[Q] Unusual problem since XXELLA (JB) update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all this is my first post, nice to meet you all.
Last week I connected phone to Kies and it asked to update to XXELLA (JB) so thought Ok I'll update it. At first was very impressed with some new features etc but my phone has since developed a few rather annoying problems.
1) Battery seems to go much quicker with no extra usage from me. Using the phone the exact same way.
2) Mobile data intermittently stops working after you come off the internet or an app no longer requires a connection. It will be turned on in the setttings but no 3G symbol on top of screen
3) The most annoying issue with this phone now since update is when the above happens (3G turned on but no connection) my phone will not send/receive text messages and will not call out.
I have to power cycle the phone to correct it (restart)
Just to let you know my phone is now rooted but this wasn't done til a few days ago and problem was happening before this.
P.S. I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem with texts etc, but a few weeks ago now I tried calling a mate on O2 only to be joined into someone elses conversation. We both could here the other person but they couldn't here us and I couldn't hear my friend either. Ended the call then rang my friend again and was fine. Just a bit scary that you could be in someone elses conversation unknowingly these days, and you wouldn't have a clue.
Any solution to my problems, other than to revert back to ICS instead of JB are welcome.

As this is a Samsung update contact Samsung service centre .
Or try a factory reset or join XDA and flash stockJB firmware are your choices .
Root voids Samsung warranty
jje

My phone has improved slightly instead of locking up reception as I'll call it when data turned on, it now works for a short while then stops working where as before it was as soon as it was activated.
I'll keep an eye on it and if it doesn't improve i'll unroot and contact samsung or get a custom rom put on and see if that improves things somewhat.
thanks

[Q] Receiving Same SMS multiple times + Sometimes No Calls

Hello,
i recently changed from HD2 to SGS2 and im really new about how things work on this side..
My Problems are:
I receive the same SMS multiple times.. It usually stops when i get another SMS but then it continues with that new one..
When screen is off (standby) i dont receive any calls.. It keeps ringing on the other side but i dont see anything on the phone.. Just when i have the phone beside any radio or speakers, i hear that something is coming (you know that mecanic sound that comes from PC speakers etc.), but there is nothing on the phone.. Also same for the SMS'es, i get the SMS'es after i turn the screen on..
When in standby, it shuts off the Wifi, even if i set up the Sleep Policy to never..
So i suppose, the phone shuts almost any radio, when in standby (maybe something like flight mode).. And i dont know what are those related to ? Should i just change the kernel (if so, which one ?) or completely change the ROM and everything..?
My Phone has currently Android 2.3.3 (i think it is an official standard rom)
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE7
Mobile Company: SIMYO - Germany
Hope there is a solution..
Thanks
just wanted to up the post.. give me at least some ideas, even if you dont know any solution..
thanks..
same problem here...
Push...
Problem is still there.
Upgraded to a bunch of different ROMs and Kernels but nothing has changed so far.
Have the same problem but also some more info
My problem started a week ago, same symptoms. I also noticed that one of my apps was stalling, Total call recorder. Just uninstalled it and the problem have been solved for an hour right now. Ill keep you updated when more time has past.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 , Android ver. 2.3.5 Original
i had the problem always, even after hardreset, so i think it wasnt a software problem..
i gave the phone for repair on 14. sept. and im still waiting.. it came aready 2 times as "repaired" but the problem was still there..
i dont know if im unlucky or if samsung sucks..! either way im waiting for more than 3 months and dont know what else i can do..

[Q] sound dropping in and out during calls

So this has been happening randomly on calls for about two weeks now. I'm still on Stock everything and would like to know if this is a known problem, if something is wrong with my phone, or if there is a fix? I'm past the point of returning and getting a new one and plus, I have grown atattched to this phone LOL.
I've tried hitting speaker and then turning it off but that doesn't work. Tried ticking mute and then unticking it, not working either. Reboot doesn't work. Resetting back to stock doesn't change it either.
Thanks to all.
AJ
Sounds like a typical ATT phone call. Would you and the person on the other end both happen to be on speaker phone? I cannot have a call via speaker to my wife if she is on speaker (which see insists on using) - there is too much voxing going on, I only hear every couple of syllables.

