[GUIDE] How to run a live Ubuntu session to obtain S-Off - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

A common theme I seem to see around here is those who want to S-Off but have the wrong OS. I'm not sure why this is a problem as the unlimited.io team lays out the linux option pretty clearly, but yet still many complain of having the wrong OS..So, here you go. I'll try to lay it out as simply as I can for those who maybe just don't understand.
This is the set up for building a bootable USB drive.
First off, go here and download the latest Ubuntu Desktop ISO image :
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?release=latest&bits=32&distro=desktop&status=zeroc
Now download Universal USB installer from here :
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.2.4.exe
Ensure that your USB drive is Fat16/Fat32/NTFS formatted. The USB installer is very easy to use. Just select your ISO and your flashdrive and click install. It does all the work.
Once the drive is completed safely eject your flash drive and shut down your PC. You need to set your PC to boot from USB. This method might be different for you than it was for me. My laptop I tap F9 while booting. You will have to check into this for your particular machine.
Once you have the the USB booting you will be presented with a few options. Just pick Run Live (I think it's the first and default option). This will boot you into a fully fuctional Linux 32bit desktop. Just what you need to S-OFF! From here just go to the Unlimited site and follow their directions to the letter. Do all this and you should be S-Off in about an hours time.
If this is laid out somewhere else, Mods feel free to delete. If you found it to be helpful, hit the thanks. Be well fellow tweakers.
P.S. This makes no changes to your PC. Once done shut down, remove the pen drive, and boot normally to Windows.

You may want to change the title of your thread. I was not expecting this at all when I opened it up. I was expecting a question. Maybe something like 'How to get Ubuntu to obtain S-Off' or something of that nature.
Just my opinion.
Thanks!

Well, me too..but my machine is Windows 7 64bit and after all the warnings I didn't want to chance any screw ups. After running the live Ubuntu session I was amazed at how easy it was. Figured I'd share the love for those who may not understand how easy it really is.

This should be common sense for those used to Linux but I forgot and it took me a while to figure out:
Make sure you are running the Racun tools from a drive that is Linux-formatted (using ext3 or ext4 for example). Otherwise, you will not be able set the proper permissions and you may encounter errors like I did. * facepalm *

I just ran it through Windows 7 64 bit with no Linux...it was easy as pie.

I ran mine using Windows 7 64-bit. No issues
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

Yup, another Win7 64bit user here. I've obtained s-off on both of my Evo LTEs using that setup. Went perfectly smooth and I didn't have to run anything twice or do anything manually. Was like it was a made for Win7 64bit!!
That said, it is super easy to make a LiveCD. I have a LiveCD and have used it to boot in to Ubuntu multiple times. I just wanted to see how far along it would get. I was pleasantly surprised that it finished, and was using successful as well!! After one Evo LTE was a success, I ran it on the second one as well!

It's good to hear so many success stories using 64bit..with all the options out there I really can't see any reason for anyone in these forums to not S-off. The information and help is here.

I actually used Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit. Everything fine except for step 14. My device was not being recognized. I used Ubuntu (just for step 14) and bingo!

Live usb works but last I checked Unlimited did not support live usb so if you run into problems they will be very reluctant to help

Correct! The last time I checked as well, Team Unlimited does not support this method. I believe that it's due to your system's response speeds. When it's reading from a USB Stick/Drive it will be slower than when reading from a disc. I could be totally off base here, as this is just my own thoughts and I haven't heard Team Unlimited say. I'm simply relating my response to the reason 64bit isn't supported. People were saying that the Team just didn't want to take the time to test 64bit systems, which is completely incorrect!! The drivers needed to achieve s-off simply don't function properly on 64bit systems (and take longer to react, if I'm remembering this correctly).
***********
Disclaimer: Just because myself and others have been successful using 64bit does NOT mean that everyone, or anyone else for that matter, will have success using a 64bit system. If you are not comfortable with your phone messing up during the process and no one being willing to help/assist you then do NOT use Team Unlimited's tools on a 64bit system! Team Unlimited will not assist you if you're using a 64bit system (and yes, they WILL be able to tell). As long as you comply to their simple requests, if you need their help at any point (before, after, or during) use of their tools, then Team Unlimited will happily assist you on their IRC channel!
***********
I say this because I don't want anyone getting in to a situation with their phone where they get stuck, confused, or anything, and are not able to go directly to the developer of the tools for help! I really just want everyone to have a good experience with their Evo LTE and wish everyone good luck in everything/anything they do with their Evo LTE!! I remember my first Android experience, so I know what it's like to be new to Android and not fully understanding all of the terminology, how the operating system works, or what system pieces rely on what to function properly. While I had been unlocking and flashing WinMo phones for a while, Android is a different animal and could be a little overwhelming in the beginning. Plus, think of it like this - the more that people enjoy this phone then the more they will tell a friend, or someone will simply overhear them talking about it and become intrigued themselves. Thus, increasing Androids user base(and hopefully hurting Apple ) and maybe even improving HTC's profits!!

