[Q] HELP! I can't figure out how to get back to a stock ROM! - HTC EVO 3D

I should never have flashed my Evo 3D. I had no experience, but a buddy of mine talked me into it. It worked fine for a good while, but now...it just reboots itself randomly, and then freezes during the boot screen. I have to pull the battery to reset. I also can't use TONS of apps that I'd really like to have. Smart Glass, My Xbox 360, Bad Piggies, etc...
Anyway, I don't even know what H-Boot is, or what version I'm on. This is all the info I have...
Android Version: 2,3,4
HTC Sense Version: 3.0
Software Number: 2.08.651.2
MOD Version: InfectedROM_Synergy-3dvo_RLS-1 (NIGHTLY)
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.13-ck3+
All I want to do is go back to a stock Sprint ROM. I'd like to get the latest OTA if possible. I tried that as well, but it just searches forever. I let it go overnight once, and woke up 9 hrs later, and the thingy was still spinning.
Anyway... Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED! This thing is driving me crazy. I'll be getting a Note II soon, but I can't take this ROM anymore,
-B
EDIT: Almost forgot... It isn't that I haven't tried anything. I grabbed a Stock ROM off of PPCGeeks, and connected my 3vo to my laptop. I ran the .exe, but it said it failed. I also got a different ROM, put it on the ROOT of my SD Card, navigated to the .zip in Recovery, and initiated a flash. Every attempt ended with the phone rebooting with the same old Synergy ROM. Once booted, I got a bunch of pop-up messages saying that various programs weren't able to run, or something like that. However, these programs included Sense, Phone, etc...

Follow this guide through Step1 and you will be 100% stock on the current Sprint ICS ROM. If any of the apps you want to run require root then you can complete Step2 as well. Since Step3 is for gaining S-OFF I doubt that you would need to do that in your situation.

THANKS! I'll give it a shot, and report back. I REALLY appreciate the help, good sir.
UPDATE: Yup...this is exactly what I did last night. All that happens is that it tells me it failed, and then reboots back to how it was. I just read a troubleshooting section, and it says to check if the bootloader is unlocked, and that if it is (via HTCDev) that it will stop this method from working. I'm pretty sure this is what's messing this up for me. However, they give no explanation as to how someone can change this. I don't even know where to look to make sure it's locked...

The command you need to lock the bootloader is in Step1 of the guide:
fastboot oem lock
Maker sure you read the section(s) of the guide you are planning to use carefully and follow them as they are written.

Wow... Sorry. lol I don't know how I missed that. How do I run this oem tthing? The guide says I should know how to do this, but I unlocked this thing well over a year ago, and only did it once. I just tried reading a tut, but it doesn't even say how to do this, and it also says that if it isn't done correctly, it will brick my phone. He says there is never a reason to go back to 'stock'. Not sure what all that is about. Do I need to download another file for this?

There are a lot more details about issuing fastboot commands in mpgrimm2's thread. That's what I used when I started so I'm sure you can find what you need in there if you read through it carefully.

Meh... never mind. I can't understand any of that thread at all. I'll just have to put up with this until I get my new phone.

If you want, i can help you get your phone to stock Gingerbread or ics fully locked and unrooted via team viewer or something..... Pm me your gmail address if you want. I'm 99% sure It won't brick or anything but then again I take no responsibility . STRANGE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED .....
EDIT : I see you edited it yourself.

Well, the thing is... I understand everything but re-locking this boot loader. That's all I have to do for this to work, but I just don't understand that thread at all. It's just gibberish to me. I mean, is it a program I have to use? Do I type something in? IDK... That thread is pretty hard to understand if you have no knowledge of this stuff.

I found this: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/9322-how-to-relocked-hboot-htc-root-method/ ...but it doesn't do anything when I type in the cmd.

Mogul, you could find a stock rooted Rom that would be essentially the same thing as returning to stock without having to relock. I'm sure RamJet will have a link as I'm at a restaurant ignoring my girlfriend.