Not a speaker phone call. Seems like it happens mostly when I make calls from speed dial from my homepage screen. I can't conf
irm that last bit though lol.
Another question is this....I just turned my phone completely off and it had 42 % battery. When I turned it back on it now has 22% left.....what in the world is going on lol???
Would I be better off reverting back to 2.3.4? Or just getti
ng another sgs2?

I need more details to say this for sure, but I THINK you may be having the same issue I had. Not many people seem to have this issue (only seen a handful across a variety of forums). So if you happen to be a fellow sufferer, then welcome to the club!
My problem was:
After the 2.3.6 update (UCKK6), the person on the other line had trouble hearing me because my voice cut in and out frequently, yet randomly. On my end though, they came in nice and clear. I often had to deal with people hanging up on me because they thought my call dropped or that I hung up, or had to deal with a lot of people repeating "hello? hello!? You there!?" as I helplessly tried responding and not being heard.
My Solution(s):
1) keep the 2.3.6 update, but flash just the 2.3.4 (UCKH7) modem. Everything on your phone will work fine, but you will get the following FALSE warnings (FALSE as in the phone says it can't do something, yet everything works fine anyways. These are only based on first-hand experience and may not happen to you.)
a) upon boot (not wake/unlock) there will be an error notification about you not being able to access your external memory card due to security reasons... don't worry, its bull.
b) when using your phone as a mass media storage device, you will get a notification about the mass storage function not being able to work... this message is also bull.
2) Or you can just completely return to 2.3.4 (UCKH7) and either ignore the update prompts or freeze the process until a newer update that hopefully fixes our problem (or ICS) is released.
I did (1) for about 2 weeks then did (2) after reading all the battery complaints blamed on UCKK6. It reverted just to play it safe with battery life (plus they say that "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" and for me, UCKH7 wasn't broken and the update definitely broke it).
Wow, that sounds identical to me except its they can hear me but I can't hear them LOL. I reverted last night with odin one click downloader and the stock kernel for battery life so we will see what's going to happen today. Is this a phone problem physically or is it software?
Thanks
AJ
For me, its a software issue (modem to be specific) because it only happens on UCKK6 (and the leaked UCKJ1, UCKJ2, and UCKJ4) and when on UCKH7, my calls are as clear as a LAN line.
I say that if the problem still exists now, then its hardware. In that case, try contacting Samsung for a replacement if your ATT warranty is up. You could try ATT too because its a defective phone and they may still do something.

Unable to receive phone calls sometimes

Hi,
Sometimes I am unable to answer phone calls as the swipe fails to respond. End up missing a bunch of phone calls. Looked up on the internet for some solutions. Some of it indicated towards the possibility of an app creating the problem or posssible hardware failure. However, the reponses were vague.
Some help is appreciated. Perhaps a good app to better receive phone calls. Thanks.
Ps. I am using gingerbread operating system and the phone is not rooted.

Arjun

It helps if you are more specific as to what ROM you are using(ie..Stock 406, 407, DSC v7,Longhorn, PowerRom, etc) also what Phone app. The more details the better the chances you have of getting the issue resolved.