I didn't realize that USB was not supported. After checking the site again I noticed that it indeed mentions a live CD but doesn't talk about using USB. I'm going to ask a mod to remove or close this thread due to this coming to my attention. I don't want anyone having issues at my hands.

No rooting with Windows 8!

Dammit Dammit Dammit! lol I have had the Dev preview on another SSD since the day it launched, and guess what happens? My Win7 Ultimate SSD crashed, so I feel all high and mighty I start diving into Win8 for real instead of just playing around and BAM Moto Drivers don't work with Win8 yet because they "Don't recognize the OS". My computer basically told me to get ****ed and that I can't root my brothers phone. I refuse to go back to Win7, guess I will go play on someone else computer!
Just thought I would give you guys a heads up, in case you wanted to migrate onto the Dev Preview or an Alpha/Beta. This is where it stands right now.
Windows 8 Dev Preview has Windows 7 compatibility mode... Right click the installer and set them to install that way. Let us know if that works....
Nope, I had tried that already.
Damn.... That's a pretty crappy bro... I tried it out on a spare HDD I had for a few days and the whole Metro interface being designed for a touch screen device just got cumbersome and I only tried installing some basic stuff like office, chrome, skype, and other things like that....
Most software works(even processor intensive CAD/Revit, Adobe CS5 products), and I rarely even see the Metro UI, I don't use it for anything. I just have my desktop extended across both screens.
True... I have an old dell lappy I might throw it on there and play with it some more.... Maybe that will make it heat up less....
I had to revert back to Windows 7 (no big deal) because I had trouble SBFing in Windows 8.

Yea, for the same reason, lol. I am not too worried though. I am upgrading to the ReZound on Monday. But, I thought I would post this. I am sure there is someone smart enough to adapt the drivers, or knows another way we are not thinking of.
Could probably always partion the drive and have 7 or xp on another partition...
Hopefully this will be fixed when they decide to release Windows 8.

I have 4 500GB HDD's 1 1TB HDD and 2 256GB SSD's. I have plenty of space for Win7, but after being on Windows 8 there is no going back. Not to mention I don't want to set up an entire system just to root a phone I will only have for 3 more days
I was thinking about trying that other root method because it doesn't say anything about drivers, although, that might just be an obvious given. We will see, and I will let you guys know probably tomorrow. I am a Veteran, got things to do today that don't involve sitting in front of a computer lol.
BTW, Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow Brothers-in-Arms and Veterans alike! RLTW!
No Bueno...
I found elsewhere on the net a solution to windows 8 problem...
Extract the usb drivers from the motorola's driver MSI using Uniextract to a easy to find folder, then go into device manager and find the 'unknown usb device' and manually update drivers by pointing to the drivers you just extracted. Hope all that makes sense....
I should note that while this method has gotten me farther than I had previously, and allowed RSDlite to work SBF'ing my phone back to stock, but it seems ADB doesn't want to play nicely with windows 8. I've tried windows compatability mode, run as admin. no luck so far.
I don't have much of a clue of what I'm talking about but maybe its worth a shot...what if you ran a virtual of 7 inside of 8? Would you be able to use the drivers that way?
Sorry if I woke an older thread. Just curious..