He wants ota updates.
He won't be able to take OTA updates from sprint if he don't relock.
@op
You need to download the rootevo3dnew.zip attached in the link you posted above. Then extract it somewhere. If you are using win xp open cmd and navigate to that folder in cmd. If you are using newer version of windows then hold shift and right click the folder which you just extracted and click "open command window here." and then connect phone in fastboot mode and type the "fastboot oem lock". Then reboot the bootloader, you will re locked instead of unlocked at the top. Now you can run the ruu.
Or hit me up on gtalk when you have 20-30 mins time, i will guide you.

1. Not sure whether you need to relock the bootloader or not.
2. Run the RUU
3. If you locked the bootloader, re-unlock it, flash Amon RA
4. Amon Ra has a menu option to re-root the phone.

Definately need to relock to run the RUU, and I think you need to be on stock recovery for it to work as well. There is a thread that explains how to get back to rooted stock search the development thread or this one. It was popular when the OTA came up . Sorry I have no idea how to post links or I would.
ok thanks. If someone could post a link, it would be very helpful.....thanks guys
First of all, you really should use the search function. This has been gone over in many, many threads already. From what people have posted in response to you you really could have searched RUU and found an answer I'm sure. You could also search "ICS Stock" and come up with a thread. I say all this because people keep posting new threads without doing research and it is cluttering up the board and is getting frustrating. Also, you learn a lot more about this stuff if you read up about it.
That being said... follow the link and info in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22660531&postcount=12
You also need to have HTC Sync installed on your computer and put the phone in fastboot. You don't need to flash stock recovery first. Also, when you relock your phone will say SECURITY WARNING in pink where it says RELOCKED. You can ignore that. Make sure you back up anything and everything you want to save as this will really wipe your phone for reals.
If you get any mainver errors search for the Awesome Recovery Tool in the dev section which should help you automate any mainver work arounds you may need.

Sorry. Geesh I did search but I guess I wasn't using the correct words to get the help I was looking for. That's why I posted the thread. I was going to sell the phone that's why I was putting it back stock the root is fine. But that looks pretty complicated so maybe I can sell it the way it is.

Well, as I mentioned above, it's getting frustrating with all the threads asking the same thing.
Anyway, it's actually really easy. I did it over the weekend because I wanted to start with a clean slate. Just download the RUU, make sure you have HTC Sync installed but not running, put phone in fastboot, relock phone, double click on RUU. It will do it's thing and then you're done. It takes about 15 minutes or so for the RUU to run.
Otoh, someone might like the fact that there's ICS on it so you may get some nice bids on it if you put it up on eBay.

Except that's the outdated RUU. Use the one in my linked post above.
If I am running cleanrom GBE, will these steps take me back to stock as well?
What I am supposed to do:
Download latest RUU
Flash stock recovery (put on root of sd card, and flash in recovery)
relock in fastboot (is that thru adb?) (fastboot oem lock)
run RUU (this is where I am confused, how do I run it? Like flash it?
then I should be bone stock?
If I wanted to root, I would flash amon ra
Install SU to root.
Miss anything?
Sorry, its a little different than modding samsung devices.
Thanks for you help and pateince
Heather
Yes, but you actually don't need to flash stock recovery first. To run the RUU just double click on the RUU file. It will open up a window and there is a ReadMe (or something similar) button. Click that and read it for more info on what to expect when running it.
Before you run it make sure you have HTC Sync on your pc. It shouldn't be running, just needs to be there.
Also, follow the linked post in my post above for latest version that has a working download link if you don't already have it.
And make sure you have backed up anything and everything you need because this really will wipe your internal sd card. I would back up your external sd card too for good measure. Can't be too safe.
I'm a noob in terms of the HTC rooting process.. Very familiar with the Moto Droid series, so different terms, I guess. Can you explain why the HTC Sync has to be installed, but not running? I've already unlocked my Rezound, after the OTA, and am running CleanROM 3.1. I actually had HTC Sync installed at first, but instead of disabling it, I uninstalled it. It worked like a charm with HTC Sync uninstalled. Maybe I'm an idiot and it's a whole different issue. Like I said, I'm a noob. Just wanted to see why it worked that way from someone who seemed like they would know.
It's to get the HTC drivers for the phone onto you computer.