Dear tenorntex,
Thank you for the prompt response and apologies for the delay in my reply.
Background of the device:
I purchased the streak about 2 months ago and it was shipped with ROM 357, Build 16864 being a Froyo 2.2.2. This device was purchased in India and used in India. However, I experienced the following problems with the device:
1. Frequent errors (viz. foreclose or wait)
2. Bad battery life (if the device were charged by 9 am in the morning, it would drain by approx. 6 pm in the evening.
Fortunately, the official 407 Olleh ROM was released of which i read good reviews. Hence, I immediately I upgraded my device to Gingerbread 2.3.3 without rooting the device.
I was happy with ROM 407 as it reduced the said frequent errors upto a great extent and drastically improved the battery life. (the device now stays alive throughout the day)
However, there are some different problems which have cropped up with the device on ROM 407. They are the following:
1. Sometimes I am unable to answer phone calls as the swipe fails to respond.
(The app I was referring to could perhaps help shorten the length of the swipe. A long swipe generally makes it slightly difficult to answer phone calls)
2. Sometimes, while on a phone call the phone screen freezes and fails to respond. Hence, I am unable to either END the call, or put it on speaker, or perform a conference call. This sometimes gets cured in the event I press the Power Button to turn the screen off/on.
3. The device fails to notify me of a 'call wait' when I am already on a call. Hence, I end up missing those calls (some being important and urgent) and my only option is to return those calls once I have disconnected the earlier phone call.
4. Automatic conversion of SMS into MMS. However, this was cured by installing Handcent on my device.
5. Bad phone call reception: Sometimes, the party on the other end of the phone call complains of my voice cracking up. This however happens only when I am indoors. Perhaps it is a network specific (Vodafone) problem, as I have used the sim card of another network (Airtel) and I did not seem to face this problem with the latter network. (Again, not sure/fully convinced). May be it is a software or a hardware problem. (Honestly, I am quite lost with this issue and am considering getting it checked with the Dell service centre). I came across something called 'Mod for Dell Streak 5 Increases Signal Strength'. http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/dell-streak/
If you are aware, how effective is this mod and would it work in India?
Kindly help with the above issues. Additionally, would upgrading to any other ROM solve most/all of the above mentioned problems?
In the event I decide to upgrade to CM7 (popular choice as per my understanding) I understand that upgrading to CM7 would root my phone in the process of the installation. Hence would rooting the device void the warranty of the device. In any event, how important/useful is the warranty? (From what I understand, folks at Dell are not very helpful and their service is poor).
I mention warranty especially in light of the phone call poor reception problem mentioned above.
Also, some apprehensions about CM7:
earlier today I was reading some posts regarding CM7 and the issues regarding battery life. It is important for me that the phone stays alive throughout the day as I would not be having access to the charger during the day. However, I understand that the battery life reduces mainly due to the wifii connection being activated. Please note that I activate either data access and/or wifii ONLY when required to use the internet on the device (which is for a relatively shorter duration in the day).
Because of such usage, in your opinion do you believe that I should not have a battery problem with CM7?
In the event the above mentioned problems get solved without upgrading to CM7, would you still recommend upgrading to CM7 or any other ROM or perform any other modifications? Would there be a general/over all improvement in the device?
Additionally, by some misfortune, if I am unable to successfully upgrade or after upgrading, I am not very happy with the new ROM/modifications, is it possible to roll back/reinstall ROM 407 Olleh without any issues?
Your help and assistance is much appreciated. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Arjun Sheth
I have same incoming calls problem. Solution is I press power button, goes standby and press power again, then swipe to answer call
Thanks. Will keep try that the next time it happens.

When you installed the Stock 407 ROM, Did you ever do a Dell Factory Reset? or battery calibration? Your best bet for longer battery life is to use either DSC or LH 2.2v4, those have the best battery life so far of the GB Roms. I would NOT recommend going to CM7 or MIUI just yet.
As far as tweaks for better battery life, instead of using 3G for cell connection, drop it down to 2G. Internet speeds are slower, but uses less battery.
Also make sure your display is down as far as it can, but still make it usable for you.
turn off automatic push for email clients and similar apps, to every 15 or every hour.

Hi this is danish,
please tell me if you found any solution for your problem?
What about trying a miui rom like 2.3.23?
I realise to flash such a rom itself will have its own set of issues, but might be worth a shot, it's the best working rom solution I have found so far.

as far as i knw abt d screen unresponsive is due to d static force generat'd btw d body nd d screen try keepin d screen opp. side of d body...
I have this problem and sometimes still have this issue.
I have found over time that when the phone is in my pocket, if i take it out to use it the touchscreen is unresponsive for about 15 seconds which when your trying to answer a call can be very frustrating.
When the phone is not in my pocket the touchscreen works fine, all the time.
The only thing i can recommend is to put it to auto answer but this is not always best as you could miss the call and not realise its answered automatically.
If your busy "" then it could be very embarrasing.
dont keep ur streaks screen facing ur body when in pocket, as it generates static field and makes screen unresponsive for 5-10 mins. try keepin d backside of ur streak facing ur body.
Try with this

Galaxy S II keeps crashing

Hi all,
My Galaxy S II keeps crashing. The phone will just power off and the battery will drain right out and the only way to turn it back on is take the battery out then charge it again. Sometimes if I am quick and realised it has crashed I can take the battery out and turn it back on and the battery will have drained 30% in an hour.
Does anybody know why the phone might do this or is there a way I can track whether something in particular is crashing the phone via a log or something like that?
Thanks
Yes there are apps that can do that.
So whats the score.......are you on latest o2 or latest unbranded.
Post the about phone details lol.
Hi,
It is on the latest H3G UK firmware and is unlocked via the Galaxy S Unlock app by Helroz (so via nv_data.bin)
4.0.4