Does anyone think they could help me with a ubuntu install?
I seriously have tried everything i can think of and all it does is boot back into xp
over and over and over.
Its so frustrating. I just want ubuntu
Are you using some form of VM (Virtual Machine) to boot Ubuntu up or are you trying to get it to replace windows altogether?
Im trying to get it so i can choose ubuntu or xp on boot.

i just really dont understand. am i missing something? or have my last 3 computers just been ubuntu incompatible
Hmmm

I don't know if you have tried it this way. I shrank my partition in windows and installed Ubuntu that way. I don't know if that helps you any. I had hell getting the boot loader right though. The easiest possible way i have seen is a clean install with Ubuntu first then install windows.
yea, im not sure your issue, the ubuntu install was way easier than even installing windows.
eh i give up

Sadly my pc isnt built to game, with a 2.4 pentium 4 and a gig of DDR ram i can barely run minecraft. so its no big deal LOL.
That is the specs for a perfect Ubuntu box. Hope you enjoy it. IMO the latest distro sucks compared to its predecessor. I don't like the way we are getting Unity and the likes forced upon us. There is classic gnome but it still is awkward.
I felt the same way when kde4 rolled out (which was pure dog vomit) and I haven't used it since. Linus is now using xfce and I may join him.

(SOLVED) Pretty sure I'm bricked...

Hey everyone. My evo was htc unlocked, but i wanted to get it s-off. so i used to the lazypanda method...and everything was working great. when i reached the 30 second part, i patiently waited 30 seconds, but it kept going. it went all the way to about 900 until i ended the program and did it again. it couldnt detect the device, and now i cant get my evo to turn on. help please!
UPDATE: My worries are over! My phone was indeed bricked, so I installed Linux on my Mac to use the unbrick tool. It was easy to do, but kind of a pain as well. Those who are having trouble and need instructions to unbrick...you've come to the right place Instructions will come shortly.
1. If you're absolutely positive that you are bricked...simply install Linux (Ubuntu) on your Mac or PC. A virtual machine will not work! You must use a CD or USB stick.
2. Once you have installed Linux, download

I don't see the connection between "it won't power up" and being bricked. Are you sure you had/have good power, i.e., plenty of battery left. If you are sure the battery is charged up, hit and hold the power until it comes up, try it. If your not sure about the amount of charge, plug it into your charger and do the same thing, hit and hold the power button, see what happens.
i had about 60% left. but even though it is connected to the usb cable right now, there is no charging light. im assuming that its bricked, therefore it isnt charging

Just for grins, unplug it from the USB (you may have already done this) and try to power it up. I can't see a way that some piece of code would nix(brick) the power, where it would not start up to "something", a loop, error, something.
wont power on guess im bricked
I too am in this boat:/ Any help guys?
Edit: used Lazy Panda's method. Worked perfectly. Typing this from my once bricked EVO.
Plug in phone, check device manager to see if its recognized as qhsusb_dload mode. There a thread in original development covering lazypanda bricks. Need linux, live cd or whatever but it says 100% success so check it out

Well, the method and what not wasn't the same to get me to the issue, although on my last two phones the result of me purchasing another phone was that there was no charge light and it wouldn't turn on. I assumed it was bricked, and I still have these two dead devices on my desk. Neither of them power up or show any signs of being alive. I can leave them on the charger for hours and no heat is generated at all. Everyone just blames it on being a lemon I tried literally everything I could think of, so assume I took every possible available measure to revive them =P(Short of taking it to any repair shops or opening the device up for surgery :3)
I am just sharing my experience, and to say that those things only happened on my htc devices and if you google around for devices not booting and no charge light then you'll see others with similar issues. If you get yours back up and running let me know ^^ It'd be interesting to have hope to bring back my shift/3d. Also good luck!
I had this same scenario earlier. After a while I gave up on waiting so I unplugged it and pressed the power button and volume down (don't ask me why I thought that would work lol) for about 15 seconds and it turned on. I reformatted my sdcard and ran the program again and now i'm SOFF
all u guys, just use the unbrick method http://unlimited.io/lazypanda-s-off-public-beta/evo-4g-lte-unbricker/
Marco while this might be a pain to setup (if your not running linux), you can download virtualbox from Oracle (a Sun product Oracle now owns) and then download and install your flavor of linux in a VM. You will put in a little time configuring linux, but it will get you to the test. Virtualbox is free, its similar to VMware Workstation or Microsoft's Virtual PC. I would go with Ubuntu, also free. What bugs me about your issue is you plug in the charger and you get no charging light. If this is indeed the case, even if you did all of this, how would you even be able to connect to the phone to issue the commands to unbrick it. Good luck.