Similar thing happened to me. I have hboot 1.15. I relocked the the phone ran the RUU. Phone booted up normal with the everything stock. I then took the OTA and when it rebooted it was updating then it rebooted and the phone never turned on again. I sent it to HTC for warranty. They will get it tuesday. I'll see how this goes.
Okay guys... Enough with the flaming. If you can help, post! If not, don't. Grow up. It was posted in the wrong section. Use the report button in the upper-right corner of the post and report it.
Now, let me see if I can actually help you.
You're getting this error because you're trying to flash an older RUU on the phone than what's already on there. You'll need to flash the same RUU version or higher. If you took the latest OTA update, there may not be one available yet. I'd suggest you go through the HTCDev unlock again until that RUU makes it to the internet.
Team Nocturnal posted a couple of the older RUU versions.

Hi there jrgalioto. Can you do me a favor, and boot into your bootloader for me? I'd like you to check the green text.
What Radio version does it say you have?
Also, if you can connect the phone up to your computer and run the fastboot command (in FASTBOOT USB mode):
Code:
fastboot getvar mainver
What number comes back? (If you can't run the command, don't worry about it)
---
If I might ask, why did you relock the phone?

I'm looking into trying to get you a link to a current RUU. One has been posted, but I can't access it because of Filefactory's restrictions. Hopefully somebody will post a mirror to the download soon.

I relocked because I needed to bring it back to Sprint for service, so I needed to unroot it, because I wasn't receiving data to it. But I got it figured out now. I was able to unlock the bootloader again and my recovery was still there. So i reflashed a custom ROM, so I at least had something on my phone. When I called Sprint, I told them it was not a phone issue, they updated my username in the system, then I was able to ##72786# to get the hands free activation to complete without error 1012. So I am now back in business. However, If I ever do have to unroot again, I will be in the same boat.

[Q] Rezound Does Not Boot - Can Only Access Bootloader

[SOLVED - See Post #9]
Hey everyone,
So, I have some experience with rooting/ROMs, bootloaders and recoveries, all specifically on my HTC Droid Incredible (Yep, the original). But that's long in the tooth these days, and getting rather difficult to stand the slower speeds and all.
I decided to pick up a used phone, in this case an HTC Rezound, to repair and serve as my default. Cracked digitizer, but that's an easy fix, and it works for the moment which is all that matters. Turns out there was one more problem with it - it doesn't boot Android. It gets stuck in a bootloop if you allow it to boot, but it does go to hboot if you boot it up and hold the VOL down key, as expected. I cannot boot into recovery.
I tried flashing the 4.03.605.2 RUU from AndroidPolice - same problem. So, I'm not sure where the issue lies. I'd like to start by just getting the phone back to stock, and booting into Android if anyone can help me. I should be able to do everything properly from there.
I'm not entirely certain if HBOOT is stock - it shows the Android on the skateboard at the bottom - I'm not sure if that's a custom HBOOT or not, and I can't seem to find any specific reference to it. It is LOCKED with S-ON, so, I've been assuming that it hasn't been tampered with too deeply, someone just hosed an upgrade and I'm not sure how to go about getting it fixed.
Any help is deeply appreciated.
- Katie

Flash a recovery in a zip right after you finish the ruu using the same method (no need for reboot).
To get root again you might want this: downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip

Ok, no such luck. I did the RUU flash and then tried rebooting, no go, tried reflashing from my SD after that, nothing. I'm not sure what to do now. :/
Update
Small update - I did the HTC bootloader unlock and successfully got Amon Ra flashed onto it. Now working on getting Android to boot. *sigh* This thing is a serious pain in the...
If I get it to work, I'll be sacrificing a ram, or at least some RAM. :fingers-crossed:
Still, I'm open to any suggestions or help anyone can offer. Thank you!
I would make a nandroid now and keep it as is for a bit just to make sure it functions okay.
Then if all is good flash a ROM!
I'm running ViperRez and it's very good. Doesn't seem to stream bluetooth media but all else is good. Very nice daily driver. There might be an update coming which will hopefully fix the bt steaming.

