[Q] Memory leaking, 4412 devices.. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

As per Andrew Dodd (Samsung device maintainer for CM), our devices (4412 based devices) apparently leak memory when running a 4.2.1 AOSP based ROM. What effects, if any, will this have on our device?

So it'd be best to steer clear of AOSP until these issues are fixed?

It depends. I only saw him complaining about one app in particular and honestly, CM is not really AOSP. AOSP-based, but they have changed quite a bit of things. Who is to say the problem isn't there?
I know that probably singes the hair on the heads of CM devs, but they cannot automatically assume that CM is bug-free.

Yeah I see your point about it not being bug-free. This dev also seems to get mad at quite a lot of things pertaining to developing for the Exynos platform. This post just sparked some interest and I just wanted to know how safe it would be for an end-user like me to use CM as a daily driver. Thanks for the insightful info though. Oh and later in the comments he says that even pulling down the notification bar can cause memory leaking so I'm not sure that it's only Ingress that's causing a leak.
edit: Oh and sorry to hear about your old Note 2. I hope your CLN doesn't die like that!
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app

This only applies when running the unmerged Mali changes. Since its mem leaking, it hasn't been merged into CM gerrit so its not affecting any current nightlies. Kejars basic kernel does have the Mali changes though so you might get some mem leaking if you flash that.

What would the memory leaking do exactly? Just waste it and slow the phones processes down a bit? Or something worse?

Memory leaks are basically something stuck in memory that keeps requesting more memory when it isn't needed, but never releasing any memory that they don't need anymore. Over time, the phone would just get really sluggish. Restarting should fix it, but it would slowly get back to where it was before.

definitely. maybe it doesn't nuke SD cards!
It is GB so yes, perhaps.
Could be that it fixes the SD Card bug. EH09 sounds a lot newer then EC09.

Great news. If this new rom doesn't kill sd cards, then I might finally make the switch back to a Touchwiz-based rom. AOSP roms are still unstable in a lot of ways.

Yea, AOSP still has a few minor bugs but it's heads and tails above anything TW has to offer. With the introduction of fascinatemtd (thanks to jt1134) we can finally do away with TW.

When do you think ICS is going to be released; should I install an ICS-based ROM?

When do you think ICS is going to be released for the Note? I've been holding out on installing custom ROMs, but if it's still going to be a while, I might as well do it.
Also, which ROMs (ICS) are the best? Is the battery life better or worse? Are there a lot of bugs?
I never try any custom Rom yet but usually there is always bugs on custom roms. I just suggest u wait for the official ics.

I'm using the unofficial. Then stripped out every last bit of bloat before installing apps. Vastly better than stock and only one rom flash. Plus the -k holokernel. My guess is ICS official won't come out until late May or June at the earliest. Even after that there will be custom roms based on it so I'm not going to bother until a good custom rom based on the official ICS comes out.

Be nice. Everything in any kind of forum is subjective.
I could also say you dont know what you're talking about if that's my opinion.
Im a senior software engineer who simply does not have the time to even look at Roms.
Does that make me "nuts?"
ICS seraphim is awesome. Works very smooth and is polished. There are very few known issues with most of these roms, nothing that should be a deal breaker for anyone.
Apex launcher is infinately better than touchwiz.
Also, ics stock revamped is another great rom ported over by smartguy044.

Reading will tell you all of the features in less time than it takes somebody else to look them up for you, type a response, and for you to read their response. Trying out the roms yourself will show you everything and you can figure out your own likes and dislikes of every ROM.

6.2? you mean the froyo version? If so, I don't think so, if you mean 7.2 the GB version then yes it is, it's available from the same place as CM9, http://get.cm/?device=galaxys2 just scroll down the list till you find a CM7 nightly, they run them about once a week so it's a ways down. Flash that and you're on CM 7.2 with whatever changes have been added to the nightly since then. If you want the CM 7.2 RC without the nightly additions it's also there http://get.cm/?device=galaxys2&type=RC
No.

If you did I'm sure there would be small demand for it. GB and CM7 introduced a slew of new subtle features such as text editing and didn't go wrong in any areas where Froyo/CM6 excelled. Again, why would you want to go back, the SGS2 was designed with GB as its core and it's why it works well.

Small market shouldn't discourage you if you want to do it, that said there are no libraries or proprietary files for the SGS2 that are known to be compatible with froyo since it shipped with 2.3 GB, doesn't mean the GB versions wouldn't work or couldn't be made to work, but since they aren't open source it could be a monumental task to get things like the screen, mics, speakers, etc... working, given how difficult it is to get some of these things working properly on GB or ICS where the libraries and drivers are known to be compatible who knows if it's even possible, I'd be interested to see if you can manage it though.
Do you know who would be the best person to ask, to help me take a stock froyo rom, and do what is necessary to make CM6.2?? I understand Cyanogenmod is already taken, but make my own version of CM, kind of like a kang

It's definitely a kang in every sense of the word...it might not look different on the surface (as far as menus, etc), but he added his kernel under it and I have absolutely noticed a difference. Keep in mind that he released it literally within hours of Jamie's release, so that was surprising in and of itself.
I'm sure that this is the first of many releases with the new base, and we'll see more "kang-ness" in future builds, as well as his own version eventually (that includes the OTA and stuff like that).
Also I'm not sure what the rules are these days about posting links to his stuff...might want to check with the mods to make sure it's cool.

I do believe the devhost mirror he has is ok to post as it is an xda affiliated site. If you post a link to his site since you have to sign up it is considered against the rules. I may be wrong on this but that is how I have read the rules.
He built his rom from the CM source making it a kang, but there are some of his own personal touches in it. It is a nice solid build and I am sure there will be more to come.

[Q] i717 - I'd like JellyBean with long Battery Life and Stable

I'm using a i717 AT&T Galaxy Note
I've been enjoying all the resources on this site for a while and I've installed at least a dozen ROMs.
The first one I settled on was Saurom, then I used CM 10 for a while, and now I'm using ParanoidKANG, and I've tried quite a few in between.
I really like ParanoidKANG but I don't like it eating up all my RAM. Or that it replaces the Performance Options with "Performance Controls". Controls I already have in ROM Toolbox. Making my options to compress RAM and set stricter settings confusing and dangerous for a noob like myself.
Recently I figured out how to flash Kernels for OC (Yay!), so I'm using h0tcakez now.
Here's my question: Is there a stable Rom/Kernel that won't eat up my battery. Are there known solutions to saving battery life?
This issue seems to be a constant through all my flashing and I realize this is a subjective question, that's been asked before, but I thought I'd get a pool of answers before flashing (yet again) a new ROM.
Opinions and yelling matches welcome!