I believe you have to use the sudo command to run it as superuser... I really dont know much about linux but I did have to create a Ubuntu boot CD to unbrick mine after trying to unlock in Windows.
I had assumed that improper HTC drivers were my problem in Windows but after unbricking I tried the use FeedPanda under linux and got bricked again. After 20+ power pushes and bamboo finding I decided having S-off wasn't that important to me lol.

This is what I first thought..but, anyone in a rom thread has at least HTC Dev unlocked and flashed a recovery via fastboot. No more skill is required to S-Off. I think folks might be afraid of bricking? So I guess that would also raise the question, of all the folks who have S-OFf, how many bricked in the attempt? I bet not many actually hard bricked with no fix.
It so doesn't take much skill to watch a YouTube video and follow along. But throw in the word Linux and most users will cower in fear lol
I'm s-off. I can tell you why most people who are s-on are(I see it over and over again on forums with people questioning obtaining s-off).....because of the list of official requirements for Dirty Racun/Lazy Panda. I know this because I just went through it 2 weeks ago. A lot of people are on Win 7 64 bit and do not want to go through the hassle of creating a boot disk/usb drive for 32 bit or Ubuntu. I myself tried the Ubuntu method but not having ever used that OS I could not figure out opening a terminal within a folder LOL. Luckily my work PC is Win 7 32 bit and I have free time during the day. Sure some people have gotten away with using Win 7 64-bit anyway, but when the creator of the program is telling you if you do that they won't offer any help, it's very off putting. Another weird requirement that snagged me by overlooking it while mid install is the SD card size. Luckily I had an old 2gb card nearby. If I did not I would probably not go out of my way to buy an sd card to just obtain s-off. So in essence having requirements that IMO are outdated compared to what A LOT of people are running these days is why. That said I truly appreciate the work put in for giving us the ability to flash radios.
I am S-OFF. I didn't think I could do it. It's my first android device ever, and I've never rooted. I am no expert when it comes to computers, but I am good at following directions and doing research. I didn't know a lick about linux till I got this device and started doing some research. I found a handy rooting guide online which took step by step from initial unlocking to S-Off using DiryRacun and BabyRacun. I followed it and didn't have one issue doing it. I even used Windows 7 64bit to do it, not 32bit as recommended
I will say that it requires careful reading and each step has to be followed patiently, but its quite doable.

I think maybe you hit the nail on the head in regards to the linux aspect. It's just my opinion that the headaches that can arise from being S-On can be far worse than the small effort to s-off. Even if you need to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and learn how to open a terminal in linux (ctrl, alt, T).
Open terminal - ctrl+alt+t
Enable temporary superuser permissions - sudo "account password" ex sudo reboot (press enter, type password)
List structure (directory) - ls
Change directory - cd /"folder or directory structure" ex. From home to desktop "cd Desktop" (same directory) ex. "cd /home/videos/TV show" (outside current directory)
Move up a level - cd ..
Fastboot and adb commands are run with ./ ex ./fastboot reboot
Pretty much all distributions have a terminal commands list packed into the help files these days. Some differ but they all perform the same functions.
Funny. I'm s-off. never used ubuntu before in my life. I was able to make a live CD and go s-off with NO PROBLEM. I was able to open a terminal and cd to the right directory. Untar works EXACTLY like unzip. I really don't see a problem for people that insist on rolling the dice and using win 7 64. it took me exactly 1 minute to make a bootable CD. again NO UBUNTU or LINUX experience prior to this at all. Stop fearing the Linux people.
I'm s-on and the reason I'm not s-off is because of the stupid 2-16gb sd card req.
I'm using a SanDisk 64gb so no.

This is exactly what I'm getting at. No offense to those that are S-on, but it's just so easy to S-off and it seems by the numbers more problems arise that are difficult to fix while S-On..more work even. Just to update firmware gotta relock, take an OTA, unlock, reroot, etc..instead of just flashing an update zip. Or Rom flashing requiring extra steps to write the kernel if the developer doesn't implement the script to do it for you. Just seems like time and effort wasted when an hour of time can take care of it.

I didn't have all my ducks in a line it's been a while so don't remember the exact cause there were suggested methods within the LP thread 3-4 posts that broke it down step by step I probably just missed one of the steps. Once unbricked I went to those posts and and made sure everything was working before trying again and it took about 3 minutes and bingo done

You say first try, so I'm guessing you s-off'd your replacement without issue? Probably using the correct usb port this time? Lol.

