released Archos Video also runs great but is a little light on configurability, they're actively working on it though.

plex was confusing
i open port forwardign for IP cams before but cant get it to open ports for this thing to work when im on the road and want to access home from mobile

Plex is great. aMPdroid with Media Portal is good too, and free. Plex is much easier to setup and better for sharing with other people. Roku's even have a Plex app for accessing your media servers. The upside of aMPdroid is you can use external players, and it's free. If I didn't want to share my media with anyone I would stick with aMPdroid because Media Portal is much better on desktop/HTPC than Plex, using external players is very useful, and remote access can be done through secure vpn etc. You can access files remotely with aMPdroid just like Plex, and even stream TV, it is just harder to setup for your friends and family, and there is no iOS support.

Yes, both Plex and aMPdroid stream mkv files with audio. Every once in awhile a file won't play in Plex but you can always find a way to play files with an external player with aMPdroid.

[APP][HACK] Media Share (Stream media to PC, etc)

Here's a Media Share app from the system dump of the MyTouch 4G by clink. eVil pointed out the name of the Twonky.apk so I could find it.
Tested so far on my Enom 2.13.2 hybrid ROM and streamed to my Windows 7 PC and video's played but with no sound using Windows Media Player. Music streamed good!
I'd thought I'd share my findings here. Don't know if it will work on other ROM's, so test it. Have yet to test on my PS3.
To test and install put on SD Card and use Astro to open.

Orb Live will do both for you...
the PC side is free (and you can stream to other PCs).
The native android app is in the market.
I think you can stream your media through the browser on the phone now that we have flash though. And then it'd be totally free...
mm Nice
I got streaming video/music/pics working from TVersity to my Nexus One browser... not bad through 3G either.. If anyone need directions PM me..

Performance wise they're about the same, but Audiogalaxy has a better ui giving a it a cooler look and smooth feel
Doesnt help
INSTALLED SETUP YADDA YADDA YADDA doesnt recognize alot of music files in my music folder for example i have 10 files from ace frehley only took 6 as recognized left out other 4 im sure its a good app but until it can recognize all songs not worth the trouble uninstalling
I've been using Audiogalaxy for a couple months now. I love it. I have almost 200 gigs of music, and its really convenient to have it with me anywhere. I'll get the occasional skip on 3G or edge, but its absolutely perfect on wifi.

so how do u get it to actualy recognize all 200gigs of music I doubt it recognises every single song and if it does howd u do that
Why would it need to recognise the songs ???
It takes every music that you tell it too and allow you to listen to it anywhere while your computer is on and connected to the internet
I'm using it with 120GB of music and it even work with messed up names and japanese ones...

But is there any way to have a cache/offline listening?
Open source?
I was wondering if this is an open source project. I was thinking of implementing some more codecs to the app or have custom bit rate support based on the type of network you're using.
Is there something similar to audiogalaxy for UNIX system?

edna is good but it always cut out half way through songs, even when I was on same wifi my server is on. edna dot sorceforge dot com I think.
now I use gnump3d. Very easy to setup and run as a service at boot. streams over http so you browse your library with your phone browser and it generates an m3u playlist when you click a song, or you can play all songs in a directory. browser opens up whatever ur music player is for steaming. Lets you require a password for base dir, all dirs, or none. Personally I don't use a pw just run it on an uncommon port and block all traffic other than my phone's ip with iptables or another firewall.
Great work!
By far the best interface out there... Impressive web application as well. Easily one of my favorite apps and I've only been using it for about 10 minutes. Setup was a breeze less than 2 minutes and I'm streaming my library to my phone. I would kill for a similar app that streamed my movies! TALKING MURDER HERE!
Keep up the good work!

[Q] Feeling like a red-headed stepchild

So has this happened to anyone else?
You're exploring the handful of apps on your 3D that you haven't even gotten a chance to look at yet, and you find several that seem really cool, albeit a tad repetitive (here I'm thinking Dock, Media Share, Connected Media..etc.) and you think "wow, awesome, I can stream movies from this phone to my other devices" or "wow, awesome, I can transfer HDMI video from this phone to other devices"....
..and then you realize that to do ANY of these cool things, you'll need either for the other device (e.g., your PC) to be DLNA compatible, or else you'll need to go out and buy an HDMI cord...or else a docking station.
I guess this post is 1/2 complaint and 1/2 question, but to be fair I should ask the question before I complain too much: do I HAVE to have a DLNA/HDMI cable/Dock station to do some/most of these cool functions? I mean obviously I can copy/paste files onto other devices--or even doing so wirelessly using bluetooth, Samba, etc..---but it seems like the coolest functions all require stuff I don't have, and I guess I'm especially confused about DLNA since my laptop is a dell from last September...seems new enough to have supported DLNA...
Alternately, is there a workaround for DLNA? A program or device or add-on I can use to make my laptop compatible?
OK I guess that's my rant, sorry and thanks for listening...
I'm no DLNA expert, but I think that any PC/Laptop running Windows that has WIFI can support DLNA, I'm pretty sure its just a matter of having the software.
Also you should be able to send data to your TV through a XBOX 360 or Playstation 3, I believe they both support DLNA.
panamaniac said:

All you have to do to make your computer work with DLNA is to go into windows media player, make sure WMP is in full screen, then in the tool bar click stream, then make sure "allow remote control of my player" is selected, and "automatically let devices play my media" is selected. then click" more streaming options" and see if there are any devices found, then make sure none are blocked. Now your done.
EDIT: make sure your all your devices are on the same wifi network for this to work

There's really only two major services for streaming, Airplay (Apple) and DLNA (Everyone else). You've got plenty of options as mentioned above including any windows device, ps3, etc.
Awesome ill try once my power comes back on ...thanks!!

Scotbot this is great! Now I can stream my media from my phone to my windows media player--very nice! I followed your steps, and then went into media share and enabled certain folders to be shared, and voila!
I guess the only better thing would be if I could actually use "Connected Media" to share with WMP--b/c then the phone would be the controller from what I understand. As it is, Media Share simply lets WMP access my phone, but Connected Media actually lets me play a movie on my phone that then automatically streams to other devices...I'm guessing that actually requires legit DLNA...?
Thanks for the post! I can now send 2D videos and photos to my laptop and my Samsung LCD TV! Works great!!!

You'll not need any option.
Buy ezcast, it's 15$ dongle and with ezcast app you'll be more than satisfied.
I'm using it on all my devices (Z1, N7, XU...)and I'm planning to use it on TS.
I have cast screen option on Nexus 7 and it can't detect dongle but as I said - ezcast app is doing great job and.
Literally - plug and play...

There are quite a few dongles that apparently support eZcast, however does this work much the same way as Chromecast works where you only use your phone as a remote control... where as miracast is actually mirroing your device screen instead of just syncing the Casting Dongle to play the same content from where you left off?

5 Very Useful Apps For Android TV

5 Very Useful Apps For Android TV
Android TV is pretty great when you're using it with YouTube, Netflix, Hulu or if you're casting stuff from your phone. However you might have noticed that it's lacking a lot of interesting apps in its watered down version of the Play store. You'll skim through it really quick, realize there is nothing good and then you'll back out. Before you stick a fork in an electrical outlet due to disappointment, how about I show you some of these useful Android TV apps that don't get a whole lot of attention.
Sideload Launcher - Android TV
Most of us probably find ourselves sideloading a lot of apps onto Android TV to makeup for the lack of ones available on the Play store. Since the Android TV launcher only displays apps downloaded from the Play store, you can only access sideloaded apps through your settings. That's garbage. Fear not, Sideload Launcher takes care of that problem by replacing the stock launcher so you can see all of your apps.

[Root] TV Boot
I don't know why Android TV does not have a restart option. I always find myself in a situation where I need to restart my nexus player, so I have to get up and travel across my seemingly endless living room to unplug it. I had both my legs replaced with some really flimsy hollow plastic ones that collapse under my own weight whenever I try to use them. I should stop volunteering for those medical trials. Anyways the point is that the TV Boot app will let you restart or shutdown Android TV from your phone. That's really all there is to it. This will work on rooted devices only.
Download
Mirror Beta
Ever head of ClockworkMod? Of course you have. You've probably used their custom recovery at some point while modifying your phone. You've probably never heard of their Mirror app. This app lets you cast your Android screen to Fire TV, Chromecast or Apple TV. It also works as a screen recorder which comes in handy. It's one of the best apps for screen casting, especially if you have to use both an Apple TV and A Chromecast regularly.
Download
Notifications for Android TV
Notifications on your Android TV is a great way to broadcast to a room full of people that you're fighting with your girlfriend. This app will let you push any notifications that you'd receive on your phone right to your TV. You can scroll through every notified message on the Android TV in fullscreen mode. You can even change the settings individually for each application.
Download
Santi: Instagram on Android TV
One of the big social media apps that is missing entirely on Android TV in instagram. With Santi, you'll be able to login with your account and browse the photos from the people you follow. The only feature this is missing the is ability to like posts or follow/unfollow users. Aside from that it's got everything you need!

I think what you'll need for that is an app that streams live TV. These apps do exists but they'll only work through your TV provider. So if I have Comcast TV, I can download the Comcast app and get live TV that I can stream to my Nexus player. Check to see if your TV provider has an Android compatible app that lets you live stream TV.

I have a great experience to use Android TV with YouTube. I would like to share another new Android TV app here:
Steam Link:
It is one of the top additions at Google Play Store in May 2018, through which user can stream from the Desktop or PC to Android device. It means, users can stream games directly from TV up to 4K Resolutions at 60 fps.
Tnx for the info