Heh, that would be doing things the SMART way. I'm going to do the unofficial CM9 which has BT streaming media, but not phone - sadly, something I'm much more interested in. I am wondering if I can't get the stock ICS or JB on there and just stick with that, since I do like using my BT headset. But since I've had no luck so far getting that to go on there, I think I'll take my chances with CM9 first, and go from there.
If I get that, I'll back it up thoroughly and then try my hand at putting the stock 4.03 on instead.
Solved!
Ok, so, I got CM9 booted!
The short of what I did was the following steps:
1) HTC Dev Bootloader Unlock
2) Installed Amon Ra
3) Installed CM9 using the S-ON instructions found at the site below - I can't link yet, so forgive me.
Code:

4) Letting the bootloader flash the Kernel failed, so I had to do it manually by following the instructions for S-ON below in case of a parsing failure:

Oh! I misread your last post above mine and thought you had gotten it back to stock.
Your issue was exactly what you figured out, that when you are s-on you need to flash the kernel separately after flashing a ROM or else you'll get stuck. If you s-off that will be automated but s-off makes it easier to brick your phone. I don't flash often so I'm staying s-on.
Sorry I misread your post, I could've let you know about that.

[Q] Unrooted, unlocked S-on but can't get custom ROM

So, I have gone through the whole process of rooting my phone, unlocking it. I have TWRP on it, Titanium backup (thankfully), Goo Manager. It is S-on. I have 2.09 Hboot. My TWRP-jewel is 2.5.0.0. Ok, now onto my question, I am trying to get CM-10 to load but it doesn't go any further than the load screen. No matter what I try. I have even tried switching to JellyBAM but all to no avail. Can someone offer me tips as to what I may have done or be doing wrong? Thanks in advance
[Q] trying to put CM10 on my rooted phone
Forgive me if I put this in the wrong group, but I feel this is probably the right one for it. I have Hboot 2.09. I have TWRP. I have S-on. I want to put CM10 with Gapps onto my phone but every way I have tried, CM10 just sits there and loops around, the longest being an hour. I figured some time was possible, but come on. Over on Google+, people are telling me to flash this and flash that, fastboot this or that. I have no idea what they are trying to say to me. I am loving learning all of this but I need a little more explanation than just flash something. I realize that flash has something to do with commands. I am running windows 8 if that helps on my laptop. My TWRP version is 2.5.0.0. I don't know if my phone has gone through the latest update or not. Thanks for any help you can give me!
You have to install the kernel separately from the ROM since you're S-on. Click the link in my sig for more info.
You most likely have the newest touch panel driver, so you can only use ROM's based off the latest OTA, software version 3.16. Your touchscreen won't work otherwise. You can gain S-off and downgrade your touch panel driver, at which point you can run AOSP ROM's like CM.

First of all you might be on the newest touch panel driver, and that's the first thing that gets you in trouble because aosp roms don't work with that, as of now, it might work later... Who knows... Secondly you need to flash the boot.img separately thru fastboot because your are s-on and on 2.09... To make your life easier try to get s-off either thru facepalm or dirty racun... That way you can flash any rom and also downgrade your touch panel driver to get aosp working on your phone... If you flash viper rom it has a senseless option so you can use nova and get stability and some sort of aosp look... Good luck!

Yes, S-off is the way to go if you want to run CM. Otherwise, try meanbean or viper or sharkie or any other sense based Rom. They should work fine.