Looking For Coding Friends

So let me tell you my story.
I'm a 26 year old male, I'm married (common law), and quite frankly I'm broke as hell. Like, if I spent another year in these conditions, I'd surely become homeless.
I'm coming to this forum for some hope that I can do something with my life before it's too late. So please don't make fun of me, I'm here to learn all I can. I'm sick and tired of being called lazy and stupid just because I can't get a job (I live in a 3 mile Alabama town near nothing but a few family run gas stations).
Before judging me, you should know that I'm actually really really intelligent. I started learning HTML and CSS when I was 14, even ran an unofficial Linkin Park fan club for about 3 years by myself. I'm extremely interested in learning Javascript or whatever is necessary for Android development. I love Android.
I'm a huge nerd when it comes to things like stats, gaming, Android, the Internet, and being social. I learn all I can about anything I can research.
But I realize now - I'm not gonna make it anywhere if I don't have some sort of help. I need help learning Android development. I got a lot of ideas, I'm very creative, and love meeting new people.
Is there anyone out there who would like to I guess "tutor" me and we can be friends?
Hoping I don't get shoved off here. I know a lot of things and I'd hate to see it go to waste.

It'd be great if I could get resources that could run on a 6 or 7 year old computer (running Windows 7 Ultimate in safe mode)

I've tried installing Ubuntu Linux Desktop and it just won't go past the loading screen on the install disc.

It takes a while to install specially first boot but go into your grub and make sure that boot of disc is 1st then any usb boot options then the normal hard drive. Then make sure that the install disc you have is a .img or .iso. .iso is the more likely to have then open dosc drive power down put disc in and power up youll have the option to do an install or hopfully live boot. If you can live boot do that then once loaded go to the cd and run the install. Another usfull tip is to partition your system and home folder to keep data when you install an update or new os. If your droid is root you can get an app called drive droid i believe and you can put the live boot os onto a fat 32 partition and it will boot on startup thru usb. Youtube will be your best friend in these processes

Well I'm a little newbish with different kinds of Linux. I just knew about Ubuntu from Googling Linux lol. I want a Linux distro that will have no problem running on a crap laptop. I have an Acer Aspire 5000. Geez I wish I had a few hundred dollars for a cheap but new laptop. Or maybe spend all that on a tablet with a physical keyboard and stand lol.

Is there like a bare bones Linux or basic Linux? I know how to live disc. It's just that this computer won't do the install. Possibly because of a bad disc read. I'd much prefer installing from my SanDisk Flash Drive. It's 32gb.

Then copy the liveboot img or iso onto the usb device but im not sure what else may be needed i get all my live discs from a coworker that builds his own distro versions. Im not sire on the barebones thing like i said i get mine pre built and the files are too big to dropbox but im sure you can easily find something to start with

I've heard of DSL Linux. It's supposed to be the smallest Linux distro. I might look into it.
Come to think of it why would I need much power to code stuff? I mean really..

You just need the proper tools, os and good enough hardware to run and test what you write. But that shouldnt be an issue but i dont know anything about other distros so i may not be able to help as much but the tools should be the same

Ill check that out tomarrow but im not too worried about size it only takes up about 9 gigs for me but im sure theres a way to trim down whatever distro you pick and probably a way to just partition your system to a usb stick and keep home partition on laptop but i havnt looked into that
Also just downloaded this today i read the first chapter at lunch it seems like itll be useful https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilebeez.javainaday

Just found out DSL is a dead project. Hasn't been a stable release in years. Also, I'm worried about my wifi capability cutting off when installing Linux... Because my Acer Aspire 5000 has a wifi toggle button, and apparently wifi is a common bug in Linux =/ anyways thanks for the conversation.
I have a toggle button as well and the wifi still works just fine with mint 13 the only rhing that was a bug for me is that the first distro i installed i did with the toggle off so when i booted up the switch was backwards. Blue for off red for on lol. But thats ben sprted since then but i havent had an issue with it
You could look into running a virtual machine instead. Look into VirtualBox and install a Linux distro.
But if space is an issie he may not wanna have an os wothin his windows plus setting up the allocated ram and partition for whatever he adds into the vb. But thats a good idea i should have thought of that too lol