Build: IMM76D.XWLPY
Any ideas and what is the app called?
Thanks
Hello,
Just thought I would take this opportunity to join this thread since I have been suffering from a very similar (if not identical) problem on my S2 too. It's quite lengthy, apologise for that - hope to give as clear a picture as possible:
- S2 originally from vodafone contract, am now with giffgaff
- 1 year and 6 months old
- not rooted, have always used Samsung official firmware
- updated to ICS 4.0.4 about a month ago(?)
- Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084, build number: IMM76D.BULPG
I must say I can't be certain if the random crashes started (it would sometimes heat up really hot, or sometimes not warmed up at all), phone will just turn off. Can't turn back on without taking battery out and re-inserting.
Similarly, the battery level will drop by 30+% once the battery is re-inserted.
Have experienced once where it started up in "safe mode" and although everything was still there, the apps I have put in folders were all listed cos the folders were gone. Restarted and it wasn't in safe mode anymore, but had to create new folders and sort my apps again.
The random turn offs can happen every few days, or twice a day. Don't know why it happens.
I haven't installed many new apps (some are by japanese developers but worked fine before and after I updated firmware), asked at a Vodafone store and they suggested it could be a battery problem. (offered to send it off for repair, but will take 7-10days and factory reset, which I want to avoid...)
So bought and changed a new battery (from Samsung website) which looked good (no random shut downs for a week) but it all started again last night. So it's not the battery.
Suspected it's most probably software problems.
After upgrading to 4.0.4 firmware, the phone cannot display phone serial number/network etc etc under the "legal information" in settings.
The battery log seems funny too, I would re-insert battery and restart, the battery log will still show it's been on battery for 20+hours.
I've also spotted that there're 2 OS running when looking at the battery log - when I upgraded from gingerbread to ICS, I did not do a factory reset (is that absolutely necessary?) but phone has been working perfectly for a few months after the upgrade so I thought nothing of it....
I wanted to post a screenshot but not allowed cos I'm new to forum... =(
Is it because there're 2 OS so it's clashing...?
Since I haven't rooted, I'm not sure what I can do - last resort is to wait until JellyBean rolls out from Samsung and factory reset when I upgrade?!
Hope I've given enough info to get help easier.
PS: Kies is testing my temper. Tried to solve the "this device is not supported by KIES" problem by reinstalling whilst not connected to internet, kind of worked, allowed me to backup small files (such as call logs) but when it comes to big bits e.g. photos, it will show the "unexpected error" message again.....
also got "wssyncmlnps has stopped" on my phone...
ARGH!!! just wana backup my stuff before it completely turns into a brick!

[Q] The lag, it hurts

So I've had a S3 for about 6 months by now, and at first, it was running pretty smoothly. Few weeks ago (might even be a month by now) the JB update came out for my phone, so I installed that. Over the past two or so weeks, my phone has been laggy as hell, including random resets. I get a few restarts which the phone does itself, without any input from me. I'm also getting a serious lag whenever I'm attempting to type a message. I'll be able to type my whole message out, but it hasn't shown up on the screen (so the phone's manage to register the touch prompts I make, it just shows them on a 5-10 second delay). This occurs even when the only app I'm running is the messaging one. Further lag issues include receiving messages. My phone will vibrate, then some 5 seconds or so later the message will finally be received by the phone and my ringtone goes off.
I've tried doing a hard reset on the phone, and that hasn't changed anything. Could it be hardware related?
And I'm currently running the stock Aus unbranded ROM, unrooted, no mods (XSADLK3 I think)
I had this issue on my sgs2 when upgraded to ics, only fix at the time was to take back to my carrier for a re flash (they told me if I flashed it myself I'd void the warranty). Dunno if that helps at all.
It could be. Try updating to the latest JB firmware first though.

Well, I called up Samsung support earlier, and the guy kept suggesting I just restore the phone. Which I had already done at that point. And the carrier I'm on doesn't have a store where I live, I'd have to mail it back to them, have their guys take a look at it and either can my contract or send me a new one