I have tried to do facepalm. When I put the code in (I'm assuming it goes in the command window), I get messages like "adb not valid command". Even though my phone is most definitely rooted, says unlocked. Should I redownload android-sdk? Thanks again!

ADB commands must be issued when the phone is mounted as media share not as fastboot. Connect your phone as if you were transferring files between it and your pc.
Something new to try since you're on the latest OTA.

I do have it connected to the computer like that. Do you mean I have to go into TWRP and mount it that way? I tried it that way too. I downloaded and whole new android SDK to see if that is the problem. If not, I am going to factory reset my phone and start over. I can't imagine why I was able to root the phone, get it unlocked, but now I can't do anything else with it. Not even get adb commands to recognize it.

This is for tabidee hey I was reading ur stuff on xda developers and I have a question. If u can help if not its cool. Ok so i got my sprint evo and I went to try to root it. I went thru a process that with the steps combined with htcdev site got me to say unlock my bootloader. I used hoot 2.09 and I was supposed to flash this pimg175 zip to i guess install a recovery. Well that won't work at all... I cant get my s on switched to s off and so i am stuck with according to the hoot screen a tampered, unlocked with s on, unrooted phone. I am so confused with all the steps and files I had to download, rename and save to various folders that I gave up. With my phone at its current state what do I do next? I deleted all the files from the day I unlocked it but if you can explain to me... And explain like if I was a five year old cuz I'm that dumbfounded on this subject... But if u can maybe walk me thru the rest of the process or walk me thru a undoing of what I done so far. I'm lisa. My email is [email protected]
Check out the link below. It's a GUI for rooting and has everything you need to get your phone rooted. You'll need to install the recovery first then superuser, which will give you root.

You're rooted. Run RUU tool to unroot and go back to complete stock. TWRP is the recovery menu and the gateway to flashing new roms and kernels etc.

Okay so i downloaded and unzipped, The instructions on the thread are very vague
So I think i need to use a backdoor or something cause I can't get my phone to boot into android
Quote:
Q: But what if I can't get into Android?? Surely there is something I can do!?
A: Yes, I designed a "backdoor" to allow you into VipeRUU. However, BE CAREFUL! This skips important checks that VipeRUU does when it start (most importantly, if your phone really is an EVO 4G LTE!) but it will allow you to do this procedure from the bootloader. All you have to do is create a text file in the "files" folder called "bypass.txt" and then start the program. You'll be alerted with a few warnings when doing this.
Also do I need to have the phone plugged into the computer or something. I am so sorry but I am very lost

I've never done this process myself, but I'll do my best to help you.
First: reboot into your bootloader, Hold down power key with volume down key until it reboots into the screen where you listed all that information. It should have a white bacground.
Second: Naviagte to fastboot and hit the pwoerkey
Third: Connect computer to phone with usb
Fourth: create a blank bypass.txt file and place into the file named "file" from the zip you downloaded.
Fifth: Run ViperRUU and select whichever option you need.

Are you running windows? Open up a command prompt and try to get su access through fastboot. You may not have high enough privleges. Also, do you have HTC drivers installed? Once you're inside the fastboot menu, don't touch anything. The reading on the top should say "Fastboot USB"

Here is the link to the latest RUU I wouldn't mess with VipeRUU if you are not sure what you are doing.

Do what BD619 says. I had hoped ViperRUU would work, but the stock HTC one is much easier to use and operate. Also I usually use Ubuntu in these situations due to how much easier it is to work things in Terminal than it is to use Window's command prompt. Just a thought in case you ever need to do something fastboot related in the future.

VipeRUU will work fine but he's still new this kind of stuff it can be confusing. It took me a couple tries to get it to work the first time I used it.

No matter what it's a bad sign if you need to RUU. Definitely something I never want to do. Means something major screwed up lol. Yeah I was gonna give him the regular HTC one until I read all the paranoid stuff the ViperRUU posted in his thread.
